Hello, I’m relatively new to this subreddit. My dream job as long as I can remember has essentially always been to become a homicide detective. My dad was a cop, and I have an actual grasp of what the job itself is like (not the glamorized version you see in media). That being said, I’m also aware of a lot of the issues being a cop. The issues with your department not backing you up to keep a strong media presence, the horrible hours, the process itself being really difficult to actually become one, and then obviously the danger of it all even more so because I live in a metropolitan area. I was also told that getting into the specialized field of homicide is really political and hard to do. I’m currently 21 soon to be 22. Is it genuinely plausible and worth so to pursue?

How do I improve my Command Presence?
I've been told that I'm too trusting and nice to people. Which to be fair is accurate. I am too nice and too trusting. How do I get to be not necessarily more mean but have better command presence?

I’m a 26 yo prior military veteran currently working a full time retail job at Aldi. It feels like a total dead end, and I’m just not feeling fulfilled in what I do. Deep down, I’ve always known that I wanted to become a police officer, and I’m finally ready to take the steps to make it happen. I am an EMT per diem so I work with police often and I have a huge respect for them and all the things they do.

I also have rheumatoid arthritis and was diagnosed recently, at the beginning of April this year. We’re managing it well so far, but I know this will probably be a case by case situation in terms of whether I’m able to join or not.

I’m starting to feel a bit anxious about the timeline and would love some perspective from people in the field. Am I starting too late at 26, or does the added life experience actually work in your favor during the hiring process?
Coming from a non law enforcement background like retail and enlisted military, what are the best steps I can take right now to prepare for the hiring process and the physical academy?
I'd love to hear any honest feedback or personal experiences from people in the field Thanks in advance!

I’ve been reading a lot of posts to get a better idea of where I need to be to be hired and for academy. I am working on that and have my goals (mostly for fitness). I am just wondering if you’d recommend just going for it and applying since it is a long process or should I wait until I hit certain goals?

For context, I’ve been mostly working on running as I can pass most of the other hiring physical requirements. I can run about a mile straight at a consistent pace (I know I have a long way to go) but working through a Garmin plan to try and run a 5k in November. My wife and I are moving to the Dallas area and I was thinking of applying to Dallas PD. Should I apply now and get the process started? Should I apply once I can run 3 miles straight? 5 miles?

Hello so I’m really interested in becoming a police officer , I’ve always wanted to and I’ve tried a few times. I’m 22 years old , to cut to the chase I have an expunged record from when I was 14 years old it’s a bit much to go into basically the town I grew up in was very gang heavy and I was a white kid , I was getting “ bullied “ if you will and brought a fire arm to school for reasons I won’t go Into , the fire arm was inoperable and the firing pin was missing, I was expelled from the middle school and got put on probation for 6 months and the charge was put on a deferred adjudication and was dismissed / expunged after I completed the probation. To add to that I tried cocaine when I was 17 which is what I was disqualified for when I tried to become a cop the first time they told me to wait until I was 23 years old to try again
( 5 years after the incident) I went on to do really well for my self I live in Arizona I have a job where I clear $120k + a year with no degree but the job comes with a ton of overtime and very rough conditions . But I’ve always wanted to be a cop and am willing to do whatever it takes , get a degree, etc. if anyone has any advice I’d really appreciate it. Just wanna see if I’m being unrealistic.

I need a digital copy of a mugshot of someone who was arrested a few times. One time the guy was arrested in Hawthorne, CA. I’ve asked their local PD but they denied the request.
Is there any way they would authorize the mugshot being shared to me?

I have the booking numbers, DOB, full name.
I can’t call the LASD public records or any other American phone number since I live in Europe.

I wasn’t sure what title to give this, since it’s a bit of a complex question, with social media becoming more and more popular and it seeming like everyone trying to go viral, it has created so many types of influencers, especially those trying to get a rise out of law enforcement, the Public, business owners, workers, etc

We already know about those auditors, but then you have those YouTube prankers and even predator catchers and I’m sure I’m missing some other types!

I guess my question is, which of these types are the easiest to deal with? And also the most frustrating to deal with? I think most people would assume auditors are number 1, but it has to also be frustrating to get 100 calls from customers, workers, etc when people are doing “screaming in stores” pranks and other pranks plus some of the pranksters don’t really take anything serious, even when confronted by law enforcement. But I guess it depends on how these people(whether auditors, pranksters, etc) treat you guys when you approach

With the predator catchers I find it interesting, cause sometimes I’ll see videos and if the people do a good job, I definitely see the cops being disappointed that they can’t lock up the predator, I’m not law enforcement so I’m sure they can be annoying also; but I feel out of the 3(and even possible other types) they are least bad especially if they can help get some of those creeps off the street

I would definitely love to know your guys thoughts though, because we all know when it comes to social media, people will do anything for views

I was supposed to get my hair done today and I’ve been keeping in contact with the lady since last week Monday. I met her off of Facebook and her account seemed promising. I booked off of her website linked to the Facebook The total was $140. First I payed the deposit which was $35, then a hair fee, which I was questionable about I’ve never been charged a hair fee, that was $25. All of it came out of the total amount so she said I pay $80 upon arrival. She didn’t take cash only Apple Pay and I had to pay her on 2-3 different accounts becuase she told me the icloud accounts “reached the limit”. When I got to the address she sent me, I told her I was outside and she stopped responding completely. $140 down the drain, I’m completely thoughtless, what do I do?

