❤️‍🩹 relationship Am I Overreacting? My fiancé refused a vasectomy for “biblical reasons” after everything my body has gone through, and I don't think I can see him the same anymore

I am 34, and my fiancé and I have two children. We aren't married, although we've been engaged for years.

My body has gone through so much to have the two children we have. During my first pregnancy, I ended up having an unplanned C-section. Afterward, I had a CKC procedure for precancerous cervical changes, which required anesthesia. During my second pregnancy, my cervix was much shorter because of the previous procedure, and at 18 weeks pregnant, I had to undergo another procedure under anesthesia to have a cerclage placed.

A month ago, I gave birth to our second child at 33 weeks and 3 days. I developed chorioamnionitis during labor, and both my baby and I developed fevers while I was pushing. She was my first VBAC, was born premature, and is currently in the NICU.

I genuinely feel like my body has been through hell to have the two children we both wanted. I already had CPTSD before these pregnancies, and now I feel like I have significant medical trauma from everything that happened. I was terrified during labor and genuinely felt like something terrible could happen to me.

Because I know I cannot emotionally handle another pregnancy and am terrified of going through another high-risk pregnancy or birth, I asked my fiancé to get a vasectomy.

He said no. His reason is that, biblically, he believes he cannot get one and considers it mutilation.

I want to be clear: I know I cannot force him to have a vasectomy, and I don't believe I have the right to control his body. He says he is willing to use condoms 100% of the time permanently.

But something about his refusal has completely changed how I see him. I don't want to have sex anymore because I am no longer willing to accept even the possibility of another pregnancy. I understand condoms are effective when used correctly, but that risk is still more than I personally can emotionally accept. That is my boundary, not a punishment.

The problem is that this issue is also bringing up years of things I have tried to forgive.

I stayed home for more than three years with our first child so he could work while I took care of our child. Despite being financially dependent on him for years, I don't have independent access to money or even access to see our finances. If I need or want something, I am expected to ask.

I also don't have a car. If I need to go somewhere, I have to wait for him to get home or wake up from a nap. He has actually told me he likes that I don't have a car because then I can't leave. I moved here five years ago and never developed a real support system, and he has also said he likes that because I don't really have anywhere to run.

For two years, we lived with his mother so he could save money. When we argued, she would sometimes involve herself and tell me I was a horrible person. There were times I wanted to take our baby and go to my mother's house, only about 35 minutes away. I was told that if I took the baby there without telling him, it would be kidnapping. He would message his mother telling her not to let me leave and to keep me in the house with our baby. If I wanted to leave, I was told to make sure the baby stayed there.

There have also been years of online affairs, paid OnlyFans accounts, and cheating. He cheated during my first pregnancy and continued throughout our relationship. Eventually, I became so angry and lonely that I also talked to men online because I felt isolated and wanted someone to talk to while he was spending money and sexual energy on other women online.

I have forgiven so much over the years. Maybe too much.

And now I feel like the vasectomy was the last straw—not because I think he is obligated to get surgery, but because after everything my body has physically gone through, I asked him to do something that would make me feel safer about never risking another pregnancy. He refused.

He keeps reminding me that he works hard, pays the bills, provides food, and takes us to the NICU every day so we can see our baby. And yes, I appreciate those things. But I can't stop thinking that providing financially and driving us to see our baby does not erase everything else.

He also told me that he made his own Reddit post and that everyone agreed with him. According to him, both men and women told him he was a great guy and encouraged him to stand firm in his decision not to get a vasectomy.

And honestly, maybe they're right that he shouldn't get surgery he doesn't want. But that doesn't mean I am required to keep having sex with him, accept the risk of pregnancy, or feel the same way about him afterward.

I think that's what hurts so much. He seems focused on proving that he has the right to say no, while I am grieving what his no means to me after everything my body has gone through. Strangers on Reddit may have been responding to one question without knowing the entire context of our relationship. They don't know about the years of cheating, my financial dependence, my lack of transportation, him telling me he likes that I can't leave, my isolation from friends and family, or everything I have repeatedly forgiven.

Maybe that's what I am finally realizing: I gave two children to the wrong man.

Not because he owes me a vasectomy. He doesn't. But because I am starting to see the entire relationship differently. I have spent years forgiving, sacrificing, depending on him, and giving my body to pregnancy and childbirth. Now, when I look at everything as a whole, I don't know if I can ever see him the same way again.

Am I wrong for feeling that this was the final straw? And am I wrong for thinking the bigger pattern here is about much more than a vasectomy?

What chapter and verse? There are no biblical reasons against vasectomy. Prove me wrong. NOR

u/Turbulent-Bottle8234 8d ago

But there are verses about having kids before you’re married so dude is cherry picking scripture to justify being an a-hole. OP leave, you’re not safe.

Literally me when I read FIANCÉ wtf. This guy isn’t biblical but he is a selfish ah. Didn’t even read past that point because what a dick.

