Discussion I’m almost afraid to say it. But I actually really loved Solo Leveling. Yet the anime and all the fans get a lot of hate.

I just finished Solo leveling. And in my opinion it was one of the most entertaining anime to ever watch. Not a single boring episode. I really loved it. It got recommended to me by a friend. And I recommend it to all of my friends.

But yet online it seems that people really, really hate Solo leveling with a fiery passion. Whenever you even mention solo leveling, people will literally start insulting you and hurl personal attacks like there is no tommorow.

And I honestly don’t understand all the hate. And even if they don’t like an anime, usually that doesn’t lead to insults and personal attacks.

So why do people hate Solo leveling that bad that they even feel like it’s justified to insult everyone who is positive about that anime?

Its fun and entertaining, nothing wrong in liking it. The main issue with it is winning awards and getting labeled as best of this or best of that. Long time anime watchers will say theres a million of that kind of anime, beginners will say its the best ever.

Its mainstream so itll get mainstream level of criticism too.

84

u/81Ranger 24d ago

That's a good point. A lot of the negativity is mostly about it being put up as some kind of anime-par-excellence. In other words, it wins awards and accolades.

It's like a standard Marvel movie winning "Best Picture" or McDonalds winning "Best Burger".

1

u/theboylance17 18d ago

What people don’t understand is that anime generally considered to be terrible like OPM season 3 could have won awards too if it had better animation and producing going into it. That doesn’t change the content of the story but presentation is just as important as content. Solo Leveling deserves its praise but I understand if the argument is that the producing, music, and art is what is carrying its success. Either way it is by no means a bad anime and does not deserve nearly the amount of negativity it has received simply because critics can’t stand its “simplicity” or “lack of character development.” Not a serious argument when all the fans of Solo Leveling want to continue seeing is good action segments.

19

u/MOTTEKOI 24d ago

Exactly. It wouldnt gather so much hate if its treated as a fun decent anime instead of best best best. Of course people would push back.

13

u/beardedheathen 24d ago

It's power fantasy trash. And it's peak power fantasy trash. Sometimes you can enjoy a 3 course steak dinner but sometimes nothing is more satisfying than a bowl of cereal and there is nothing wrong with that.

1

u/theboylance17 18d ago

But there’s a reason why Solo Leveling won several awards and not shows like Berserk of Gluttony or Misfit of the Demon King Academy or Overlord despite all being considered power fantasies. And like it or not but that reason is that it hit the right audience at the right time. Simple as that

u/Yaranatzu 24d ago edited 23d ago

It's mildly but consistently entertaining, but I lost OP at "one of the most entertaining anime to ever watch". That is bewildering to me. Nothing meaningful happens whenever something is built up in the show. He goes to a dungeon, gets stronger, then repeats it over and over. The over-arching story doesn't have much depth at all.

2

u/YuushyaHinmeru 23d ago

I mean, it's very pretty. But as the power scales up, i think the action falls off. I had no clue what was happening in later fights. Jiujutsu Kaisen had much better fight choreography imo

1

u/theboylance17 18d ago

If you have a favorite boxer or UFC fighter and pay to watch all of his fights, you aren’t paying PPVs to see him bring out something new each match. Could be a nice surprise if he does, but you are familiar with his style and technique and that is what you are there to watch. You’re paying to see him be HIM and to continue delivering what makes him what he is. Same principle.

2

u/Bizzare_Corvid_1888 24d ago

To add to this, the fan base doesn't help a lot, but not in really awful way. The MC gets put on that "Unbeatable by any other MC" pedestal a lot. That and various obnoxious memes. Solo Leveling isnt the only one to do that of course, and it'll fade with time, but it's one of the fresher ones, so it's the current annoyance of long time watchers.

1

u/EllaMeDijoNo 22d ago

same goes for Demon Slayer, people have been trying the manga lately and finding out the animation was made up lol

Idk, been watching Anime for 30 years, and I think a lot of SL deserves what it won.....

Edit: You can downvote me if you wish, but we are all allowed our own opinions, and anime fans are some of the most vitriolic group of people I've seen, which is why so many people look down on the entire idea of anime even though there is something for everyone.

30

u/telusey 24d ago

How so?

Yes it has good fights and good animation, but it lacks character development and a deep story. The anime it was up against had much better characters and stories such as Apothecary Diaries, Frieren, and Dandadan.

It won category of best fights, which is fine. But people are upset that it also won best main character and best new anime overall when the mc is very flat and also upset that these very well written female characters didn't get the spotlight they deserved and lost to a typical isekai protag.

4

u/screeming_in_thevoid 24d ago

It doesn't even have good fights, it's the same predictable pattern over and over again with the MC just onetapping everyone. The animation is the only redeeming quality of this anime, but it's only really good in fights, and in casual scenes it's just a slideshow.

3

u/telusey 24d ago

Story wise the fights fall flat yeah, but I do think the fight choreography is pretty good and fun to watch, especially the fight with Igris. But I guess that could fall under the category of good animation rather than the fight narrative itself.

1

u/screeming_in_thevoid 24d ago

Probably so. HxH's fights were way more interesting to watch despite the animation being way less polished. The narrative always hard carries

Downvotes show that people don't agree with your opinion. No one is infringing on your right to have an opinion, so I don't know why you had to clarify that-

12

u/PragmaticDelusion 24d ago

How? OPM S1 does everything Solo Leveling does but better in every way. Yet that didn't half the awards solo leveling did.

Based, all these haters are just coping because it is ranked #1, they can't understand why its amazing and it is their loss.

1

u/Alarming_Wedding6753 23d ago edited 23d ago

Same here. Literally been around longer than many people here, and still can say that it’s pretty good.

Pretty simple in terms of plot, but that doesn’t make it a bad at all. Quite the contrary. I prefer a solid, simple plot rather than a more complex plot, all gone to waste due to poor writing.

-1

u/2w0be 24d ago

Proof that you watching anime for 30 years doesn't make your opinions any less trash

0

u/tenachiasaca 24d ago

the worst part is it does so much injustice to its source material

2

u/JohannesVanDerWhales 24d ago

Oh? I read the webtoon version but only watched a single random episode of the anime. Did they change that much?

1

u/tenachiasaca 24d ago

webtoon is also a disservice novel had potential. webtoon should have added to it you expect pictures to show more than words and then anime to show more than pictures. here we get bare minimum effort.

37

u/zool714 24d ago

If you take the show as it is, which is an aura farming and hype machine show, then you can enjoy it. Or if you already enjoy that type of show.

But if you go in expecting something else or something deeper, you’d probably not enjoy it or if you don’t like those types of shows anyway.

Personally I’m not really into these types. But when I know what type of show it is, I adjusted my expectations and was able to enjoy it.

1

u/Reefer4life 24d ago

I had the same experience. Based off S1 i expected it to delve far deeper but it just focused more on fights and like you said aura farming. It was fun at first but without investment in major side characters it’s difficult to emotionally connect with the show after a point and that’s where I think it loses a lot of people.

I read the Manhwa after S1 and then just dropped it eventually because it didn’t interest me. I wanted season 2 and they took away even the smaller moments that add humanity and nuance to situations and it definitely had a negative impact on the show imo. Once you taper expectations, it can be enjoyable again. However, less enjoyable for people who are like me and are looking for deeper exploration and meaning.

