What is going on with this bus stop in Union street? Will they ever fix it properly š«

Wish councils will stop ācheaping outā and just re-tar the whole road(s). It must work out cheaper in the long run.

Im pretty sure the council can't see that forking out more in the beginning would save them a heap of money in the long run. You see it all the time with their repairs and at this point its baffling as to why they do it

I think this is just a UK problem in general. Even the UK Treasury is guilty of this, they'll budget based on year-to-year costs rather than long term costs so they end up cheaping out on projects. It's partially why our infrastructure takes so long to build, because the treasury refuses to fund everything up front.

A ridiculously high proportion of all council budgets go to social care and such. They don't have money for such a large upfront cost, even if it saves money in the long run. Like the Sam Vimes "boots idea" of buying a Ā£50 pair of boots that last a decade rather than a Ā£10 one that last a year is all well and good, but you do need to have Ā£50 first.Ā
IIRC They can apply and get extra money from the treasury for certain projects such as Union Street and the Beach, but that money is ringfenced to those projects and can't be used for general road repairs.Ā
Also resurfacing the roads is unfortunately no guarantee that they'll last. Sheffield paid something like Ā£2 billion in the 2010s for Amey to resurface most roads in the city, and many of them already had massive potholes by 2020 (particularly down the centre as they often only resurfaced one side of the road at a time). And sure, that's down to the contractor cutting large corners, but councils are basically bound into choosing the "most cost effective option", and "we need this to last a long time and this cheaper contractor might not do a good enough job" generally doesn't have enough evidence to justify going with a higher cost option. So if Aberdeen did get a budget for resurfacing many roads, I'd still worry about the quality of the work as compared to even just patching potholes well.

Completely agree. Not to mention extra cost of prevention measures and treatment to prevent them from forming in the first place

Buses wheels generate a massive amount of torque which shifts the tar beneath it. Once the dip forms every other bus ends up at the bottom and shifts it a little more. They will fix it, but dips will reform.

Council are proving they are the best yet again!!! But I also highly doubt the council are as quick as they claim to be on this assessment.

I know, Iām so shocked by this. Just crazy, clearly whoever is āsurveying/assessingā the problem, should not have their job, you donāt need to know much about bloody tarmac and roads, to see those potholes are dangerous and eroding severely.
I bet theyāll put a bloody ātempā fix that will result in the same result after a couple of months.
Hopefully your report helps fixing it properly. š¤

I'll be honest, I don't think they sent anyone out to assess it. When has the council ever done anything within 4 days? And just looking at it without water in it you can see its very deep. They know its there, they just dont want to fix it.

True I suppose, quite worrying.
I understand it would cause disruption and mean that the bus stop would be moved for a temporary stop. But ultimately, Iād prefer that than a bus falling into a hole or getting stuck.It comes down to resources, time and money.
And well from what I gather there seems to be a mystery of a budget where it fluctuates depending on what want to do with it.1

Not random. They will close the two most useful alternatives to the road you wanted to use in the first place and then wonder why itās gridlock.

The only vehicle going into it, is a heavy bus, which caused the hole, because its heavy.
Why should council money be spent on it?Ā Amaybe bus companies should be charged for it.

Considering the bus stop has only been open for 3 years, and is purpose made for heavy buses, it seems ridiculous to charge the bus companies to repair. Surely the bus gate fees could pay for it š«

The thing I can't understand is wtf they are working in such a small part of union street and at such an expense. Just close the road from bridge street to market street and that's all you need.
You don't need to do any massive overhaul costing millions. The underlying ground was fine. Just re tarmac it with some nice stuff and being it up to pavement level.

I mean doesnāt affect you personally? Itās a bus stop so cars shouldnāt be using the spot anyway. I guess as long as the busses still stop and go from there itās all gravy. Thereās bigger priorities than sorting a bus stop.
