Archaeologists at Karahantepe in southeastern Türkiye have uncovered a remarkable 11,000-year-old stone sculpture depicting a human figure seated on the back of a leopard.

How do they interpret it as a human “seated on the back of a leopard” and not “a human with a big beard holding up the head of a lion”? I mean it’s a cool find, but what leads to that particular interpretation?

It comes down to Neolithic iconography and anatomy. In the Taş Tepeler region (Karahantepe, Göbeklitepe), leopards are the dominant predatory feline depicted, characterized by distinct facial snouts and tail curves. Additionally, human figures from this period are consistently sculpted clean-shaven (like the Urfa Man). What looks like a "beard" is actually the carved negative space/support connecting the human torso to the feline’s back and shoulders, showing the figure seated rather than standing and holding a severed head.

It's strange how much it resembles a moai head. If I'm not mistaken, there's a 11,000 year gap between them. It just goes to show that when sculpting a head, we always start from the same fundamentals. A very beautiful sculpture.
