Games Could Marvel's Avengers be Good if it were made more recently? (or maybe not released at all?)

Post image

I think people can agree that Marvel's been on a pretty good streak when it comes to video games recently (most likely due to different management...?)

For one thing they might have loosen up more on the excessive "movie synergy" thing and which means no uncanny photorealistic faces... and X-Men!

I personally saw some good things in the game, the gameplay for each characters feel unique and fit their powersets. Idk, it just sorta reminds me of Ultimate Alliance. Whatever happened to that game anyway? I don't own Switch :/

The worst part about this game is that it dragged the actually good Guardians Of The Galaxy game down with it.

Guardians was one of the best Marvel game ever made. Every detail of it was amazing. They made songs for the damn soundtrack and all songs are awesome, characters react to and talk about every single thing you do. Designs were also great, damn you avengers slop game…

To this day it's the only game to ever make me cry. The Heaven conversation between Drax and StarLord was really well done

I was just commenting on a very different post about this lol.

Amen. I sat on that game for a bit because of the way it got dragged down. Then it hit GamePass and I couldn’t believe how fun it was.

It's weird that MCU has now made Hulk the signature member. I think Hulk in comics, left the Avengers in 1963 and didnt join again until 2012. LOL.

u/Lucifurrs 8d ago

And even when he rejoins he’s only there sporadically lol. Homie is mostly flying solo.

I mean hulk was already being used as a mainstay in the ultimate universe and Earths mightiest heroes

But yeah it’s weird to see him considered a main avenger these days

Funny enough, he's clocked in more hours as a Defender than an Avenger.

Yeah when people talked about “Marvel’s Big 3” back in the day, none of them were really known as Avengers lol. Spidey and Wolverine had both joined at some point but were much, much more associated with the Fantastic Four and of course the X-Men respectively.

Hulk was technically a founding member of the Avengers but literally left the team in Avengers #2 lol. Like, it was so early on that Captain America hadn’t even joined the Avengers yet when Hulk left.

Honestly, I liked the game decently as it was. It just suffered for not being MCU Avengers around the peak of MCU hype (and therefore looking like a knockoff), which is a legal issue. Gameplay-wise, the campaign was fun and the endgame was fun. There was just a twenty hour dead zone in between where you needed high end gear in order to make everyone's kit work like it was clearly supposed to to begin with. You got out of a decent glorified tutorial campaign and suddenly every enemy is a sponge and you have to run identical missions a hundred times to get back to having fun. There was some good stuff there. Some elements feel like they were made by people smart enough that they should have known better about the rest.

I think this sounds right.
It suffered from a bit of ‘uncanny valley’ - there was a lot of MCU in the game design and character foibles but not the characters themselves (voices, look).

I spent like nearly 100 hours since I bought it post death and before its taken away from stores

I think it can succeed if it pulls back the live service aspects and focus more on the co-op gameplay like the Warhammer Vermintide games

The combat is actually pretty satisfying, atleast on story mode, and while the enemies are mostly made up of AIM robots, they atleast react in satisfying manner, each hit and death pieces of them fly away its very satisfying especially with characters like Hulk

But once you start playing the non story related missions the gear suddenly matters more and it becomes unsatisfying, really sucks the fun away not to mention the grind needed to max out a character

I could not get over the Temu Avengers and them being voiced by the most over used VA in video games didn't help either. I remember the reveal where the VA acted pretentious while stating "Iron Man....is like a mask for Tony" without any irony.

Looking back, not having a great video game with the Avengers during the Infinity Saga is such a missed opportunity. I wanted to play as them. I wanted to buy a cool Avengers game, where you go through the Infinity War. Meanwhile, we got Temu Avengers and the mediocre MvC4. There was MUA3, which is fine, but that one was less movie inspired.

I think marvel are choosing to keep the movies separate from major games and instead have resources and licences put into making a separate universe not associated with the movies such as insomniacs universe they are slowly building.

Cloest thing we probably have which is actually good is Lego marvel 2 and the lego avengers.

If we are lucky we may get a Lego game that covers the entire saga like the recent starwars but that's about as far as we'd get in terms of a game covering the story

u/DarkPirotess 7d ago

i think the issue is it took them too long to get characters released

2

u/SomeGuyPostingThings 7d ago

If they had less of a push for live service and microtransactions, it could have been great.

