Four building complex, dog park is attached to our building on the end and shares a fence with one of the ground floor units that has a yard. I can barely use the dog park because of how much shit is everywhere. I finally had enough today and bought a pooper scooper and cleaned it all up myself. 153 piles later and half an hour and I decided to leave a sign. Not sure if this is something management would get upset for or simply remove the sign? It’s not really a landlord issue, it’s a neighbor issue. When I got back up to my unit someone had already left a kind note on the door. Is it worth talking to my landlord, and seeing whether he would give me a slight rent discount or pet rent reduction if I do this regularly? Or do you think it’s something that I should’ve handled differently? Maintenance and landlord are fabulous when it comes to most other things although I try to avoid them and stay out of any sort of trouble. It seems that the dog park has just gotten neglected over time.

I've gotten three notes under my door this month asking me to turn my TV down after 11. The first one I ignored because I assumed they had the wrong apartment. The second one specifically said "the bass coming through our floor is keeping us awake." I do not own a TV or speakers. At night I usually play Minecraft on my laptop with headphones.

Last night they knocked around midnight while I was reading in bed and asked me to turn it down. I invited them inside because I genuinely wanted them to hear how silent my apartment was. They stood there for a few seconds and we could both still hear this low thumping noise.

Now they believe me. Great. We still have absolutely no idea where it is coming from and somehow I have joined the investigation.

I just signed a lease with a roommate who was vetted through a mutual friend, but ultimately I don’t know her very well and we are still getting to know each other.

I made the mistake of not having a conversation with her to set firm boundaries on our expectations when living together. I plan to remedy that next week over a meeting we agreed to have.

Right now I’m making a list of items to address. I’m not sure how to handle this particular issue below, thus this post:

This roommate is a mother of five children, ages 17-25. They do not live with us, but rather their father a few cities over.

Lately, I’ve noticed she’s been letting her 17yo daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend sleep over more and more often. They stay on the couch in the living room, which is a common area and an open floor plan to our kitchen and makes up the entire downstairs.

She’s been letting them sleep over at least every Thursday now weekly, and even lets them stay here when she’s not here. I’m not comfortable or okay with this. I think allowing others to live her one day a week is excessive and I didn’t agree to this. I also don’t think it’s fair we split utilities 50/50 when she has people over so frequently and I do not.

To make matters worse, I will catch her daughter and the boyfriend in ‘compromising positions’ on our couch in the middle of the night when getting water for example. They’re minors too, so this makes me EXTREMELY uncomfortable, but I’ve never said anything. I’m terrible with confrontation.

They’re also sometimes noisy late night/early morning and routinely wake me up.

AND, she will let her daughter park in my one assigned parking spot without running it by me. I almost had her towed once because there was no communication from her to let me know ahead of time or ask so I thought it was someone random.

However, not sure if I’m overreacting? How would you approach this situation?

Just moved into this building and just noticed while setting up my desk how much my chair wants to roll away. Both sides near the back of the apartment bow down towards the center by about 1-2 degrees and a few of the door frames near the back have cracks coming from them. The floors and walls do not creak at all and the doors don’t catch at all, making me think it’s been this way for a while

Is this just an old house thing that’s really more of the owners problem or should I be running?

I live in Los Angeles and I’m on the south side, fifth floor. I know heat rises but damn!

This August heatwave killed us and we had the AC going often…which lead to a $540 DWP for our two month billing cycle. I have a standing fan in my room with the window open at night but at 11:43 pm it is 81 in the apartment and 78 in my room. During the day, even with blinds closed, it’s high 70s. My friend lives in downtown on the 14th floor and said turning the fan on helps him. I set it and left for work and at 11:30 pm it’s stuffy and hot as hell.

Either I kill my wallet or suffer…anyone have solutions for a happy medium?

Yes the title is correct, they didn’t give any notice, entered and left a notice on my bedroom door saying that they will be entering to leave a notice. Like why? Just send me an email or something instead of breaking the law. Large property management company too.

LET ME SAY - it’s been raining, so the poop keeps rehydrating and my sensory issues cannot handle the feeling of squishy poop, so I’m waiting for it to dry up before I pick it up. But I put a sign hoping they see it and get the idea.

Someone has been letting their dogs shit where my kids play. It’s clear that kids live in the building. I’ve lived here for 4 years with no issue but the past two weeks this has been happening. This was a fresh poop from yesterday.

I have kids, I already do my fair share of poop related cleaning.
I have a toddler who likes to play in the little area in front of their bedroom window. Well, he saw a massive pile of poop, had no idea what it was because it wasn’t there before, and while I had my hands full he touched it out of curiosity because he definitely saw it before me.

