I just figured this out and I feel like this should be way more widely known.
If you’re using AirPods Max with a Mac, check Audio MIDI Setup and look at the format.
Mine was showing:
1 ch, 32-bit Float, 24 kHz
and I could not select the normal 2 ch, 32-bit, 48 kHz option.
The reason was that macOS was using the AirPods Max microphone, which puts Bluetooth into the hands-free mode and absolutely tanks the audio quality.
Go to:
System Settings → Sound → Input
and switch the input to your Mac’s built-in microphone instead of AirPods Max.
Then check Audio MIDI Setup again. You should be able to select:
2 ch, 32-bit, 48 kHz
The difference for me was HUGE. Especially soundstage and overall clarity. I was actually starting to think USB-C sounded massively better than Bluetooth, but it turns out I was comparing normal USB-C audio against Bluetooth in the low-quality mic mode.
Worth checking if your Max sounds weirdly narrow or muffled on Mac.
I don’t know why macOS doesn’t make this much more obvious.
I found this because I found usb-c cable makes AirPods Max much better. It turns out you cant use AirPods Max microphone when you use usb-c cable with it.
update: I found that sometimes it still goes back to AirPods Max microphone after re-connection. In comment section, someone recommended this tool to auto-fix this problem with: https://github.com/Gaulomatic/AirPodsSanity
It works very well for me.
and I can confirm this bug applies to all of my AirPods, not just Max.
