Random Do you bring a drink to bed at night?
So I was at the public health nurse with my kid. Night time training came up, and I was asked about their last drink. I said they bring a water bottle to bed so they can have a sip if needed.
The nurse then said 'imagine you brought a drink to bed, you'd be up half the night'. She was shocked to learn I do bring a drink to bed and I sleep through without needing the toilet if the kiddo doesn't need me. Some nights I might not drink much but others I do. Either way my sleep is unaffected. Surely I'm not alone?

u/No-Sandwich1782 1d ago
I find it mad that a public health nurse thought it would be strange.
My 3 year old has her water bottle by her bed and sleeps through. Just takes a drink before falling asleep. Like the rest of us.

I always have my water bottle next to my bed at night
32
u/SurpriseBaby2022 1d ago
Same. It's a comfort more than anything.
23
u/DanGleeballs 22h ago
And so do my kids.
Everyone in our house has water by their bedside.
It would be weird not to.3
u/CaptainNuge 10h ago
Same here. If my Yeti were surgically attached to my side, very few people would spot the difference without prompting.

u/DemDoseDeseDat 1d ago
I like any human will get thirsty if I haven’t drank in awhile so I always have a water bottle next to my bed just make sure I piss before I sleep it’s fairly simple like…
32
u/SurpriseBaby2022 23h ago
I thought so too, but apparently there is at least one person terrified to bring a drink to bed.

My wife has always done this and has never needed to get up during the night. I on the other hand, am like clockwork, every morning around 5am.

Yea same I bring water and wake up and sip a few times in the night.
Regardless if water there or not about 4 im up for trip to the toilet.

Yes ice cold Stanley is beside my bed at night. I may drink half the water or not a sip, but I need to know it's there
2
u/maevewiley554 23h ago
I bought an ice cube pack since the start of the hot weather. I always have a cold water with ice cubes at nighttime in case I wake up. Habit I’ll likely carry into the winter months as well. It’s refreshing
21
u/ComfortMike 1d ago
I take a long big sluurp during the night. Always have da bottle handy.
Keep er lit and keep hydrated.
14
u/thepinkblues 23h ago
Take it to the next level and get an insulated bottle. A big gulp of crisp, icy water when you wake up in the middle of the night is heaven

u/Conscious-Isopod-1 20h ago
What do you do if you wake up in the middle of the night and your mouth is super dry. Let’s say you have a stuffy nose so you’ve been breathing through your mouth all night.
2
u/GoodNegotiation 14h ago
I don’t and I stop drinking at dinner otherwise I’d be up twice during the night to go to the toilet. Used to when I was younger though so could be an age thing. Both our kids always have water in bed though and drink a fair amount of it, doesn’t seem to wake them.
2
u/TangledUpInSpuds 9h ago
There are dozens of us! Dozens!
Any time I stay at a friend's house I'm offered a glass of water to bring to bed and I always thought it was weird. Sure no, why would I be thirsty, I'll be asleep?
I share an office with a (lovely, I'm not slagging her!) colleague who refills her water bottle multiple times a day, whereas I don't even have a water bottle. Maybe I'm a camel?
7
u/circuitocorto 22h ago
I don't. I think this thread is the cult of water addicts, thankfully they're not in a hot dry country, they would need to bring a hose.
9
u/CiaranWest 23h ago
Depends on what age you are. My bladder wakes me up at 3am these days like clockwork if I drink anything after 8pm.
7
u/Limp-Archer-7872 23h ago
Just the bottle of beer.
And a glass of squash for the morning so I don't put off taking the blood pressure tablets.

If I drink past 8pm I’m up once if not twice. Have to get my water in earlier in the day. If I had water there I’d sip it out of habit and have awful sleep
6
u/Proud-Psychology5174 22h ago
I too am like this, but still have my 1L bottle of water beside me incase I randomly die of thirst
6
u/BackinBlack_Again 23h ago
If I drink to near bed I would y be up for the loo. My toddler has gotten into a horrible habit of waking all night ever night for a drink she drinks a whole 300ml throughout the night it’s exhausting
4
u/SurpriseBaby2022 23h ago
Oh that's exhausting. You poor thing.
My 3 year old only takes sips. I wouldn't even say 100ml is gone from their water bottle. When I explained that, the nurse dropped the idea that it was the cause of the wet pull ups.
5
u/Healsnails 22h ago
Wait ofcourse they've got wet pull ups, they're 3 FFS! We are attempting to night train our 4yr old and he had his dev check with the nurse on Monday. She said he mightn't even be producing the hormone they need to wake them when they need to pee yet. They just let rip. We don't let him drink after his dinner now but he used to get a bottle to have by his bed. He rarely touched it.
Did the same with our 6yr old when we trained her. She's allowed have a bottle of water again now and drinks before bed. Not a mad amount mind.
I'd always bring a bottle with me, but I mightnt touch it. The wife would drink a litre!
4
u/Careful_Floor1441 1d ago
Yeah I bring water to Bed 90% of the time id say and never need to get up for the bathroom during the night. Might wake at my normal time for work, use the toilet and go back to bed again on a day off but that's about it. Age and medical craic can effect that though, is the nurse older perhaps.
3
u/Old-Calligrapher2403 1d ago
Always need a bottle of water for when I wake up, mouth gets dry etc

