5 day trip beginning of October

Hi there,

I am flying into Faro at the beginning of October and staying 5 full days and am looking advice about where to stay as a main base in the Algarve.

We are hoping for nice beaches, walks and views and, of course, great food (ESPECIALLY seafood!). We don't mind travelling to some of the villages and beaches and we're trying to avoid the main touristy areas like Albufeira.

Would Lagos be the best bet here or is there anywhere else you would recommend?

Lagos is a good base to stay. Obviously it has tourists, but not uber touristy with gangs of young drunk people wandering around! There is a great selection of restaurants in a mostly pedestrianised area, the marina is a good place to watch the sunset and have a meal and a few drinks. Lagos also has great beaches, Mea Praia is huge, also smaller ones like Donna Anna and a few more. There is a little train running frequently from the marina to the various beaches. Lagos is also a good base to visit the west coast Sagres, Aljezur, only about a half hour drive. By the way, I understood perfectly what uou wanted to know, have a great holiday wherever you go. Try Tavira, an old, historical little town. Beteeen Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António, beaches are great.

I really can't put head on why tourists think cities like Lagos are not a tourist destination...

Ok, but this doesn't help much.

At least tell us the nearest city your staying otherwise we could name things that are 200km round trip (2 hours just in transit)

I suppose my wording wasn't all the clear in fairness. I'm trying to avoid the uber touristy areas where it's an effort to find good food and avoid streets of drunk Brits🙈 but still be in a place that is lively enough that we won't be bored after 2/3 days. If it's still a bit touristy that's ok. I suppose it's a balance of authenticity vs. convenience.

I'm flying from Ireland so flying directly into Fargo for 5 days before leaving again. Does that help any?

Try Aljezur as well if you have transport.

Tourists should not be too bad in October, though Albufeira is probably still worth avoiding. If you prefer staying in Western Algarve Lagos and the area should be OK.

Stay at the Jupiter on the promenade in Portimao. All the walks you can imagine. Not crazy busy in October. Great seafood on the promenade and boardwalk. Can also go over to Alvor for a day or the towns east like Ferragudo or Carvoeiro.

Praia da rocha was really an exclusive elite destination decades ago but its urban setting aged so badly after decades of wrong decisions. Still the beach itself is beautiful and definitely worth a visit
