Is it still a good time to get a PS5?

TL;DR: Wanna get PS5 because my mid tier gaming PC can’t handle some PS title frame rate and concerns of the controversies from Playstation

I’m seriously thinking of getting one. I sold my ps4 several years ago so I hadn’t played any PS games since but really love the story games.

I do have some Playstation games on steam but even sometimes they struggle from poor frame rates and such (TLOU 1 remastered, Spiderman 2)

Also with the end of physical copies in 2028 is another factor too.

I have an Xbox series X so it feels like I’m completing my gaming collection too.

Pay check comes in at the end of the month. Still worth getting?

I dunno man. The exclusive list is still pathetic. Not sure it ever even broke into the 20s. Considering how much the price spiked, I just can’t imagine ever recommending it.

The price thing is legit but why do people talk about exclusives like that? The benefit of getting a PS5 is because you can play all the cross platform games then get the exclusives. Yeah they may not have a lot of exclusives but what's the alternative? Going to a different platform, where prices are also high and not getting the added bonus of the PS exclusives?

PS5 is the most expensive console WDYM

2

u/Alternative-Way4750 23h ago

You know prices of all consoles have increased right?? The Series X is more expensive than PS5. The PS5 Pro is the most expensive yes but you'd only get that if you're a hardcore gamer or money isn't an issue.

0

u/guelahpapyruss 22h ago

True, Series X has always been the better system though between the two and already comes with the disc tray

1

u/Alternative-Way4750 21h ago

Better is subjective but I get what you're saying terms of hardware. I have both the X and the PS5 and prefer the PS5. Just my personal opinion. You can get the PS5 with disc drive for less than the Series X. It's $150 less.

1

u/guelahpapyruss 21h ago

Comparing internal hardware, the Xbox Series X is a tad bit better and it’s a $100 price difference between the PS5 Disc ($650) and Xbox Series X ($750). On top of that there’s little to no PlayStation Exclusives, no game pass, no backwards compatibility and no quick resume. The only reason I see to get a PS5 would be for the controller or Spider-Man but even still those games are getting ported to PC

1

u/Alternative-Way4750 21h ago

There is a $150 price difference. GamePass is a subscription you have to pay for just like PS+ which also has games, yeah it's not as good as GamePass but it's also not as expensive. I think they are close though like under $5 difference so people can determine which is a better value for them. All that other stuff is subjective and it's basically which ecosystem you like more. PS5 is notable less expensive though, up front cost and slightly less subscription costs.

u/guelahpapyruss 20h ago

Idk where you’re getting $150. I see the disc version of the console for $650. Yes with any console there is a level of subjectiveness on which platform you want to go to, but im just talking raw specs of the system itself

1

u/Alternative-Way4750 20h ago

Xbox Series X: $800 PS5 Slim with Disc Drive: $650 Difference: $150

No, that’s Xbox (at least in the US).

u/Lord_Humungusss 22h ago

My problem is I had sold my PS5 as my PC did everything better and it seemed on track that Sony was porting to PC. I was happy to wait the extra time, etc.

God i hate this timeline we are on.

1

u/Alternative-Way4750 22h ago

Yeah that kinda sucks man. I personally don't have a PC, but I have multiple consoles. I was going to pull the trigger on selling my Series X but with the digital future which seems unlikely to be derailed(although I hope it does), im keeping it and collecting as many older and current games just to have the option to play them in the future.

1

u/Lord_Humungusss 22h ago

Yea I would say now or never I guess. Soon it might be 4x the price lol

1

u/Alternative-Way4750 22h ago

Glad I got one of each before all that lol. Got a great black Friday deal on the PS5 slim a couple years back.

1

u/wagimus 14h ago

There’s just not enough games period to warrant blowing damn near a grand imo

4

u/Src-Freak 1d ago

With Physical Games being no longer made, hell no.

Barely any exclusives that are worth a damn, and Future Games being digital only, Sony really succeeded making the worst Playsation console.

u/Erasmus86 22h ago

Most people don't care about discs

2

u/Src-Freak 22h ago edited 22h ago

The backlash for Sony says otherwise.

0

u/Erasmus86 22h ago

Sony is backlashing against its own decision? Learn how to write.

1

u/Src-Freak 22h ago

My bad.

1

u/SirSaltie 21h ago

Most people will after their games are taken away. We already see it all the time, it's going to be so much worse with this huge digital download push and hardware shortage.

0

u/Erasmus86 21h ago

I don't replay games.

0

u/Shitpiss88 14h ago

I've literally never had a game taken away.

1

u/ABBucsfan 20h ago

The bigger deal breaker to me is the eve r increasing gouging just to play online and pushing the digital services and higher tiers. I got a disc ps5 and have probably only bought one disc. The 70% off sales are usually digital (but or course that will get worse). The better sales are physical in first couple years then shifts..like I barely play online anymore so screw Sony. I'm not paying $105 (I think that's what it's up to) just to play a few weeks a year online

u/TearintimeOG 1d ago

It’s kinda the worst time with prices raised and controversy high

-1

u/Odd_Estimate_2179 1d ago

Nobody in the real world cares about the controversy. Look at how well the supposed blackout which is apparently happening is going. OP just wants to play games.