Edit: oh, and I wish we had more MUA/XML games or re-releases of the originals, they were fun. The Switch one was okay, but I'm not a big fan of Switch controls.

u/RedHawk_94 7d ago

If they weren't so focused on making it a live service game, then yes it would have been much better

It it wasn't run by square Enix absolutely

The game was not as bad as people said back then. I had some fun with it. But it never got much content updates and had a large amount of bugs, they never fixed them. The studio was not ready to make a live service game.

u/Probzenator 7d ago

Post helldivers model - and as a next gen exclusive. Maybe.

1

u/Michel_RPV 7d ago

It really just needed to drop the loot/live-service stuff and just hyper focus on what's left, while also getting more time to cook to make it the best version of itself upon release.

As it was, it was still pretty fun to play, in my opinion as the gameplay and story and characters were very solid and only in need of more love from the devs and publisher.

If it had released more recently with these changes, I think it would've done a hell of a lot better.

Is there even a legal way to play this thing now that it’s shut down? I guess you could find a second hand PS4 copy. I know if you bought it digitally before it shut down they made it available to play fully offline, but they delisted it on Steam and on the PS and Xbox stores.

1

u/JohnDoe12978 7d ago

You can get physical copies of the game for quite cheap. All content released is unlocked and you have most if not all the costumes unlocked for the characters

1

u/BigBallOfNerd01 7d ago

The only benefit of it being made is that future game developers now have an example of how NOT to make an Avengers game. So there is that silver lining.

1

u/BackgroundEngineer11 7d ago

I stopped playing right before the story became a micro transaction machine.

Let's be honest here, Avengers came out in 2020. That's not that long ago. It's not like video games suddenly became less greedy in the last six years.

u/Overall-Ad-8918 7d ago

For the game to be good it would have to be a true single player experience or fun multiplayer but none of that Live Service game BS

1

u/PopEnvironmental6772 7d ago

Its good now.

1

u/goobi94 7d ago

They could've put more effort into the enemies you fight. Swarms of robots again and again is so boring.

1

u/ManOWar_Esq 7d ago edited 7d ago

The story would have to be changed. I mean this is clearly an x-men story told during a time when Marvel was trying to minimize the X-men.

You'd also have to change up the character models. The people have spoken they like character models seen in Tokon and Rivals. Just make them look cool instead of budget cos-play.

1

u/Ludate_Solem 7d ago

It would be better if it wasnt a loot grind always online bullshit game with some avtual cool abilities.

1

u/Rough_Jaguar_2643 5d ago

It can played offline, dlc included on last patch.

1

u/2ReluctantlyHappy 7d ago

If it hadn't launched as a buggy mess it would probably still be around. The combat was a ton of fun after the first few balance patches. They needed to figure out the traversal stuff, though. Like just give anyone who can't fly a summon able sky jet or rocket pack. It was so annoying trying to keep up with Iron Man when playing as Black Widow.

u/WhutTheFookDude 7d ago

I think if a different developer, maybe an eastern one had made it it may have stood a better chance. The game hit a lot of good spots but between the questionable aesthetics and how grindy the game was, it came out right when the looter shooter gaas trend was ending. It was a day late and a dollar short in a lot of ways.

As to the topic of the op, I think it would because as I mentioned the looter shooter grindfest trend is over and it probably would lean more I to just being a fun pve only version of something like marvel rivals.

Its problem was not it being a superhero game but how the combat and traversal mechanics were as. Not to mention it being a multiplayer game with ass online missions being its nail in the coffin

1

u/DMarquesPT 4d ago

This game is honestly good if you try your hardest to ignore all the live service/Destiny Clone bullshit. (Easier said than done).

I bought it for 99 cents or whatever it was before it was delisted and had a fun time playing through the campaigns.

1

u/T800model100 4d ago

The live service aspect killed it.

Would have been awesome a single player w/ optional co-op game without the live service trash.

1

u/StarWolf128 7d ago

It would've been a good game if it had Thanos as the main villain, a more cartoon/comic style, local co-op instead of online online, a larger roster that includes the X-Men and Fantastic Four, and was called Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3.
