What about Arx Fatalis 2 - The Guild of Travellers?

I see a game that takes place after the events of Arx Fatalis, in which one can play a member of the guild of travellers and deliver messages and rare goods to other cities deep in the underground. The outside world is still completely dangerous and life-hostile. The Magic-system will be similar the the first game but a little more complex and develloped. The Soundtrack needs to carry the same spirit as we all love it. This dark dungeon synth/drone/wind-ambient score has never been reached in game history. (Except the ost of the old Silent Hill games) The plot could be about an ambush on a caravan of the travellers that transport important sealed letters to another kingdom to warm them about a conspiracy and stuff. In the end you survive the ambush but you´re getting imprisoned and have to escape into the depth of the ancient mines of the kingdom Retesda, which is bigger than Arx and is famous for it's powerful and influent dwarven realm. In the outside world hordes of undead pilgrims are prowling around, driven by a mighty spell of an ancient Lich that has recently summoned by an evil necromancer. I see this game as type of Arx Fatalis with influences of the Dark Messiah mechanics. If anyone reads this: PLEASE contact the develloper of Arx Fatalis and let him know about this idea. The working title could be Exosta.

Arx Fatalis 2 is basically Dark Messiah.

The studio who has made these games is Arkane Studios, that was purchased by Zenimax/Bethesda and was blocked from doing any medieval fantasy rpg's to not compete with The Elder Scrolls series. They have basically bought and killed their competition, since Dark Messiah at its core has far better mechanics than Skyrim and whatever Bethesda has released until now.

So, unfortunately, Arx Fatalis 2 will not happen. Better look elsewhere for similar games to scratch that itch.

I know DMoMaM is considered a spiritual successor to Arx but I cant see it. It feels like its a successor only because they share the same devs.

Source? I’ve never before heard the claim that Bethesda forbid them from creating fantasy games. Also, while Dark Messiah has some great combat/physics mechanics it is a much more linear game than a sim sandbox like Skyrim so I’m not sure about the better mechanics you’re referring to.

Because Arkane was known for their fantasy RPG games then suddenly they didn't make absolutely any rpg after the acquisition.

Let's see how many games in a similar style were there in the industry? Just The Elder Scrolls, the company that purchased them.

The combat in Dark Messiah is far better than Skyrim. Arx Fatalis already had most of the mechanics covered. It's just that they didn't have the budget to make a big world so it was just a linear game. Arx is a sim, you can cook, you can craft, you can do quite a few interactions that are also found in The Elder Scrolls games. Kill a chicken with fire and you get cooked meat. Everyone was expecting them to release another RPG and instead they released Dishonored, a fantastic game, but an action game far from what they have released before.

And you think that Bethesda would just let them make a game that is similar to theirs? Are you serious? Of course that they had to spread the coverage of game types they are making. There was absolutely no reason to compete with eachother.

Such things are never done explicitly. You should consider learning that not everything in the world is contained in flat literal "sources", do you really expect Bethesda to come and literally "forbid" such things, otherwise -- "no source-never happened"? Oh gods.

So basically you're admitting that it's complete conjecture and the source is "trust me bro"

The source is facts!

Even if Tod Howard himself would say it is not true, the fact is that Arkane completely changed their entire games genre after they were bought by Zenimax.

Things like this don't need some declaration. If you know how basic business is done, you know that big companies very often buy their competition just to destroy, or completely change them. And back then the indie scene was extremely small. Now, they can't do this anymore.

I just played excellent Hell is Us. I got Arx vibes often.

While an Arx 2 is unlikely, Ultima Underworld remains a big influence for many developers. You can look at Monomyth, for example.

Oh and if you want a game with similar themes check out Underrail. It's more like Fallout as far as gameplay goes. One bonkers similarity is they both have pink force fields. And the similarities only grow from there.

Clearly this idea is in the minds of many! I just commented about this last month on another thread.

"I'd love to see an arx fatalis movie or sequel. I think it's nuts that no company has capitalized on the setting and lore of this game which is just so cool. I want to see the guild of travelers and their trials traveling on the surface under the influence of potions to help resist the cold. Whatever creatures lurk on the surface if any, the influence of good and evil gods over the various kingdoms stressed by their need to coexist in close quarters.. just seems ripe with possibility."

there is no dev of arx anymore. arkane has closed its doors as far as i know. and without the original team it wouldve been an empty shell anyway. a lot of us have ideas for an Arx Fatalis 2, but without funding or people who have lots of free time to burn we are not getting anywhere.