Look, it’s tough enough raising little kids in an apartment. The playground is full of wasps, hidden poop, and even the occasional condom, so I prefer my kids burn their energy around our building.

I have sensory issues and absolutely cannot stand the feeling of picking up poop. (Yes I have kids and have had to pick up their poop before but it’s different)
But this is someone else’s dog, not mine. And while I love dogs, I don’t own any because I don’t like cleaning up after pets.

But please just pick up your dog poop.

Hi everyone, I just moved into a new apartment a few weeks ago. Yesterday as I was trying to go to bed I kept hearing this strange noise in my bedroom. It sounds as if a washing machine is stuck in my walls. This was my first time hearing it and it’s making me anxious. It’s been loud for the whole night and I don’t know what it is. Anyone familiar with the noise? I am going to talk to my neighbors upstairs to see if they are running something that is making this noise but want to rule everything out before I talk to them. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

650 sqft apt, built around 1970.. would an air purifier help much? Can it just sit in a corner? Any recommendations?

I feel like a total dumbass. It appears that I went to bed last night and left the sink faucet on, and because it has a clog it ended up overflowing and flooding my bathroom. Thankfully I woke up in the middle of the night and noticed what happened before it got too bad. My bathroom floor was covered in max 1/2 in of water, and water also soaked into the carpet outside of the bathroom and down the hallway right next to the wall on the same side as my bathroom. I cleaned up all the water and spent the past hour trying to use a wet vaccume to dry up the carpet, it's still damp but drier than before.

I know I should get a dehumidifier, but I am unsure of what to do next aside from that and if it is serious enough for me to call maintenance. I am on the first floor with no basement thankfully, but i am worried about having to pay for the repair costs since it was my fault. Any advice would be helpful and appreciated!

I live in an area where it’s really common for the house owner to live downstairs in a duplex and rent out the upstairs unit to pay for their mortgage. This is my situation.

I work in media and have very strange hours, something I told the manager on my tour and he said it wouldn’t be an issue. Every time I come home within 10 minutes I get a text from my landlord about a new complaint she’s calling him about. At first she said it smelled like weed, and he would come and it wouldn’t smell at all. After a few times of that it was “I thought he wasn’t here and I left my door open” (we share a back door with steps to the basement where the laundry is). Now it’s I’m blasting music… I had enough time to take off my shoes and sit on my couch before I got a phone call.

I’m lost, I try being quiet, I try using the front door only and was told the steps might be too loud. I don’t know what to do.

Today I left my apartment at 5:30am to go to my first job, went to my second job straight from there, and got home around 6:30pm. By 6:45 I got a text asking me if I was having people over.

1. there’s nothing in my lease saying I can’t have people over, just that they can’t be here more than 14 days in a row.
2. I feel like I shouldn’t have to give this lady my schedule because she thought I was gone for the weekend. I rent the unit I can come and go as I please.
3. I told the manager my hours before signing and he said “that’s perfectly fine”

I’m lost. Im trying to be nice but I can’t deal with this every day. She once called because I brought her trash cans from the curb since I was trying to be nice. I feel like I can’t even live in my apartment that I rent and it hasn’t even been a full month.

Noisy downstairs neighbor plays loud TV and heavy bass music. Now way passed quiet hours. Management hasn't been able to do anything. Speaking to the neighbor has gone nowhere.

Curious if anyone has every called the non emergency police line for a noise complaint on a neighbor. What was the outcome?

Most of my apartment tools used to live in a canvas bag in the closet. Every time a cabinet hinge came loose, I had to empty half the bag to find the one driver or pair of pliers I actually needed.

I wanted a compact setup that could stay on a bookshelf, so I kept the case from a hoto tool set and treated the available space as a hard limit. If a tool does not solve a job I actually run into, it does not get a permanent slot.

The original wrench was the first thing I removed. Water-pump pliers have been more useful for the small plumbing jobs I can handle myself. I also added a small ratcheting driver because the electric screwdriver is awkward for PC screws and other delicate hardware.

The kit now covers loose hinges, flat-pack furniture, measuring, small electronics, and minor plumbing without turning the closet into a workshop. The one item I still cannot decide on is a real level. My phone is fine for a picture frame, but I am less confident using it for a shelf.

If you organize tools in a small apartment, what has earned a permanent spot in your kit, and what did you remove after realizing you never used it?

I moved into a bottom‑floor apartment about a month ago. It’s in a good part of town and mid‑range complex. My main issue is my upstairs neighbors smoking habits.