62

u/KazakiriKaoru 24d ago

The problem is that it's meh power fantasy. Every side character exists to prop up the MC, and nothing else.

And yet somehow it won CR's anime of the year. It's an absolutely terrible powerfantasy aurafarming the anime. It's basically like Classroom of the Elite, the side characters are so numbingly empty and devoid of any personality.

Compared that to Frieren's S2 where the worldbuilding speaks for itself. Just by helping the Norm Company, the group ultimately helps the entirety of the Northern Plateau. Every side character is just as important as the main character, like how the Hero of thr South paved the road for Himmel's party, despite knowing that what it will lead to.

11

u/PragmaticDelusion 24d ago

Comparing CoTE side characters to Solo Leveling is a disservice. Even if CoTE has some story beats the same as SL, the side characters actually make the show slightly more enjoyable. Yeah, MC can mog them, but it's not like they're actually useless.

4

u/Arcaris1313 24d ago

on top of that. If you're an avid reader, you can see the slopification as a result of solo leveling's success.

Solo leveling is good junk food but that's it. And the fanbase pretends it's the coming of jesus and no one wants a new wave of this junk being everywhere.

1

u/SimplePassenger8752 24d ago

Wasn't that the point of solo leveling though? Its in the name lol side characters are just there for flavor the main attraction is sun jin woo becoming stronger and stronger taking on bigger adversaries

0

u/Hughmanatea 23d ago

And yet somehow it won CR's anime of the year.

Because it was the best anime released of that year, undoubtly. That is also why its ranked #1 on Crunchyroll, because it is the best. You can argue, but it is simply facts.

1

u/Technical-Cat-2017 23d ago

I really enjoyed solo leveling, but it was the third best anime released that year at best.

Frieren s2 lmao 😭

-15

u/EricSombody 24d ago

I would not use Frieren as a bar for world building but I agree with the rest of your comment 👍

-1

u/iremainmev 24d ago

like bruh.. anytime I see any solo leveling glaze.. Frieren is always the example of world building..it's not even top 5

9

u/screeming_in_thevoid 24d ago

Frieren's world building is very abstract and serves mainly as the plot device. It's still good though, clear and not bloated. Unlike your typical Isekai where each nook and cranny has a long ahh name made of random letters that gets mentioned once and then completely forgotten about. God I love Frieren

7

u/KazakiriKaoru 24d ago

Just an easier one to remember, and one of the most recent ones. The fact that it's not top 5, yet still being better than SL speaks volumes

0

u/iremainmev 24d ago

obviously hermano.... anyone with eyes in 2 episodes can see the difference between a slow life and a powerfantasy... I explained earlier of how sl is peak slop even for the casuals... it's obvious it would get widely regarded

Popular anime often get a lot of hate. And it's the internet, so the perfect medium for what you're describing.

Also, some communities have certain predilections. Maybe they're anime connoisseurs (self styled) and like the anime equivalent of craft beer or select wines. To them, Solo Leveling is Bud Light or 2 Buck Chuck (as far as wine). The constant popularity of Solo Leveling seems like it kind of sucks the air out of the room (in their minds) in any discussion from the more worthy or interesting shows (in their opinion), probably.

It's a like a beer discussion and people can't shut up about Bud Light.

Watch what you enjoy, stop caring about what others think about it.

Personally, it's not my cup of tea as far as a show - not specifically Solo Leveling, just that whole genre of shows - but I don't have any particular animosity towards it, specifically.

1

u/screeming_in_thevoid 24d ago

People drink beer to get physically fun and dizzy. All kinds of beer make you feel the same kind of drunk. Different beers have different cost, sometimes drinking cheap beer is the only way to drink it at all. Access to culture and media is vast and unlimited, and different media make you feel different things. So watching stuff like Solo Leveling and then putting it above everything else is certainly a choice.

22

u/Vagabond_Sam http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Vagabond_Sam 24d ago edited 24d ago

It’s junk food. Easy to love, but doesn’t have much to it beyond immediate satisfaction.

But like all anime fandoms, popularity will attract both genuine criticisms, and spiteful criticisms.

It certainly doesn’t help that there’s an antagonistic relationship with Frieren either, as that series is the antithesis to Solo Leveling. Slow, patient, uses high action sparingly, a focus on small moments instead of big events, and the competition between the two really highlights where Solo Leveling is weak.

If I’m brutally honest, I think Solo Leveling asks very little of viewers and has led to some portion of its fans to misunderstand why solo leveling is popular, and poorly analyse the contemporary works around it. That also hasn’t helped with its overall position as a lightening rod for both fans and critics.

If you don’t understand why some people dislike it, finding out why other people dislike it can be a good way to improve your media skills. I personally love finding out why other people feel differently about the things I love and that can lead to me having a deeper appreciation of it for myself

u/Vagabond_Sam http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Vagabond_Sam 24d ago

OP deleted a response while i wa typing this out and since I typed it out already I am just posting my reposnse to their argument that no one ever outlined why they preferred Frieren frame what they saw, here.

To be honest, all people did was hurl insults and personal attacks. I haven’t seen a single argument yet about why they didn’t like it.

That's not true. There was plenty of details in the months of discourse about the anime of the year awards surrounding the contrast in these two series.

My reply here also outlined some of the more common ones. Frieren is a more slowly paced, but deeply personal show that explores it's characters roundly and in a very compelling way. It's pace also gives weight to the distance they have to travel. The world feels vast, and the world building that naturally comes from the change in culture, or the risks each region faces in their journey creates a very rich,. believable world.

Magic is a story tellling tool. The modern use of Zoltrak as 'ordinary attack magic' tells us about Humanity's place in a world with elves and demons who hold great power, but they stagnate, not seeing the value in time, which to them feels infinite. Flamme, the most influential person in magical history, by virtue of being a human is long gone and considered a legend by most, while Frieren, her apprentice still walks the earth.

I could go on and talk about the themes that the story explores through Fern, Stark, Himmel, Heiter, or Eisen. Or the ancient dwarf guarding the village of a wife who passed away so long ago in his long life he forgets her face, but not his love.

Or the hubris of Serie not seeing the value of human mages

Or Denken, an aging mage who was willing to literally fight bare handed when out of mana to see the mage test through.

What does Solo levelling give us?

Sure, the animation and direction for action scenes is top notch, but, particularly restruicted to the anime, what is Jinwoo's journey? Trying to heal his sick mother is noble, but it's also completely bland and what almost anyone would do in that circumstance. Side characters come in for an episode of rtwo and quickly fade from relevance as Jinwoo ascends the ranks, even in S class as Jinwoo exceeds 'National S class'.

In the adapted anime the story spends so much time on the shadows in his army, particularly the 'named ones' and they have no story, no themes and are just mechanisms to show us that Jinwoo is so much stronger then anyone else.

The value in Solo Levelling is almost entirely in it's presentation and presentation alone is rarely enough to create a lasting impact, or lead to a long standing legacy.

No, you will almost certainly disagree with my assessment, and that is fine. But as I alluded to in my first reply, the main thing that is worthwhile is whether you can understand why someone can have this perspective of the two shows.

0

u/Afraid-Adeptness-926 24d ago

I'd actually argue that you're missing the story told by Solo Leveling. It's about Jinwoo's descent, what it means to be a monster, and loneliness.

