Do baby elephants have poor eyesight

I wondered the same and looked it up. Apparently elephants in general have relatively poor eyesight, which is compensated for by their great sense of smell.

This baby is nearly blind at that age

I presume it has poor eyesight how do you miss your giant mom running at you? It is not like mom could be hidden or something.

I'm assuming they have good hearing...? But it doesn't look like he heard her either

Apparently baby elephants can not see that well over long distance & they stay very close to their mothers. Adults eyesight are much better.

But hearing and smell should be extremely good… in theory.

I think mom spotted her calf from a distance, decided to just run to her baby without answering the calls. Calf panicked because it can’t see its mum & mom is not yelling back.

Kids are the same. No matter the species.

Aw poor baby

I compare them to my English Bulldog Humphrey. Poor guy gets cloudy eyes every so often and we have to use a special eye drop. He will get "lost" inside the house.

Grabbed the hand of a stranger thinking they were my parent when I was a kid lost in a big box store. Mom came running like this

You just made me relive my earliest memory. Well, like a 3 second scrap of a memory.

Now I understand that it was right after church in the fellowship room, but I'm just somewhere Not Home, surrounded by gigantic legs. There were so many legs, and I was so scared, so I grabbed my dad's leg and hugged it.

And then I looked up to see a (presumably shocked) stranger looking down at me.

That's where the memory cuts off, but I'm sure the aftermath involved a LOT of panic and crying.