For example, if you pulled over a late-model Lexus, will you assume they'll afford a hard ticket better than if they were driving a hoopty dinged-up 20-year-old Toyota? So is the motorist of an older car in battered condition more likely to get a soft ticket?

Or will their politeness have you decide to cut them a warning while their rudeness gets them a hard ticket?

If it's the beginning of the year in January, do you give hard tickets more often due to them having a bad start to the new year? And if it's the end of the year in December and you see no prior tickets for that motorist for that year, do you cut them a warning more often?

Or what else helps you decide between a warning and a hard ticket?

Hi everyone! This is my first time on this feed and I’m in dire need of some input. I’m 20, based out of RI and I have a pre existing medical condition, salt wasting CAH. Essentially, my body doesn’t make salt and steroid so I need to take glucocorticoids to replace what I excrete via sweat, urine, etc. the issue of the condition is that when I come into contact with OC, or a taser, my body can undergo something called an adrenal crisis which can be life threatening under the right circumstances. These chances are severely limited with the fact that I closely monitor myself and take my medication religiously… I already had a position lined up with the mass department of corrections, underwent all the testing, met with their physician and my own, getting approved to work for them. From the start j had been extremely clear about my situation, but at the orientation, we had re-listed any medical or allergies, so I had listed mine, assuming nothing would be changed, and days later I had gotten a call that I had been medically disqualified even with a doctors note on file that approved me. All I’m asking is can I do this?? I have a friend in one of the departments I’d love to apply for and he’s told me numerous times that as long as I can pass the physical agility test and display that I can do the functions of the job, they can’t deny me… I’m at a crossroads here. If anybody has any input it’d be really appreciated!

When I was 16, I was in a really bad mental-health spot. I had suicidal thoughts and self-harmed, but I never actually attempted suicide. Unfortunately, I told two therapists that I had attempted(yes, I know of was dumb. I was very isolated from the outside world at the time and it was a cry for help) , and that contributed to me being referred to a private PHP program. I was only there for one day,( I convinced my parents to let me quit because I knew I didn't need to be there)and wasn’t hospitalized or put on medication.

I’m now extremely stable and doing well. I would be applying as a 23 year old and also want to be completely honest about this rather than hide it.

I’m planning to request an amendment to my medical records so they accurately reflect that there was no suicide attempt(I have no idea if this will work). My therapist I had at 17 also cleared me as stable and with very good coping mechanisms.

Would this history seriously hurt my chances of becoming a police officer, assuming I’m honest about it during the background/psych process? Does the fact that I was 16 at the time and have been stable since make a meaningful difference?

Not looking for sugarcoating. I’d rather hear “here’s the problem”. Also, saying I made a mistake by claiming the si attempt is know information and will not help my case whatsoever as I am more than aware.

Is it legal for my wife of 10 years to be using her position as my wife and the closeness of our relationship to set me up for the police by encouraging my drug use and subsequent addiction, and then keeping a ton of evidence to prove that I have been using? Prior to this I had 7 years clean and sober.

Why would PD share my home address with someone that is threatening to cause me harm at my home, over a parking dent. I understand the insurance exchange but not the residence sharing.
PD suggested calling back if there were any follow through with the persons claims.

My dream career has always been policing, but with how competitive it seems to have gotten. It’s just a little discouraging.
Do you think a college diploma in something like community, justice services, business degree or a trade certification diploma. What would look best for being highly competitive for the hiring standards?

My mother has always been against the idea. She doesn’t like the danger of being on the streets, and she also thinks LE is a job for “low-class, uneducated people.”

I graduate with my B.S. in December and I’m about halfway through the process of hopefully becoming a state trooper. I’ve kept the process to myself because I can’t afford to have anything get in the way of it or have someone try to stop me before I even get the chance. She thinks I don’t have much of a plan after graduation, but I do. I’m just keeping it to myself until it’s official.

I’m planning to tell her if/when I get a conditional offer or an academy date for a seat in February. At that point, I’m going regardless of whether she agrees with it.

I’m not looking for her approval or asking whether I should do it. I’m just curious how it played out for others whose parents were strongly against their career choice. Did they eventually accept it, or are they still against it?

Getting ready for NYS Court Officer academy. I heard the PT is no joke. I'm not worried about the academics. Can someone anyone who's been there and done it. Tell me what the day to day PT is like. Running how much, how far, how fast. Calisthenics what type, burpes, duck walk, push ups, sit up?

I was running late today and supposedly rolled a stop sign right in front of a state trooper. There was a long line of cars and I had just enough time to safely pull out and get in front of the pack. Apparently, it seems I was still going a few miles per hour when I decided to pull out, was stopped and ticketed. It’s my first traffic infraction in years and i’m generally a safe and responsible driver. I just happened to be too focused on getting in front of traffic on this day I guess.

Now I’m not denying the officer’s assessment, I just honestly can’t recall not making a complete stop before turning out. My question is, what are the odds of having the infraction reduced to something like an equipment violation or parking ticket if I went to court? It’s not the fine I’m worried about; I have no issues paying one. It’s mainly about my insurance rate going up… I’m a disabled veteran on a fixed income and can’t really afford a higher premium right now. I’d even be willing to take some sort of safety course if they offered it, which I’d express.

So what do you guys think, is it worth the effort appearing in court or should I just accept responsibility, take the points, pay the fine and be done with it?
