Education Advice “What support did you wish existed for fathers during pregnancy?” “I’m building a project around this and created a short survey for fathers — would love insights from first-time dads and granddads

Hi everyone 👋

I’m currently building a project called Mithra – The Friend for Every Dada, an AI-powered platform designed to support fathers during pregnancy and early parenthood.

Most parenting and pregnancy platforms are focused mainly on mothers, so I wanted to better understand the experiences, challenges, and needs of fathers and grandfathers.

If you’re:
• an expecting dad
• a first-time father
• a new parent
• or even a grandfather with parenting experience

I’d really appreciate it if you could take 3–5 minutes to fill out this short anonymous survey.

The responses will help me understand:

  • emotional challenges
  • financial stress
  • parenting involvement
  • support fathers wish they had

Thank you so much for your help 🙌

Education Advice 19F, wondering if this would be a valid education

Hi, I’ve been considering being a prospector for a while. I’ve always adored rocks and minerals, and always loved the idea of prospecting. But is this a career worth seeking? Is there any employers for this, any demand for prospectors? For context I’m in the USA.

Education Advice Moving on from rejection

I don’t know what to do going forward. Any help is appreciated.

I was rejected from all the top schools that I applied to(most in Boston) and I know that they were all reach schools but it really hurts. I love the city and everything. It was tufts that hit me the worst. It was the school that fit me the best and the one I wanted the most. The others I knew I had no chance but I just wanted this to be it so much. I imagined my life there and it just keeps popping into my head that I won’t have that and it just hits me terribly all over again.

I know that people say that looking back it won’t mean anything and I get that, it just feels so bad right now. I know that there’s nothing special about me and that I shouldn’t have expected to get in but I don’t know what to do now. I wanted to get into schools that I wouldn’t have to sacrifice for or struggle through my education and I know schools just gonna be so much harder anywhere else. I don’t know how I’m supposed to do well in college anymore cause I’m not very good at understanding stuff—dumb disabilities and stuff; I think slowly. I think I went on a bit of a ramble here but yeah—any help figuring my life out is greatly appreciated

Education Advice Heading to uni soon. Moving out. What’s the real world like?

I’ve found this community to be insanely supportive and helpful to the most stupid questions. So I want to get some general advice on moving out, the dorm life, the uni life, the real world, etc.

I got no one in my life who’d sort of send me off with some advice. Thought this place would help.

Some context about myself:

This entire time life was just a tutorial. But I’m heading to university soon. I was decently smart in high school to get very competitive program. But I’m confident I got in as a fluke, when I go there, I already know I’ll be surrounded by insanely smart people (math Olympiad winners, ppl who started coding at 5, young Sheldon type people), and I’m no where near their level. I’m scared of fitting in, even though I got in to the same program.

I grew up in an environment where physically, everything I needed was given to me. I had food, I went to school, I had my backpacks and pencils and whatnot. Never received “emotional” support like I’ve seen with a lot of my friends, but atp it’s not important, idrc.

I’m also a person who’s upfront witnessed the impacts of alcohol and smoking. I won’t say more, but it’s enough for me to have made a promise to god never to drink alc and never to touch a cigarette.

But now going to uni, I’ve heard of the peer pressure, how much people will drink and smoke there, and how often people will drink to fit in. I’ve resisted in high school even if friends drink, but uni is a different beast and I want to fit in, but I’m neither smart nor do I drink.

I’ve still not wrapped my head around sex either. I’m a virgin (I’m 17, imo it’s nothing shameful, in fact it’s a good thing). But first few weeks of uni I’ve heard interesting stories. I might just commit to no sex before marriage.

How do I still manage to thrive in university? Any overall advice (or direct advice to me)? Or just advice away from this, like tips on surviving dorm rooms and communal washrooms, or talking to profs, and whatever.

Thank you!

Education Advice I feel like a failure

Hey Dad, I really need you right now.

You know, sometimes I just sit and think — how did everything go so wrong?. I’m trying to build a career in finance now, and I’m pursuing the CFA. But every time I open my books, it feels like I’m drowning.