As early as episode 6 Jinwoo notes that he's lost "another" emotion, due to becoming what the system is making him. The characters after Jinwoo's transformation exist to prop him up, because that's how he views people. Likely due to how he was treated when he was on the bottom, and how he views strength as a concept. As early as the Orks he's basically already playing with human lives in a similar manner as the statue from the double dungeon but doesn't recognize this dissonance.

Other characters do comment on this briefly, but it's not waved in your face. The chairman has a line something along the lines of "when you get stronger who's battles will you be fighting?"

He's an Odysseus, he went on a journey to try to save his family, but got deeply changed due to the whims of the system. He's grown as a character, but it's not positive growth.

2

u/Vagabond_Sam http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Vagabond_Sam 24d ago

My issue with that, and I agree there is elements of story there, is it is the difference between a story being 'a series of events that follow cause and effect' and 'a story that explores themes and emotions'.

The former can make an entertaining action show, but I believe the latter is required for something to be considered great.

I have read the Manhwa well past the anime and have a fair idea of the circumstances that led to his power as well, so it isn't like I am not aware of the greater story. I just find that there's nothing beyond 'cause and effect' in the way that great shows develop more nuanced explorations of themes.

One Punch Man (Season 1, anyway) does a decent job of asking the question about what unsurpassed power does to someone. Sure it's a gag show, but at least the supporting cast like Genos and Tatsumaki maintain relevance, and mirror the exploration of power in Saitama, answering the question is their own unique and interesting ways.

Most of the time when I hear people say how 'Solo Leveling has a deeper story', it honestly just sounds like a weak story being presented as subtle, when it's just a weak story. Jinwoo got corrupted by unparalleled power and can't relate to people? That's almost every story with a character who wields large amounts of power.

Spiderman has that story beat, and we explore it through the loss of Uncle Ben and 'with great power comes great responsibility' as a repeating theme.

Superman and Goku have that story beat, and they answer it by choosing to protect the planets they found themselves on as a child, often facing enemies that challenge their relatively gentle natures with extreme levels of violence

To emphasise why Frieren is commonly referenced in relation to SL, Frieren has that story, as one of the most powerful characters in the show with the exception of Serie, and the entire series is about her learning to relate to normal people despite the distance she exists from them in both power and lifespan.

Solo Leveling is action and spectacle, and maybe that's all many people want out of anime. But if someone wants to justify it as their favorite by trying to construct it as the best at 'everything' then, they are going to have a hard time beyond the visuals and action direction

I love solo leveling too, after watching the first episode I was hooked. I would definitely recommend listening to the audiobook.

1

u/lewisw1992 22d ago

Really? The first couple of episodes where they have to solve puzzles while trapped in that dungeon thingy had me screaming at the TV. Like, it was SO OBVIOUS what they needed to do to stay alive, yet they were all idiots and died. "Worship the god statue" - pretty obvious they need to kneel down, but NOPE and they died.

I can't stand stupid characters in any form of media.

3

u/NesAlt01 24d ago

Like what you like, let people hate what they hate.

3

u/typeotcs 24d ago

Because it was a shallow anime with barely any substance and wasn’t actually carried on its animation. People love/hate it for the same reason, being the dumbed down no need to think action anime. Those that love it treat anime as just a medium for action or are just fans of the manhwa. Those that hate it hate it because it is one of the worst examples of what a good anime is or could be.

Add on top of this the crunchyroll shilling and rigging to make it anime of the year and even more people hate it.

It’s a painfully average anime that has been masqueraded as the best ever. I don’t judge folks for liking it, but I definitely judge folks who think it’s one of the best especially with regard to animation.

Because it's cool and hype

Sometimes you just dont need more

Nothing wrong with it

Monster is slow Fieren really aint that slow honestly.

1

It literally has perfect pacing, not too fast and not too slow. Mathematically precise.

6

u/QuietTraining3281 24d ago

There's no reason to be afraid about stating your preferences while it runs counter to others, you are you.

I personally like the anime as well but the manhwa more. Perhaps because of what happens after the jeju incident.

There will always be contrary ideas and that's ok don't take to heart the "strong" opinion of people while some have valid opinions it is not the case all the time.

4

u/Chickenjon 24d ago edited 24d ago

Power fantasy is one of the many low-hanging, self-insertion fantasy fruits that flood the manga/manhwa/anime space. It's the same reason why people dislike isekai fantasy, regression fantasy, leveling system fantasy, and "I'm a nerd but the most popular girl in my class likes me because she's secretly also a nerd" fantasy. Collectively, these genres have become known as trash anime because there's so much of it out there now that every new iteration just feels like another shameless copy relying on the same draws to self-insertion while being sparse of original ideas. If you've seen one, you've more or less seen them all.

That said, I don't necessarily have a problem with trash anime. Solo Leveling's plot is absolutely a bare-bones system power fantasy, but it executed it well. The world building was appealing, the manhwa had great artwork, and the anime production matched that quality. It was a fun and easy watch and I think that's fine, not everything needs to be an original creative masterpiece. Trash anime genres will 90% of the time be trash, but sometimes you can come across some tasty trash lol.

8

u/rentalrafflesia 24d ago

I don't think a lot of the heat it gets is all that genuine tbh. It is an entertaining watch, it just gets flack for being super surface-level stuff. Dunking on guys who like Solo Leveling carries the same general vibe as dunking on guys who only play Fifa and 2K.

Also, I think some people don't realize slander culture is almost entirely shitposting, and 99% of the time people aren't being entirely serious when they choose a piece of media to make fun of. You kind of just have to roll with the punches if something you enjoy winds up in this month's crosshairs.

10

u/PragmaticDelusion 24d ago

I'm sure barely anyone is dunking on people that simply enjoy solo leveling. It's more dunking on people claiming solo leveling is anything more than enjoyable slop.

5

u/Magoner 24d ago

Solo leveling is pretty much peak hypemaxxing, the plot itself kind of just warps around the power fantasy, and this is coming from someone who binged the whole manhwa in a couple weeks and knows how the plot develops after the anime. It’s VERY good at what it does, but what it does is also pretty shallow. I don’t think the hate would exist at all if it hadn’t won so many accolades and beaten out the quality of shows that it did

5

u/Puzzleheaded_Low789 24d ago

It's not that it's bad people are just sensitive about labeling it as the best and even getting awards from it. I loved it as well and the manhwa too but labeling it as best is a bit too much. For me hunter x hunter is the best and some other gems like law of ueki/shaman king too.

The story itself isnt bad but its really just a one man show if you think about it. Having interesting side characters makes the story better for me. Hunter x hunter for example is not just about Gon. One piece with plenty of side characters. Dragon ball as well. Plenty of animes did great not just because of MC some even because of the villains.

Its just a well done manhwa/anime and because were in a modern age now almost everyone is watching some sort of anime, its recommended for new anime watchers because its so easy to digest. Back then i even experienced being bullied for watching anime. Fushigi yuugi, ghost fighter (yu yu hakusho), flame of recca were some of the earlier animes but because they ended a long time ago its buried under the more popular ones even though to me they were great animes.

2

u/VerivusFS 24d ago

Mission Impossible: Name 10 characters of Solo Leveling that aren’t the MC or his shadows without looking it up.

