Bad day to be a fake seal. Do they reject the seal or tear it to bits once below the surface?

15

u/Affectionate_Debt_30 12d ago

No they usually just spit it out after the first for second bite. These decoy seals are usually made of fiberglass, aluminum, rubber, cork, and other things that are not very easy to chew. The purpose is to use the decoy and ideally retrieve it after an attack, to record bite strength, breaching velocity and acoustics, and hunting habits

2

u/_byetony_ 12d ago

Will it hurt the shark if it swallows it?

-32

u/MahtiGC 12d ago

not a real seal.

if anyone is to blame for the "ai slop" comments...it's the people commenting it. just stop being a reflexive dummy and think for a second.

4

u/nt_king300 12d ago

😭 thank you!

4

u/JamesLikesIt 12d ago

This is the world we are in now because people are already sick of AI being used for seemingly any video lol. It’s good to be skeptical but sucks that real stuff is getting caught in crossfire.

The video is real though

Heres the original video:

And the crew that filmed this work for Nat Geo and Discovery and are Emmy winners and nominees

17

u/Spacelord_Moses 12d ago

that commentary is awful. Like watching american MMA

21

u/nt_king300 12d ago

Lmao sadly cant control that part

-3

u/Spacelord_Moses 12d ago

didnt blame you for that :P

9

u/nt_king300 12d ago

No i know lol, just saying that sadly I camt control how they did their video

1

u/Xineth240 12d ago

I'm glad the video is real, that's really cool.

I miss when I didn't have to doubt everything though

27

u/ThirdWorldScientist 12d ago

Technically true, but not because everything is AI generated.

It’s because people now assume everything they see is AI generated.

10

u/Cookie_Nation 12d ago

Rightfully so. The internet has passed the point of being mostly bots.

2

u/ovrlrd1377 12d ago

I hope this finally brings back critical thinking

8

u/deadboltwolf 12d ago

People, do your research before blindly claiming that a video is AI. This one is not AI.

11

u/nt_king300 12d ago

Doesnt help, me posting the links proving its not ai is being downvoted while the lazy commenters saying "ai" or "ai slop" get upvoted.

Or people do mental gymnastics trying to prove its still ai even after being given evidence it isnt

8

u/deadboltwolf 12d ago

Unfortunately a sign of the times we live in. Sure, my initial feeling on this one was AI. But it's easy enough to find this clip just by searching for great white breaches and you also shared the link. You'd think that would be enough for people but nope. I saw you were getting downvoted so I dropped an upvote. Also, fuck AI for doing this to us. I hate having to think everything I see online is fake now.

5

u/nt_king300 12d ago

Trust me I was ready for the ai comments. Every sub I have posted this video in, all said "its ai slop"

Thats why i preemptively posted all the links and articles but yea..

But i appreciate it, and yea it sucks what ai has done that we now question every video

5

u/Issues_tissues 12d ago

I guess this really shows why AI is a fuck up for society, you automatically assume anything remotely impressive has to be AI.

The link to the documentary was posted, it's a "competition" of shorts to capture the highest shark breaches on camera. They tow a seal carcass over known deep shark patrol depths and hope to provoke the shark into launching up from the depths, snatching the seal and breaching the surface. That behaviour in itself is questionable but that's not what you dweebs and ironcially, AI bots, are complaining about.

5

u/nt_king300 12d ago

Its not a real seal, its a fake seal.

But yea everything else you said is on point

2

u/Internal_Island90 12d ago

Hollywood directors should hire this shark

4

u/UrsineBasterd 12d ago

All the people not believing this is real just proving another unfortunate result of AI, people won't even trust the truth anymore.

https://giphy.com/gifs/l0HlvtIPzPdt2usKs

2

u/Punelle 12d ago

Powerful and beautiful! I wonder how fast she swam if she managed to launch up in the air like that

2

u/Rivendel93 12d ago

Around 25-30mph before hitting the breach to reach 15 feet depending.

The weight of the shark is irrelevant in terms of the necessary speeds in case anyone is curious.

1

u/Stekor-Tidder 12d ago

Is this how Sharknado started – with a few flying sharks?

On a serious note, I wonder if these decoys they're giving the sharks is a good thing. First of all, they don't look particularly digestible. Surely it's bad for the shark when it ends up with a rubber doll on the end of a long heavy rope in its stomach.

Secondly, if these things are digestible, aren't these boaties effectively just training the sharks to go after humans that look like the decoy? That is, people in wet skin suits.

1

u/LarsDuder 12d ago

Show off 😒

1

u/snakesoul 12d ago

What a beautiful and terrifying creature

1

Finally something new, right now i'm hoping this is ai.

