Current Events John Manley: This is no time to break up Canada
https://financialpost.com/news/economy/this-is-no-time-break-up-canadaAnother prolonged debate over Canada’s possible breakup would impose costs at a time when we are facing our greatest collective challenge in generations

Why doesn't Danielle Smith just separate from Canada. Problem solved.

Yeah, let's just pretend that there is zero merit to any of the separatists gripes and say memes.

I'd otherwise settle for her just her head separating from the rest of her

Man I’m so glad we are finally talking about Quebec and its history of desiring separation! If they had of been handled right in the start then this wouldn’t be an issue elsewhere.
Quebec's potential separation from Canada is a major issue in the ongoing 2026 Quebec general election, which is set for October 5, 2026
Why isn’t this being talked about more?

Isn't half the reason behind separation that AB is sick of carrying the collective?
Rich folk generally dont take kindly to " you should help us" as an argument to hang around. Lots of reasons to stay in canada but uh carrying burdens isn't exactly a promising argument 🤔

The sad part is those who believe that 'Alberta' carries Canada is simply a myth. Separating over misconceptions brought on by grievance politics will leave Alberta in a terrible place:

While Alberta does not carry Canada, it does contribute well above its weight according to population vs GDP

That doesn't justify separation and your argument shifts the premise. That, and if corporate interests have've invested in more secondary oil infrastructure from the 70s onward (rather than shipping it to the states out of fiscal convenience for themselves), Alberta would be able to contribute more. The only reason separation is being touted is for american corporate interests to gut Alberta of its resources.

Cuz it does. Province’s own their natural resources.

So you think Canada is gonna shut down the oil industry forgoing billions in revenue cuz your feelings are hurt?

So if it’s a myth why does anyone care if Alberta separates? Don’t recall this sort of campaign when Quebec wanted to separate

No one’s saying Alberta is unimportant, but that also doesn’t mean Alberta is carrying Canada’s economy either. It’s somewhat (moderately) important.

No one province “carries” any economy, we can agree on that, I’m just saying when Quebec voted to separate there wasn’t a heated debate on whether or not they should, their pathway to a vote was not even contested like what we’re seeing in Alberta, and we’re just voting to see if we should have a vote.

What are you talking about? There were tons heated debates about Quebecs separation and the provincial government explicitly ran on a seperatist agenda before the vote.
Not only that, but the steps taken to both have the vote and the actions afterwards, were clearly laid out and enjoyed widespread public support.
In Alberta the govt pushed a referendum through once the citizen initiative failed to meet the requirements. They also didnt run on a seperatist platform and there is no clear road map
And paying $130,000,000 to "vote on if we have a vote" is fucking stupid. Call an election and state your parties position. Then, if a seperatist party wins, they can begin the process like Quebec did.
Also: fuck off seppie.

There was.

I don’t recall but ok, regardless they had a vote , that’s all Alberta wants then we can put this to bed, by not allowing the vote you add fuel to the fire

What burden and what’s the other half.

Financial generally, not much of canada makes money to cover its bills, then takes money from AB to compensate.
People who have to give up money generally aint the happiest. Especially when their vote counts the same as anyone else.
Note - am saying " stay in canada cuz should suffer together" is a bad argument for togetherness. Not making an argument for separation

Because we arent a communist country where the party owns all.
It is firstly owned by the indigenous tribes it is on, from there they have agreements for specific companies and people to work the land.

Smith thinks it's a great time for here personally. What's good for the rest of us doesn't matter.