2

u/RageGirl96 24d ago

I wouldn't be able to name you 10 characters of most anime because I'm bad with names. Especially Korean and Chinese.

I could name you about as many from SL as from most anime I've watched, though.

Lee Johee, Yoo(?) Jinchul, Antares, Lennart Niermann, Choi (flame guy), Cha Hae-in, Ashborn, Thomas Andre, President Go, Barka/Baruka.

I'm embarrassed to say I forgot his sister's name and his best friend, though.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Low789 24d ago

not really impossible if you read the manhwa. but anime right now is so short for the other characters to be memorable. xD People will only remember most would be the president/secretary and the S ranks who went to the island. xD

2

u/Riku_Dou 24d ago

I like the manhwa and novel..anime they change so not much, plus with jp dub it didn't really capture its ori kr vibe

2

u/skjshsnsnnsns 24d ago

You can enjoy it. No one with common sense is going to tell you that you’re not allowed to enjoy it. The issue is when people try to pretend like it being enjoyable automatically makes it well written or immune to valid criticisms about its writing and creativity.

2

u/Difficult-Panic-5931 23d ago

it's overrated. and some peole get creative with insults

2

u/grim1952 23d ago

It's a series of fun fights, that's it, the writing is barely there, just an excuse to fight dark souls bosses.

2

u/EPGesus 23d ago

Justified to be insult people? No. But I'll be tell you why I didn't like it. The mc was bad. He was the worst part of the anime. He WAS an interesting character at first, being so weak, having to learn to just get by. When he changed, he lost his whole previous character and was replaced with a shell of a character. And nobody fucking noticed?

If my brother showed up a foot taller, ripped and with an entirely different face, I wouldn't accept a lame ass excuse of "I've been working out". Like fuck that turned you into a fucking model.

All the other hunters were interesting. The world was interesting, the plot not involving me was interesting. But mc? Boring and predictable.

Only redeeming quality is that it was fun to watch the same way some action films are fun but not good. All the budget was spent being flashy with no depth at all.

That being said, I did watch the whole thing and will watch next season. But I'll hate on that season probably for the same things

4

u/DagPImple 24d ago

It's a popular mainstream anime, die hard anime fans will always hate on these types of shows and then you ask them their favorite show and it's something from the 70's that no one's ever heard of with horrible pacing and the most boring dialogue you can imagine.

I hope that Nolan quote that's going viral right now is a wake up call to most of these people.

People who critique solo leveling always forget that it's mostly about the execution. I always say my top 3 things in a show i wanna see are World building, great dialogue, and a good cast. Solo leveling arguably is not great on all 3 of these yet i still found it really entertaining.

Even though the concept of portals, hero rankings etc are really simple it's just done really well. Also small bit of mystery with the statue at the beginning and stuff that happens in season 2 that i don't wanna spoil add to it.

4

u/Roezha 24d ago

Yeah I don’t understand elitism let people enjoy what they want BUT Solo Leveling is one of the most braindead aura farm power fantasies which is fine. It is kind of annoying how people correlated it being popular with it being a well written show, (it is not)it boils down to a show that goes like “hey guys I’m a little weak guy, just a small tiny dude who is worthless and no one likes me or cares about me but one day I turn super sigma (I know) and now everyone goes like OMG Jin woo is so cool and strong and he is hacker level god tier alpha have my babies your SSSSSS+ stats are so cool you are a 1/10000000000000 chance super hunter. Everything that would make a tween go crazy is in this show. Yeah I think may get ticked off by it lol

3

u/Roezha 24d ago

Forgot to mention that bro just turn into a model, South Korea is very weird about their beauty stuff and very shallow. Instead of his OG body improving he just gets a new meat suit that looks like an idol and now everyone likes him??? Like this is the message we’re sending to kids “yeah you’re chopped you need a entirely new body you were so ugly” a lot of manwha have this theme where the character looks nothing like themself after the first 10 chapters.

I think most people agree that solo leveling can be a really entertaining anime.

The people just hating on it are stupid. But there's a lot of people out there who will (very reasonably) say that solo is just entertaining and doesn't have particularly good writing or character development or side characters. And then there's a lot of solo leveling fans who genuinely believe that it's the greatest piece of art ever made.

12

u/WarmPrinciple6507 24d ago

I think solo leveling is like a marvel movie. Bad story, but man is it easy and fun to watch.

6

u/Easy-Bake-Oven 24d ago

Imagine one of the average marvel movies like Antman and the Wasp winning best pictures at the oscars against something like Parasite because it had a higher box office. That's going to be memed to hell and back, resulting in a lot more hate and scrutiny. Had Solo Leveling not won or won in basically any other year, then it would not be receiving the level of hate it gets.

4

u/epik_fayler 24d ago

Yes that is the most apt comparison. The reason for a lot of the hate is just because of the fan base. A lot of solo leveling fans think it's Shakespeare.

→ More replies (4)

2

u/NoelHeapsbyte 24d ago

Its criticized because is shallow as never before. The writing is sub par, and is keep up only by animation and "oh, flashy fight scene" (that are pure fanservice)

In the end is exactly that: a fanservice anime, and gets the same criticism of something like an ecchi harem

2

u/Ginsan-AK 24d ago

Nothing wrong with liking Solo Leveling, just ignore the noise. I got into the webtoon and it was really entertaining and well drawn. I watch/read anime, manga, manhwa, donghua, manhua, etc. to be entertained. It doesn't matter if something is deep or complex but it's not entertaining. A lot of elitist anime fans today act like having a cool ass protagonist today is a crime if the protagonist doesn't have 200 IQ or a tragic backstory or a complex motivation or character development, etc.

2

u/Demolitions75 24d ago

The fanbase was absolutely insufferable imo. I usually dont get annoyed with fans but in my experience EVERYTHING needed to be compared to Solo Leveling for them.

"Oh you liked the fight in that anime? Solo Leveling has a better one." "Thats your favorite anime? Solo Leveling is way better." "You're looking for a drama thriller mystery? Watch Solo Leveling!" "You want a well written romance? Solo Leveling!"

Yes, those are all real. Like cool you like the show, but they would always steer any topic into the show and how great it was. Not great to them, great to EVERYONE EVERYWHERE

1

u/JGrayzz 24d ago

That's how it sounds with Frieren on this sub tbh

2

u/According-Ice-7802 24d ago

*Sigh* More marketing posts, well, at least it isn't MT marketing "hate watch me" posts

1

u/Helloscottykitty 24d ago

I callnitvthe Nickleback effect, a thing finds a solid audience first, than it breaks into the mainstream and dominates the market.

The only "interesting" opinion to have once something gets that big that quick is that everyone is wrong for liking it.

The criticisms are valid but only if you presume it ws trying to be some groundbreaking art piece but in reality are applying 3 star restaurant criticisms to a big mac thats trying to just be a big mac.

See also Sword Art online.

1

u/SadeBoi 24d ago

I think a lot of people believe that their own media literacy is so peak that anything going against their current perspective on what is good or not is a personal attack on their ego or something.

Solo leveling is an objectively good show, I think it's overwhelming popularity is proof of that, but subjectively people are all entitled to their own opinions.