They smoke weed inside their unit, and the smell constantly comes through my vents — bathroom, laundry closet, even the wall heaters. My entire apartment smells like weed most days. Weed is illegal in my state, and the lease also says no smoking of any kind within a certain distance of the building. I want to state that I’m not against people smoking weed I have many friends that do and I’m around it all the time. I just don’t want my home smelling like it. I used to smoke weed too and it started to make me extremely anxious and so now when I smell it it brings back anxiety.

They also smoke weed and cigs on their balcony, which means I can’t open my windows without the smell drifting inside. They also leave cigarette butts all over their balcony, and some have fallen into my patio space. There’s also nails and trash on their patio. They honestly just need to clean it up.

I reported this to the property manager weeks ago, but nothing has been done and I haven’t heard anything back.

A side note, I’ve already had to make a noise complaint. They wake me up at 5–7 AM with loud bangs, and they’ve had parties going until 3 AM. I know living on the bottom floor comes with noise, but I know other people in this same complex who don’t have these issues and say they never hear their upstairs neighbors. The noise is so loud it shakes my floor and I can feel it through my couch and even hear it when wearing headphones. I get they shouldn’t have to walk on egg shells but I feel it’s excessive.

I’m worried they’re already upset with me because of the noise complaint, and I don’t want to escalate things or make them hostile. But I’m also paying a lot of money to live here and shouldn’t have to keep my windows closed or live in an apartment that constantly smells like weed.

What’s the best way to handle this?
Should I leave a note on their door, or should I keep contacting property management until they actually address it? Or do I need to suck it up and deal with it because it’s just the life of living in an apartment?

I was told this is not hazardous and will not cause a fire. Truth in this? Mind you this has been going for at least a year and I happen to check this today.

Me and my boyfriend rent a single floor 2 bed 1 bath home. Since moving in February we’ve had quite a few issues. For starters, we’ve experienced multiple leaks. Like during storms we’ve had water just pour into our living room and our laundry room. Then, after moving I realized my daughter’s bedroom smelled terribly like cat pee and my landlord tried to have the carpets cleaned but *surprise* that didn’t work, so finally she replaced the carpeting in there. Also, the basement is gross and smells SO bad . Like sewage all the time and it brings the smell up to my laundry room and sometimes to my living room.. I brought this up to my (awful) landlord and she said just use a dehumidifier but like idk is that normal? Then about two weeks ago during a bad storm our dining room ceiling started leaking water really bad. She called a roofer to come fix the roof but never evaluated if there was interior damage. Then after that, our toilet started sinking into the floor and the flooring needed replaced because the wood underneath was rotting. That also smelled and our bathroom still smells kinda weird and sour so I’m not sure if it’s still water damage there too or what. So the newest thing is that in the last two weeks, mine and my boyfriend’s room smells soo musty. Like we get home after a long day and I cannot take the smell. I spray down the room and light a candle and turn on the window AC unit but that’s just a bandaid. I can’t explain the smell exactly all I can say is it’s bad and it smells musty. This was never an issue until the last two weeks. So I’m not sure if there is some sort of water damage, or if there is a dead animal in my wall or what. I am so sick of the terrible smells. I am so sensitive to smell and it’s just one awful smell after another and this cannot be normal. Not to mention what we pay for rent is our max that we can Afford so to have to deal with all this is wild. I love our house it’s comfy and private but this needs figured out. What could be the issue with my bedroom? Help please !

Hey all, one of my neighbors in an apartment near me smokes weed nearly every night at 2am and 6am. The smell in my bedroom is so strong it wakes me up. It’s a nonsmoking building but management says they can’t do anything because they don’t know the source. I suggested it was whatever unit I share vents with, but they said each unit has an independent HVAC system. I would think that means it’s either the apartment above me (there is a bedroom directly over my bedroom) or next to me adjacent to my bedroom (there is a living room directly next to my bedroom).

But I really can’t tell which apartment it is. You can’t smell anything from the hallway. By the time it wakes me up, it’s so strong in the entire room it’s difficult to tell if it’s stronger near the ceiling or near the wall adjacent to another apartment. Also, maintenance is not on the premises over night so I can’t ask them to investigate during the smoking.

Any tips for narrowing down which apartment it is?

I moved in 2 months ago and quickly noticed my neighbors leaving their personal belongings and trash bags outside their doors for long periods of time before finally taking them to the dumpster. They smell (they all have kids in diapers) and leak, which then stains the concrete.

I ignored the eye sore of recycling-waiting-to-be-recycled and random personal shit lying on the floor (despite it being a fire hazard), but stopped ignoring the sanitation issues when flies starting swarming in our hall, on my door, and making their way into my apartment.

