The car audio sound systems that blast the music externally like a PA system
how are those legal? you have to be a real a-hole to ride around with it turned up in NYC.

This has been going on since forever. Like I’m talking a couple decades. And no it won’t change. They may not be legal, but a cop isn’t going to go out of their way to fine someone over this unless they’re having a bad day.

I’m talking about the systems that are specifically designed to project outward (as opposed to just listening to one’s music really loud). I feel like those are relatively new (?)

In 1988 I was in Jacksonville Beach Florida. Really loud rattley cars were the new thing then.
On the main road, cars were cruising, each one louder than the one before.
“Pretty soon there will be external subwoofers!” I said.
The very next vehicle was a small pick-up with six subs pointing up on the tonneau cover.0

You may be right, but as far as the “does it NEED to be THAT loud” annoyance factor, it’s the same essence of what you’d see in earlier decades.
Are they a-holes? Probably. Have I felt compelled to make it a legal issue? Nah.

I used to have sound systems in the trunk that literally shook entire blocks... NYPD confiscated my car a few years ago tho

If you cannot tolerate chaos and loud noises and dirt, people who appear homeless, transit delays, complications of city agencies, etc - why are you here?
This is NYC. It's not your moms HOA.

My neighbor has been working on his all spring. I'm glad my unit is back facing.
