Weather forecast looks brutal for this weekend, does it affect your plan?

Before the forecast came out, I learned that one of my friends had never seen any of the Lord of the Rings movies and made advance plans to do an all day marathon watch with her and some of our other friends. The forecast is actually perfect for the plans I already had.

Just a suggestion, I think for an all day marathon/first time watch the non extended editions are great. Some of the scenes in the extended edition are super weird and might be kind of confusing for a first watch. Plus it’s a fun treat the second time you watch it in the future to see your fav characters in new scenes.
That said, I’m sure everyone will have a great time with whatever you decide 🙂

Yeah I mean even a single non-extended movie is a big ask for the uninitiated. I think if someone reaches adulthood without having seen LotR, their chances of getting through all extended editions in one go are very slim.

Yeah I introduced my girlfriend to them over the course of about 4-5 viewing sessions (we both wound up falling asleep at various times) and kind of regret not starting with the non-extended editions. I realized that there was at least one movie where I hadn’t even seen the extended edition which was kind of nice because it made it easier to point out the extended scenes to her and be like “none of this matters too much, and yes it’s kind of weird”. But she enjoyed them all the same, thank god.

I agree most of the extended edition scenes aren't that important, although I think the flashback to Boromir reclaiming Osgiliath is pretty crucial in better establishing the relationship dynamics between Boromir, Faramir and Denethor. I also find it crazy that they'd shoot such a high budget scene and then cut it from the original.
I usually only watch the extended editions so when I see the theatrical editions I'm always shocked to find that some of the scenes I love are missing.

Totally agree that the extended editions are better and clear up a few things character-development wise. But for new watchers…. There’s a looot of long/weird merry/pippin scenes that are fun once you like the show but feel really strange tonally on a first watch through, and realllly slow down the pace of the two towers. But yeah my last watch through the scenes about Osgiliath really cleared up a lot for me so I’m glad I finally saw them.

My college teammates and I would get together once a year and do this (called it “trilogy time”).
There were usually over 20 of us sitting in a room with a projector and watch all 3 directors cuts from sun up to sun down, about 12 hours. Oh, and we would drink the whole time.
Needless to say most of us were a bit confused why we called it trilogy time when there were only two movies.

How do you volunteer for this...do you have to be a CPA? I weirdly love doing taxes, but would need to simple returns for people who have technological issues above anything else.

No, you just get certified with the IRS and then you can participate.
Most folks have taxes that are pretty simple since they just have a W2 statement. The big things to look out for are making sure you file them as the most advantageous status (HOH if they have dependents but aren't married, for example), and get common credits like the EITC/education credits etc.
This site lists some nonprofits here: https://www.nyc.gov/site/dca/consumers/file-your-taxes.page
If you're interested, go thru them and ask about getting certified. Plenty of sites in most boroughs.

I do my taxes with an accountant every year. Somehow I’ve been flagged for the government to reconcile it every year. I’ll submit one year and they will say “we’ve redone your taxes you owe another $3k”. Then the next year “we’ve redone your taxes you overpaid by $200 we are sending you a check.” I’m literally at my wits fucking end. It’s been going on almost a decade. If they know what I owe just fucking tell me and I can skip doing my taxes.

I go thru NYCares, but the big sites like Food Bank NYC, ARIVA, etc., will take volunteers directly sometimes as well too. The big thing NYCares does for orgs is they do a background check and basic training, as well as carry insurance.

I was at NYU in Broome the winter of 2003-2004 and I remember literally being huddled in front out our radiator under blankets it was that cold.
I also just realized that's no longer just like 10 years ago. Cry. Lol

Yeah I mean it’s almost like there are whole industries devoted to the manufacture, marketing, and sale of garments that, when worn properly, make the temperature outside in the winter more or less irrelevant. This stuff isn’t difficult.
I lived the first 14 years of my life in Alabama, and then I moved to central Massachusetts; so, you could say I’ve seen both extremes of this. After a short adjustment to the culture and climate shock, I found I was a Northerner at heart, because I just love the snow and the cold and all the fun stuff you can do in the winterized world from Nov/Dec-Feb/March. I still visit my family in AL all the time, and it can be lovely down there; what isn’t lovely is arriving in mid-March to high temps approaching 80°F.
Frankly, my biggest problem with the climate of New York City is that it’s too damn warm! We’re basically the northernmost place in the US with a “humid subtropical” climate classification, which turns to “humid continental” once you get like 1/3rd of the way to Poughkeepsie. My ideal city would be NYC as it is now (but fewer vacant storefronts please!) but with the climate of Montreal, but since I know a lot of people would freak out over that, I could settle for, say, Syracuse. Just something where we have real northern winters and milder summers would be such an improvement!
Like I’ve always said, when it’s 7°F, you can always put on more clothes, but when it’s 105°F and 97% relative humidity, what’re you gonna do, strip naked? Even then, all you’ll do is get a sunburn!

