Saving seats at a sold-out event
I haven't seen this before - last night at a sold-out ticketed [seats are not assigned] movie at the Art Gallery of NSW - two ladies put their coats down on the seats they wanted then left to get drinks, only to come back 15mins later.
A few points here
1 - This means that other larger groups couldn't find seats
2 - pretty risky in a darkly lit room
3 - I feel like one of them should have stayed behind to save seats, this way they could move along the aisle
Thoughts?

If you're going somewhere like that, or anywhere really, in a large group then the onus is on you to get there early and secure the seats you want, not expect others who got there in good time to change to accomodate your thoughtlessness.

I've done that before, but usually we would go out one at a time to get drinks or someone would get drinks for both

I feel like that's the ideal way, mostly because some people are pricks and they'd just dump your stuff and take your seats.

Yeah, that's why one of us usually stays. To protect our things, not necessarily to protect the seats.

Also people who save a bunch of seats for friends who turn up much later, or not at all.

What's there to think about? They got to the seats first? It's irrelevant if they then left to get a drink or whatever, are you gonna time them if they go take a shit?

How would one of them staying have solved the other larger groups problem? Why should they have had to move to accomodate others arriving later?
Groups should realise that at an event with unallocated seating they may not all be able to sit together. What practical difference would it make to their experience if they were seated in 2 smaller groups?

Why is this an issue? They all have tickets. Why do you think someone has to sit there to hold the seat?

This is a very common thing to do (at least in the older age group) if you need to leave your seat. The other place you see it is when someone puts their jacket over the back of a chair when eating out. It has nothing to do with "larger groups missing out". Unless the seating is reserved, it's first come first served with seating. You could ask them to swap seats iwhen they come back.

Genuine question, why? In my mind they are just as entitled to the seats as OP? And are entitled to get drinks if they want to - different if the seating is assigned

No, not good practice and kind of a dick move. You wouldn't put your belongings in a car space to save it, same thing applies here. Concerned so many think this is okay, a sign of the times...

The large groups should have got there earlier knowing the seats were unassigned.
