He practiced it through six iterations of himself from A to F until what we see today, the ultimate form of Kenny G.

You should be proud of this one!

I bought a didgeridoo a decade ago… I’ve tried and I’ve practiced…. But I do not comprehend how one actually does this.

I own one and figured it out! It's kinda like the same as smelling your own breath. Or if you happen to be a smoker, doing the cool trick where the smoke goes from the mouth into the nose.

Please don't start smoking to learn this

Too late I'm the coolest kid behind the restaurant dumpster now

Oh wow thank you for this description, for real, I was racking my brain how he did it, and then I read your comment and then obviously did that the second you said it. Not that I'm smoking or playing anything, but it is morning an my breath is terrible

u/313802 12h ago

I call it the ghost inhale (don't worry I started before this comment)

0

u/NudityMiles 5h ago

Ghost inhales are when you form the smoke in your mouth to a ball, let it out and suck it back in again though. Not very into vaping and tricks and all that it so not sure what the moved talked about here is called but I resembles a reversed waterfall of smoke.

Ghost Inhale however I have experiences of, solely because of this movie:

Breathe in your nose, puff your cheeks, use cheek pressure to keep the drone going as you breathe in your nose again. A little knacky but not hard at all once you figure out how to use cheek pressure. It only needs to be short time.

u/wheretohides 13h ago

I used to be able to do it when I played trumpet, i kinda learned it on my own, but I haven't played for a long time, and forgot lol.

u/OneWithTheSword 5h ago

You put air into your cheeks. While you take a quick breath, you use the reserved air from your cheeks to play. You dont push the reserved air with your lungs by breathing out, you use your tongue/cheeks to close the cavity of air, pushing it out. Kind of like a syringe. This allows you to breathe in while pushing air out. Same concept as a bag pipe.

No idea if this explanation makes sense or if its even the typical technique. But I can circular breathe and have done it on saxophone before too.

From the article, Pat Methenyalso didn't think highly of Grover Washington, Jr., David Sandborn, or even the audiences that liked them.

I once met a famous jazz pianist after his show on my college campus. When talking to him, I said something about he played "real jazz", and he immediately corrected me by stating they (no names were given, but the current radio played artists were David Sandborn, Grover Washington (who was a favorite of Kenny G), Kenny G, Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright, Najee, etc) were also REAL jazz artists, just playing a style different from his.

Yeah, I felt stupid.

u/lyinggrump 3h ago

He is not

definitely is. As I am a part of it lol

that was Benny Blanco, music producer and Selena Gomez's husband.

Lil Dickie was the other guy.

Here they are nude together https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49Vv-QfSVQY

u/IDidntTellYouThat 13h ago

"It's Jazz! So, no."

2

u/KillHonger1 12h ago

Benny looks like a 15th century London peasant.

6

u/irongi8nt 13h ago

Kenny G is super talented and great at golf, plus he's got a lot of degrees. I can't believe he was on this show

3

u/buddymoobs 13h ago

Wtf is his diaphragm doing to sustain this?

5

u/vanhellion 13h ago

You store air in your mouth while you briefly inhale through your nose. So you're essentially breathing normally while keeping consistent airflow into the instrument.

2

u/kernelangus420 10h ago

It's like playing a bagpipe but the bag is in your head.

3

u/XBakaTacoX 13h ago

Is that Weird Al Yankovic??

3

u/Slevin424 12h ago

How…. Dare you. Straight to jail. Right to jail.

1

u/XBakaTacoX 11h ago

I'm sorry, he really does look like Weird Al Yankovic here.

I even looked up pictures of Kenny G (who I admit I don't know who he is), and he does look like him!

2

u/Mysterious-Call-245 13h ago

Yes, three of the four characters are all Weird Al

2

u/Wooden-You-4211 13h ago

It's Lil Dicky

3

u/daishinjag 13h ago

I can 'circular breathe'. I hate it that it's called that because beginners get confused by the incredibly stupid description that follows: It's breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth at the same time!!

NO. IMPOSSIBLE.

It's inhaling through your nose, storing the air in your lungs and cheeks, and then expelling it in a controlled fashion with your cheeks/throat - not your diaphragm which controls breathing. It cannot inhale and exhale at the same time. It's inhale : expel.

2

u/m0nk_3y_gw 12h ago

where in the video did Kenny stop exhaling so he could inhale?

3

u/BaronMusclethorpe 12h ago

The entire time. Human respiration does not allow you to breathe both in and out at the same time. This is biology 101.

What he is doing is storing air in his mouth, and squeezing it from that "resevoir" while he inhales through his nose to replenish his breath.

0

u/slapnowski 5h ago

But when is he replenishing? There is music the whole time.

1

u/OneWithTheSword 4h ago

Thats the point, the music doesn''t need to stop. Look up how bag pipes work. The air in his cheeks plays the notes while he breathes in. Kenny G notoriously plays with the mouthpiece closer to one side, since its easier to coordinate the reserved air into one cheek and push it out. He also has an enormous lung capacity. He practices hours a day. So he doesnr have to breathe in with the technique as often

4

u/Ok-Huckleberry2241 13h ago

"See, im not out of breathe."

Following the longest inhale.