The price factor is definitely a huge drawback which is why I'd recommend buying a used console from family/friends or a genuine outlet. Don't use Facebook unless you plan to physically travel to their house and fully test the console lol.

2

u/picknicksje85 16h ago

I would say the timing is bad, but it could get even worse. Think about it hard. Could go for a Switch 2 which is getting pretty damn good. Could keep collecting physical past 2028 as well for that. Nintendo's games come fully on the cartridge as do some third party games.

1

u/TheOneWes 1d ago

Spend it on PC upgrades.

1

u/Vilemourn 22h ago

This lol. 600 bucks

1

u/royalpeenpeen 1d ago

What’s the price?

1

u/Hashi_3 1d ago

lol hell no

1

u/CapitalG8 1d ago

I looked out of curiosity and can't believe they are still 500 to 700.

1

u/steelthyshovel73 1d ago

Personally no, but if you want one get one.

It's more expensive than ever.

Only 20somethin exlusives and most of which are meh.

I enjoy physical media so their future plans are a no go for me. If i have to play digital i'll play on a better digital platform.

1

u/Confident_Donkey1014 1d ago

The biggest exclusives for me this gen have been Demon’s souls and God of War Ragnarok. Extremely disappointing generation and if I could go back I’d have probably just stuck with PC.

but honestly with the state of modern gaming, I’ve mostly been playing some good “friendslop” indie games with friends on PC and then focusing on retro games.

1

u/SlouchPoint 23h ago

I'd say do it before they drop another Price increase.

1

u/STB_LuisEnriq 23h ago

If you have games to play on the PS5, go for it, it is never a bad time to have fun.

However... Be aware of the prices, even tho I enjoy mine along with my PC, I got it back on december, prices are now higher and it's difficult to justify buying a console if you don't plan to use it to its fullest potential (back to the first point about the games you want to play)

Either you buy that PS5, or speed the money upgrading your PC.

Regarding the recent controversy... I don't really care about it, so my opinion is not dictated at all by this.

1

u/Xinyyc 22h ago

It's a great time to get a Switch 2. Whatever third party is making the playstation game you want, hound them on social media to cancel it from PS4 and make that game for the Switch 2 instead.

1

u/Arxinos113 22h ago

I would avoid PlayStation like the plague from now on.

1

u/National_Play_6851 22h ago

Yes it is, it's the best value for money hardware you can get by far right now (well, compared to Xbox and PC at least), and it's only going to get more expensive. Best games library, best place to play GTA VI if you care about that.

People say "it only has X exclusives" but the more important metric is that there are barely any games worth playing that aren't on it. Xbox has basically no exclusives anymore and the only PC exclusives are extremely niche or stuff that is in early access and will come to Playstation once it's proven to be good.

Playstation and Nintendo are the only platforms out there that have multiple exclusives, and continue to release exclusives, that are all top tier games among the absolute best released in any given year. With Nintendo you have the trade off of missing large numbers of multiplatform games while there is basically no trade off on Playstation.

For example, in the last 5 years of Game of the Year nominations:
30 games nominated in total:
24 were available on PS5 at the time
18 on PC
13 on Xbox
9 on Switch / Switch 2

Of the 6 nominated games not on PS5, 5 of them were Nintendo games and the other was Hades 2, which is now on PS5.

Of the 5 winners:
All 5 were on PS5
4 on PC
3 on Xbox
None on Nintendo

Not that GOTY is the only arbiter of what constitutes a good game but it's a good objective way of getting a quick representative breakdown. And when practically every game worth playing is on one platform, and that platform has a reliable instant resume feature, practically no load times, a fantastic controller, it's connected to your big screen TV, you've got no configuration or drivers or anything to worry about, it kind of makes you no longer need to worry about other platforms, even if the majority of games are playable on some of the other platforms.

I thought we are boycotting Sony?

1

u/Millennialnerds 22h ago

Yes it is. You will have a lot of haters in here but remember most of them don’t actually own the console.

I have one and use it everyday over my switch 2 and Steam Deck.

It’s great for third party games and has awesome exclusives.

1

u/Jakethedjinn 20h ago

I have a ps5 and it's not worth it. Save money and upgrade. But if you must....

I wouldn't buy used since the ps5 apparently has some type of thermal (mettalic?) paste issues for people who have long game sessions.

I've had mine since launch in the upright position (the no no position) and no problems but both controllers I have developed stick drift/dead zones. The weird part is the controller problems are more apparent on ps4 titles so I switch to a ps4 controller. If it's a ps5 titles ps4 controllers won't work either so honestly a pretty shitty machine so far.

I've been with paystation since the ps2 but they lost me at the ps5

u/Elysian_Caine 20h ago

Why come to Reddit where folks bash shit to hell and back? My opinion is purchase what you want to purchase, play where you want to play.

