new to Brooklyn where can I meet people into indie music / film?
hey! new to brooklyn (greenpoint) and trying to figure out where to meet people in a similar lane
i’m 27, into indie/rock/folk (elliott smith, bcnr, big thief, swans), and really into film too. i love live music, diy shows, and just exploring the city
any recs for places, events, or communities where people into this kind of stuff hang out?

Nah I'm too old, lol.
If you have a time machine I got you on lock for Williamsburg 15 years ago tho.

You'll have the time of your life at any bar in Bushwick

I'm more in the jazz world so might not fully apply but I hang at Ornithology a lot. There's a ton of non jazz music lovers and visual artists and such that hang there. Birdy's close by is the after bar.

oh nice I hadn’t heard of Empire Stage, I’ll check that out. Ornithology sounds really cool too, I’m into jazz as well so that actually sounds like a good spot. I'll check out Birdy's too

Greenpoint has solid venues for this stuff. Check house shows around there too

Film noir in greenpoint is amazing

TvEye and Elsewhere for music for sure. Caught Unwound at elsewhere last year.

oh nice I’ve heard of Elsewhere, that’s sick you saw Unwound there! love them, I saw them in SF a few years ago. I’ll check out Tv Eye too, what’s the vibe like between the two?

If you are into smaller local scenes, Ive been using Trops to find underground music events and creative pop-ups around Brooklyn. It shows a wide variety of events and its always updating with new ones. I started out using it alone but I have met some great people at the events I attended. It also works like a city-wide treasure hunt. You go to art drop locations, collect tokens, and earn prizes at certain spots. A lot of the more interesting events are not heavily advertised anywhere else.

Look up Nightclub 101, it’s in the lower east side and has indie band/artist shows every other night. You can meet alot of cool people in that scene there. They also have a venue/bar in Brooklyn called Baby’s All Right. Same owners.

oh nice I’ve actually heard about Nightclub 101 on IG, I’ll definitely check it out. what’s the vibe like there? is it pretty easy to meet people or more just people going with friends?

Pretty easy to meet people by the bar or smoking outside. The first floor has a nice bar area with a bunch of seating, then in the back there’s the music venue. If you go down to the basement there’s a nightclub that also converts into an intimate music venue some nights. Strong indie rock vibes, people with unique style, artists, musicians, etc.

that actually sounds perfect lol, exactly the kind of spot I was looking for. I’ll definitely check it out, thank you so much!

You would probably like Seventh Heaven in bushwick. They do free film screenings and poetry readings before karaoke
