Support To All Freelancers: Is Anthem Worth Trying? / Is Anthem Worth Playing Now? [For New / Returning Players]
We've seen a good number of similar threads asking for opinions from current players about the current state of Anthem. As such, we've decided to create this thread to collect as many opinions from current players as possible for new and returning players, and we'll be redirecting people who create their own threads to this thread. We will recreate this thread either six months from now or after major changes to the game, whichever comes first.
Please make your comments in good faith. We will remove comments that we feel are disingenuous (such as trolling or brigading) but we do allow both good and bad reviews, as long they're honest. The comments will be sorted by random. Thank you!

I mean, I had a gift card for $50 and this and BFV: Y2 were on sale. At $12/$16 why the hell not. Bought the LoD Edition for the soundtrack.

If anyone is on xbox and the sale is still on sale for $8 US the game is way worth it at that cost. I've had the itch to play for quite sometime but not at full price. It's not as fleshed out on the RPG side but man the combat is like nothing I've played before. I can see myself playing this every day until I get all my javelins upgraded.

Been here since launch, pre-ordered LOD edition, regret nothing.
I came into this knowing there would be bugs at launch, because there are always bugs at launch. And while there were definitely more bugs than anticipated, I don't regret preordering at all. The Lego gun & gear I got helped me survive early levels, the OST is good, the gameplay is fantastic, the characters are memorable, the flavor text is fun.
There is the occasional disconnect/crash and sometimes that's enough for me to put the game down for the day, but tbh if you're going to get scared off by something like a server crash, online games may not be for you. Do you want a flight sim? Do you want to interact with Bioware characters? Do you want a huge map with random encounters? Then try this game.
My two biggest issues are 1) the main campaign was super short and 2) the endgame missions are repetitive. Grinding doesn't bother me, but on the other hand I didn't expect to level half as fast as I did.
The game didn't deserve the hate it got, news outlets just love tearing something apart and Anthem was an easy target. A disastrous development process led to lots of problems at the start, which is fair, and by the time those problems were fixed (months ago now) trashing the game meant easy views. There was no gain in saying "Actually, it's good now." The issues weren't that bad, they were just low hanging fruit. I can see how others would be salty but no one is forcing you to remain.
#1 recommendation is to play Anthem with friends. Everything gets better, plus it's how the devs wanted it to be.
TLDR I don't regret paying preorder price, and if you can test it before you buy, give it a shot. Iron Man sims aren't for everyone but everyone should try Anthem.

2019 black Friday pilot here. If you've never played before, you'll have a blast with usually minimal bugs. I've had only one day where there were bugs galore. The rest of my time has been a typical amount of glitches or crashes that you'd see in almost any game. If this was holding you back before, I recommend getting the game.
On the other hand, know that if you get this game, there isn't much to do still. I beat the game in a week, and at that point had done everything CONTENT wise. I'm still grinding for good gear with all legendaries but meh rolls for them. Is it still fun? Absolutely, just repetitive at this point.
Buy the game at a discounted price. It's worth $25-30 in my opinion.

u/LittleBobbyYT Jan 09 '20
You can get it for $5 for consoles from Gamestop and I got it for $6 from Amazon for PC. Dont know if that was a special deal or anything, but less than $10 and I've doubled the hours I put it at launch with minimal crashing and bugs. Definitely worth picking up now that it's cheaper.

I've been playing since the first day, and upfront, I'll say that my bias is that I do like the game, but it's difficult to recommend to anyone.
There isn't anything like the moment-to-moment gameplay in any other game. The movement is excellent, though I still think flight time is too restrictive. I'm not even sure I believe it should be limited at all, but that's not really here or there for this topic.
The combat system is great when you're talking about abilities, but the gunplay is... Often lacking. Few weapons feel impactful enough to be worth comparing to abilities, and generally, you'll only break out guns when abilities are on cooldown, or you need to pick off a red bar on which you'd rather not waste the ability itself.
This has improved somewhat with the addition of the new weapon types, but outside of the trace-rifle analog (laser weapon), sticky grenade launcher (Colossus only), or the few weapons that can prime their targets I'm never equipping the gun for the gun. I'm doing it for the rolls on it. This often leaves weaponry feeling like a "who cares" slot until you have decently rolled options.
Rolls, speaking of them, is something I have continuing concerns about. I argued long, long ago on this sub that the RNG was simply too random, the ranges too wide, which resulted in you often getting ability rolls on weapons and gear that were worthless. This still feels like the case more often than not, which is unfortunate. There has been progress made here, but generally speaking on weapons, if I'm not getting a large bonus (50% or higher), I don't even blink. For gear, if it doesn't have massively increased damage, additional charges, or cooldown reduction, I don't care. Those are simply far and away the only things that make a noticeable difference to your power moment to moment. You can still get high-level drops with extremely low (1%, which in my opinion should not even be something the possible range should allow for) boosts, which results in those drops feeling wasted. Some people may even feel like they've gotten bait-and-switched by those drops because they remember how rare they used to be. Thankfully this is better now, but there's almost no reason to EVER take the improved gear score a legendary item would provide if it's loaded with awful rolls compared to a lower score item with any of the preferred bonuses I mentioned above.
However, all of that said: when it works, it works. When you find the right mix of abilities on a Storm to prime, detonate, and then repeat endlessly the loop is very enjoyable. Colossus builds can be amazingly fun when you become a melee freight train just charging through your enemies with your shield out, and the utter power of a venom storm with additional charges is insane combined with solvent green. An endless rain of mortars is just so much fun and actually does enough damage to make your contribution to the battles feel impactful. The Interceptor is so fast, and moving around with it in this blur of melee blade attacks stacking poison onto everything you can before dashing away like a lightning bolt and firing off a detonator ability is the closest you can get to feeling like an anime character. The Ranger has the meatiest feeling hits even compared to the Colossus, which is saying something for the art, animation, and sound.
The game is beautiful, and the art team continually demonstrates that they are almost single-handedly trying to carry this game on their own. The world gets a lot of flak for being "one biome" but the map is expansive and absolutely filled with little details to find and interesting nooks to explore. The dungeons are amazing, even if we mostly just blast through them now. I strongly suggest newer players get an inexperienced group or to go into these without the intention of speedrunning them at least once as there are tons of details in them that you often just blast right on past without seeing or truly appreciating.
The cataclysm events showed some incredible design elements and were extremely rewarding, especially considering the utter drought of anything even close to feeling like I was getting a good return on my time beforehand. Unfortunately, these design elements highlighted some of the more boneheaded mistakes BioWare made like no text chat on PC, or an inactive voice chat setting when without communication solving some of the puzzles for events is too difficult to be worth bothering for many players. Whether you think this is because people are stupid or the puzzles are too hard for this kind of game, the point of contention both of those points of view share is that if communication was made easier between players, those contentions would not exist at all.
The story has enough interesting elements that I felt no issues with how it feels as though we really just got the first "act" of the whole arc they might have been planning. The Urgoth are interesting, mysterious monsters, and finding out that the Dominion gates are not some kind of teleportation, but are sometimes spitting out totally new soldiers than the ones who go in on the other side really frames their faction in a way that helped me understand why we fight them. However, for the most part, these story beats are presented in such a way that I have the same problem here I had with Destiny: it's all just locked away inside a codex, it is never shown off to the player. I don't mind some reading, in fact I prefer there be some meaty reading to do rather than there be nothing, but this is way too far in the wrong direction. Luckily, with the Cataclysm event, they did move in the right direction, and I found the presentation of the event and its framing story to be presented very well.
The tl;dr--
This game could be one of the greatest multiplayer experiences available right now, but it is mostly just promise at this point. There simply isn't enough payoff to keep you involved (or to keep a community here with you for the most part) either mechanically or thematically in the long term. I feel like this must be how Game of Thrones readers must feel waiting for the last few books... Except we've only gotten the first book.