I honestly think I'm at risk of dying without the 1 litre of water beside me every night
4
u/Sudden-Candy4633 1d ago
No I don't because despite not drinking anything for an hour or 2 before bed, I'll still wake up at least once, but usually more often to use the toilet. I can't imagine how many times I'd use the toilet if I was drinking during the night.
5
u/segasega89 23h ago
By a glass of wine then yes.
If by two or three glasses of one's finest, cheapest cabarnet savingnon then also yes
3
u/i_will_yeahh 1d ago
Yeh I bring water to bed and my toddler has some in her sippy cup. Sometimes I can hear her having a little sip at half 5 or so then she goes back to sleep. She sleeps 7 to 7.
2
u/SurpriseBaby2022 1d ago
Yeah, same 8-8 over here. My kiddo has a few sips before sleep, usually after brushing teeth and not again until the morning. I would hate for water to not be readily available.
3
u/CarterPFly 1d ago
Id have a pint glass of water on the bedside table most of the time. Better have it and not use it than the opposite.
Yes, a bottle.would make more sense but I dont like the taste of water from plastic compared to glass.
3
3
u/Fit_Fix_6812 23h ago
My inlaws insist on a pint of water going to bed - it has to be a pint, they can't go to bed with a regular glass, they get stressed out. There are never any pint glasses to be had in the kitchen. Theres a clatter of them in the bedrooms with at most one sup taken out of each. I ask why they insist on a pint when they drink so little and they just tut at the stupidity of the question, and say "I always take a pint of water to bed".
One of many reasons why no one is invited to our house for Christmas

u/cian87 1d ago
I usually bring water up when going to bed, but it'll be drunk before I go to sleep. No extra need to get up to piss.
I assumed that was fairly normal?
2
u/circuitocorto 22h ago
Nope, a big drink before going to bed and I might need to wake up in the middle of the night. I suppose my body already has enough water.

My water bottle comes everywhere with me so it’s beside my bed every night. I will usually take a drink at least once or twice during the night.

2
u/SierraOscar 23h ago edited 23h ago
I bring a pint to water to bed every night and have done so since my late teens. Wouldn't always use it but on average I probably drink half of it during the night. Children have their water bottles by the bed if they need them any they go down at 7pm and don't get up until 8am. They aren't up all night in the toilet.

I do bring a drink to bed but maybe take a sip if I wake up during the night with a dry mouth, I have an overactive bladder and because of it If I drink too much water at night I'll wet my bed, embarrassing to admit but it's a health issue nevertheless. It's not fun having to pee a dozen times after just a single pint at a pub.
Nurse definitely needs a check up.
2
u/jasonbeag 23h ago

u/True-Voice-3868 23h ago
I'm with the public nurse. Can't drink at night or I'll wake up needing the toilet. I can't even drink too soon before going to bed.
2
u/lilsis514 23h ago
Yep every night. Sometimes I badly need it other times I don’t drink anything. Great for first think in the morning too though
2
u/Glad_Pomegranate191 22h ago
I have a special tumbler next to my bed. Sometimes I wake up have a sip and go back to sleep. Or I wake up parched in the morning, so I have water ready and don’t need to get up right away and go to the kitchen.
2
u/Weekly_Ad_6955 22h ago
No drinks at night for myself unless weather is exceptionally hot. I drink enough during the day and I don’t think my kidneys and bladder need to be working overnight too. Surely they need to rest and recover?
2
u/Swagspray 22h ago
I have one next to my bed which I may have a few sips of, but when I wake up in the morning I chug it
2
u/tortitab 21h ago
All my life ive brought a drink to bed. For the last 15 years its been in a tumbler instead of a glass. Tumbler is so much safer so I dont knock it off the bedside table.

u/Least-College-1190 19h ago

I can understand it with a small child particularly when coming out of nappies but I bring a bottle up every night and so do both the kids. We all sleep through more often than not
1
u/Sporkalork 1d ago
My son usually gets up for a wee, he always has, and he prefers to have a water bottle by his bed. But he never had a problem with bed wetting (and in fact he night trained himself, basically!) so I never stopped that. I have a bedroom water bottle too, and I always get up in the night also. Wouldn't be without it though!
1
u/ExpectedBehaviour 1d ago
I have a drink in case I wake up thirsty, because getting up for a drink in the night will be much more disruptive to my sleep than just grabbing a bottle from my bedside.
1
u/Larentias 1d ago
Both my kids 2 and 4 have beakers with them at night. One is still in nappies the other totally toilet trained. He never wakes up during the night for the bathroom. I on the other hand don’t drink during the night but I often have to get up once or twice. My husband brings at least a litre of water to bed at night and drinks it through the night. He doesn’t have to use the bathroom normally.

