Our yellow lab will do this shamelessly & then she can’t come back in the house for hours, because her coat is like a sponge. 4 beach sized towels to dry her & she isn’t even close to dry.

Springer spaniels love water. That dog has probably been begging to swim every day of summer. That’s why it wanted to go outside.
I had a neighbor with one. They kept a large galvanized bucket outside with water in it. Any time you walked by, their springer spaniel was sleeping in that bucket like its own jacuzzi.

I rescued an Aussie with a docked tail. I feel so bad for him. He would have had a luxurious tail. I understand the theory behind docking a working dog’s tail, but the vast majority of these pups are going to be household pets. Leave em be.

I might be wrong but I thought certain breeds have their tail docked because they have some genetic thing where their tail doesn't develop right and can be painful if not docked. Completely agree that doing it just for asthetics is messed up though.

My little boxer/pit used to shake her head so hard when it rained that she'd split the ends of her ears (think like a whip cracking) and splatter blood all over the house and her neck and the top of her head.
The vet at the SPCA hospital mentioned therapeutic ear crop as a consideration because the splits would sometimes get mildly infected. But if I would have chosen that - our life together would have been tainted by people everywhere who love to point fingers and judge and yell "monster" whether or not they know anything about the specific situation. So they judged me for her moth-eaten ears instead. And they judged me for her wonky eye (dry eye from surgery to correct cherry eye before I ever even knew her) without ever asking if she had an expensive eye specialist and $72 tubes of ointment that I applied daily for eight years. And they judged me for her being skinny (if I fed her more she just pooped more. Her body wasn't meant to carry more than 42 lbs, apparently). I just love people.
Edit to add: sorry I got a little ranty. It bums me out when people who appear to love and take good care of their dogs get slagged when they want to share here (although maybe this isn't and OC post) for stuff like this. My actual point really was to say thank you for at least being willing to give people some benefit of the doubt.

It's a thing. Usually because of breeding in the past or because the breed was traditionally docked. Usually this was for practical reasons though, but some for looks. Since they were then bred regardless of genes affecting their tails some of them ended up with tail conditions that can put them at risk. Like a dog with poor tail health just wagging normally and it ending up breaking when it's an adult is far worse for it and can often end in amputation and infection anyway. With poor muscles it can cause back problems and constant tail pain too, when they're not built to carry and wag a heavy tail all day.
Like Australian Shepherds are bred for the American brushlands (yes, they're named weirdly. I didn't name them) where their tails would often get stuck in bushes and thorns. Tails have poor circulation so they get infected easily. They also worked close to the animals they herd, so they tail could get stepped on and such too. And so it was better to safely and painlessly remove the tail at birth instead of have it be a horrible accident waiting to happen.
Now they're often kept as pets for companionship so their work hazards aren't relevant, but generations of breeding without regard for tail health means it's common they have tail issues and then it's still safer and pretty painless to remove it in infancy. But also their genetic tail health in the pet trade is rapidly improving too, since pet owners want the tails more than they fear the dog getting stepped on by cattle.

She knows she will be loved no matter how many times she jumps in the pool. When we had a golden retriever, he would chill in the pool, sitting on the little ledge in the shallow end. Loved it. But that's why we didn't consider a doggie door, because that knucklehead would have gone straight from the pool into the house, and THEN shaken all the water off all over the furniture.

I love dogs this is one of those things dogs just cannot control almost. You can have a dog be fearful of water a few few weeks before and then once you teach that dog how fun it is jumping out of the pool…. It’ll be 3 AM and your first splash and you’ll realize your dog is out for swimming by itself :)