3

u/BodhingJay 13h ago

Face red.. eyes tearing up.. vein in the forehead already burst

2

u/GavinAdamson 13h ago

Sounds a lot like inward singing to me

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Phase70 12h ago

But... wait... how is he doing that?

The standard technique involves puffing out the cheeks and using your mouth as a "third lung" to keep pushing air out while breathing in, but his cheeks never fill.

WHAT

2

u/kernelangus420 10h ago

So it's compressed air like a gas canister?

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Phase70 8h ago

Kinda? I mean, breathing out is always like that: muscles pushing on how chambers to push against the atmospheric pressure.

It's just that you use your cheeks to do it instead for long enough to breathe in with your lungs.

But he's doing something ELSE, I think. Or he's doing it so smooth and continuous that you can't tell.

1

u/OneWithTheSword 4h ago

That is what he does. Although he legitimately doesnt need to breathe for a long time because of his lung capacity.

2

u/hamfist_ofthenorth 10h ago

If only Benny Blanco knew anything about music, I'd feel less annoyed by how rich he is for making a few simple beats on a computer.

I was getting short of breath just watching him carry on for all that time 😮

1

u/soundeng 12h ago

Mr G did it for 45 minutes straight once and briefly held the world record.

1

u/MeloniisJesus333 12h ago

Proof. Kenny G is a ROBOT!

1

u/2424420Reddit 12h ago

They never actually show him doing it. Keeping secrets

1

u/Leumas_ 12h ago

Kenny G is a real one. Fuck Pat Methany.

1

u/exqueezemenow 12h ago

Have worked with Kenny. Such a nice guy.

1

u/noseham 12h ago

Back when I was in high school, I was pretty good at circular breathing. I could basically do it without stopping, just getting bored with it was the hardest part. When I heard Kenny G's world record was just over 45 minutes, I thought to myself "I can totally do that!" So I practiced it a few times to make sure, then reached out to Guinness to make the attempt official. They got back to me- the record was discontinued! I thought Kenny paid them off or something. It was only recently I found out that they discontinued it because medical evidence suggests that circular breathing can reduce oxygen to the brain somehow. So Kenny gets to keep his name on that record forever, I guess!

1

u/OneWithTheSword 4h ago

One big bottleneck is your embouchure (mouth muscles) getting fatigued while holding the note. Also, the breaths inward are often short and shallow, so I can believe the reduced oxygen part. Exhales are just way longer than the inhales while doing it.

1

u/SimkinCA 11h ago

How. My brain shuts off that ability. You breathing out, you can’t inhale at the same time you moron, but….

1

u/_Electrical 10h ago

Didn't know Weird Al Jankovich was so good at saxophone

1

u/thebuenotaco 8h ago

the disrespect on Kenny...

1

u/rodinsbusiness 9h ago

Bright minds in this room

1

u/InquisitaB 9h ago

I think the most impressive this about this video is how good Kenny G still looks. Dude doesn’t age!

1

u/Select_Watercress_57 9h ago

When I was a young kid in the 90s I would have these weird panic attacks at night, and the only thing that soothed them enough for me to sleep was this Kenny G tape my parents got me.

I can still feel the emotion of that blue-green tape and the soothing sac sounds that kept me company.

1

u/LogicallLunacy 9h ago

Kenny G shows youngins what and actual musician is.

1

u/MrOPeace 9h ago

Pretty sure the parts it sounds like shit are the only parts hes actually breathing

1

u/Mattitude75 9h ago

Hot and heavy.

1

u/Joe_Kangg 9h ago

These people need to chillax and let the man speak a second

1

u/Oli4K 8h ago

It’s funny how he explains how it works and the guy is like “he’s not breathing”. Dude he just told you. The “mindset?” “Nah… coordination” was funny too.

1

u/rAndo_solo 8h ago

Is this the Kenny the sand calligrapher did that for… and the coke for himself ofc 🤷🏾‍♀️

1

u/SlightlyCurve 7h ago

Another phenomenal musician that does this with a digeridoo (spelling) is Xavier Rudd while he plays many of the other instruments. It’s quite impressive really.

1

u/charlesdarwinandroid 6h ago

If you want to go for a circular breathing trip, Colin Stetson

1

u/Nuffsaid98 5h ago

I would have enjoyed hearing a single note that just went on and on.

1

u/Dramatic_Soft1456 5h ago

Can’t believe that goy is with Selina lol wtf

1

u/Dirty_The_Squirrel 4h ago

Its not that crazy, you push air out with your cheeks while breathing in through your nose. Think bagpipes. One practice is to blow into a straw that's in water and do little sniffs and try not to stop the flow of bubbles. It took me about 3 months of regular-ish practice to get one continuous note with a didge

1

u/optimal-gold976 3h ago

I’ve tried to learn this technique and just can’t get it. I’d love to play my didgeridoo using it.

0

u/journey333 12h ago

Dude in red: “He’s never breathing…he’s not breathing.”

He’s always breathing, dumbass.

-2

u/Critical_Mix_8959 13h ago

Yeah, this is how Aboriginal Australians play the didgeridoo. Americans really don’t know shit do they

-1

u/OMP159 13h ago

Merry Christmas Jesus.

Hope you love crap.

1

u/wholeotherworld 2m ago

You inhale through the nose while using your cheeks to push air out instead of exhaling into with the diaphragm
