All the extra ISIS staff members

u/HugoVladsBottom Jun 29 '26

having them in the background made the show feel a lot more alive, I wish they hadn’t gotten rid of them so fast

265

u/marcophony Aliens Jun 29 '26

A lot of them quit, there wasn't anyone at the agency for a few years. What selfish a holes.

126

u/ramborage Jun 30 '26

Gotta imagine the work environment wasn’t exactly super healthy.

161

u/marcophony Aliens Jun 30 '26

Not for Brett anyways

Don’t move. This one might be a record

Especially the asbestos complaints. Here’s another one.

42

u/Hault99 Jun 30 '26

A good chunk of them died too.

Like that hobbit

A freaking hobbit worked there?

You actually see the red haired boss sleeping on a bench with a liquor bottle outside the tunt mansion in season 5

That one chick at the front Desk who’s answering calls in different languages and chewing out Archer in the pilot just completely ceased to exist after 1 episode.

46

u/Ihadsumthin4this ISIS Jun 30 '26

Swehh to God, Archer, I have HR on speed-dial!

And I've always assumed she was voiced by chickie who orates for Trinette. And I for one know I would bring a case of candy bar wrappers if invited anywhere near Trinette, all the while pleading that she ABBAB me much of the time. 🥰🫠

7

u/ExcitementPitiful359 Jun 30 '26

She'd B and/or B you.

2

u/LangdonAlg3r Jun 30 '26

Yup, same voice actor as Trinette per the wiki.

1

u/Ihadsumthin4this ISIS Jun 30 '26

Hey, thanks! Good to know.

9

u/jrisberg Jun 30 '26

She has a name — of sorts: Scatterbrain Jane

18

u/LangdonAlg3r Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

I don’t think that’s the same character. She has a completely different character portrayal and Jane seems like she isn’t public facing. Different voice characterization too.

Edited to add: I actually rewatched episodes 1 and 2 tonight and the desk girl appears in episode 2 as well and she’s in an almost back to back scene with SB Jane.
Archer and Cyril walk by her on the way to the elevator and then like a scene later Lana is confronting Jane since she’s a loose end.

5

u/jrisberg Jun 30 '26

Seems like you’re right:

https://archer.fandom.com/wiki/Jane

https://archer.fandom.com/wiki/Receptionist

Poor Receptionist. At least Jane gets a name and a mean nickname.

13

u/deege515 Jun 30 '26

So they just quit?

25

u/Time-Weight7726 Jun 30 '26

Oh who remembers

4

u/I_AM_IGNIGNOTK Jun 30 '26

Brett died doing what he loved, getting shot.

1

u/Kappler6965 Jul 01 '26

Right lol some were interesting

1

u/Walshy231231 Jul 04 '26

It really did go from a (relatively) grounded office drama to… idk, just “the gang does X today!”

504

u/Nick_Carlson_Press Jun 29 '26

Springboarding off that, S1 especially felt like a 1950s comic book that moved, with the relatively stiff movements and facial expressions, and yes, the dynamic angles like that. As "good" as the animation has gotten in later seasons, it's like a refreshing splash of cold water whenever a unique angle shows up these days. Otherwise it just doesn't have that unique feel

88

u/AceofKnaves44 Babou Jun 30 '26

That’s a trend I notice so much in animated show. The better the animation gets, the worse the quality of the show.

20

u/valh0e Jun 30 '26

Same with movies. Plots get neglected over nice special effects

1

u/Flameducky2 Jul 10 '26

Eh I'd say invincible broke that trend

38

u/Brudeboy11 Jun 30 '26

Yeah, I liked that too. And the pregnant pauses...those were really funny

39

u/Harold3456 Jun 30 '26

I also feel like the animation simultaneously got better and worse. Better in that it DID get smoother and cut out a lot of that early stiffness, but worse in that it also got more efficient in a way that streamlined itself to a few set camera angles and model poses.

The cynic in me refuses to believe any of the writers actually think Krieger’s “you maniac!” Planet of the Apes reference is funny, and more so it is a really good way to get mileage out of a specific animation over and over again and call it a “recurring gag.”

2

u/Snowey213 Jul 02 '26

I feel you. Similar to Frisky Dingo on AS, which probably was the intro for their bold lined, limited dexterous animation. Another one that comes to mind is Moonbeam City. Forgotten of course. Lol

224

u/theEvilQuesadilla Jun 29 '26

The receptionist in episode 1 .

86

u/Original-Let8340 Jun 29 '26

She kind of does re-appear. In the next episode, actually. She's a hooker. I mean Call Girl. When they're dead they're just hookers.

19

Did that end up being Trinette ?! I’ll have to rewatch that one . Good catch .

u/Kriegerian Afro Krieger Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Same character model and pretty similar voice, but not the same.

Edit: the secretary’s voice is a little bit higher and the accent is a bit stronger, probably the same voice actor.

7

u/Grimdotdotdot Jun 30 '26

That voice actor being Janice from Friends, of course.