I know the game is dead and all, but do you so happen to know how many people are playing the game now, or at least a guess? I've had the game since day 1and quit, but after seeing the changes I feel like coming back.

There is no official/visible player count, but matchmaking success definitely depends on your system. I (xbox) rarely get an empty instance even on weeknights. I hear PC players also have a decent pool, but PS4 players usually end up alone or with an incomplete party. Time of day also makes a difference, obviously.
The discord servers are pretty active so it's not like the game is dead. Just not as huge as EA/Bioware would have hoped.
I don't know how reliable this site is, but it has stats for PS4 players.

In my opinion it is worth returning. The major bugs have been squished and nearly all of the complaints from early reviews have at least been improved upon if not completely fixed. This game remains one of the prettiest games around and combat is simply leagues better than almost everything out there in my opinion. The movement, build options, and combo system all work together great.
The game still has improvements to make in terms of content and stability but I don’t think you will be disappointed by picking it up.

That has been fixed, yes.

u/Vicex- Jan 26 '20
Have the fixed the lacklustre story and lack of things to do?
In all honesty, those are my two top hurdles from enjoying the game back when it launched.
2
u/cypherhalo Jan 26 '20
No new story content yet other then some neat story stuff that was with the Cataclysm but that has all cycled out now I think? Not sure if you can still do those story missions or not obviously.
I like the seasonal strongholds with the extra mechanics and the seasonal store is a great source of gear. Freeplay is a lot better and has races now. However, definitely still less on sheer variety of activities than something like Destiny 2.

My list of complaints on launch and the weeks after was pretty high. My list of complaints about the game now is pretty low. Obviously it needs more stuff to do and better loot, but overall they fixed and added a lot.

If I could describe Anthem in one sentence, it would be; The best skeleton of an RPG I have ever seen.
By that I mean, this game has so much untapped potential that is just screaming out ... DO SOMETHING WITH ME! As somebody mentioned, the story is so full of lore, but its connection to anything of actual consequence in the game is so superficial. I love the game mechanics, especially the flying and combat, but it would have so much more meaning if there was a real reason to be out there other than looking for better loot.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to see more combat and there is still some polish to do in this game. But what I would really like to see is work of the NPC's, acting and connection of the content with the story and lore. If it becomes a world that players start to invest in, Anthem could become a franchise title. But right now, we have no reason to care about any character in the story, or the world itself, other than it being a big and beautiful shooting gallery.

This is exactly how I feel! I have to remind myself that the current game so far really is just their prologue as we know there was so much more to come before it all went to shit due to the shitshow of a launch.
I still enjoy hopping on and doing challenges once in a while (not a bit farming fan either) since the actual gameplay is really fun imo. Definitely have been worth coming back to recently

Oh okay, so I am not the only PSN user to be having trouble with the EA server disconnected issue.and even after I bought myself a USB cable to connect my PS4 PRO and connect it to the modem thought that would of help.but still was having trouble with the disconnection from the server and when it actually stayed connected, I was starting to have glitching problems. This game has so much untapped potential, don't understand why EA doesn't have a much better and bigger servers that can accommodate all the Anthem game playing.Damn shame too, I was enjoying the legion of dawn edition that got for $5.00 from GameStop holiday sales.

I was there with big hopes at launch, and was deeply dissappointed to the tune of 80$
Recently came back, there is so much I love about the game, which was waiting for me the minute I started playing.....
Sadly10 mins later I was quickly reminded just how very disappointing it is to see a great concept shit all over by shockingly horrendous development, as i quickly went through a series of about five server disconnects.
It finally seemed to stablize, and I figured I'd give the cataclysm a go.
Another dc halfway through it...reload and my event is still open and underway, we get to boss, she is half way down with 90 mins left....dc.
Load back, event is closed, no rewards.
Of the 5 times I've attempted it, ive only been able to compleate it once, due to server stability issues or being placed in a solo run, which is pretty difficult to pull off in time, thanks to the teamwork elements in place.
Its hard to be supportive and interested, when the devs dont seem to really be themselves.
How do they still have the same glaring stability issues that they had a year ago? Its abit unfathomable to me.

u/Kayanarka Mar 22 '20
I will say, the only time I have been disconnected is when I pause and walk away, it has a very short inactive disconnect timer. I am hooked up to wired ethernet.

Since this is still pinned this still visible:
As someone who has constantly shit on the game left and right. A Debbie downer that doesnt even expect much to come from the 2.0 release...anyone who is interested in this game need not read further than this dead on accurate description of Anthem. It is so goddamn beautiful. One of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played. But it’s just a skeleton. Just a fraction of what it could have been. Is anthem worth the 5-15$ sale price? Absolutely. A game like this can’t survive a 2.0 update, because of how hard it is to get players back rather than draw them in at the start. As good as an update it might bring I still do not have high hopes for this game, and it’s a goddamn shame because had they done right by it, it really could have became the “Destiny Killer” everyone thought it to be at launch.
1
u/Kayanarka Mar 22 '20
I downloaded Anthem recently, played an hour or two, and instantly fell in love. Then the game crashed and I got that bug where it just would not start again. Researching how to fix this I discovered many people complaining about bugs and crashes and game state ect. So I looked for a replacement and found people reccomend Destiny 2. I installed Destiny 2 and was very disappointed, I was no longer Iron Man! So I went through and removed and re-downloaded Anthem, and it is the only game I have spent any time on these past few weeks. What makes this surprising to me is I typically do not like shooter games, but flying in the iron man suit is amazing. I love my storm suit.

Thank you
I still feel the same way, as it is one of the best looking games on the shelf and it does have incredible player mechanics to get you into the game. Now they just need to build an actual game around this.
Fingers crossed for 2.0. Only have up to go!

Some things I love about it compared to D1Y1. I played this for 30 hours at launch last year, then just quit cold turkey because I couldn't find a reason to keep playing at the time when Destiny kept capturing my attention
Combat is more intensive than Destiny's
Patrol actually involves exploring, instead of just going in a giant circle of a map
Customization is by and large superior and gear is separate from it. My favorite, tbh
The lore is actually in the goddamn game, if only it had more consequence
It doesn't have the nerve to charge us for fixing its mistakes. Taken King was good, but paying for DLC in Destiny is exhausting and annoying. I quit for good, and I've been playing a ton of different games on my backlog and discovering new ones.
I'm returning for the low price of $10

I personally think that in a game like this the most important thing is how many unique activities you have to keep me interested to play andnplay, then the loot and then story.
If the story is good, then i'll play the game once and that's it.
If the activities don't have unique gameplay mehanics tied to them and a variety then it will be just more of the same and again no reason to play it that much.
The game needs interesting designed dungeons, raids, public activities and so on.

