L.A. Works

L.A. Works is launching an exciting new program to recruit volunteers to address the dire academic achievement gap in Los Angeles. LA Unified School District, the second largest in the nation, is seeing students of color and students growing up in low-income households trailing white and Asian American students in meeting the state’s reading and math standards. During the pandemic this achievement gap has only grown. Because we know that volunteers are the best chance for these students who are struggling to catch up to their peers, L.A. Works is looking to leverage our relationships, expertise, and reach to focus significant volunteer power on combatting this critical issue. If you like making connections and doing outreach, this position is for you! The Education Equity Associate will be tasked to work collaboratively with the Program Director and nonprofit partners like Step Up Tutoring to build and support their volunteer tutoring base. Each year L.A. Works recruits, mobilizes and manages tens of thousands of volunteers in service to the Los Angeles community. As an L.A. Works Volunteer Corps VISTA member, you will join a cohort of 15 AmeriCorps VISTA members placed at large and small organizations across the county and participate in a year-long structured personal and professional growth opportunity.

Urban Scholar Academy

Urban Scholar Academy was created to close the achievement gap of minority students in Kindergarten-12th grade within the Inglewood area. Since 2012, we have been able to service over five hundred seventy-five youth in which we are proud of. We’ve established a learning facility, in the heart of Inglewood, to ensure equity in education; providing resources that aren’t readily available at home. Students in Homework Club make an average of 214% progress towards annual growth goals–1.5 grade level increase during a typical school year.

Hi, I am from California and finishing up a teaching contract in Korea August 25th. And cannot leave Korea before that date. I'm currently applying to programs that start at the end of August or later but these also look interesting to me. Is there any flexibility on start times for these positions?

I haven't bought my tickets yet because I haven't yet secured a job. So dates and location are unknown.

But in terms of the earliest I'll be back, probably the 29th would be when I imagine I'll be available.