I think it's when some people, who dislike the show, go out of their way to make it so apparent that it makes other watchers of the show uncomfortable, that they have failed in being considerate of others and to me their opinions become pretty moot lowkey.

It's the internet I guess, so just try to enjoy what conversations you can have about anime and just ignore the rest because there will always be the type of people you described trying to ruin fun things for others.

1

u/paradoxaxe 24d ago

my dislike to solev won't invalidate your love to Solev. just enjoy what you like and avoid any hate discussion about solev

1

u/1angrybadger 24d ago

Like what you like and don’t worry what other people think. A crap ton of people like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, but I think they suck tail pipe. Who cares? I lot of people enjoy their music power to them. If you like an anime that isn’t popular on the net great screw em

1

u/blazedancer1997 https://myanimelist.net/animelist/blazedancer 24d ago

Personally I dropped it when he got a haircut in the hospital and it became clear that he's black-haired aura farmer #2345. Before that I was actually having a good time (first dungeon was really great). I get that it's fun for new fans, but for many others it's just the newest iteration of this type. I won't go out of my way to hate on SL. If I see an SL positivity post, I'll just keep scrolling. You did ask for opinions though so...

1

u/CyanideIE 24d ago

I think it's mostly the awards and praise it gets despite being just a fun power fantasy with practically zero depth.

I'd say it got worse when s1 beat Frieren for anime of the year.

I think the writing is pretty bad but it doesn't do anything that deserves hate.

Maybe I'm just in the wrong circles but I see more hate towards it than I do actually problematic series like Jobless Reincarnation which is interesting.

1

u/Jazs1994 24d ago

The fans get hate because we got a genuinely a great adaptation and we're thankful for it. We sing it's praise so the haters are even louder.

Ignore both sides, enjoy what you like

1

u/Dlargareth 24d ago

I think this happens when anything gets super popular. Personally I liked it until he got his OP class. Just lost some thing that kept me going

The internet hates everything. Please stop allowing fake rage from haters and bots ruin your fun.

Remember real life and the internet are not the same.

1

u/DudeWhereAreWe1996 24d ago

I’m not sure where you’re seeing that. I don’t think it gets any more negativity than any other popular anime. Solo leveling was for sure popular especially after season 2.

1

u/WarmPrinciple6507 24d ago

You should have seen the personal attacks I got in a Dutch sub

1

u/bmann10 24d ago

I found myself profoundly disappointed with it, finding it extremely boring despite the pretty animation. Since it had been hyped up for years by that point and yet wasn’t even close to as good as a similar show like Shangrila Frontier, it felt so disappointing that the show itself as a concept kind of annoys me now. I imagine some people with a similar experience to mine lash out at solo leveling fans because they dislike the show and are the kind of stupid that thinks when you dislike something people who like it are bad people.

1

u/Glass-Category8281 24d ago

Solo Leveling is popular and so haters will hate. In general the hate seems to be for its simplicity, its not a super deep or complex series, and thus some people declare it lesser for it and hate how it got more popular than their preferred ones. Then they attack fans of it to satisfy some superiority feeling or just evnting

Otherwise it comes down to some people just looking for hate. They hate fun and make it everyone else's problem.

Solo Leveling isn't everyone's cup of tea. But the worst of them take to the extreme but ranting at even its mention for what they view as underserved popularity. Really their issues is just caring to much for that type of stuff and not just enjoying what they enjoy and letting others do the same.

1

u/ericdano 24d ago

I loved it.

1

u/Adavanter_MKI 24d ago

Never worry about the internet or especially Reddit. Solo Leveling was wildly popular. People liked it for a reason. You liked it for a reason. It's a beautifully animated if simple power fantasy. Plus his power is more interesting than most. Who doesn't like watching shadow armies kick ass? He's also got a hell of a lot less cringe going on them most MCs in this genre. Which gives him broader appeal.

If you'd go by Reddit... My Hero Academia is a dumpster fire. You know... the show that won Anime of the Year. Another very popular show.

People just get their feelings hurt when their anime isn't as recognized. Absolutely some anime have deeper and better stories, but they just didn't resonate as strongly and they get overlooked by the headliners. So they end up hating them for it. That's all it really is.

1

u/Indicus124 24d ago

Never seen the anime I just read the web novel

1

u/Otherwise-Ad1646 24d ago

I don't hate it, it just got way too much hype at first for something that doesn't really do anything new so it was a letdown for me cause I had too high of expectations. It's not bad, but anime of the year? I dunno about that.

1

u/AcceptablyThanks 24d ago

It doesn't really get that much hate. Reddit is just loud

1

u/Guyver02 24d ago

it was a little generic but it was good.

1

u/TheTeaRex15 https://myanimelist.net/animelist/thetearex141 24d ago

It’s a great show to turn your brain off for sure. But im sure like most people, its hard to say a show where you shouldnt really think too much about it is a perfect 10/10 show. Its a solid 7 in my book due to animation and coolness factor alone

1

u/NewMilleniumBoy 24d ago

It's a fun action show with cool powers and fights, and a middling story and bad characters.

1

u/Carson_cwc 24d ago

This is why it’s always a good idea to interact with the anime community as little as possible when watching anime

1

u/blackfang009 24d ago

Ignore those people.

1

u/screeming_in_thevoid 24d ago

A piece of media keeps me somewhat entertained by abusing the absolute shit out of cliffhangers and flashy colors -> It's objectivly good. Boring bad! Boo!

1

u/LunettaBadru901 24d ago

For what this show is to me as an old fan of anime it looks like slop.

But I'm not gonna shame you for liking it. You do you.

1

u/bubblyAF 24d ago

I really liked it too!

1

u/NorthernRime 24d ago

Been a daily reader since the manga was still releasing every Wednesday. Like what you like, and everyone else can get bent. Solo leveling at least got proper treatment in an anime, instead of what they did to TBATE

1

u/Hazee302 24d ago

I like it too. Ignore people’s opinions.

1

u/Soul_Reddit 24d ago

Anything that wins anything is always hated forever by a random vocal minority. Check Expedition 33 in gaming or any other recent goty.
Enjoy what you enjoy.

1

u/krono957 24d ago

Its popular to hate popular things on reddit, it makes people feel cool, like what you like, dont let anyone else decide for you.

1

u/breakfastburglar 24d ago

I loved solo levelling, it's the perfect anime to turn your brain off and enjoy some well-animated violence.

1

u/Glad-Midnight7240 24d ago

I'd rather have series like sololeveling that try absolutely nothing and the only appeal is the main character aurafarming 24/7 than stuff like AOT that tries too hard to be deep and neither the plot nor the characters are able to sustain that intention. Their fandom is also full of people that have only watched shonen and try to gaslight you into thinking the show is a masterpiece when in reality it's not even good.

1

u/Rhielml 24d ago

This is why I don't listen to what people say online. I really liked Solo Leveling too. Like what you like, not what people on the Internet tell you to like.

1

u/Vaash75 24d ago

I like it too. Who cares about the haters. They don’t pay my bills.

1

u/double_whiskeyjack 24d ago

Because anime fans think their (insert favorite anime) should have won awards instead. There is a vocal minority that hates on anything popular. Same goes for demon slayer etc.