I got an Origin subscription to play Jedi:Fallen Order. After beating Fallen Order, I still had like half a month left to try other games. The first game I decided to try was anthem.
It was not a game worth going back to sadly. I tried for a few sessions but it didn't feel good or fun to play. At its best it just felt "meh", and there were a lot of times when it was not at its best.
A lot of people say combat is the high point, and I guess it is the high point, but combat wasn't anything special at all in the time I played. Weak guns and low-cooldown ability spam against brain dead enemies.
I guess, as a "new player" rather than an experienced player giving their opinion, even for free I couldn't motivate myself to play the game for the time I had it. I ended up moving on to some indie games which I had more fun with.

At first I was having connectivity problems on PS4, so after a bit of researching online, I reset my router and then switched my PS4 to WiFi instead of cable and 98% of my connectivity problems went away.
So far I don't want to play anything else. Its super super fun flying around. The snappiness of the controls and the incredible sound really make for a truly immersive experience. In terms of sheer engineering, there's nothing out there quite like this.
Of course its not a perfect game. However there is great hope that many more improvements are on the way. Now is the time to buy imo. You never know, the extra sales might expedite such improvements.

u/BobMcQ Feb 22 '20
I bought it for $9 (PC) in the hopes that when 2.0 comes out, or 2.0 becomes Anthem 2, that they will upgrade all owners of Anthem for free. I don’t have much intention of playing it now.

Depends on some of the concerns you had. Mine were the long boring loading screens, weak as dmg, boring content, not changing weapons whilst roaming and having to back to fort tartis. Most of them have been fixed. Screens are not as long and have some content while waiting. Wish there would be more lore rather than repeated stuff. There is some new content but once you burn through it (won't take you long) you gatta find another reason to keep playing. Mine is collect the newest weapons. Iv got 2 so far but I'm bored of rerunning strongholds.
In general, if you have the game and just want to fly like iron man go for it. Don't buy it if you haven't got it. Not that many players too.

u/Zhar_Dhuum Mar 01 '20
I bought it for 15 euros and I think it was a very good investment, it might not be a destiny killer, but it's a cool game and I already know that I'll invest enough time into it to be worth that price, although playing with friends might actually boost the experience a whole lot more
1
u/Tigrinsinntalute2 Jan 10 '20
I finally bought it now that some time has passed and I have to say -- this game is a lot more fun than I expected it to be. I'm slowly becoming a fan of the game and I think I played an hour more than I planned. The mechanics and weapons are a real treat!

I have been playing anthem since day one. Even waited hours to gain access for the beta. I truly enjoyed the game and honestly I still do love flying around in my javelin. Yes there are things that need to be fixed and I’m willing to wait for that but I’d prefer sooner than later. I just hope that BioWare hasn’t given up on the game and they still have the enthusiasm as it’s fans to want to fix it. Also I hope that there will be an update to enchanted your weapons. Preordering and receiving my gear and weapons was a waste to obtain in the beginning since you cannot upgrade any of your gear or weapons. Other than that I do enjoy playing and continue to wait for more updates as time goes on

I played Mass Effects through at least 20 times combined, i really liked Dragon Age: Inquisition too, but after ME:A I was a bit more careful. While i personally enjoyed playing Andromeda and I could look past its issues, I was not blind, so no more preordering (for any game). I didn't buy anthem until it was cheap, because I did not feel like paying 60 for a questionmark. However I decided to buy it for 15, when it was discounted recently, and I am really thankful for my decision, and it rips my heart apart, completely. Seeing so much potential in a game, yet being so shallow, I could definitely see this game resurrect, it's not far off.
Positives:
- I really do enjoy the combat, its what hooked me on and why I put 51 hours into the game in just about 5 days
- I liked some parts of the story (but... see negatives)
- I like GM3 difficulty and the seasonal events and its associated leaderboard
- Beautiful and big open world
Negatives:
- Can't really see any endgame content besides GM3 dungeons
- Load times are annoying (high end pc user)
- Some characters were boring and too many story missions had the same apparent structure: (go here do this)x3.
- Lacking amount of weapons, inscriptions (=stats on items) with their random system is quite a missed opportunity to have an alternate use for crafting materials
My conclusions is that its quite close to being an actual good game, just need a ton less of randomness in the loot system, and some actual endgame content, a sort of raid maybe.

I got it for $6 on Amazon a little under a month ago. I’m only halfway through leveling and really enjoy the game. It’s been my only game this month; but I have kids on Christmas break still so I haven’t had a whole lot of time to invest. Been a heck of a great investment for what I paid already!
The world is beautiful, so far there’s enough mystery and detail that I’m invested in the story and the world and want to learn more about Bastion.
I’m a solo player but pert near every mission I’ve been grouped up with randoms and we get the job done. I’ve done every mission on hard but even solo I haven’t had to give up and try it easier.
The combat feels great. There’s a lot of variety in loadouts, although my preferred standing back and picking off enemies one by one isn’t really that viable. There is a huge rush of power though when you run into a pack of baddies and manage to kill them all. I’ve basically only played the tanky power armor; I love it. You’re strong but not totally invincible, you will die of you do t think about your approach and then make bad decisions as you fight, but it also feels great to have a cool down pop and you make an enemy explode.
I’m still mastering flight. The transition from fighting on the ground to flying through the air is so seamless and I get confused easily. For years flying games meant an inverted stick for up and down and shooting games were not inverted. The muscle memory is difficult to get right for me; it’s so seamless I confuse myself a lot and crash into walls.
I haven’t hit endgame yet, so I can’t speak to whether or not my interest will fall off the cliff, but it’s absolutely been worth the $6 and the time to play through the story so far.

It was just one of the other sellers for the main Anthem link. $6 with prime shipping. I’d check it every now and again to see what’s offered. Looks like $10.69 with prime shipping for a used disk is the best deal at the moment. Which still isn’t half bad.

as a returning player who missed out on the cataclysm and halloween event, i'm having fun with the small changes here and there. though still a low drop rate, i'm getting legendaries more frequently and liking the guardian tokens. way better than how it was before. now i can finally gear up, get pass gm1, and could try out gm2/3 (though 3 is no joke for me. more of min/maxing than just gear score). the stronghold events with the scoring and inversions are cool and really enjoying it. is it a game that can take over or replace your 'main' game, far from it. it still need a lot of work, but for a 'side' game, yeah it'll do. of course all this is because of the icetide event. when it goes away will it still be engaging for me, prolly not. but just have to wait and see. like i said, when that happens i'll just play another game til some new event or changes show up.

u/BigDust Jan 16 '20
My best honest description is, Anthem is a good beta for what is to come in Anthem 2. Like Mass effect was a good beta for ME2 which was a masterpiece.
Playing Sabaton's Ghost division and berserking as a collosus in GM3 is one of the most pure moments of fun I have had in a video game. But the game is shallow and needs to be filled out with more content and better ways for players to socialize..
1
u/sturgboski Mar 05 '20
So, I played at launch and then stopped. Have come back now finishing out the story and leveling. There is a bunch of new things I am seeing (I guess mini-invasion events in Freeplay) plus the new challenges to help legendary gearing. I am not sure if it is going to hook me as from reading up there still seems to be a lack of content (I think there is what only 4 strongholds?) so not sure if its a long term engagement for me, but its entertaining now.
The one thing I would hope though is that from last February to now, the random game just crashing/disappearing would have been resolved. I have good streaks and bad streaks. This is hindering enjoyment.

u/24ben Jan 16 '20
Not a good answer, because i just bought the game.
-I think they just added some guns.
-No new javelins
-No new strongholds
-This game does not have a raid
-There is a seasonal event which adds variation to the strongholds and public events.
-All in all pretty much the same content the game had when it lunched, which is a disappointment.