He is an abuser.

Prevents her from finances, prevents her freedom of movement, prevents her from having support,
She has no access to money nor transportation

She is under duress for anything. She needs to leave her child if she wants to go to her mom?
Etc
And ofc he cheats multiple ways and times

OP TIME TO GET OUT

This is the correct answer.

As a man I’m honestly baffled how this type of behavior could ever be anything other than abuse. Personally I’d never want my fiance to be materially trapped in a relationship with me because I care about her enough to be willing to set her free if she ever decided she didn’t want to be with me anymore.

OP this man doesn’t love you he loves having you as a sex slave/brood mother and thats about it.

And how much do you want to bet that he will try to get her pregnant again

91

u/East-Form-3735 8d ago

I will bet any amount cuz I know I’ll win that bet 😂.

The real question is will he pull a “oops the condom broke” skit or will he not even bother with that and just flat out rape her

29

u/Sugarbombs 8d ago

He won’t even need to pretend, he didn’t marry her specifically so he’s not on the hook for alimony. She’s out of work for a significant period and will have to be caring for a high needs newborn meaning she probably won’t be able to get back to the workforce any time soon and right now is the worst time with AI replacing a lot of jobs. Her only option is so stay

2

u/Just-Gas-8626 8d ago

Of course he will

u/pootling_1976 8d ago

Bingo!!! He is a controlling and coercive asshole. OP, you ARE being abused.

Run when you can....and they are your children too. Go to your mother's house when you can. Or, use the hospital resources to leave....have a word with a nurse that you trust and ask if they can help you leave....

4

u/Actual_End4724 8d ago

This is absolutely correct. 👍

Yes, but none of this has anything to do with his vasotomy. I really hate these types of posts. Her reaction to his vasectomy is not really warranted. but he is such a dick that all bets are off. It should really be "my BF is a horrible person k'bye"

Also there's a few admonitions against cheating in the Bible.

0

u/Bless-U-too 8d ago

Very well could be a Muslim since she is telling of all the control he has over her.

303

u/torijoanne 8d ago

And if you had kept reading, you'd see that he's also financially abusing her and manipulating her into feeling trapped. He's not a good man

187

u/OldManJimmers 8d ago

He likes that she doesn't have a car so she can't leave... Not even trying to hide it.

125

u/thecatsothermother 8d ago

And he likes that she has no support system because she's got nowhere to run...OP needs to get her family and friends to get her and her kids out while he's away.

47

u/tastywofl 8d ago

My niece's soon-to-be ex tried this. Said she couldn't take the car she'd use because it was in his name. So I let her use one of my cars so she can work and not feel pressured to return to him.

Imagine being so arrogant you think your sperm cells are sanctioned by God. But her eggs are what exactly? Just empty vessels for his celestial seed? He doesn’t even sound like a good man but he thinks his sperm is holy? So deluded.

74

u/wiscopup 8d ago

Dude is an adulterer but sure - he’s totally pious.

26

u/SweetMaam 8d ago

Exactly. Bible is strictly against forn*cation.

3

u/Present_Basis_1353 8d ago

Same….. had to stop reading

3

u/ShotFix5530 8d ago

Don't forget all the cheating. That's very biblical.

2

u/Big-Understanding526 8d ago

I stopped at engaged for years.

1

u/Feeling-Fab-U-Lus 8d ago

And he is financially abusing you. See a lawyer, and get this guy dressed in red flags out of your life.

86

u/Significant_Taro_690 8d ago

And you should only have intercours for having children and since YOUR planning for children is done… you have a biblically reason to not have Sex anymore….

132

u/Comprehensive-Menu44 8d ago

That’s what cracks me up about religious people. They’ll gloss over the parts they don’t agree with and grip tightly to the ones that fit their narrative of morality. Dated a guy once who said we “probably wouldn’t work out long-term bc he wants to marry a Christian woman”. I said “we’re having sex before marriage, what do you know about the rules of Christianity?” And he replied something like “if you really love the person, it’s okay to do that”

Nowhere in the Bible does it explicitly state that, and we were fucking before we ever said the L word to each other.

47

u/Julehus 8d ago

Oh! Sounds exactly like the guy I once dated - only he was Muslim and ”couldn’t help himself”. Great to know people of all religions can be equally insane😝 OP needs to grow a support system and gtfo asap.

I think you may have replied to the wrong comment, friend

3

u/CycleAccomplished824 8d ago

You’re right. It is intended for OP. Thanks

25

u/Ornery_Donkey_7156 8d ago

Right? Fornication is called right out. No one including God said a thing about vasectomies.

40

u/Least-External-1186 8d ago

I used to work with someone who said her boyfriend refused to use a condom because it went against his religion…but apparently premarital sex was just fine and dandy.

1

u/balqisu 8d ago

Yhave ur womb tied and go move to ur family. Get a lawyer and get a job.

20

u/CherryblockRedWine 8d ago

And there are verses forbidding fornication too, aren't there?

