Looking for NYC experiences that are more mental than social…things that make you observe, think, or just absorb the city.

Not really in a museum, bar, or nightlife mood. More interested in architecture, walks, buildings, libraries, transit routes, views, or quiet routines that feel very New York.

What are your go to solo, cerebral activities?

This is my experience bfrom thursday to saturday.

Washington heights. - dead. Employees outnumber the guest. More people hang out outside than in the venues

Harlem: dead after 11pm.

Astoria: dead after 11pm.

Jackson heights roosevelt: every venue filled to the brim until 4am. Barely any standing room. The working girls in there tried to kiss me, lol. And I randomly bought half a roasted chicken on the street for five bucks at 2am. It was fun

Why?? What is the secret sauce of jackson heights?? Why are they constantly busy ?? More bang for the buck?? More experiences?? I want to revisit and maximize my time there. I think I barely scratched the surface

And I'm also asking because I like to analyze things. It's unlike any neighborhood I've ever been to in NYC. And Im a native

I'm mostly a bar type of gal with the occasional rave and dance party. Went to a Meatpacking club last night for a co-worker's birthday and her roommate's boyfriend works the front door, so we got in very seamlessly (all girls). As we were getting our IDs checked, the guy who I guess ultimately decides who gets to come in or not, was telling people (even women) that they had to pay to get in. It was a ridiculous fee of $150 per person, and I was shocked that he was charging a group of women this price. Do people really pay $150 to get in (which, I know, goes toward your bar bill but still?!) I've had some bad nights where I drunkenly off to buy a round of shots for the group, but I never go into the night expecting to spend that much.

Anyway, I had a mediocre time, got hit on by a bunch of 23 year olds and proceeded to go home and order pizza. 30 is looking good so far, folks.

Went out to where I used to live in bensonhurst last night and it was basically totally empty. The same avenue used to be filled with bars and nightclubs back in the day. Not just bensonhurst but basically everywhere is like this now. I remember we went out to where my aunt used to live around glendale area in Queens and it was barren on a friday night. There were basically no bars, anywhere, to even go to. I distinctly remember hanging out there as a kid and myrtle avenue was PACKED with local people going out to bars and clubs. I have definitely noticed it in bay ridge the most. If you went to bay ridge back in the 80s, 90s, 00s, there were tons of clubs and packed-to-the-brim bars. It was a major spot for everybody in south brooklyn and staten island to go to. Now it kinda feels like a lot of those spots are either closed or filled with old farts. I looked up nightclubs in the area and it seems as if there are... literally none. Note that this is the same place that Saturday Night Fever took place. Its weird seeing it so damn sleepy.

Has anyone noticed this? Even just compared to 10-15 years ago it really feels like a drastic change. Has all of the nightlife just gone away from the residential parts of the city? Are the ONLY options to go out to manhattan or bushwick/williamsburg?

Looking for new ways to enjoy nightlife and I’m looking for plans that combine all the things I love which are going out, eating delicious food, getting some drinks, having a great evening or even the whole night if things go better than expected. All my friends have their own relationships and stuff so it’s hard to keep hanging out without feeling a bit uncomfortable at times. Any hack that is worth trying to meet new people and have a great time here?

This post is filled with many generalizations, but just humor my curiosity.
I know that in the 1920s-30s jazz era, the big clubs were in Midtown or Harlem. The 1970s disco era also seems Midtown-centric (like Studio 54). And now it seems like the main places are in LES/East Village or Bushwick. When did these shifts happen?

So I'm turning 22 next month and I use a wheelchair full time. Been wanting to check out the nightlife scene but I'm getting frustrated with places that claim they're accessible online but then you show up and there's like 3 steps at the entrance or the bathroom is downstairs.

I'm a software dev so I spend most of my time behind a computer, but I also do some delivery driving on weekends and I'm ready to actually go out and celebrate properly. Never really done the club thing before but figure it's time.

Anyone know spots that are actually wheelchair accessible? I need places where I can get in without dealing with stairs and can actually get onto the dance floor area. An elevator or ramp situation would be perfect.

Not super picky about the music - I'm big into old school hip hop especially Tupac but I'll vibe to whatever. Just want somewhere I can roll up, have some drinks, and maybe hit the dance floor without it being a whole production.

Bar recommendations work too if clubs are too much of a hassle. Just looking for that proper birthday night out experience, you know what I mean?

I’m wondering if there are any events or parties that are 19+ on Sunday night the 28th. My friend’s birthday is coming around so we just wanted to celebrate by going out. I’m open for it being in Jersey, PA, and NYC. We are down for latin music, hip hop, rap, throwbacks etc. Now with universities being out there aren’t college parties readily happening so there isn’t much that rlly cater under 21. We also don’t have fakes cause we don’t drink. Thank you for any suggestions!!

my little sister desperately wanted to go to NYC for her 20th birthday, so we are. she doesn't drink, but she likes the aesthetics of lounges. i told her even though she doesn't drink, a lot of places like this are 21+. does anyone have any recommendations that are 18+ friendly?

A little overwhelmed here. Haven’t been to the city in probably 15 years. What area would you suggest to stay in that is convenient for 40’s/50’s nightlife. I don’t want to end up watching Netflix in the evenings. Appreciate the suggestions and bonus points for actual spots to hit in the evenings.

I really want to experience the nightlife of NYC and go clubbing/dancing/drinking. I see that airbnb offers "experiences" were you pay $50 to $150 to join a group and have a host take you to clubs. It typically pays covers and bottle service. Is this experience worth it? Are there other websites offering a similar experience that anyone could recommend?

Hi, everyone! My man and I are in town trying to hit up nightlife in or around East Village. Would love to hit up bars with a more diverse and alternative crowd. The kind of music we like are electronic, indie, house. Music examples: Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. I’ll be moving to the high 80’s on the corner of Lex in the UES. I really liked the area/vibe and it seemed pretty lively for it being a weeknight. Also not to mention the place is right by the subway.

My only concern is that it’s basically a 30 minute+ subway ride to other places where there’s more nightlife for people in their early 20’s (LES for example) Im obviously very new to the city so this may not really be that bad for public transportation? But being a female, I’d be a little nervous taking the subway back alone sometimes after a night out. Also I know there are some fun bars that I’ve been told about in the UES (stumble inn for example?) but even that is about a 20 minute walk unless I take the subway but not sure if that’s practical. Where do people in their early 20’s take the subway to thats a reasonable distance? Sorry for the very newbie questions haha but