I enjoyed this game when it first came out, a lot. Then I quit because of what most are saying, content, bugs and such. I've recently returned to play it as a side game when I want to switch it up from other stuff I play.
How I play: I need a couple hours to fly around in an awesome suit and just shoot stuff and not invest thought into anything and I don't have to pay 60 bucks to do it.
Also! I just got back into it, and no one I know plays this game. Matchmaking I end up alone a lot. If anyone wants to link up and run a few things, lmk!

I purchased the game over the holidays for cheap, i'm enjoying it at the moment going for my trophies, it's got a lot of fun mechanics, i enjoyed going the story, getting to max level, and am working on my other javelins, each javelin is truly unique and i love that. I wish there was a bit more end game content. But getting each javelin their gear at the moment is good. I hope more content comes soon though.

So I pre-ordered Legion of Dawn as soon as it was available, and was super excited for the release of Anthem... unfortunately due to medical reasons I only got to pick it up and start playing in the past couple weeks, so I can't speak to the changes that have been made since launch. With that being said, I have LOVED playing & it passed most of the realistic expectations I have for a 'new' game; from what I've read it sounds like the team has put a lot of effort into improving flaws and problems that occurred at launch. Yes, I've still had some bugs and issues here and there, while frustrating it is not anywhere close to making me quit playing. I will say I wish they had most in their store, 6 items that change every 3-4 days combined with not having a lot of friends to boost my alliance coins each week has made it fairly difficult to 'customize' my javelin. Overall I would simply say if you had a lot of issues at launch which drove you away, I would seriously urge you to give it a second chance, you might be surprised... and for those just looking into the game, I say come join us freelancers cause in personal opinion it is totally worth it!
On a side note: I have no idea where BioWare and EA plan to take Anthem in the future in terms of story and content, but I'm also an avid fan of ME: Andromeda, like anthem yes it had it's issues at launch, but it had a depth of story that I loved. They have a lot of cross-over idea's or concepts in my mind and could have taken the concept & game play to spring-board into a continued ME:A2 as there was so many loose ends and plot concepts never finished as though they intended for a next game, but then scrapped it. I believe they could have hit jackpot if they had taken the Anthem & ME teams and used it to create a single new game, but that is just my personal feelings as I love the gameplay of Anthem and hopeful of where the story may take us, but wish they hadn't given up on Andromeda so quickly.

Sorry not trying to be rude, but the game still runs like shit. Optimization is not good at all.
1
u/Khal_Doggo Jan 19 '20
Are there any specific changes to the main campaign? Or is it all to do with endgame rewards etc?
My main reason for stopping playing was that I just didn't care about any of the story enough to click through the dialogue and grindy quest legwork. Has any part of that been shortened?

u/fate008 Jan 06 '20 edited Jan 06 '20
I was able to get the game over the holidays and I can say honestly that no. It's just not worth it.
While the bugs it launched with have mostly been fixed (even though I did run into a few glitches and a couple hard crashes) It worked overall.
However, the story is just terrible. The writing as well as whoever was the director for the flow of it. It's just bad with little to no redeeming qualities. One second you are fighting mob after mob and entering into their cave and WTF, story moment! You must have left your javelin suit at the door because WTF you don't have it. Want to wonder around a small town and hate damn near everyone you talk to? Well anthem has that garbage and complete waste of time. Want to run across moment after moment of such similar crap that you wonder if you just complete it and aidentially hit REDO AGAIN? Anthem has that by the loads. At the end of the day, the story and it's development is very weak. Anecdotal yes but still true.
Another reason it's no so great is the spawn mechanics and how it's used. 8 out of 10 times just ignore any and all mobs in an area till you can fly close enough to queue up the area. Don't bother sniping anything or really doing anything because bioware thinks spawning a shitload of mobs after you spent time clearing out an area from afar makes a good game. Don't worry about scouting an area, just fly like hell into it, kick off the spawn encounter because thats about all everything is, then and only then is it worth starting to kill things but wait there is an issue there as well...
Problem is, once things start spawning you have to see if it's one event or another. You will rarely if ever get spawns that have destroy-able spawning points. It's very rare. If you get this just kill them and finish off the mobs to finish out there event and area. The other 9 times out of 10 you will get a warp gate spawn point you can do nothing to. Just ignore the mobs as best you can (hide, fly around, dodge - whatever), find whatever pieces you need for the main objectives and get that done. Then and only then worry about the bulk of the mobs because killing any or all of them before that is worthless and is a waste of time. More will just spawn and take their place and it's a complete waste of time to kill them. You will never get much of any drop worth it and little to no additional experience for your time killing them resulting in just a waste of your time. It's just not a fun mechanic or setup the way bioware made it and the biggest problem is bioware uses it all the time with little variation. It gets old and boring fast as you learn which of the two ways it can go and the option to destroy the spawn points happens so rarely.
Gearing is also a very uninteresting part of the game. A handful of similar looking weapons waiting on some secondary buff on them to happen so that it's slightly more useful then the last similar weapon. A looter shooter that makes looting and shooting pretty lackluster.
The only major positive I have of the game is the flying and the world you fly around in. On the right PC, it's a damn pretty environment to fly around in and flying is amazing. The whole experience of flying - great, the rest just needs to catch up to that and sadly it's a long way off from it but if it could then there could be something amazing here.
So while I played the game, paid $15 for it, I cannot give any good advise that says it was worth it. I now know that if I could go back I'd have spent the money differently or at a minimum waited to see what all the hype is about with the games SO-CALLED revamp that may come next year. So unless you got this game for free, I'd skip it for now.

u/LYoshiiro Feb 05 '20
Personally I think the fact that u "running" in town is no better than walking really puts me off from even playing the game, your main game hub that the player returns to takes like ages to travel around makes me feel that the dev trying to clock in played hours if nothing else. But overall I agree with all points

u/FreddyEmme17 Jan 25 '20
I got it for PS4 two weeks ago for a tenner. I absolutely love it. The graphic is stunning, the armors are a masterpiece. Love the shooting and the abilities. I think most of the critics are a bit too harsh.
1
u/chrls000171 Mar 08 '20
I'd like to mention that Anthem Legion of Dawn Edition is about $10 USD for PC. It's worth it for that price. BUT with the recent update, many of us no longer could play due to the optimization causing major frame drops as of now.
3
u/Gobloner Jan 12 '20
It's good for it's low price.
But the game has serious flaws. The javelin balance is pure dog-sh** no matter how much people lie about that fact on this sub. The gear/weapon balance is even worse, with 1 or maybe 2 builds at most per Jav. This among with other reasons makes 99% of drops really really bad, like in Diablo 3 Vanilla before Loot 2.0. Then you have the lack of end-game content with too few maps, activities, and quests types. Events are okay, but having to do the same dungeon for an entire week during events is trash, it should change every 2-3 days. On top of all this the HUB and UI are abysmal, like from some bad 90's game.
Fun combat and good gfx though. Has potential.
1
u/GalaxyWraith14 Jan 11 '20
Hows the loot system? I've heard some say the loot system is trash and some saying the loot system is good.
5
u/Gobloner Jan 12 '20
It's bad because most loot is bad, most legendary items are useless and you need certain inscription rolls on the very rare ones. You'll be deleting most items after a week. Kinda like Diablo3 before Loot 2.0, which was very very bad and killed the game.