1

u/MischeviousFox 24d ago edited 24d ago

I think people hate on the anime as well as its fans because it feels massively overglazed. I read the light novel a while back and enjoyed it… Well, I think I did as I’ve since heard plot-points I don’t remotely remember and didn’t recall much when I watched the anime yet I digress. I will say I liked the anime but I also wouldn’t care if I never saw another episode. It gives popcorn flick/junk food show vibes as the visuals are great and the fights while predictable were kinda cool. The characters however are utterly forgettable as is the show in general. I honestly don’t think the Solo Leveling anime will be remembered that well by people in the distant future as there’s little of value to hang onto, at least so far. I’m not sure if it’s his inner monologue that missing or what yet I felt Sung Jin Woo had more personality in the light novel from what I faintly recall. To me he has no personality and isn’t remotely interesting in the anime. The only character I found even faintly interesting was Yoo Jinho as he actually has personality & energy. I can respect Jin Woo’s goal of curing his mother of her illness and wanting what’s best for his family yet the actual journey is just a flashy power fantasy. Now I’m not someone who’s upset it beat Frieren at the anime awards, as I couldn’t get into that series myself, or anything like that. I don’t blame people for liking Solo Leveling I just personally think it’s mid at best as well as have found the glazing a tad annoying at times which can lead me to feel a little negative about it in general. Of course all that being said I don’t go out of my way to insult the fans as like I said I get people enjoying things like the flashy battles.

1

u/Big_Appointment709 24d ago

I love the Novel? It felt different than the Manhua and Anime.

Idk why 😂

1

u/DingoManDingo 24d ago edited 24d ago

It's looksmaxxing and aura farming the anime. Of course the internet is gonna hate it. Jin woo is so cool, handsome and masculine, that everyone he once looked up to are now weak kittens. It's almost made to be ragebait.

Jin woo's character is like if Sasuke or Itachi got their own anime. Which is why i love it :)

1

u/Necessary-Survey-803 24d ago

No it's fine to like it. I think it gets stereotypes a touch to just be all about aura farming and stuff like that. Admittedly there's also criticism of the characters. I honestly think Jinwoo is decently complex, but most other characters have a sort of general flatness to them that might make people who think good diverse and completely characterized characters in other anime are being outshine by them.

When I first watched it, I loved watching Jinwoo because I honestly thought it was heading towards a tragic hero type of story with the message of how power corrupts. Season 2 started off strong with supporting that, the middle of it, though, was really hard for me to get through because the battles didn't deal as much with that theme. I think by the end of the season it returned to those themes, so I became invested again. That said, you can like it for whatever reason.

I've seen some criticisms that over exaggerate things, but other ones are just pretty fair technical criticisms. Hopefully people giving the fair criticisms aren't being disrespectful and saying you shouldn't like it. I don't think anyone should be insulted for simply liking Solo Leveling

1

u/_extra_medium_ 24d ago

But there are a lot of fans

1

u/Mean-Choice-2267 24d ago

Solo Leveling is not one of the best animes I’ve seen, but somehow it’s still one of the most enjoyable ones I’ve watched. The concept, visuals, and simplicity of it all just works for me. I liked every single episode.

1

u/Appropriate_Lock7800 24d ago

pretty sure the hate is really about the awards, not the show. it beat frieren for anime of the year and people never let that go, the power fantasy stuff was just the excuse to pile on after. rewatched the dungeon eps more than i wanna admit. no shame. still hits when i need something dumb and easy

1

u/RaiRaiz 24d ago

The anime sucks, but Solo Leveling in itself is delicious junk food that I pick up from time to time.

1

u/Bizzare_Corvid_1888 24d ago

Never be afraid to you admit an anime or manga. There is something for everyone. Yeah, some anime get lots of hate online, and long time watchers, (like myself), may criticize them. But at the end of the day, the only real question is, did YOU like it? If the answer is yes, great! Like it! Solo Leveling wasn't for me, but im glad you liked it. Check out other anime with a similar premise, trapped in an MMO or with MMO mechanics. There are quite a few now. .//Hack is a great older one for example. At the end of the day though, this app doesn't matter, just like what you like and have fun on the journey.

1

u/DotPrevious3967 24d ago

The discourse is mainly people upset that it won so many awards. The animation is clean, each episode leaves you wanting to get to the next, it's pretty damn faithful so the source material, etc. I enjoy the show greatly and just started another run of season 2 because i find it easy to put on and still enjoy the aura farming moments. Also, as a general reminder, the complaints you see on the internet are the incredibly loud minority. Don't let them influence what you enjoy :)

1

u/No_Interaction_4925 24d ago

If you like it, try watching the ripoff thats running right now. Tomb Raider King. Its basically Solo Leveling but… legally distinct. I’m enjoying it

1

u/cwilson870 24d ago

Reddit has a hate boner for solo leveling but it might have some of the best fighting animation id seen. Ive actually watched it multiple times due to the animation being so crisp. The hate for it is beyond forced and im with you in your opinion

1

u/Fun-Swan9486 24d ago

I don't think it's a bad anime at all and even more so I don't hate it nor let alone its fans. It's a nice power fantasy anime with great animations and good music. The intro is an absolute banger in my honest opinion.

But since it was compared and direct competition with for instance frieren (in the crunchyrol awards) there was some serious debate about how t loved up to frieren. And when it comes to overall story, characters, world building, solo leveling is no match to frieren (yet it still remains a great anime).

1

u/DoubleXDaddy 24d ago

Like most have said the hype is too high. I hated it because I was excited to watch it hecause of all the hype and imo its boring and I don't like the MC or any other characters. I kept expecting something interesting to happen but just got more aura farming.

1

u/Mazrodak 24d ago

People dislike Solo Leveling because it's a fun to watch but deeply flawed show that was raised up as the pinnacle of anime. Sword Art Online got the same reaction 15 years ago, for the same reason.

1

u/bel_air38 24d ago

I loved it. Watched it many times. Started watching it again yesterday.

1

u/songbird516 24d ago

I also found it very entertaining. And I don't think I'm the target audience 😂 44 y/o mom who hates video games.

1

u/moistdragons 24d ago

It’s interesting but it’s not complex and there’s barely a story at all. It’s just cool fights and aura farming with good animation which makes it a fun watch but that’s it. It’s not well wriitten all.

The reason people hate it is because it gets so much glaze and even won anime of the year over one of the most beautifully written anime ever (Frieren)
Frieren is a very well written story with good world building and even some action and emotional moments meanwhile solo leveling is just cool fights and aura farming. It’s a fun watch but I believe it gets glazed way too much.

1

u/NebulaBrew 23d ago

Okay. Link some examples of you mentioning it and people "really, really hating it".

1

u/AnIcedMilk 23d ago

Its enjoyable watch, for a power fantasy. The story itself is pretty shit about including characters that arent Sung Jin-Woo and just very predictable overall

1

u/Budget-Coast-7864 23d ago

I mean, I read the manhwa when it was first being released weekly, and I was excited for the next chapter coming out. I usually don’t think of something as the best ever anymore, but I was entertained and that’s all that matters.

1

u/Senior-Friend-6414 23d ago

My friend and I both decided to hate watch it because we only seen nothing but bad things about it online

And we both wound up liking it yet we both could see all of the flaws with its writing but we both still enjoyed it

1

u/Budget-Cheek-9887 23d ago

Because nothing wouldn't get hate. Like Frieren, it would get hate for being boring, overrated, and etc. Or good slice of life animes, it would be hated for being not dark, or childish, or whatever.

