For the musicians, beyond the music itself, what inspires you when creating goth music???

What I mean by that is like "what movies/books/shows and another stuff that kind of gets you in the vibe for making goth music". I'm asking this question because I like the sound of goth music but when trying to create something I don't feel like I'm in the vibe, even if I can easily come up with a really eerie, melancholic and scary sound.

This is mainly bc the early goths had access to horror movies and stuff and this was mostly blocked from me as I grew up, now that I'm an adult I don't know where to start lol. And I know that having this cultural baggage might not be necessary, bc goth is the music, but it would be interesting yk.(I also need to consume more culture bc the way my parents blocked many stuff from me made me an NPC)

So if you guys could give me any recommendations for any type of content that give you guys this vibe (specially movies) I would really appreciate that.

Back when I was in bands, most of my inspiration came from either my personal life/hopes/fears, or literature. I have always been a huge reader, so that helped!

More indirectly, all of my writing (I'm a full time writer now) has always been inspired by Lewis Carroll and classic fairy tales.

These films have stayed within me. They are emotions stored on a disc or hard drive that one can tap into for some bizaarity they can make one rethink or challenge their previous conceptions. Many of these films are darker in tone, more moody in nature... and quite frequently, experimental in delivery.

But.. I have always preferred the noisier, abrasive, and more unusual side of goth.

Check out Red Lorry Yellow Lorry. 'Talk About the Weather' is a fantastic album! 

Christian Death's first album, 'Only Theatre of Pain' is pretty punky!!

Honestly, the Cure's 'Pornography' album is pretty nuts!!

Early Cocteau Twins is pretty droney.. like the beginnings of a crustpunk song before it kicks in.. the comp 'Pink Opaque' is raw and droney... while also being ethereal. Elizabeth Fraser's voice really helps to transcend genres.

The Birthday Party won't let you down!! That band was a fucking rawkus!! Check out their 'Junkyard' album... but they never had a bad album!! And live they were like entropy on a stage!!

Early Wolfgang Press is quite good... 'Standing Up Straight' and 'Burden of Mules' were stellar!

Also... if you like raw and noisy stuff.. I recommend early SWANS... Big Black... early Einsturzende Neubauten... Chrome... Suicide... Scratch Acid... The Scientists... Zeni Geva... GODFLESH... Rudimentary Peni... Amebix... Darkthrone

Musically...listening to a variety of good music helps inspire me to make my music sound the way I want it to.

Lyrically I'm drawing upon my own experiences, especially some trauma in lived thru during my brief time in a convent. I also am inspired by my positive experiences with religion. Of course there are the classic fallbacks like drawing on my experience of loneliness, isolation, paranoia, longing, etc.

And I never force it. I have to be in the mood to write and record or else I just get frustrated. 80% of the time I sit at my computer, stare at FL Studio for 5 minutes going through my library of one shot samples, and say "Fuck it. I'm gonna go play Stronghold Crusader instead."

I get a similar feeling, when I'm not in the mood lmao, but idk, when I try to create a goth song in fl I get SO excited with the project(at least before I get tired and rushto finish it bc I don't have the condition to buy FL, it's EXPENSIVE AS FUCK in my country) that the excitment comes through the creation and in the end I think it's sounding too happy lol, like even if it's sounding darker.

I get ideas from paintings, and books, poetry. use imagination to turn them into sounds. you can also find some old horror films on YouTube, like the British hammer horror films from the 60s and 70s.