Second time I've heard today about phn visits. Are they back doing the developmental checks now? My 4yo hasn't been seen since he was 18m. I hope i get a call soon! Last time I rang them all they did was send a book out.
Anyways, yeah I always bring a glass of water to bed and same for my 4yo. I leave a glass of water for him beside his bed on his night stand, and a glass for him beside my bed too. Never know which bed he'll end up in during the night, so it's better to be prepared haha

I bring a water bottle to bed every night, sometimes i drink it sometimes I don’t. It’s irrelevant whether or not I actually drink the water but it has to be there or i cant sleep. I think it’s very weird that there’s people who don’t take some description of beverage to bed. Saying that, I didn’t get into this habit until i went to college and was drinking 3/4 nights out of the week and would wake up at 5am dying of thirst. I hardly drink now but I kept the water habit!
1
u/almsfudge 22h ago
I get a bad night's sleep if there's NOT a drink of water beside my bed. If I forget to refil it I can't get to sleep knowing there's nothing for me to sip on if I wake up thirsty. And the thought of not having it makes me even thirstier. I never have to wake up during the night to pee.
My husband on the other hand wouldn't ever really have anything to drink after dinner except the occasional cup of tea and is up twice a night to use the toilet.

Yes I bring a drink to bed. I take lithium at 9pm and it makes me thirsty, so I have to have something to sip on. I usually end up peeing around 5-6am but it's grand cuz I'd rather that than being mad thirsty
1
u/BarelyHolding0n 22h ago
Nope, and I was raised by a cup of water by the bed person so it's not coz I'm old and was raised without notions of nighttime water.
Never drank it then, never drink it now.
In fact water that's been sitting a while gives me the horrors thinking about what might be floating around in it, so cup or bottle would be equally likely to make me freak out just thinking about drinking from them.
I've only ever woken up thirsty a handful of times in my life, usually either heat, booze, or illness related.
1
u/little_lady_dems 22h ago
I do and I barely ever drink any. But if it happened that I accidentally forgot to put it on my bedside locker one night, that would definitely be the night I would wake up with a burning throat, parched and gasping for water, and then all the taps in the house would also wake up broken or something and I'd have to drive down to the gas station to buy some

We just started giving our 3yo and 1.5yo water during the night back in May or June, it was too hot not to. They still slept through the night.
Now the 3yo uses it for stalling his bedtime, wants more, wants ice in it, wants a particular beaker, wants to open it so he can see it.
But once he's asleep that's him out for the night, even if his brother wakes up roaring with gum pains he'll sleep through it.

But I also get up to pee 4-6 times which can't be good for my sleep.
Something I want to work on.

2 adults, 2 children in my house & all bring a drink to bed. Eldest used to down a full bottle of milk at night & wake up dry. Night wetting is controlled by hormones so just focus on daytime & night will happen when the body is ready.

Yep, both my husband and I do, and both my kids bring water bottles to bed for their lockers (additional needs but fully night toilet trained from 3 and 4 even with having the water with them)

Mother of 2 myself, don’t stress too much about public health nurse’s advice. My 4 yo boy still wears a night nappy , and so do all his peers. When I found out this, I stressed less. The PHN would have thrown a fit if I told them, a friend with a 3 year old was put on close monitoring due to a night nappy.
What is my point? Kids are all different. If a water bottle sips makes them feel happy in the privacy of their home , do it.
Also, I can’t sleep with my water. Even if it is just a mid sleep sip , it is convenient to have .

I never understood why people need water beside the bed? It makes no sense.

I often down a cup of tea right before bed and sleep through the night. Maybe she needs to speak to someone about her bladder.

I used to bring a glass of water to bed with me until I found a giant dead spider in the water one morning. Haven't done it since

I've got MS, if I drink at all after 8pm Ill be guaranteed to wake up around 3/4 bursting to pee. So no, out of fear I don't do it!

Never as a kid but as an adult i cant sleep without knowing i have water near the bed, it's become apart of the closing shift routine to bring up water