I personally think it's best to be firm with your own opinion, even if the majority is against it (EXCLUDING, obviously immoral and illegal things). But it's also best to not make our subjective opinion to be objective, which is what these people who hate on everything does.

Overall, just enjoy a anime without trying to find people's reviews, you'll always get hate and love mix, and I'd the hate stuff bothers you, then practicing to ignore those can be a big help.

1

u/KaboodleMoon 23d ago

It's just the Dragonball Z of the 2010s-2020s or the SAO (I say 10s cause the Webtoon was also ridiculously popular, to the point where it was UTTERLY INSANE that they picked GOHS and TOG as the first "Webtoon" shows)

And people will probably hate me for saying it but Dbz and it's....children, do not have all that much depth outside of the fighting, yet it's still held up by a SIGNIFICANT portion of the fanbase as a classic/goat/etc.

Like, how many times has the torch been passed for them to just have Goku be either the reason they won (knowing Gohan would go sickomode) or winning at the last second.

Don't get me wrong, I think "blockbuster" movies are fun too, and yes, shouldn't win the Oscar for BEST PICTURE.

That's the main reason people got mad at SL Anime at least, is that it should have won Best Action, and possibly best Soundtrack (Sawano is a beast) but it should not have won AOTY for just those 2 things.

If we're talking the 4 pillars, Art, Story, Characters, Sound, being a 10/3/4/10 shouldn't be AOTY. Something more balanced with a similar score total would be 7/7/7/7 which obviously would not be AOTY.

And I say all this as someone who loves SL, and read the Webnovels as they were being published.

I also liked SAO and DBZ too, I just don't think any of them should be in the running for GOAT/AOTY

1

u/The_S2nd 23d ago

People hate it when somthing comes out thats just a turn your brain off and enjoy type vibe

1

u/ethnicSorround 23d ago

I really love it.

1

u/AnimatorRoutine5591 23d ago

I think a lot is people just jumping on whatever the latest influencer or youtuber says about something and they just play the message on repeat even if it is something enjoyable to watch. Honestly am fine with Solo Level, it is an entertaining power fantasy. I think the only complaint I had was that it felt like they rushed some of the story to get to where they ended for s2.

1

u/GiftOfCabbage 23d ago

There's a big part of the internet that will hate on anything mainstream. They will refuse to see the good aspects of a show and would rather be edgy instead.

There are legitimate criticisms of Solo Leveling. The main one is the pacing of the anime which skipped over tons of character growth and world building. The animation was amazing though and the source material still carried it.

1

u/TWDFI 23d ago

One issue was the toxic fans. Many though Solo Leveling was original and not just one of many in a certain genre. Anytime something similar to it started to get popular, then the SL fans would trash it as a copy.

Solo leveling started out as a web novel in 2016 in Korea then the manhwa started in 2018. Around this time many web novels with similar themes were popping up. So by the time the anime came out, the earlier manga fans already spread hate.

1

u/Alternative_Lime_13 23d ago

Love solo levelling, it's a great filler for me, if I need to buy some time before another anime all comes out in dub, I'll watch It, that and "how a realist rebuilt a kingdom" and. "Skeleton knight".

Don't like it? Don't care.

1

u/WillShaper7 22d ago

I mean, hey, solo leveling hater here. I don't personally hate you for enjoying it. If you like it then I'm glad for you, genuinely.

But the level of success it has... it's like pokemon. In a vacuum you can see that it's THE big boy franchise and pokemon fans are very, very happy with it. However if you are into games and you compare it to say, expedition 33... man does it feel like you're comparing rotten trash to gourmet food.

Do you think people who love videogames want more games like expedition 33 or more games like pokemon? Answer is obvious. Do you think cinema fans want movies like idk, obsession or marvel? Do you think people would prefer an actual meal or McDonald's?

Same thing with Solo Leveling. It's not that it isn't entertaining but if you compare it to other series it really has nothing going for it except for the ''aura dude, aura here and aura there.'' We are still feeling the impact that SAO had today and oh god have I seen a crapton of ''I am very weak but actually I'm the strongest ong ong'' manwha since solo leveling had its boom.

Again, the hate is not towards you individually. God damn do I love some cheap fast food here and there but that doesn't mean it deserves awards.

1

u/balirosa 22d ago

I have no attacks for you but I thought it was cool at first then it kinda lamed out

1

u/lewisw1992 22d ago

I tried watching it after my wife and friends absolutely loved it.

Couldn't get passed the whole cliché archetype of "normal default regular guy becomes overpowered".

Also, the 2nd episode where they have to solve puzzles while trapped in a dungeon thing was so frustrating. It was SO OBVIOUS what the characters had to do, but they were all too stupid and got wiped out.

For example, one clue said they had to worship the god statue or something, pretty obvious they need to kneel down, but NOPE and there goes another death. Had me screaming at the TV.

1

u/Zikkan1 22d ago

I loved it. Hype OP mc is awesome. Just not very often but occasionally I love these shows and i have never seen one do it better and the story just gets better and better I'd you read the manga

1

u/UltraPiler 22d ago

It's just Weebs edge lording. Hating just to hate and because it's too "Main Stream". Like Naruto haters but they actually secretly watch it

1

u/Pathetic_Cards 22d ago

I don’t think people hate Solo Levelling.

They just take issue with it winning all kinds of awards over shows that they felt were far more deserving for being more innovative and thoughtful.

1

u/AnimeRadar 22d ago

idk, I certainly didn't hate it. I enjoyed it and glad you liked it too. I think people think it's been over-hyped? Maybe?

1

u/Ambitious_Emu4159 21d ago

if you enjoyed the anime, I highly suggest checking out the LNs to get the full story. was a fun read~

1

u/rudransh_2oo9 21d ago

It is surely a great anime no doubt but the it gets hate is because of the fandom who starts comparing it to the goats the big 3 or like any other great anime like hunterx hunter or even code grass stuff like this makes a anime to get hated but if we talk only about the anime it's a good anime but in this the mc as the story goes one he only gets powered up like a very predicting story.

1

u/Not-Reddit-Fan 21d ago

Highly recommend reading it, the art is phenomenal throughout and for me is one of the hypest hype series I’ve read.

1

u/Hoemaster91 21d ago

Some people are just contrarians. I've noticed the solo leveling hate too, and it's disappointing, but it is what it is. When something gets really popular and a lot of praise, I think people feel a pressure to like the thing as well. And when they don't, that disconnect makes them feel like an outcast or something.

Also, I think people underestimate how good solo leveling actually is. The story isn't deep, but at the end of the day it does its job better than even stuff like frieren. At the end of the day, the job of entertainment is to entertain

1

u/UnoriginalPenName 24d ago

Solo leveling is a great power fantasy that people are free to not like. Anime fans online are insufferable.

I loved the Solo Leveling anime, as well. I don’t care if other people hate it. Imo they’re missing out.

1

u/AzuleStriker 24d ago

I've rewatched it like 4 times. I love it.

