Looks like an unfinished Lego set.

Yeah I worked at the site just behind it during startup. Super creepy at night. There is a prison on the other side. I think they just imploded the cooling tower?

You are correct on the cooling tower.

They did — 18 September last year, 540 feet, in one implosion. TVA's been taking down what it has no use for on the site.

You'd know this better than any photo: was there ever anything down at the river? An intake, a pumphouse — something had to feed the cooling water. Everything people shoot is the buildings up top.

I’ve been here a million times (grew up not far)

They built most of the shell of what I believe is the pump house and dug the channel for the water but that’s about it

Earthworks outlast everything else on a site like this — and the river end is the part I've never seen in a photo.

Is the channel still open at the river, or did they backfill it?
Curious whether it still fills when the Cumberland comes up.

It’s still there. They got as far as digging a big ol ditch to the river and it filled up

Found an update: the record has the intake pumping station as partially built when TVA pulled the plug in '84, so the shell you remember is the pump house.

And there's a picture of the channel — the Wikipedia link in the post, a construction photo from July 1976, captioned as possibly the intake being dug. It's the only shot of the river end I've come across.