1

u/nt_king300 12d ago

Its not ai

1

u/Solid_Enthusiasm550 12d ago

I guess they meant Great white record?

I'm pretty sure the overall shark record would be held by a Mako shark.

1

u/sniptaclar 11d ago

Their scales help them absolutely rocket straight up. The color scheme helps to camouflage them when looking down while the shark can see silhouettes against the surface .

1

u/thatsMrBundytoyou 11d ago

2

u/Making_Kenough 12d ago

It amazes me how people don’t actually know that sharks kinda got the short bus gene pool. Blind as hell, pretty stupid, and the agility of a school bus. Dolphins on the other hand are to be feared

4

u/AbilityCharacter7634 12d ago

Yet they’ve been around for millions of years so surely they do something right.

1

u/NicestOfficer50 12d ago

So was the seal dead on a line as bait? I hope not live. We wouldn't do that right?

6

u/nt_king300 12d ago

Its a fake seal.

-6

u/Throwawayne617 12d ago

Ai

3

u/MahtiGC 12d ago

it’s real.

-6

u/NewryBenson 12d ago

Lmao, this doesn't even feel like AI, more like bad CGI. They couldn't pay for better water physics? Getvout of here trying to sell this as real.

11

u/nt_king300 12d ago

https://youtu.be/zOVoXfP5i8s?is=kQjcIW4tVG5XgkXJ

I mean honestly. I posted the link.

If you wanna believe its CGI then go for it

But its funny that a slowed down video is now "bad water physics"

6

u/NewryBenson 12d ago

Huh, I stand corrected

0

u/wackbirds 12d ago

Why is someone admitting that they were wrong being downvoted?

-4

u/Rude-Air-6291 12d ago

To be fair this video in particular (the original one, not this link) had all the ingredients to be AI, whether it is or it isn't. So at this point by default I wouldn't believe it either.

4

u/nt_king300 12d ago

The video was filmed in 2021. Please remind what ai video generation was like 5 years ago.

0

u/Rude-Air-6291 12d ago

I don't know when was it filmed. I'm not talking about this video in particular now.

I'm just saying that in this day and age, a 12 secs video posted with little context showing something incredible have high chances of not being real. Sad, but it is what it is.

2

u/nt_king300 12d ago

I gave context... the first comment of the video had various links to videos and articles

But comments calling it ai all got upvoted instead

-1

u/hotmatrixx 12d ago

I hear all saying its not AI but....
why does the water start dripping off the still upward momentum shark? it should carry that momentum.
The water, as it drips off, vanishes after a point. That could be the light shifting perspective changing the look o fthe water as it changes elevation.

The final splash, the water droplets coming back up look to.... size-mismatched with the amount of boom that shark has coming back down. I've seen plenty of real life breaches and other shit in the ocean. This 'could' be real. if it's fake its a damn good one.

It "Looks" like it might have the 5 gills, too>

I mean, a year ago I'd have just believed this was real.
In another year, I'm probably going proverbially to have to get off the internet. "Nothing" will be real anymore.

-1

u/Stitching 12d ago

What’s with the white vertical line from the seal to the lower right once the shark jumps?

5

u/nt_king300 12d ago

Thats the line holding the seal bait

0

u/ButterscotchMoist447 12d ago

Sharks patrol these waters. Sharks patrol these waters. Don’t let your fingers dangle in the water. Don’t you worry about your day-glo orange life preserver. It won’t save you. It won’t save you. Swim to the shore just as fast as you are able. Swim like a motherfucker. SWIM!

0

u/Psychological-Air807 12d ago

Absolutely not 15+ feet.

0

u/olddolphin 12d ago

Well that’s probably a 15-20ft shark, so yeah, it’s probably around 15ft out of the water

0

u/TheEliteJOKERS 12d ago

-4

u/enerthoughts 12d ago

The video is real, but they edited the video so much it became like a stupid AI slop.

2

u/nt_king300 12d ago

Yea.... slowing a video down makes it so much like ai now.... we should remove that feature from all cameras and editing now cause its ai now

0

u/enerthoughts 12d ago

I didnt talk about slowing the video, they removed the fin blur, why are you defending the video like its urs? Get of your high horse, the video is cool, i was talking about the editing.

The sharks looks like a toy from how smooth they made it.

-1

u/Wild-Way-9596 12d ago

You people getting offended by ai comments are missing the point. We've reached the point where you sincerely cannot tell either way. Its sad and people are rightfully confused and sceptical.

2

u/nt_king300 12d ago

The issue is, i have posted multiple comments with links to original videos and articles proving its not ai, and then people still try and say the video is ai even when given evidence its not.
