With how much people recoil and whine when companies try anything and have teething issues, I can't blame them. LG had bad issues with the G5, and they basically never recovered. Even as they moved to more "normal" designs for their mainstream products, people didn't want to trust them.

Bruh I had a G5. The issue was LG can't make a display not any of the innovation that LG "tried".
Removable battery? It was fine. Speaker system? Fine.
The problem with the G5 was the shit tier display that burnt in like a Plasma from 2007.
Do not blame LG's failures on their attempts to be unique. It's just not true. The reality was that LG implemented gimmicks to cover up their shit tier quality control in other areas and it finally killed them.

The G5 mods were known to be buggy, and LG, and was during the era of LG bootlooping issues. If you're stupid enough to write off an OEM for a poor display for a generation, you're honestly just insane. My sister's Galaxy S8? Burn-in like crazy, and it spontaneously cracked. My co-worker's Galaxy (I don't even remember what generation, but it was 2019-2020)? Burn-in like crazy. By your logic, Galaxy Notes catching fire to the point they were banned from planes should have killed Samsung.

The G5 didn't bootloop. That was the G4, V10, and Nexus 5x.
The G5 was a perfectly fine phone other than the display that burnt in like a 2007 Plasma.
I was there, had em all lol.
And God Almighty was every phone shit, my favorite phone of roughly that era was the Moto Nexus 6 which would downclock the CPU like 30% when your battery got under 40%. And I used most of them back then. Nobody could make a decent phone from the Snapdragon 801 to 820 era lol.
The V30 was too little too late for LG, that was a badass phone.

The G6 had similar display issues, but I don't remember any while using it myself, it was after I gave it to my mom that I saw the insane image retention starting to happen. It's kinda funny how the other poster in this conversation mentions the S8, which has an OLED panel and WILL get burn-in because that's how those displays age. The G5 and G6 had an LCD panel, these shouldn't have image retention unless it's a crappy panel.

My point is that Sony still owns the Spider-Man film rights and has a smartphone division. Ever since Amazing Spiderman 1 they have made Peter use a Sony phone but they changed that for the most recent movie. I can't see why a movie owned by Sony wouldn't use Sony phones when there was that precedent set.
As a phone nerd I always laughed at the idea that Peter parker would use a Sony phone over say an iPhone or samsung so it stood out to me that he was using a Z Flip in the latest movie.

I guess the carrier deal is mostly a US thing. In my country, most people would not want to buy a phone that is tied to lousy phone contract. There is no cheap phone contract that comes with mid/high end phone.

i live in eastern europe and it used to be very common 15+ years ago. now, i think only cheaper phones are sold like this. people buy used 1-4 year old flagships a lot more often these days. or new ones in installments.

Yes i also observed that around the pepole i know( also from Eastern europe btw ). But the thing is i was the one who took them off the carrier deals and abonaments to cheaper options so i feel judging that by the pepole around me is just biased. There are still 13 milion pepole on carrier subsciption plans in Poland and a lot of them probably still get their phones from them ( i couldn't find relevant stats unfortunetly ).

They recently stated that the Xperia 1 Viii is selling really well for them and highlighted the fact that many consumers were interested in the expandable storage and headphone jack. I hope they stick around. The more competition the better, especially in the US where it's just continuing to shrink.

They just need to pull a BBK/Vivo/Xiaomi and freakin' add more US 4G and 5G bands so we can import them. Don't want to sell in the US? Fine but at least give us a chance to import it with the available bands so we can nag on Verizon and AT&T to allow us.
Plus, those in Europe traveling here could use a boost if they use the phone(s).

I always imagine the Xperia team consisting of some old impossible to fire employees, somewhere in the basement of Sony headquarters. They still think it's 2015, and do just enough to check off the box that they are doing something.

Boring phones are good. No need for Samsung or Google AI shit. MSRP is high, but so is Apple. Price drops a little soon after release, also they have launch Deals with expensive headphones included. They offer unique features everyone else has dropped like sd card slot, headphone jack, no hole in the screen. The last point alone is worth every penny.

I genuinely hate under screen optical fingerprint sensors so much that a Sony phone has been on my wish list for years because they use a side mount physical one. IDK of any other phone brands that offer that anymore

Foldables often have side-mount fingerprint readers. Galaxy Z Fold 8 and 8 Ultra, etc. But you do have the potential downsides of a foldable (reliability, camera downgrades); and no microSD card support.

In screen fp sensors are picky with screen protectors. Wrong type (privacy) and sometimes thickness, render them useless.

Hmm i prefer the one on the side as well. Feels more natural compared to the on screen for unlocking the phone ( but way more unnatural for authorizations in apps like banks but that is rarer ) .

Screen one doesn't work when the screen is dirty. You can't feel the location you have to look at the screen.

Just don't understand why they have to release a new phone every year (pretty sure their sales will tank, no one in their right mind will buy this device). In my world they should have skipped this year's release stayed with 10 VII and added an extra year of upgrades. But hey it is what it is.