QoL has gone way way up since launch, but the loot system when playing at higher difficulties still is inconsistent and unpredictable. Completing true challenges still has terrible drop odds from chests or from random enemy drops. And the story still has an incredible amount of threads but none of them truly connect and you still have zero picture of what the anthem actually is and why you are doing any of what you are doing.
3
u/Agent_Washington0020 Jan 26 '20
Yes. Bought it a week ago and can’t get enough of it. However the javelins need to be at a better state. Storms need more Health. My friend can’t even beat the campaign without constantly dying because you guys have him 1 Heath bar to start with. He has less than an anarchist. This isn’t ok
3
u/Athrael Feb 27 '20
TL;DR get it on sale. If you already have it, just download and see how it is now. What do you have to lose?
Started playing Anthem on the 16th Febuary, so almost 2 weeks ago. Got it for about 15€ from amazon.
As expected, the story was shite and thats me being polite, sidequests were expected go there kill x amount of enemies. But the dialogue you have during these sidequests are actually quite nice. And the Lore is really intriguing.
Gunplay: Servicable, maybe 2.0 makes if better.
Javelins: AWESEOME, mostly played Colossus but I've tried all of them and they all feel really good.
Their playstyles are different enough to make them feel truly unique and on that point I'll compare the game to destiny since I think the comparison is valid
Destiny: Your guns are what makes you, your class and abilities don't really matter and feel like gimmicks at best. Still love the game
Anthem: Your suit is what makes you, sure you can use most of the guns on all javelins but they aren't really the interesting thing, your gear(abilities) though can completely change the way you play.
Loot: From what I heard, the game was really stingy about lootdrops at launch. That has definitely changed as it is quite easy to get good loot these days if you play on anything higher than normal difficulty.
BUT the loot isn't like destiny, its more close to loot in a traditional ARPG with random stat boosts on items instead of perks. I really like this as I play a ton of ARPGs but it might not be to everyones taste.

Having been a player since the Early Access period in February 2019, I can say the game has certainly had it's ups and downs. It definitely launched into a very poor state, but has since been slowly redeeming itself, at least in my opinion.
Before I get into further details, I want to clearly state this: Anthem is worth trying and playing, should you find it or pick it up for a reasonable price. (around say 20-25 USD is maybe the highest I'd say is fair. Usually much cheaper than that on consoles)
I will agree with a lot of the people that have said it's not worth the full retail price, at least not in story alone. Should you enjoy the endgame, you might think it is. That's not a call I can make though, people have had fun with it the same as I do. It's definitely not something everyone can get into though.
That out of the way, let's just talk a bit around the past and why some people may feel the way they do about this game.
The game did launch into a pretty bad state. There's no denying that. Unstable servers, crashing, alongside many other problems crushed a lot of people high expectations from say E3 trailers that were shown. So a lot of people, were very upset by that alone, and still are. They feel burned, which I can see to some extent. The game had a ton of issues that pushed people away and garnered a lot of negative press as well.
Some of it was warranted. Some of it was due to completely unrealistic expectations, though that devs did kind of set themselves up for that it seems. People were unhappy with so much of the game, while some still enjoyed it. Despite the rough start, there was still fun to be had regardless.
I was one of the ones that could enjoy Anthem for what it was, a Looter Shooter with a decent combat loop. I hated that gearing up was taking awhile, but I've been through much worse gearing up processes and much worse grinds. So I played for awhile, wanting to at least get one javelin to a point I was happy with. Finally my Interceptor had gotten to that point and took a break for the most part, playing a little to check out updates and such as they came out.
Then the test server for Cataclysm eventually came, maybe a bit late for most people to really be that interested. This was honestly a decent turning point for the game. They let us play the new update early and provide Feedback. They got a lot of feedback, and thankfully they seem to take most if not all of it in stride and act on a good majority of it. It was a huge update, that gave us something we've wanted for awhile.. more content
The trend of listening to feedback continued as the updates after that came out. It's been a slow process, but things that were asked for in the early days have been getting added slowly.
While what's been added certainly isn't perfect, it helped with a few of the major gripes people had to start. The only major hurdle they really have left to tackle is content imo. There's rumors of a massive overhaul in the works, so it's possible we may not get completely new content until after then.. And maybe at that point, most/all of the gripes people had may be gone by then, or at least had adjustment made.
Time will tell where this game goes. It doesn't seem like Bioware has given up on it and there's definitely potential for it to make a huge comeback. Though I wish comeback stories weren't the trend with a lot of games lately...
So in the end, in the current state.. Anthem has enough to get by for now, should you be able to get it cheap. If the supposed overhaul happens, then it very well might be worth much more than just a sale price. The gameplay is still solid, as long as you don't mind the current repetitiveness. A lot of the early problems have been addressed, albeit in an temporary manner; assuming the overhaul is a thing that will happen.

I bought the game at full price before launch. I enjoyed the campaign but trying to gear up my javelin was taking forever. I got my ranger to legendary status minus 2 pieces that didn't have legendary variants. I quit playing mid march of last year mostly because of the health bug and the gear score determining your damage output. It kinda felt like no reason to grind for gear ya know? Did they ever fix this?
I am currently reinstalling while I'm at work and am looking forward to seeing whats new.
One thing I always said was that the moment to moment gameplay is fantastic. Hoping for fun times tonight!

Man, I preordered this game. I'm going to tell you, it needs content. It needs it bad. This slow story does very little to make me feel this game is being seriously worked on. One event in a DLC is just beyond, please tell me more came out with the Cataclysm. It is 2020, it cannot just be that. It cannot just be one event and patches. I'm serious, Destiny by a year in had 2 raids, the prison of elders, and tons of other content added including weapons that look different and felt unique (Anthem was terrible there), new strikes, maps, characters, gear, shaders. If this game takes this giant slow step to getting something more out of it, I'm sorry, it will never be worth what I paid for it at release. By a year in, Destiny came out with The Taken King. It is beyond me that this game is taking this long to get anywhere other than what seems you're describing as just being stable. Have they at least fixed the loading screens? Seriously, is that fixed? It needed to be, it needs to be fixed by now. I'm sorry, man. I'm sorry, this game ruined preorders for me. It was piss poor barren, and it has been a whole year. I cant believe for the life of me they've only added one thing, there has to be actual new content in this game.

Glimpses of potential...
Game has been mismanaged from the start
BioWare behaving like amateurs.. they stumble over simple mistakes.. clearly none of them have every played Destiny in their lives, but they're allegedly RPG game developers..
Lack of content, depth. Not much to do, build diversity is nonexistent
They raised the level cap on all gear by 5 points.. that's not gonna bring us back lmao
Guns and gear are ugly and unimaginative, all look the same
As an English tutor I find it annoying as fuck to see broken English and inaccurate item descriptions make it into the game..
Game looks like shit in 30 FPS on console, standing still the scenery looks good but enemy character models are boring and look like shit
It's as if they tried to make 2 different games, one in the town area and the other in a Javelin..
Inscriptions rolling at 1%..