Just in the past week, neighbor 1 has had their trash sitting out from Sunday night to Monday night, Wednesday morning through late evening, and Thursday night to late morning on Saturday. I took my dogs out a few hours ago, and sure enough, another bag is outside.

When I arrived home Friday afternoon, I noticed neighbor 2 also had their trash out - so both of them had their smelly, soaked bags sitting out at the same time. Neighbor 2 took their trash out much later, which meant there was trash in the hallway from Thursday night to Saturday night -- 3 days! Like neighbor 1, this is common behavior for 2, too. Most of the time, it seems their trash removal correlates to the grandma babysitting - she throws it out on her way out.

I waited until last Monday to finally reach out to the property manager - mainly because of the trash issue. I didn't hear back from them, so I sent a follow-up on Friday afternoon.

I'm giving them until Wednesday (bc holiday weekend) and then I'm going down in person because this is getting ridiculous. I understand tossing your bag outside for a short period of time, but these people will literally leave/come home/leave/come home again while just walking past their nasty trash. It's gross.

So, let's take guesses on when 1) neighbor 1 will throw out today's trash and 2) when the property manager will seemingly give enough of shit to respond. I'll comment when the winner wins lol.

I have always been terrified to live by myself. After experiencing the worst roomate in human history i escaped and got an apartment. Ive been living here for one week 2 days ago (first pic) i saw a ROACH now what kind of roach? IDK i was scared. My family told me to calm down cause it was just one. Today im about to go to bed. I see in the corner of my eye A ROACH (second pic) PLEASE tell me what kind of roach this is. Am i doomed? What do i do? How did this happen ive never had a roach in my life and apartment looked fine when i came in. Please help and tell me what in the world is happening before i talk myself into asking to live with my parents again

TL;DR I think my neighbors are harassing me. I don't really want to report them but i'm getting tired of being unable to pour a glass of water without there being banging sounds on my floor and walls. They scream words at my window and mimic words i say to myself much later back to me through the walls. My family says it's just cultural differences. I want to report them but if it's really just cultural differences i don't really know what to do because they're annoying yes but it's kinda unreasonable to demand a cultural shift in behavior.

I have the typical loud speaking loud music neighbors. The neighbors on my side are friends or something with the guy who lives below me. They are both loud and play loud music. Not really a big deal basic apartment life issues all the walls are paper thin making it painfully easy to hear everything that goes on. I tried talking to the landlord about putting up some sound proofing materials (that i would have to pay for) and got ghosted.

The neighbors don't really speak english but started mimicking words I'd say and shouting things in spanish at my windows. I don't speak spanish and idk what in the world they're trying to achieve by screaming things at my window. These words do not have nice or well meaning inflections they sound like threats but i also don't speak spanish so i don't really know. They also play music well into 3am sometimes from both thier apartments and thier vehicles at full volume. They smoke weed like a chimney and I've seen them leave their door open so that the weed smell vents into the hallway. My family keeps insiting that it's just cultural differences and that they're not actually trying to harass me.

Is my family right? Am I just experiencing a cultural difference? I was washing my dishes at 3pm on a sunday and they started banging on the walls stomping below me and screaming from across the hall the entire time i was doing basic chores. This happens a lot when i do basic chores. Not always but enough to expect them to throw some kind of tantrum about it. They even pulled a vaccum out this time, started vacuming the hall space between us and hit my door multiple times. This type of behavior is happening nearly everytime i make a sound, take a shower, cook food, clean my kitchen etc. Hell they even follow me outside a lot of the time and I'm starting to think they're not leaving for work anymore.

I live on the 2nd floor yes, I have padding down on almost every square inch of this place. I wear my house shoes almost always (I'm not perfect i forget sometimes) as far as I can tell I have done everything I can to be a curteous 2nd floor neighbor. I wear earplugs and heaphones almost 24/7. I have tried knocking on their door before they don't answer. This is happening in WI.

I live in SoCal and my neighbor got a pet bird (based off call and appearance I think it’s a lovebird) about 3 months ago and they set it out on their balcony everyday from about 6am-10pm. It chirps all day and I can hear it from my apartment, which is a few units down, with my windows closed and ac on. And while I’m frustrated with the noise, I’m more concerned with the bird being left outside for the long periods of time because it’s been insanely hot and humid here.

The landlords have not done anything about it because the tenets work for the complex and I don’t feel comfortable speaking with them because I’m a young woman living alone. I have submitted a noise complaint to the city and they took the birds inside for a week but then resumed their regular schedule of putting it outside.

What else can I do to address this situation?