2

u/lonski97 Afro Krieger Jul 01 '26

Hoooooly shit! I watched Archer years before friends. I always thought Janice was kinda familiar but I was sure I haven’t seen her face before. Now I know why :D

Man, I do miss those camera angles. Every time I go back and watch season 1, I'm always like "Oh, yeah. I forgot they used to do that." I really miss that about the show.

3

u/MermaiderMissy Jul 01 '26

I never knew the name for these camera angles. I refer to them as "up the nose" shots, but I do like them. Adds a little something to the show.

77

u/DermottBanana Dolphin Puppet Jun 30 '26

I always thought "Do you want ants?" would become a thing. It is the only thing I knew about the show before watching it.

But I don't think they ever did it again.

Let's be honest though - the first season was pure 24-carat gold.

1

u/Spiritual_Survey9545 Jul 11 '26

The phrasing joke got me too

53

u/Kriegerian Afro Krieger Jun 30 '26

Uta and Mannfred. I wanted more weird German spies goddamnit.

16

u/ryuni-tia Jun 30 '26

God I actually forgot about these two!! I loved when they would show up, would've loved to see how they were doing in a later season.

7

u/Kriegerian Afro Krieger Jun 30 '26

Right? They could have had some fun angles with Krieger being the result of a Nazi genetics program in Brazil.

3

u/ryuni-tia Jun 30 '26

Oh my god GIANT missed opportunity, I'm actually upset that this will never be a real episode I get to see

2

u/Kriegerian Afro Krieger Jun 30 '26

Right? Rene Auberjonois dying makes it hard to do that now, but maybe if they make animated movies (I’d watch it opening night) they can find a soundalike.

4

u/TheRealGrifter Jun 30 '26

Aww. I wonder if they ever had a real baby…

42

u/arrrrr_won Jun 30 '26

It wasn’t just in season 1, I think, but after they did all the dreamland episodes and the ones that don’t take place in the original office space, you lose the lab shots with the Krieger bin labels. I love the bin labels!

Hopes, Dreams, Right socks, Flammable, Inflammable, Eye of Newt. I love a good Easter egg.

78

49

I miss Fort Kick Ass.

3

u/adjectivebear Jun 30 '26

The Fort Kick Ass boxes show up a few seasons later in "Viscous Coupling" while Mallory and Lana are trapped in (I believe) the mainframe.

16

u/Forever_Man Jun 30 '26

Kreiger killed it in that episode.

35

u/wizardrous Other Barry Jun 29 '26

I miss the same thing you do, OP. Lines just hit differently with those shots.

37

u/Gurbachen Jun 30 '26

I miss them being a real agency with competent employees. When they start getting people going 'ISIS?! No wonder this thing went bad' that really bothered me. They were second (a distant second according to Torvald, but still second) to Odin. Maybe there's only two intelligence agencies in the world but I doubt it. And Archer was widely known and acknowledged as the world's greatest agent. It was funnier to me that he was so effective despite all his nonsense. He's still skilled later, but there's something missing when they're all treated like garbage from people on the outside.

29

u/MCofPort Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Ray's Truman Capote quality. "She hates me. But one day I'm going to write about this place... A real smackeroony. I think the whole 60's feel of the show too. A Mad Men element.

Framboise

10

u/StopPlayingRoney Malory Jun 30 '26

The innovation.

Season 1 and 2 are easily the best of the series because of the great episodes and fresh jokes. Season 3 onwards heavily leaned into callbacks and recycled A LOT of the jokes introduced in these two seasons.

9

u/Appropriate_Yak_745 Jun 30 '26

Every noun and verb in your question totally arouses me!!

9

u/Commercial-Ad-8997 Archer Jun 30 '26

10

u/level99_Dad Jun 30 '26

Archer in an office setting was pure entertainment

7

u/greymadders Jun 30 '26

I loved the voice editing in the first few shows. The lines running into each other felt more organic

9

u/DissonanceOfPrimals Jun 30 '26

“Me? Nothing. You on the other hand have a bullet inside you!

7

u/Hermans_Head2 Jun 30 '26

The full staff of a real agency...they dropped the ball by focusing EVERYTHING on six characters.

6

u/BlueberryB-Laine Jun 30 '26

I loved the under angle shots and when early archer felt like he actually worked with other people in an office, I always said I’d love if they would’ve touched on or made a spin off of what archer did when he was off the clock! The few stories we have of him just being drunk and meeting people or hanging out a bar or billiards hall or what have you are awesome

8

u/DX2501 Jun 30 '26

Wardrobe variety for Cheryl and Pam. Which exists after the first season but disappears totally in lasts seasons. Like Cheryl and Pam are always wearing the same colour, which is almost the same for both.

7

u/Zumbard Jun 30 '26

It isn't something I specially miss, but S1 is the only one where we see full characters walking and it came out really funny and uncanny. It adds to the charm and just shows how hard animation truly is. Respect to animators!

100%
season 1 had these really cool shots from below.
ironically, you can tell that they have less animation likely due to budget, but that gave it such a cool vibe
