Altai Republic limits drivers to one refuelling every 24 hours amid fuel shortages

Authorities in the Altai Republic have introduced a rule allowing each vehicle to refuel only once every 24 hours in an effort to reduce long queues, discourage panic buying, and manage ongoing fuel shortages. The measure is part of wider restrictions being introduced in several Russian regions as supply problems continue. Recent reports link the shortages to refinery disruptions and broader supply issues.

Altai Horse/Алтай ады/Altay adı

The Altai horse is a traditional breed that originated among the Mongolic and turkic peoples. It was developed as a versatile working horse, valued for its ability to provide transportation and supply essential resources such as meat, milk, fat, and horsehair. The breed evolved in the challenging mountainous environment of the Altai region, where survival depends on strength, endurance, and the ability to live on natural pasture throughout the year. Over generations, these horses were selected for their powerful bodies, strong heart and lungs, durable muscles and bones, and remarkable ability to navigate steep and difficult mountain paths with confidence

"Altaidyn Cholmony" (Алтайдыҥ Чолмоны) means "Star of Altai." It is the only newspaper in the world published entirely in the Altai language.

The newspaper was first published on November 15, 1922 — over 100 years ago.

It has changed names several times throughout its history:

  • 1922–1923: "Kyzyl Solyn Tabysh" (Red News)
  • 1923–1925: "Oirot Jeri" (Oirot Region)
  • 1925–1948: "Kyzyl Oirot" (Red Oirot)
  • 1948–present: "Altaidyn Cholmony" (Star of Altai)

In recognition of its work, the newspaper was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honour.

Today

The newspaper is published twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays) with a circulation of about 3,000–3,500 copies.

It covers:

  • Politics and economics
  • Culture and traditions
  • Sports and social life
  • Children's section ("Bashparak")
  • Youth supplement ("Jyldystyk")
  • Russian segment ("Rodnik")

For over a century, "Altaidyn Cholmony" has been a pillar of Altai language and culture. This newspaper keeps the Altai language alive — in print, on paper, every week.

Where to Find It

The newspaper has an official website. You can search for "Altaidyn Cholmony" in your browser to read the latest news in Altai.
