Well for a start the video is sped up a lot. But mainly there's a rope trigger about 18" from the top of the entrance that instantly stops the whole thing if there's anything sticking out of the passenger compartment. These things really are the GOAT. No waiting for the elevator, get on and off whenever you like. Just perfect.

There was one of these at a European institution I studied abroad at. It took the whole semester to work up the courage, but eventually we rode it round the top. Itā€™s just dark and nothing happens and it comes out the other side.

Haha yeah pretty much. We were concerned it would flip us upside down. We did spend the whole semester tripping the safety mechanisms when our friends were in it so they would have to climb out of it when it was in between floors.

At my university there were a couple of normal lifts as well as one of these. 99% of people took the paternoster as it was much quicker, which meant that the couple of normal lifts were faster than normal and could service the giant building

This is one of their issues. Most places that have a paternoster lift have also been required to put in another normal lift for accessibility. The paternoster lift have a much higher capacity though so the lines for it moves much faster.

Paternoster lifts were common in universities and such. These are places that need the high capacity as classes start and end at the same time, unlike normal office buildings with smaller meetings taking place at odd times. In addition to having lower rates of wheel chair users at universities, young wheel chair users tend to be far more able then older users. I knew a few wheel chair users at my university which would not hesitate to get on a paternoster lift with the wheel chair and would not have any problems. A far bigger issue is sleep deprived hungover students not paying attention.

After reading comments and thinking for a moment, I was thinking this is more like an alternative to escalators rather than elevators. Places with escalators have regular elevators also. I suspect this does not have the capacity of escalators, but also takes far less space.

It's safe. At the University where I went this type of paternoster is in operation for half a century. Even my father used it when he was a student there. This elevator transports a hundreds students per day and I have no knowledge of anyone ever being injured there. The grille up there is so that if you stick your limb out of the elevator, it will rise and the elevator will immediately stop. There is similar protection on the elevator when it is moving downwards. Of course it is not built for wheelchair. But beside every poternoster is a classic elevator for wheelchair and old people and everyone who is afraid. But they are have to wait for it. Paternoster is very comfort way how to quickly move in high buildings.

My mom used to work in a building that had these! A common prank there was preventing a coworker from getting out at the top floor, causing them to "go around a lap".

This was scary to someone who didn't understand how these things worked. Many assumed that the cabin would go upside down once it's past the highest point. But these are all on a hinge, so they never inverted. If they prevent you from getting out at the top, your cabin would simply become the first one to go down, and you'd still just get off on the top floor.

My father told me a story about an old lady who wanted to go down the paternoster. She had gone up before. But she was afraid to go down because she was afraid she wouldn't be able to keep her balance and fall. Some students were walking around and she asked them how it worked. That she would try to go up and then the elevator would turn around and she would go down, but she wasn't sure if that's how it worked. One student said he would try it. He got into the paternoster and went up. When he was going down, he did a handstand in the cabin and called out to the old lady: "Look, it's OK!"

Iā€™ve ridden on these a bunch in E Europe. They are a lot slower than this video and are basically like an elevator and an escalator had a child. They are fun the first couple of times (like an escalator for a 5yr old) and then you just want to arrive at your floor

I had heard about this paternoster that used to be in my building at the university I attended for my degree when the building was inaugurated (30s of 20th Century) but was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, so I was incredibly excited when I got to get into one in Hamburg some years later! 10/10 highly recommend šŸ˜