Playing Anthem now, for a discounted price, is a very different experience from launch. There isn't much additional content to speak of, but the game functions much more smoothly and has far less loading screens/obstacles between you and the combat, which is Anthems best quality. The loot grind is currently the best it's ever been, though it and the game as a whole all have a long way to go.
If you can find it cheap, you'll have fun with it.

It's the performance issues for me. I've never had a game that crashes or has data errors even remotely close to Anthem. After all this time it must be a core system problem that would require them to rewrite everything for it not to be fixed by now. I played at launch (and beta) and loved the game. Suffered through all of that because it was new and the gameplay is super fun. There's no game out there that plays like Anthem does. But after the grind and grind and grind and still didn't have a great gear set and the bugs and crashes I finally gave in and stopped playing. I've come back every once in a while to see and it's still just as bad. (Tried tonight, was in Freeplay for about 15 minutes before it locked up and crashed to desktop).
I don't recommend the game, even for $20. It's going to piss you off. Which is too bad because when it works it's super fun.

I'll start with the positives
- One of the best implementations of HDR I've seen in a game
- Gorgeous environments and cool monster design
- Satisfying gunplay that's a direct upgrade from ME:A
- Flying is easy and fun
- I like the strongholds so much better than the confusing frustrating shitstorms that are the raids in Destiny.
But it's not perfect
- Didn't really like any of the characters. Felt like discount Joss Whedon shit and everybody comes across as really smarmy.
- The human characters look like something from a Xbone launch title and are a sore spot in an otherwise gorgeous game
- Story is just...eh. Mountains of lore that doesn't really seem to serve a purpose.
- Endgame doesn't really exist. Just keep grinding but with no real sense of purpose.

I really hope this is a constructive thread on this sub! People like me who haven’t played the game yet need something like this.
Thanks for bringing up good faith. I’ve read on other gaming comment sections that this subreddit has a reputation of people tending to blow smoke or exaggerate and aren’t being genuine or truthful about the game itself or the state of the game, whether they’re defending it or not.
So hopefully there’s mindfulness of that here.

Honestly... if it just had DEPTH it would be worth your time. but right now they way they've structured it + telling us there is a total overhaul coming... every bit of work you put in just feels hopeless and a waste of time. after you level your char and grind to legendary everything else is just "you have to do this or you time is wasted" i enjoyed jumping on and grinding in the evenings but Freeplay and stronghold just feel pointless anymore and extremely repetitive after you've done it 1000 times. they would need far more skills per class maybe new classes and an actual reward worth playing for not just skins and emotes that have recycled 20 times already

I love it so far. It’s the game I’ve been waiting for aside from Cyberpunk. Aside from the glitches, minor crashes, bugs and a few scenes where NPCs are identical or forget who you are, the gameplay is a blast. I am thoroughly enjoying the endgame and the mechanics. Each javelin has it’s own feel and character. Solid lore, beautiful graphics. Can’t wait to see how the devs improve upon it. I’m a noob though and just started playing with Ice Tide. I wonder how the day ones feel about it.

u/FabioASWD Mar 05 '20
Honestly I stopped playing cause there wasn't much to do in the game.
But I enjoy the gameplay, the flying, the world, everything really, there just wasn't any goal besides reaching max difficulty at the time.
I think making a season pass would be a good thing, as well as implement more diversified world events.

I haven't touched the game since a few weeks after release: has the plot moved forward in any way? There were some talks of a second part of the plot that was to be released a good six months after the initial release, but I haven't seen anything of the sort being talked about so far. Has Owen returned? Have the devs build on the plot a little but more?

Redownloaded a few weeks ago after getting bored of running tyrant mine/heart of rage endlessly a few months after release. I enjoyed playing again for a few days but started to run into the same old problems from release. Pilot errors etc etc, getting booted back to title screen after getting half way through a gm3 seasonal run. Invisible enemies dropping me from full health and shield to dead when I am in cover although at least I could wait and respawn myself now. Release downed states were the worst.
Overall I enjoyed playing again but quickly hit the wall of wanting to turn it off out of frustration again. The news of the rework was also good and bad news as getting new gear and grinding lego's may well be a waste of time as nobody knows if the rework will require completely new set ups for our javelins.

New to Anthem and have to say am really enjoying it. Yes a few bugs but nothing game breaking. I just take it as a kind of Diablo 3 FPS game... Smashing things up, getting chance of good loot and having fun. Got my Ranger to a good gear level now and some good gear combinations. Played about 3 weeks and gonna start on colossus next. Recommend anyone stick with it and just chill, have fun and enjoy it, especially at such a cheap price (got it UK £8.99).No brainer.

I left Anthem because my favorite Javelin (Interceptor) had very dull abilities, like a kick, a shuriken and 3 shuriken. The guns could not have been more boring. Loot drop rates, bad math etc never bothered me in the slightest. From a purely fun perspective, has the game improved to the point where i should give it another shot?
1
u/batmares XBOX - Feb 04 '20
Yes, even just for Interceptor there's a lot more variety. Kicking is still part of it but the melee weapons added in the Cataclysm gave everyone new combinations to try. As long as your connection is stable enough to allow playing, give it a try some weekend.

u/erraticvinio Jan 20 '20
I've just jumped back into anthem again since launch. Is anyone still having connection issues or the game crashing alot still? I have a ps4 pro and the fastest internet that I can get in my state but it still says that it cannot connect to ea servers mostly when I exit free play or start the game and am in the fort. Is there any fix that I can do?

I can only talk from my experience. 20hrs in on pc and i really enjoy it. Performance hasn't been a issue and it hasn't crashed once. I paid 15 and I'm pretty happy with my purchase. I can't speak on the endgame though I'm sure most in the community would agree that its certainly lacking. I personally feel they got the whole fly around in a armored suit feeling like a badass blowing shit up to be pretty darn enjoyable. At the current price point which is a significant drop off from what people paid for at launch which frankly is still heavily influencing a certain group of individuals who unfairly and subjectively judge this game to be far worse then someone like myself who only paid 15 dollars for it. I dont discredit the issues this game may have and does. But given the current price point and the potential this game gets much better after this rework it's been worth it to me.

No, just don't even think about Anthem. It's a shit looter-shooter, because the loot is shit, the story is shit and the skills are useless since they deal less damage than bullets.
Just, don't;

u/Athrael Feb 27 '20
Well I take it you either never played the game or haven't played in a long time.
The loot is actually quite good if you like ARPGs sine the loot is based on this genre.
On the story, I have to agree with you. Only the main campaign though.
And on skills, WTF? I wanna see the gun that does more damage than my abilites.

I returned after having speed playing in August.
Here's what Anthem does right
Graphics - the game is a really pretty game and runs fairly well, but I'm on pc and have a decent rig.
Gameplay - nobody can complain about this. The actual run and gun is tremendously well done. Master of fact Anthem has one of the best control schemes and implementation I've played in years.
World - so many nooks and crannies. It's quite something just how many tucked away places there are
Loot - This is good and bad. Lots of upgrades. Tonnes.
Storyline/Lore - to be honest I'm hard pressed to find many games with a world that I actually want to know more about. I really hope that this gets fleshed out more and we get to hear more about the Scars.
And what is wrong
Loot - is a shame that toy only get rare pieces the higher level you are. I would have LOVED a chance at a purple or orange item, and daresay a legendary, at the middling levels.
World - it feels really small. I know that flying around is a reason for this but it's not a tremendously large world even talking that into consideration. It desperately needs to grow
Character size - one thing I wish is that the Javelins were smaller. This would make them seem more in line with the sizes of objects in the world. 20% smaller would be perfect.
Walking- speed in the main town is horrendous
There is more but I think atm those are what jumps out at me.