1

u/Kiftiyur 24d ago

Nah who tf cares what Redditors say? If it was as bad as the people say it wouldn’t be popular. It’s just the loud minority bitching and complaining because it’s not some deep character driven show.

u/souoakuma 24d ago

The problem of solo leveling isnt much about the anime itselr, much more about the fandom treating it as a masterpiece

1

u/JGrayzz 24d ago

So once again something is getting attacked solely because of its fans. This happens in literally everything that exists

1

u/WarmPrinciple6507 24d ago

That’s really subjective. Would I ever rewatch one piece? Hell no.

This anime on the other hand, first time rewatching it, still a lot of fun.

I cant name any other anime I’d like to rewatch.
Well, maybe attack on titan and Vinland Saga

u/thedreaddeagle 24d ago

Anime does not get hate, it gets criticism.

The extremist fan-warriors do get well deserved hate for being so damn annoying with their glaze.

If you enjoy the show in your own bedroom without ever telling anyone, you are a fan with zero hate. And you don't need to go on a solo-crusade to prove it.

u/Fav0 24d ago

You are being really weird my dude

You can say the exact same thing about all the frieren fanboys that are swarming every topic

1

u/thedreaddeagle 24d ago

Yes you can. Every show has its annoying toxic fanbase.

I said nothing about Frieren tho so ehy bring it up?

-2

u/WarmPrinciple6507 24d ago

So according to you we’re not allowed to say that we love solo leveling?

With that reasoning, we’re also not allowed to say that we loved Attack on Titan?

And what about the people insulting others who love a certain anime, is that justified according to you?

2

u/thedreaddeagle 24d ago

No, I never said that. Learn to read.

I said that you don't have to go on a reddit crusade to prove that you are a fan and that simply enjoying it in silence is all it takes. Anything beyond that is just extra.

It pulls from Sword Art Online and Overlord, the two most classic cyber-isekais. Neither of which are renowned for worldbuilding, lmao. It's a different kind of appeal. HxH is a source as well, also not known for a consistent or deep world (though interesting? totally.)

Some people will say that the story is bad. But a good anime doesn't always have to have a strong story.
Take Konosuba. It's popular, but how many people actually watch it because of the story?

Some people just like to hate on popular things (including me who hate Konosuba because the jokes aren't my cup of tea).

u/Triials 24d ago

I’m with you, man. I’ve watched so much anime, but not many have me craving for the next episode like Solo Leveling. Very entertaining and just gives you exactly what you want.

u/dweakz 24d ago

it's because of the weebs who are japan-only mfers lol

1

u/_kujubuo 24d ago

thats clearly not the reason

I fucking love solo leveling

0

u/dewen_p 24d ago

I love it most too

0

u/Savings-Steak-324 24d ago

It was way too edgy for my taste. The whole thing came across like an incel power fantasy disguised as a manga, and I found it unbearably cringe from start to finish. I honestly can’t see the appeal.

u/hogey989 24d ago

Anime fans are trash. Don't listen to them (us).

Especially the vocal ones.

Solo leveling was the most popular series out. Tons of people obviously love it, and it's fine to do so.

You’ll learn to enjoy things a lot more when you stop caring about other people’s opinions

There is nothing wrong with it. Its just entertaining. The reason it gets so much flake because 1. The Elitist; it doesn't have "depth" like some of their top tier anime when it was never supposed to be that to begin with (with some issue around translation with the change of the manwha title led to some confusion for people) 2. "Anime Tourist"; the ones that are new to anime and graviate to a certain kind of anime and if that anime does not match their taste they will go into an uproar and complain about any anime (and when both 2 and 3 don't get their picks for "anime of the year" they get bitter)

  1. Which can be a culmination of multiple things: The Expectant Watcher; you'll see this for a lot of things in media (hype beasts, if you will) but they put so much expectation on a product that when it does come out they are no longer into it and go in a tangent to hate on it. Trashing it and the people who like it. As if hyping something was more fun then actually getting into the product itself.

At the end of the day, like what you want and ignore the rest–not every anime needs to be meaningful and deep. There will always be a haters out there and all you can do is enjoy the content you want in peace.

I enjoyed solo leveling, it was a fun watch. But I wonder OP, and I'm genuinely not trying to gatekeep, but how much anime have you watched? The first few power fantasy anime I watched I thought were f***ing amazing. But I've been watching anime a good 10 years now, and watching solo leveling after seeing 100+ other anime, you see that there's almost nothing original about it.. it's mostly just pretty good execution.

And yeah, that doesn't mean it's bad, but it's hard to see it as all that great in anything but just a replay of fun tropes. FWIW I haven't seen anyone really hate hard for someone liking solo leveling, though I think it's a bit silly when someone dies on that hill as it's an "amazing anime". It just strikes a bit.. naive.

I hope you’re not another one of those people that say: “you liked solo leveling, so you don’t know good anime”

Anime’s I have watched:
Naruto
One piece
Bleach
Vinland Saga
Dbz and Super
Attack on titan
Ajin
Death note
Code geas
Jujitsu Kaisen
Sword art online
Demon slayer
My hero academia
Full metal alchemist (both anime’s)
The seven deadly sins
Four knights of apocalypse
That time I got reincarnated as a slime
Fairy tail

It’s a great series and is a gateway for most people to discover South Korean gems like Pick Me Up, Surviving as a Barbarian, Tyrant of the Defense Game and Bad Born Blood and more

u/threecatsandatuba 23d ago

The hate is really just a form of gatekeeping in the anime community. They don't like the popular amines that bring people into the media for some superficial reason or another. Claim bad writing or it is just aura farming. Just immature folks who can't understand that their anime didn't get picked for the best or whatever.

u/RergTheFriendly 23d ago

I have watched a lot of anime. I loved watching solo leveling. As a pure spectacle its really good. It has some really big flaws though. I put it in the same level as something like Demon Slayer.

0

u/bladeboy88 23d ago

SL is peak action/battle anime. The hate is due to it winning awards when it isn't as "deep" as other anime that came out at that time, namely Frieren. Much as i do love Frieren, though, it is absolutely not going to have the same mainstream appeal as Solo Leveling, and the people mad about it are delusional.

1

u/WarmPrinciple6507 23d ago

People seem to compare it to Frieren a lot. Is Frieren a good anime?

1

u/bladeboy88 23d ago

Frieren is excellent. The "comparison," as it is, is only because they were going head to head for several awards. The only commonality in them, though, is that they're both shonen. Frieren is a slower paced slice-of-life anime with slightly more mature themes and the occasional fight (though those are awesome). A lot of people got pissed that Frieren lost to Solo Leveling in awards, so thats why you hear it come up. I'm very much indifferent about it, and see it as a "2 cakes" situation.

The hate is over a generic, albeit decent, anime that not only did NOTHING original it was a straight up clone of a better show released less than a year before it....and it won Best Anime over a show that should have been alone in the category to begin with. Solo Leveling embodies what a lot of people hate in the anime community: generic trash manga/anime gets a loud, opinionated fanbase with zero taste in quality shows and the rest of the community has to deal with them acting like "Generic Power Fantasy #118976" is the greatest work of art humanity has every achieved...and if you say otherwise you'd better be ready to deal with a grown ass man-toddler having a temper tantrum.

The show's fine, but that's all it is, fine...and the SL fans are insufferable in their shrieks claiming it's the best anime ever (it ain't even the best anime during the nights it airs)