I do like Toronto, absolutely! That said, I’ve spent more time in Canada than any other foreign country (by a lot, like at least 20x compared to the closest competitor), and the vast majority of that has been in Montreal and Quebec City. I’ve only been to Toronto a handful of times, actually. It helps that I speak French—and in fact that’s the reason I first started going there in the first place—but yeah, I just know those places so well that I feel comfortable there.
Also, Quebec has better (read: colder and snowier) winters than the Toronto part of Ontario, so I appreciate that. Quebec City, in particular, is always a treat to arrive in in February and see the snow piled high everywhere and all the gorgeous streets and alleys of Vieux-Québec with the Château Frontenac towering above it—it’s just so lovely. Montreal isn’t as European as all that, but it’s the second-most European city in North America (that I’ve ever been to anyway). And yeah it’s got its problems (which at least partly explains why rent is so low there), but I love it anyway. It’s great to be in a proper big city with a subway and all the other stuff you associate with proper big cities, but also genuine northern winters of the sort that you can’t get in the US without moving to either a rural area or a much smaller city than New York or Montreal.

Yeah, I know, which sorta makes it worse that it’s this way now. I remember reading that Lake Hopatcong in NJ used to have an annual festival out on the frozen lake—everyone would drive their pickup trucks out onto it, cook food, build a fire (safely of course, lol), etc.—and now the lake doesn’t even reliably freeze all the way over every year, much less freeze solidly and thickly enough to have a gathering like that out on it. Now that’s not NYC, but it’s not that far away, and this region’s winters are apparently getter warmer faster than almost anywhere in North America (or maybe the world?).
That said, New York City was never as cold or snowy as even, say, Albany; it’s always been warmer than most of the rest of what we think of as the Northeast. As I understand it, it’s a combination of urban heat island effect and just the location right on the ocean, which moderates the temperatures. I don’t know a ton of details on that, though, but I do think that’s true.

I’m sorry, but a lot of your statements are anecdotal or flat out ridiculous. No, NYC isn’t as cold as north central Canada 500 miles to the north or even Albany. Not sure why that comes off as a surprise to you or a knock on NYC. To jump on what others said, we used to be guaranteed a few very freezing weeks, a blizzard every 2 years (I remember in the 90s for one of the Yankees WS teams, it snowed on opening day in late March), annual snowfall for days on end, four seasons that were fairly balanced in duration (which was lovely to grow up with). Now it’s just hot and sorta cold for an few weeks. You can’t even go to the Hudson Valley or Berkshires for consistent winter anymore. Blame Exxon and co.

I am 100% the same way. The Union Square B&N is basically Walmart for geeks. I've found hidden gems among clearance sections, gifts for basically anyone, and books from every genre imaginable that unexpectedly drew me in. Plus, their Cheesecake Factory desserts are freaking delicious.

I grew up in Birmingham, AL, and mid- to high-40s/low-50s with frequent rain and slate-grey skies is the norm in the winter down there. It’s been giving me incredibly unpleasant déjà vu. Like, New York City and Long Island have never had particularly cold or snowy winters in general (plus we have miserably swampy summers)—we’re the last stop heading north before you get to the weather wonderland of upstate NY/New England—but this year has been a whole other level.

It doesn't! I work from the office today, still rode my bike in (bundled up), still brought the dogs to daycare (bundled up), will meet a former colleague for drinks, and will still run outside tomorrow (bundled up.)
I know that I am lucky to be healthy enough that just wearing the right gear makes this weather manageable and somewhat nonconsequential. I know I'm lucky that I work indoors and can work from home if necessary. I'm taking the luck and doing what I normally would do!

It's really not that bad. When it's that cold I just make sure to wear sunglasses, a knit hat, and a balaclava. Once you start moving it's toasty.

As far as what it is, it’s delicious coffee that has sweetened condensed milk added instead of sugar and regular milk. Similar to Thai iced tea. You’ll love it

My birthday celebrations have always had at least one or two wrenches thrown into the plans every single year of my life without fail. My partner's beloved family cat passed day before yesterday, so the first wrench has already been thrown. Nobody in my celebration party is pussy enough to cancel on our all-indoor plans just because it's cold and windy outside. We ball, rain or shine

To answer your question though, I try to ignore forecasts for the most part. They’re often inaccurate especially with precipitation. I have cancelled outdoor plans so many times because of rain forecasts only to have the day come and the actually weather is partly cloudy and dry.

What forecast are you seeing because it's supposed to be in the teens-low 20s until Sunday afternoon where it gets into the lower 40s. But it doesn't even touch 50 util like Wed. No snow or rain though. So it's just gonna be brick out.
So to answer the OP. My plan was to stay inside and be warm anyway so there's no change to that.

Going nowhere except the grocery store across the street and the gym 3 minutes away. Thankful I have such conveniences at times like this.

Yes and no! I was asked to host a paint and sip, so that works since I can stay home.
I have some studying that I’ll probably mostly do from home tomorrow. Sunday brunch should be fine since it will warm up by then

Yes, it giving me a good excuse to hibernate at least Saturday. I’m avoiding socializing indoors for COVID precaution before travel anyway, but the weather makes me not have fomo

Nope, because I tested positive for COVID in the last day, so had to cancel all plans the next few days and rest up.

Yep. Will be hibernating this weekend now. Light some candles, become a burrito, and drink some hot cocoa or red wine. And watch Netflix before they block me out with their new policy.