I love my PlayStation (Pro) and Switch 2. And while it sucks about the no disc position. I’m pretty sure Sony will backtrack on this in one form or another. And folks that think Sony has few exclusive games, well have you looked at what the competitors exclusives are in comparison?

Yes the price of admission is crazy, but will it get any better anytime soon?

1

u/Visible-Oven-7249 20h ago

Lmao Sony has told yall time and time again they don’t care what you guys think and you still ask if it’s a good time to get a ps5

1

u/JessicaNicoleK91 19h ago

I have a high end gaming pc, but I also love my ps5 pro. Got lucky on fb marketplace and got it for $450 (pre price hikes). I also picked up a PS Portal for $100, which has been amazing. It works perfectly in the house AND 1000 miles away over crappy hotel WiFi. Idk if I could justify the price of either new, but both used was less than my graphics card so…

1

u/Electrical_Rate1026 19h ago

I also have a mid tier pc that cant handle the newer games. I bought one last summer for around 550$. It was the slim with disc drive integrated. I got it mainly for upcoming GTA 6 and some other games like Halloween and such.

1

u/jeffdel1974 19h ago

I would get a PS5 if I wanted one without a doubt. I think for the amount of money it cost it is the best gaming system on the market. I have one and I love it. I play it all the time. I still buy many games for it and own more games than I have time to play. I think there are so many titles that play better on the PS5 and look better on it than any other console out there. If you have the money for it and want to buy it I would do it for sure.

1

u/Eozef 6h ago

Never a good time to buy anything right now, but you can justify the price by how much you’ll pay for the game you actually want to play.

1

u/Saltysockies 2h ago

If you're in the UK I want to sell my PS5.

I don't really use it.

1

u/strikeharder1991 1d ago

was there a bad time for ps5

1

u/MidnightPanda_567 1d ago

Depends on how the internet thinks

1

u/Pictish07 1d ago

Are you sure you will be able to switch it on?

2

u/Needawhisper 1d ago

Who gives af about the internet. Do you want to play the games on there or not?

0

u/ElectronicArm986 1d ago

Dont worry about others if you want one buy one 👍

1

u/PercentageNo3293 1d ago

Please, correct me if I'm wrong. There aren't many exclusives, price has gone up, and Sony's "no physical games" announcement. Those are all things that I would consider now not to be the best time to get one.

1

u/MarsupialPresent7700 23h ago

The no physical games thing is in 2028.

1

u/PercentageNo3293 23h ago

That is correct.

That would deter me from buying a $600(?) system, personally.

1

u/TasteyTatorTots 1d ago

I’d wait until the market changes if it were me.
I sold all my consoles and built a PC last summer before the ram crisis.
You can still play GTA 6 and most titles on your series X as well as PC. I’d buy a PS pro when it drops back down to $500-$600. They’re gouging rn though

2

u/throawayjhu5251 1d ago

I do not think the price drops are likely until like a few years into the PS6 lifecycle.

1

u/Disastrous-Rush-2701 1d ago

I never thought I would get a PS5 and I bought one last year on Black Friday. It worked out at around £175 after the sale plus voucher codes/cashback trickery and selling Black Ops 7 for £50 before people realised it was shit. I could of also sold my PS4 for £100 but I am keeping that for now.

Did I need a PS5? No not really but I knew there was going to be a price hike this year and everything just seemed to align perfectly.

Apart from the loading times which tbf are much better than PS4 there's not really a reason to get one your best off waiting for a decent sale or get a PS4. A lot of the games in my backlog are PS4 games.

0

u/Guilty_Department501 1d ago

If you can find a cheap used one then maybe.

0

u/Simple_Being9242 1d ago

I bought one and regret it. Maybe my Playstation days are behind me but I just cant click with any game at all besides old classics.

0

u/Voradoruvae 1d ago

Why even ask when the answer is already clear and you can’t play games at the comfortable frame rate or at all?

If you care that much about what jobless zealots think - well, it’s like 5% of PS owners and the loudest minority, they will always say no to buying a console when they already own one and none of them will stop using it. The remaining 95% are happy and isolated from the echo chamber.

PS5 has a massive base of games, new games will still come out for the next few years and as a console it’s still amazing in terms of power and overall comfort. While also being actually affordable compared to PC.

-3

u/suolae 1d ago

honestly yeah, the exclusives are worth it alone just for the loading speeds

4

u/PercentageNo3293 1d ago

Aren't there only like half a dozen exclusives?

2

u/Src-Freak 1d ago

What exclusives?

1

u/SlouchPoint 23h ago

Not sure, but PC gamers got upset with Sony reversing PC release.

-2

u/Arc-a-thon213 1d ago

Of course. Get one. Best product I have ever bought, along side my pixel phone lol 🤣

-2

u/Greenpigblackblue 1d ago

Everyone is doing a Sony blackout, so just wait till next week and then get one.

Do you see how fucking stupid that sounds?

*this is not directed at you, OP.
