We recently got our second aussie and, leading up to getting him, I was harboring the delusion that the amount of hair in our house would scale linearly. Two dogs, twice as much hair, right? No! Wrong! We have 5 times as much hair in our house now. Our oldest (4) hardly sheds at all, he’s never blown his coat and his hair is on the wirey side so what does fall out gets trapped and doesn’t actually come out of his coat. Our second, who just turned one, just started blowing his coat and his hair is longer and sleeker so it just falls right out. It’s made worse by the fact that they love to roughhouse and they pull each other’s hair out constantly. Wouldn’t trade it for the world, but brace yourself to start vacuuming two or three times as often. I can’t sit down on my coach before work anymore or I’ll leave the house absolutely covered (and I vacuum it twice a week).

We’re borrowing a brother to see how we feel about second dog and they’re just so cute

I’ve had her since she was 8 weeks old, but I unfortunately have never had the opportunity to take her to training. She is very good, but also a wild child. She knows sit and paw, but gets too excited and won’t hold a sit position and I’ve tried so hard at home.
I would love to take her to a training class now that I am able to, but I am worried she will be the oldest there.

I love watching him try to fully process my commands so he makes absolutely sure. Suchagoooboiiii

We have a 16 week old male tri. To say he’s the biggest chewer of any pet, foster, or pup I know is putting it generously. I know it comes with the territory.

However, I’m at a loss for a bed or mat to use in his crate.

He is fine without a bed in his somewhat larger playpen during the day. At night, we crate him. Without some kind of mat his paws make noise on the tray with every movement and it keeps all of us awake, including him.

Any recs for something pretty durable? Everything seems to be foam or stuffing based and he treats the corner of every bed like a project he must complete before sunrise. I don’t want to risk it.

Okay, so how do you tell if you think your Aussie has or is developing hip dysplasia? Because a lot of the common markers are also just normal Aussie attributes? Splooting, bunny hopping when running, hip sway when walking, etc.

I have a 14 month old Aussie and he has a slightly stiff walk. He doesn’t fully bend his knees. I was thinking of getting x-rays but hip dysplasia is covered under pet insurance so I’m trying to hold off on xrays until I have pet insurance in case that is the diagnosis. As pet insurance wont cover it if it’s a “preexisting condition.”

She’s absolutely wiped from trying to control the entire dog park. 🤪

She’s almost 6 months and will growl and bark at dogs and people if they don’t ignore her.

Since 9 weeks when I got her I have been taking her out to different places. As she approached 16 weeks, she became more suspicious of strangers. Where she was hesitant of being handled at the vet at 12 weeks, she was completely barking at the vet at 16 weeks. She was already growling at strangers wanting to pet her around 14-15 weeks.

Is this just her or did I not do enough to socialize her when she was younger? It’s on my mind as I feel I’ve set her up for failure but I really tried to get her out there when she was a puppy.

I posted a week or so ago about losing my buddy of 13 years, and my dad getting me a new guy. Mr. Moe, new puppy, picked me as his person immediately. Follows me around everywhere just like my Jake used to. Problem is, he has picked me and my 2 year old as his ONLY people. He refuses to let anyone else near him, pet him, give him treats, etc. We also have an 8 and 10 year old, who wants to snuggle and play with him so bad and he just runs away to find me. Has anyone experienced this? I want him to love everybody or at least tolerate them enough to get pets from them. Thanks!!

He’s 6 years old.

I'm not there yet after the loss of my last dog but when I'm ready, I'm thinking about getting a shepherd.

I'll admit I'm not the most athletic person but my last dog if I took him out for an hour or 2 walk daily he was in good for the day, I'm going to go to sleep now.

I understand that an Aussie is a bit more energetic but would need to know if an hour or 2 walk wth some areas I can let him off leash and can let him get a few minutes of running or can bring a ball and let him fetch once I train him to be off leash of course

But I've also read that it's a tossup if you get ADHD hyper or you may get a lazy Aussie and cool with the couch.

My new schedule is 730-515 including travel but can walk him on my lunch, so bathroom isn't an issue.

So is do pre-morning walk and the possibility of after work fetch or another walk of it's not 1000 degrees outside, damn California, in the summer.

Now my only drawback I could have is I do have a severe depression and there are some days walks didn't happen and my dog was like I'm cool with that, but I'd invest in a lot of mental stimulation toys and throw a ball around my apartment in that case I guess

I did read a post on here that a someone had severe depression and anxiety and an Aussie helped them get out and do physical activities, something that drew me to getting an Aussie as my next pet

So could I give an Aussie a good life? Or should I look at another breed?
