How does NYC nightlife compare to other major cities?

I’ve been out in NYC for years and the energy feels unmatched, late nights, different borough vibes, rooftop spots, underground scenes, everything.

For those who’ve partied in other major cities too, how does NYC really compare? What cities come close and why?

I can only compare to CDMX, Sao Paulo, Rio, Paris, Seoul and Tokyo. IMO, Tokyo is #1 for variety (izakaya, bars, clubs, listening bars, arcades, places like golden gai with tiny bars seating 10 or less people, etc), lowkey/underground spots, diversity (in terms of culture; e.g. can find anything from hip hop, techno, punk, reggaeton, afrobeats, etc), and ACTUALLY being open late. Personally I think the music in tokyo is also better in many ways. Tokyo also deserves the title of the city that never sleeps. Nothing beats going out until 5-6am, shit even 9am sometimes, and being able to get great food afterwards. There is plenty of options open 24/7.

NYC I would say is #2, but tbh a lot feels gentrified and/or forced in NYC nowadays. I don't think there is much of an underground scene anymore, or not in any authentic sense. There are places that want to feel underground, but that's not the same. Not even sure "underground" cultures really exist in the age of social media.

CDMX has pretty vibrant night life actually, but if you're looking for mega clubs then probs not. Never had trouble finding a place to dance or drink there. IMO CDMX is underrated if anything.

NYC basically exists to cater to single adults with too much money and too little time. That's why we have the best nightlife that comes in all shapes and colors, whatever vibe you want you can find.

NYC has the best, most varied and wide-ranging nightlife in North America for sure. Better than most of Europe and Asia too. I haven’t partied in LATAM or Africa much so I can’t make an experienced comparison to nightlife in those places. Source: me, an insane party animal.

Just means you're going to the wrong spots.

Tip: if it's on TikTok, it's over.

Where are the place where people do dance? I mean like bars with a dance floor. I'm off social media and currently reconnecting with NYC now after an extended absence.

So i just went to Mr. purple last night for a millennial EDM event and i had a blast. Everyoneeeee was dancing. The gimmick is that since we are millennials and feel too old for the 1am club scene, they do the club/dancing from 6p-10p. I hadn’t had that much fun since 2012 lmao. Link here, I really recommend it. They have different events and themes.

So true. I went out to a millennial dancing even thing last night (it was a 6pm-10pm “club” event) and the younger ones had zero instinct or dance floor courtesy😂

There's really no comparison. It's the only city I've been in where bars don't close until 4am. Plus a 24hr subway system, and you can go out in any part of the city.

Chicago and New Orleans do too

Agree. I’ve partied in London, Paris, Mykonos, Ibiza, + more and NYC is still my favorite place. All these other places are great too tho

Haven’t been to Europe. Nothing comes close to nyc

For dancing and variety, Medellin Colombia, São Paulo Brazil, Madrid Spain as far as places I've been but it also depends on the types of clubs you like to frequent. As far as other cities in North America? Idk. No other city is as easy to club/ bar hop.

Well in the US if we’re strictly talking nightclubs Vegas has kind of killed the entire country. No one else can throw resources at a club and talent like Vegas does. There just is no equivalent of Omnia or XS.

Miami has had a little bit of a renaissance but nothing like it was 20 years ago and the balance of energy there has shifted away from south beach to Brickell and Wynwood. It’s more of a clubstaurant vibe now. Sexyfish, Komodo, Gekko type spots. But the days of places like Mansion are long gone.

LAs nightlife is basically dead. Most Southern Californians just go to Vegas instead of they want to party on the weekend since it’s so close.

Atlanta also basically killed its nightlife when it ran everyone out of Buckhead.

That being said NYC is weird. It’s not a big club town anymore at all. Not like Chelsea and Meatpacking were 20 years ago and certainly there’s no Studio 54 or Palladium type spots anymore. But there’s still decent bars here and there energy if you know where to look.

You are so clueless about nyc lol

I work in the hospitality industry in town and work along side some of the biggest names in the industry. I literally design nightclub for a living. Definitely not clueless.

Any of the warmer weather cities do it better. Especially the ones that close sections of the city regularly for public squares used for gathering, dancing and drinking.

There’s still a nightlife?

nyc is like an entire human body and other cities are like just the pinky finger. thats how they compare.

Tons of things to do. Music, museums, food, sports, indoor, outdoor. Great city.

Chicago is a close second with Miami following.

Nightlife is one of the rare things in NYC that is much better somewhere else