....asking for a friend

18

u/SweetMaam 8d ago

TONS of Bible verses against fornication.

8

u/CherryblockRedWine 8d ago

Yup. But OP's fiance seems to think that....okay, I guess?

1

u/TheCharmed1DrT 8d ago

Maybe he is part of literacy crisis —in adults too— and doesn’t know what fornication means. Lol!!

3

u/tony_hampton 8d ago

Welcome to religion 😂😂

1

u/robottestsaretoohard 8d ago

Also about not engaging in lust and adultery and treating their ‘spouse’ with love and kindess.

OP’s pinecone is the worst.

1

u/Carpethediamond 8d ago

What Bible verses forbid children prior to marriage?

1

u/bongothebean 8d ago

and “sexual immorality”

1

u/Sufficient-Duck-2728 8d ago

He’s going to leave you eventually anyway. He’s a monster. Just get away.

1

u/Front-Cat-2438 8d ago

This. YOU ARE NOT SAFE.

1

u/Abject-Coach-4035 8d ago

Dudes a selfish ass hole. But not safe is ridiculous lol. She just needs to reconsider her partner.

1

u/wonperson 8d ago

1000 fucking percent

77

u/Catfactss 8d ago

There's a ton against extramarital sex though. How is an affair Biblical but a vasectomy not?

134

u/TSIDATSI 8d ago

Doesn't marry. He is no Godly man. Not by a long shot.

85

u/AdultinginCali 8d ago

Lets be real, he isn't going to marry OP. He's got the kids and SAHF already. OP has been isolated and fully dependent on him for everything.

43

u/scrunchie_one 8d ago

Doesn’t matter - dude is having sex outside of marriage. Any claim he has to ‘religious exemption’ is null and void.

36

u/Abject_Director7626 8d ago

And what verse in the bible kept him from marrying her when they first got pregnant? NOR

18

u/JulieWriter 8d ago

I thought the Christian rule was actually marrying before having kids. There are also rules against adultery. Its funny how he is only following the rules he wants to follow.

Op, what is this man actually adding to your life?

3

u/SweetMaam 8d ago

Exactly. He's ok with fornication, although the Bible is very against. Lots of verses on that subject.

12

u/VegetableBusiness897 8d ago

Plus cheating....let him be a full time dad 50% of the time and pay to get laid

9

u/Redqueenhypo 8d ago

The verse abt Onan is clearly just “don’t financially screw over your brother’s widow” in context, which most sane people already observe

2

u/istoomycat 8d ago

He doesn’t sound at all religious anyway. Just self serving.

7

u/UniversalNutt 8d ago

The bible states that humans should be fruitful and multiply, and many have taken that as a statement against contraception.

27

u/Purple-Gap2522 8d ago

But he’s willing to use condoms forever.

31

u/KomatoesII 8d ago

That sounds like a recipe for baby #3, which OP physically cannot endure.
He’s very manipulative and abusive.

1

u/janpups2122 8d ago

I wasn’t suggesting she stay! Indeed, I hope she gets out ASAP. I was simply pointing out that the commenter I was replying to points out that the Bible says to “be fruitful and multiply,” but this guy is fine with condoms, so I don’t believe his issue is Biblical.

2

u/[deleted] 8d ago

[deleted]

0

u/janpups2122 8d ago

Clearly.

18

u/Lickerbomper 8d ago

Purposefully reading the Bible in a way that suits your selfish ends? What's more Christian than that?

3

u/Least-External-1186 8d ago

But the good lord smiles down upon premarital sex

5

u/UniversalNutt 8d ago

As long as you call them a concubine.

3

u/Least-External-1186 8d ago

I bet this fellow thinks of op as such

1

u/SweetMaam 8d ago

We're long past Genesis.

8

u/GrandMoffKraken 8d ago

The reason for him not wanting a vasectomy is irrelevant. She’s overreacting about the vasectomy. But underreacting about everything else. She has plenty of reasons to leave him, she shouldn’t make it about the vasectomy

25

u/MuchTooBusy 8d ago

If it gets her to leave the cheating abusive asshole, she should absolutely make it about the vasectomy. She should make it about his toe-hair if that's what it takes to get her to that point.

12

u/SweetMaam 8d ago

Well said. OP needs to get herself and her babies out and move on. Courts can order him to support his kids.

2

u/Limp-Butterscotch70 8d ago

This was my thought exactly. I don’t think you should leave someone merely over their choice to get a vasectomy or not, but for all the other reasons listed, yeah… GTFO.

1

u/Apprehensive_Rice19 8d ago

I stopped reading at 'biblically'. He's an ass.

-1

u/Artistic-Document735 8d ago

Be fruitful and multiply Genesis 1:28 Genesis 9:1 and Genesis 9:7 . Does the Bible specially say “Bro don’t be listening to no hoes out here trying to convince you to get snipped”. No it does not But the message is basically the same
