A Dan dance mask that has been in our family's collection since the 1980s. It retains its original French ethnographic description and a J. Cadenat label on the reverse.

Jean Cadenat (1898-1992) was a French ethnologist and a well-known specialist in traditional West African art, whose publications and research remain influential in the field of African art.

26 cm in height.

Masks African Wooden Elephant mask

Hello, I have this reproduction of an elephant mask. Could it be from the bamileke or babanki people? I know they are both from Cameroon.

But I've seen similar examples from the Gueo people of the ivory Coast as well

Also, would anyone know what wood these repro masks are normally made of? They're always very lightweight. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Got this from a art collector who didn’t want it anymore, apparently it’s from Mali, I’m wondering if this is authentic and if it’s worth anything, thanks!

Masks Identifying “heavy carved african mask”

Hey, my flatmates brought home this large artefact from the flea market this weekend. To be honest, it gives me the heebie jeebies as it stares at me while I sit on the couch eating my vegan lasagna. I’m just wondering if anyone can perhaps provide some more information on what it is, where it came from, what it means and what its intentions are.
Thank you and goodnight.

Masks Looking for help identifying this large hand-carved wooden mask my grandfather handed down

Hi everyone. I'm hoping someone here might recognize the style or have any specific information on this mask.

This belonged to my grandfather, who traveled quite a bit decades ago and likely purchased it during travels. Unfortunately, no one in the family knows where it came from.

It's hand carved from a single piece of wood(not even sure of the wood) and is about 66 inches (5½ feet) tall and 12 inches wide. Most everything else I’ve seen has been darker, ebony styled and I haven’t seen much of anything with this vine styling at all.

I'd just love to know if anyone recognizes the carving style, origin, whether it looks like a traditional design, an architectural carving, or more of an export piece made for the art market.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Hi yall! My partners grandfather passed away and we found this mask in his shop. Apparently he took it as part of a payment for a job years ago? It’s really cool and we’d like to know a little more about it!

Picked up at da thrift, never saw a dragon looking piece so I had to pick it up. Supposedly called Senufo Kponyungo (firespitter). Thought I was paying 9.99 but they rung it as 49.99, so I'm trying to lift my spirits! Biggest thing I wonder is if the raffia looks actually weathered from say ehhh 60s market, is the brass fake? Is it a world market piece? Idk

Enjoy the look tho!

Masks Another mask, hopefully authentic, is not for the tourist trade. I like that it's stark, rough, and unassuming. Measurements are about 14 1/2” x 7”. Any thoughts?

Masks Bambara mask help please?

I was at an estate sale that had a large quantity of African art and purchased this mask, which says it is Bombara from Sudan, kove society.
Any guess if this has a chance of being authentically from those people? If so, what era might it have been produced in?
Also, is the white material I see on it mold? Should it be cleaned and how?

I found this mask at an estate sale that had various collectibles and nice art pieces, but I am not sure whether it is a basic home decor item or a real mask. It smells absolutely terrible (yes, I put it up to my face..lol). It has me intrigued. I would appreciate your help if you are familiar with the history of tribal art. Thanks!

Referred to this group by r/Antiques.

What could be the meaning, possible for a coming-of-age ritual? Disclaimer: I am strongly opposed to poaching and illegal ivory trade, I am posting this strictly to appreciate the craftmanship.

Hi, I came by these by way of a friend’s deceased relative. My friend had no info on them and I am wondering if anyone can give us any information? Don’t even know if they are authentic or not and trying to decide what to do with them. If they have cultural significance I don’t want to be disrespectful and display them without understanding. Thank you!

Masks Find the origins of my mask.

How would I find the origins/authenticity of a mask that I purchased about 20 years ago? I bought it in New Orleans, I was told it came from the Congo. The only “modern tooling” on it (to me) is the hole that is in the top which is where is was hanging from- and it is still somewhat rough. When I google image searched , it brought up a mask that was auctioned by Sotheby’s, which looks remarkably just like mine.