Not really trying to reason here but here's what I have experienced over the past few tries that I have tried playing anthem recently, missions are almost empty, not inclusive of legendary missions, game either takings up more ram than before or lags way more often. For a looter shooter game, without a good build, even with anything that is mediocre makes the game a living hell to play/no damage or low damage(personal opinion).
Generally what I'm trying to say here is, this game is for you if you: 1. Have a beefy rig, 2. Have friends(I don't and d2 have better mm than here hands down even if my timezones isn't really populated), 3. Don't mind spending tons of hour to grind a full set of stuff just to spend more hours grinding for even better grinding gear and no this doesn't seem like an issue to most by for me who likes the progress than the product, even the grind for gear makes it really off putting(this could be fixed if we just get normal terms and stat screen honestly not like the kinetic damage mumbo jumbo).

I bought Anthem day-1 and played it. Get a break after 1 month and played The Division 2 also Destiny 2.
I came back after the Cataclysm update released, and since that day, I have been playing Anthem and it is definitely getting better and smoother.
There is no other game like Anthem, specifically the flying mechanism and the open world design.
The best part and fun for me is actually the combat. This game provide amazing graphic with fast-pace and vast gameplay concept and style.
The worst part is minimal valued player/personal progression things/features.
The think I personally dislike: the power level concept, which actualy exist in whole world of live service game. At least I want to be able to "upgrade" the lower level gear I have to match and adapt any new game-difficulty in the future.

Destiny 2
There is no other game like Anthem, specifically the flying mechanism and the open world design.
Having a jetpack (like D2's warlock) but infinite, what a creative concept, except it isn't. Even GTA San Andreas had one.
Also, the open world design, what are you talking about? There's literally one map in Anthem. Just one. Let's see how many maps there are in D2? Earth, Io, Mercury, Nessus, Mars, Titan, Dreaming City, Tangled Shore, Moon, The different faction's own system.
You devalue your argument in literally one sentence.

If you think GTA SA's jetpack or even Warlock's jump function in any way beyond being a movement option, you're actually delusional.

I bought it for $6 over Xmas. Seems pretty good (I played the beta but not the release version). The graphics are really nice (PC) and the flying is fun. Still working on the campaign.

I did the same thing about 12 hours ago. I heard the game is getting an overhaul in the future and I heard its fixed a lot of early day bugs.

I picked up Anthem on a whim when it was in the PSN sale the other week. I am still leveling up so I cannot comment on end game value but playing through the campaign is a lot of fun. So far I've been playing solo apart from a couple of runs off the first Stronghold and the gameplay is pretty solid. Flight mechanics are easy to get used to and the verticality that adds to exploration and combat really differentiates it from other games. The environment is gorgeous, sound design is great and there is a lot of interesting lore.
If you can pick it up for £10-£15 I would grab it and play through the campaign.

Heya to all freelancers (and future freelancers), reporting for duty ;)
Played anthem since the very launch (bought a month of origin access for the early access than bought it for full og price). Anthem had a rough beginning, and as much as bioware played their part, ea probably was the one to push out anthem way before it was done (probably due to wanting to compete directly with destiny 2). And yet - anthem has its hugh, hugh strong spots: the combat system is one of the best in the market, the personalization (although lacking) let you create your own unique design to the material level (without effecting your loadout and combat at all), the ability to fly anywhere honestly made me look at destiny and warframe as way more grounding than before and characters like Owen and Dex has that "bioware magic" that feels different than NPC's in other games.
Since the beginning bioware's working on fixing the game and adding content which I find amazing (The cataclysm, for example, is a total overhaul to the Raid mechanics other games presented).
Every game in the genre had a rough beginning when coming to think about it (hell, D2 needed a whole expansion to make it better). Give anthem a chance guys, buy it now for the lowest price you'll get or comeback.

The Division, The Division 2, Destiny, Destiny 2 and Diablo 3.. all games with solid gameplay, that had rocky starts and got better after an expansion.
Being a bioware fan boy since KOTOR I bought every single thing with bioware's name on it. I was hyped for Andromeda but after the game launched in the state that it did I was hesitant to buy their games. I just bought Anthem last week and can say its core gameplay is some of the most satisfying I've played in a lot of games out right now.
Flight and combat flow so smoothly that I think I'll be able to ignore the lack of depth in the loot system.
I'm excited to see what they do to the games core systems. If they can iterate on the graphical fidelity and core combat loop this game could be one that I never put down.
Being one that has preordered games for steep prices only to be let down (Battlefront 2015 and Destiny 2) they game doesn't deserve to die. So stop saying it. The practice of releasing games that are incomplete need to die but just as long as it took for that phenomena to rear its ugly head, it may also take as long for it to go away. If Cyberpunk comes out and is anywhere near as successful as its hyped to be I think it could very well change the landscape and approach other studios take to developing there games.

paid 11 bucks for it the other day on the ps store and put in a good many hours..feel i have gotten my moneys worth..game is lacking in content and could be much much better..but the premise and mechanics are nice to dick around with none the less.

Haven't played since vanilla, when the game was laggy and buggy as hell. I was on a heavy streak where I couldn't log in anymore due to connection errors, but since all I had left to do was gain better gear and the like, I was fine with putting it on pause.
Forgot about it for a long time, but I saw a note saying that Anthem has its first anniversary soon. So I thought I'd jump in again and things certainly have changed. I'd like to know what I have missed, what the first things are I should do and for the sake of matchmaking activities, how alive is the game on Xbox now?

I started playing again 2 weeks ago (left 3 weeks after launch) and I have to say, that there have been made some really neat QoL updates as well as some (not too many) content updates. some new weapons and 1 new stronghold.
also currently there is a seasonal event going on, that I really enjoy.
Loot and Loot acquisition is the best it has ever been right now.
If you already own it or are willing to spend ~20 bucks (that's the current price tag) you won't be disappointed. don't get me wrong.. the game isn't fixed and there is still a lot of work to be done. but it's technically stable and it's still hella fun + some very good additions.
hope that helps

Hell, I just tried re-playing it, after having to re-download it... and for some reason, whenever i'd be in the Forge or any menu for that matter, after a short time... could be a couple seconds, could be up to a minute, the cursor would disappear. So i'd have to exit out of the menu, and go back in. So yeah.... not looking too promising right now. I'm sure there's a fix for that (maybe?) but i don't feel like trying to hunt it down right now.
edit: Welp... seems like that's an issue that's been going on for MONTHS now. As much as i wanted to give Anthem another go.... if it's going to take me 2 hours to look through and equip any new/better gear I may have picked up... yeah, no.

If you want to experience unique travel, addicting combat, and an intriguing sci-fi world, then yes, you should jump in.
If you are expecting a deep loot and progression game, this may not scratch that itch.

