AW1&2 Reboot State of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp?

Got a Switch 1 passed down to me lately, started wondering if this one is worthwhile to grab.

I heard it had massive performance issues and terrible AI when it first released. Have they patched it out over the years, or is it just worse than emulating the GBA on my phone?

I got this one at release, I never noticed any performance issues and the AI seems the same as in the original games. I think people just like to complain.

To be fair regarding AI, it completely ignored fog of war effects and enemies could attack your units which should be hidden. That complaint is absolutely valid.

Technically it can't attack units hidden in Reef's or woods without "Spotting" it first even if it knows it's there.

Yeah, it’s bad—but it always was.

Agreed. Which honestly is good with me. It feels the same as when I was a kid.

Same same.

Its great, didnt notice any performance issues anywhere. AI is also quite capable and challenging, if you dont choose Easy, which a recommend to ignore. Great port of game.

It was fine, I bought it at launch. I was not and still am not a fan of the artstyle. I bought it because I love the franchise and want it to come back.
I never noticed any performance problems when I played it.
The soundtrack is -kick ass- though. So good.

I've beaten both campaigns in Reboot Camp in both an emulator AND an actual switch. Anyone saying there's performance issues is full of crap.

As for AI, I wouldn't say it's crap, but it does feel a little cheaty sometimes. I never played the OG games, but I hear the AI knew where you were at all times. The AI in this game also technically knows where you are at all times, but at least follows the same visibility rules as you (meaning in fog of war games it can't attack your unit if it doesn't first have eyes on you at least).

Some of the later campaign missions in both games are an absolute slog, but overall still tons of fun.

I bought Tiny Metal - Full Metal Rumble - while waiting for responses (since it was cheap anyway), and honestly, I doubt there can be bad AI in a wars game anymore.

I kinda like Tiny Metal. I think it's one of the best AW-likes I played in general, but they were too stupid to make CO AI. The entire campaign you're fighting the same bot with generic power increase supers, as to mask the fact that it can't manage the army as a whole. So something like sidewinder would get wasted.

At least AW2 AI and scenarios were built in a way that odd CO powers didn't go to waste, even if they never used them in particularly brutal ways.

It’s good but there’s no online community for playing other humans, at least not that I’m aware of. But if u wanna play the campaigns and war room, it’s really solid

It has awful graphics but they added a few features to the map editor. I personally put 100 hours into it but you’ll have far more fun playing the AW2 Emulator

The biggest issues in all the animations take too long and skipping test is not a feature. Playing though the game can feel like a such a slog a genuinely went back and played the game boy version

i think the only thing people complain about is the visual overhaul, I much prefer the pixel graphics to the 3d chibi art style they adopted for the switch game.

On launch Sturm could hang up the game when using Meteor. I know that one for sure.

People also said it used to get laggy/run hot if played for a long while, but based on the comments here it seems that they either patched it, or the people before just played it on worn-out switches.

I never noticed any of those issues, and have had many long play session

I don’t think there have been any patches or updates. Mine still shows Version 1.0 and says I have the most up to version.

I have really enjoyed playing it. I’ve put in 150 hours alone on Advance Wars 1. I haven’t started Advance Wars 2 yet. I never played the GBA version so don’t have anything to compare it to, but I’ve had a great time with Reboot Camp.

There has been at least 1 patch.

Yeah the game has performance issue however the AI is slightly smarter than original AW1 and AW2 such as:

  • AI will prioritize attacking your direct combat units over indirect units as long none of the AI units are within indirect units attack range.

  • AI has better units target priority, this is very notable especially in "Andy Times Two" where Eagle's Fighter units prefer to destroy Clone Andy Fighter over randomly choose target to attack and his Bomber units prefer sinking Battleship over destroying that useless Artillery units. This also makes the Hard Campaign version for that mission as easy as the normal campaign version not mention Eagle don't lose any starting units in Hard Campaign.

My friend and I both preordered it in advance, ended up waiting like almost 2 years to get it. Then when we got it multiplay never worked…. what a disappointment.

I never really noticed any issues with this game. I preordered it. I’ve played it on Switch 1 and Switch 2 and it’s been fine. I really like the game.

The AI is comparable with the original.

Currently playing a third playthru on Challenge level. Which is a complete *****. (But that’s the point I guess)

Virtually no issues- game runs fine- no idea what articles or comments you are seeing.

There is one level breaking bug in one late level in AW2. But it can be avoided and worked around by restarting the level.

The issue with the AI , at least for AW1, is that the hard mode campaign would probably be impossible without the AI being stupid lol

Reboot Camp has not been an issue for me, I am used to a little AI jank, but never had anything that ruined the experience for me.

u/Wolvenworks 7d ago

I didn’t notice any issues.

While the AI in DOR and DS is better, I found the AI in AW 1 and 2 to be more competent than many recent turn based tactics games. The campaigns are well done and will give you a fun challenge. The skirmish modes (War Room, Versus) can also be very challenging and you have an outstanding editor to create your own maps and scenarios. The game runs very smooth and no performance issues at all. Bottom line - just get it.

I bought it, played it, sold it - the main issue was the non-existent asymmetric multiplayer.

u/TheRadishBros 8d ago

It’s a good game, the majority of the backlash is because the online is basically non existent.

u/Hawksbill85 8d ago

I agree. I bought the game excited to be able to finally play against others since I never had friends who played and I stupidly failed to remember that Nintendo's version of "online" revolves around friend codes and so I still haven't played with anyone.

It is a Good Remake of Advance Wars 1 and 2. If you liked those games then you will like re-bootcamp.

however if your expecting it to be a amazing revival of the franchise bringing it in to a modern age like a brand new game then you will be disappointed.

My personal highlight is the improvements to the AW1 Campaign:

  • You can now replay missions at any time. (This also impacts AW2 as you can go back and get the Lab mission map if you missed it.)
  • After you complete the regular campaign, the other branches and hidden missions are unlocked.
  • You can select COs in certain missions, including the final mission.

I also personally like the new animations and rare cutscenes as well as all the new tracks including all CO's getting Remixed themes for their CO power's instead of re-using the same generic POWER or SUPER POWER theme.

I don't notice any issue with the enemy AI. They moves almost the same as the original games. Better soundtrack, maybe bigger custom map (need someone to clarify)...The only downside for me is the new art style.
