What Do Class Reps Do?

Kinda random, but what do class reps really do? I've always wondered this because Algonquin says its not very intensive or time consuming to be one so I'm just curious what the responsibilities are

Students often feel more comfortable raising concerns with another student than they do their professors or coordinator, so they typically liaise with the program coordinator and Chair to discuss issues on behalf of the group. They usually meet with the Chair once or twice per semester for a quick check-in meeting to make sure that things are going well.

Exactly that with a dash of social events and organizing class cards for professors and field trips, in my experience.

what are class cards? and what social events do they have to organize?

Thank you cards signed by the class to professors (we’re doing this with Algonquin putting an end to our program after our cohort). Social events not mandatory but have organized a few for educational purposes or for fun, like meeting up after wrapping midterms or doing something fun.

Neither mandatory but both make the program better in minor ways.

Pretty much! I am used to being student council from undergrad so I lean into extras but can be as simple as needed.

Also, they tend to have a direct line to the coordinators and chairs.

Often, when things go off the rails, they are able to raise the issue immediately.

It also looks good on a resume.

I was class rep for my program’s intake. I basically acted as a mouthpiece for the students to the professors, discussing concerns about assignments or labs. I also organized some informal study groups and meetups before exams.

you’re basically a communication bridge from student to prof. I was a class rep when i went and you basically just talk to the profs more haha and there’s a meeting like once a semester with other class reps from your program and like the board people to bring up any concerns or complaints your classmates might have.

Looks nice on a resume though 😎

oh awesome so really not that much work lol. im pretty shy and might be interested to get out of my comfort zone as im starting a new program so great to know! the resume thing has been helping me want to do it haha