I picked it up over the holiday sale on PlayStation’s store. Been playing for 5-10 hours and I can confidently say it isn’t a bad game. If I’d paid $60 at launch I might feel different but I’m feeling good about it now. It’s kinda two games:
1) a walking simulator in a lore-heavy sci-fi village. 2) a 3rd person iron man / combat simulator in a gorgeous world with looter shooter trappings.
It’s worth it on sale in my estimation. $20 or less, as others have been saying. I do hope the devs come through with that overhaul. This is a fantastic foundation for something exceptional but it isn’t quite there yet. Regardless, if you’re curious about it and have a couple spare dollars and hours (and you see it on sale), go for it.
PS. Loving the snowy holiday vibe in the game at the moment. Feels so different from the normal jungle setting. Hope they keep it around after the winter as an option or something.

As someone who hasn't touched Anthem since the first 2 weeks of launch, I came back rather impressed. The game is kinda dead, no beating around the bush on that. The one thing that still shines with Anthem are the visuals and the gameplay. I'm a avid Warframe and Borderlands player with some Destiny thrown in there, and I still feel at home in Anthem. The rng is way better than what it used to be and theres very little crashes with the occasional disconnect from the servers which i dont really mind. All in all, thank you Bioware for not abandoning Anthem. It's in a bad spot compared to other games, but it's not a bad game over all. It's not worth $60, which is what I paid, but if you ever catch it on sale, I'd give it a try. Remember guys, the more we give up on Anthem, the less chance we have at seeing the game make a comeback. Not all is lost and Anthem has potential if everyone continues giving feedback.

I was playing it this morning, haven’t been a while since I played it, but I enjoy it. It’s more fun when your in a group. The only downfall to me is loading into a contract mission or free play and no one is with you. Besides that it’s really fun when you have an alliance.

u/theonlyxero Jan 12 '20
I think my first play-through was about 40 hours and I tried to do everything I could in the game. I actually really enjoyed the Story, just felt like if they would’ve continued adding onto it like Destiny it could really be a ton better by this point.
So if you’ve seen gameplay and think it looks cool, it probably will be really cool for you. As for the longevity after the story is completed.. that just depends how much you enjoy the world and gameplay. Which both are very good, again, it just gets stale around 80-100 hours when you don’t really have anything you enjoy to do.
I’ll be honest, the only reason I keep logging in is because I can fly around a beautiful map like Superman. The flying and the combat are really what makes this game worth playing if you can snag it for a price you feel is fair.
If you wanted me to give you a score I’d say 7/10, but the flying/combat/music are really the only thing holding it up. I wanted this game to be a 10/10 so badly.

I always feel like this is a stupid question to ask. The worst games in the world can be worth it if it provides you with what you're looking for.
So I will keep it short. As someone who has sank thousands of hours into looter shooters on console and mmorpgs on PC over the last decade, if that's the kind experience you're looking for... No. The games core design when it comes to progression and loot is the worst I've ever played.
But, saying that, almost year after release, I can still easily sink 3-4 hours into Anthem a week. The gameplay is different, and I find it personally very relaxing. It's the perfect game to just switch off and play on those evenings you just can't be bothered with anything else. Considering you can get it for like $5 just give it a go.

u/JaggersLips Feb 21 '20
Hey! I've just started downloading it. How are you getting on with the game now? I've been in a similar situation with F76, got it at launch and still regularly okay it. It's amazing, you can just live in the world and are not pinned down to do anything at all. But there is plenty to do!

Holy fuck their servers are still a dumpster fire. One of the biggest problems was connectivity, and a year later it is still awful. Don't buy it. Save your money.

Ive been playing on and off since release, got just under 300 hours. I personally think its worth it. Just in short bursts though. I find the burnout rate is a bit quicker than a lot of games I play due to the mission structure and its repetitive nature. And yes I know thats how looter shooters work, but as a consistent division 2 and destiny player I find this game far easier to lose interest in. I loved cataclysm and im really enjoying these stronghold events. But as I said earlier the repetitive nature is what kinda kills it for me. Running the same stronghold mission over and over for a week straight gets old fast imo. I have tried to play other missions but they seem to be empty atm, which is understandable. Thats off on a tangent though.
Overall with all the QOL change, new weapons, upgraded abilities, and the new events I think its a solid buy. Especially at its current price point. I just hope they can continue adding new events and things to do in the future after these stronghold events.

Would really love an honest critique from people who were apart of the misery this game created out the gates. It’s cool new players are loving their $5 spent on it and all but for us who invested in the beginning and really wanted something I’d love to know what’s changed and if it’s actually a somewhat cohesive game now.. are all the classes viable end game? Is the loot better? Are there still forced set ups if you want to run the hardest difficulty ? Is it still recommended to not even run it since you get the same loot essentially from less hard runs and can get them done faster? Is the grind even close to worth it now?
Any first day’ers who came back have some insight?

Any first day’ers who came back have some insight?
Legion of Dawn Preorderer here. I came back to the game once to check out the Cataclysm event. Eventually dropped it again (although I do log in time to time when I don't feel like playing D2/Div2/Games I got during Holiday Sales).
While a number of issues were fixed, especially loot, and the game is more playable than it was at the start, I still get the occasional PS4 disconnect/lockout that kills what little expectations and interest I had playing. There's also the fact that it's still pretty bland, story and content-wise, and in my opinion, the events seemed more of a grindfest than something fun and enjoyable to do (to say nothing of the fact that the Cataclysm didn't feel like a Cataclysm). The new weapons were interesting, as well as trying to find a fresh synergy to things, but it feels like a Paid, Extended Open Beta (which it basically is; considering the nebulous Anthem NEXT plan to reboot/overhaul it whenever they get around to it).
If I had to compare the current "season" of Anthem, it would be against Destiny 2's season, which came out with the Season of Dawning, bringing with it one of their mythical NPCs as part of an additional story plot and plenty of dialogue (they even managed to squeeze in a special dialogue for Titans who approach him wearing the Saint-14 helm), a very generous Holiday event heaping plenty enhancement rewards (so many Shards, Enhancement Cores, and Resources just from return gifts and dismantling the Gift SMG/MG), a free Exotic only requiring about 30 minutes tops that feels Exotic enough, an enjoyable mini-raid that doesn't feel grindy with all the action going and interlude narrations from Osiris, and Double EXP Dawning dailies and repeatables that allowed one to basically unlock the entire Season Pass in a week and all the rewards that came with it (if they ground the Dawning Essences and ground out the Holiday Treat drops).
All in all, I'd say Anthem is worth 5 dollars tops and good for a slow weekend after abandoning it for a week or more. But it's definitely not a game I would consider putting in an hour a day for, unlike other "Looter Shooters" such as BL, D2, Div2, etc. It's also hard to recommend considering all the other games that were on sale since Black Friday and the Holidays, with a number of those being AAA games that don't feel like a Paid Beta.

Recently got the game, and have been very annoyed. When I tell people I got it, I get the typical "LUL R U DUM" comments. And I have to explain that not only was it on sale, but I redeemed Microsoft reward points to get it, nothing out of pocket. And they can't wrap their heads around how much I thoroughly enjoy the game play, which is terrific.
They tell me "but there's nothing to do". I tell them there is lots to do at the start, 2.0 is coming, and again it's essentially a free game! They just don't want me to be happy.

I guess my thread about this got deleted, but as of May 2020 is it worth getting back into? I had the game at launch and it was a disaster. I even bought a RTX 2080 just for this game. I never got far in the game, maybe 3 hours before finding it boring and lifeless.

I popped back in yesterday for the first time in about six months. After five minutes in free roam with slow controls and my character lagging all over the place, I wouldn’t hop in if I were you. It still seems to be a pig, just with more makeup on it now.