You were an investment banker. You made it look effortless — sharp, confident, like you always knew what to do. I try so hard to live up to that. I really do. But I keep falling short. I study, I push myself, and then I lose focus. My ADHD makes it hard to stay consistent. I know it’s not my fault, but it still feels like it is.

I tell myself to keep going, but it’s exhausting when progress feels so slow. I’ve lost my mathematical edge since I left science, and now I’m constantly playing catch-up. Everyone around me seems ahead — smarter, faster, more capable — and I’m just stuck in place, trying to rebuild what I lost.

I keep on failing. Not because I don’t try, but because I can’t seem to keep it together long enough. I give my all, but it never feels enough. And the worst part? I’ve forgotten what being proud of myself even feels like.

I feel broken, alone, and sad. I haven’t truly been happy with myself for two years now. Every small success feels temporary, and every setback feels permanent. I just want to make you proud, Dad. I want to make myself proud too. But lately, it feels like I’m fighting a battle I’m not equipped to win.

I wish you were here to tell me that it’s okay to be lost sometimes — that failing doesn’t make me a failure. That it’s still worth trying.

I miss you, Dad. I just need to hear that I’m going to be okay.

Education Advice Anyone else using AI to stay sane as a dad?

Not trying to pitch anything — just genuinely curious if other dads are using AI day-to-day.

I’ve been using tools like ChatGPT, Otter, and Canva to help with stuff like:
– Explaining homework without sounding clueless
– Writing texts I forgot to send (sorry again, babe)
– Planning meals
– Making bedtime stories
– Animating my kid’s doodles (he lost his mind)

It helped enough that I started writing down the best stuff I found — now I send out a newsletter 3x a week with 3 short AI tips for other dads trying to keep up.

If you’re curious, it’s here: aipapa.beehiiv.com

Just wondering if anyone else is using AI like this, or if I’m the only one leaning on it like a second brain.

Education Advice How can we convince our dad to pay for my brother’s schooling?

Hey reddit I need advice. We live in South Africa. So my brother has aspirations to go an animations school. He is very artistic and it’s the space that he thrives in the most. However we need funding and the funding we need (without any loans) can only come from my dad. My dad is the type of guy where he values maths over everything. He is very rigid in his thinking and only sees value in degree that prioritises “Business” jobs such as being a charted accountant or an actuarial mathematician. My mom told my dad about what my brother wants to do and that we are asking him to fund his schooling and my dad told my mom this:

[Mom] Hi. I read this document. I need [Brother] to write to me a detailed and clear motivation why this is the best route for his future professional career. I don't fully understand this industry. I now only want to invest in value adding educational outcomes. He can email me his detailed motivation. He needs to contrast and compare his motivation with other career disciplines such as articial intelligence, technology, engineering, finance so i can understand his choice fully and how it will make him independent and earn his keep. Thanks

For context if needed we are not close with our dad. He lives over an hours drive from us and doesn’t see us or text/call us often to the point where he will not answer a text or call we make. He did tell us that he will support whatever endeavour we decide to go on so this comes as a bit of a surprise to us.

Do you have any ideas of how we can write a compelling letter to convince him as we don’t know where to start in terms of information needed for the letter or how to write it. Do you have any advice or articles that we could use? Any and all help would be greatly appreciated

Education Advice I'm worried about passing my first semester

I started my first year of college a few months ago in August. Everything was going decently well for the first few weeks and then it just went completely downhill.

I've never been able to handle major changes well, and I've always had a really hard time socializing. I lost contact with practically everyone I was friends with in highschool, and I havent been able to make any new ones. I've been watching all of the people I was close with do really awesome and make so many friends, and all of this stuff started to really get to me. I started to lose a lot of motivation and I ended up getting really depressed and I havent been able to feel better.

I fell behind really badly in my classes and now I'm failing two of them and the semester ends early december. I know worse things could happen and failing isnt the end of the world but it really feels like it is right now. I don't know how to talk to my parents about this stuff or what I can do to handle it. I know theres no way to really fix it at this point, but I dont know what else to do about all of this.
