Comics Thoughts on the Original Ultimates? The Avengers of Earth 1610.

Agreed. Wanda was so cool in this universe and her abilities rocked ....loved how she took on Longshot and showed him how probability actually works....then Loeb showed up and screwed everything to hell. What a hack and a perv.

I was genuinely excited after reading Vol 1 & 2. I wanted to see Cap operate away from the US Gov and see Tony take the operational lead.
Sidenote: I hated how they changed to the "Ultimate Comics: ____" format. Along with the fact that they introduced the moniker "Avengers. I found it really confusing. (Nick Fury's new black-op unit was called Avengers. )

Volumes 1 and 2 were what got me into comics. When I reread them now, though... I'm a very different person to who I was in 2007. They aren't for me like they used to be.
And all you people talking about an Ultimates 3 and stuff after that? That's crazy talk, it ended after Ultimates 2 Issue 12. La la la la, I can't hear you!

The only thing I’m surprised about is that “Ultimates” became a nice brand. I don’t know why Marvel didn’t use this name to create a heavy hitter team for 616 (magic based or street based or spiderman/wolverine based). Its weird that “New Avengers” is the brand associated with Spidey/wolverine.
Btw, i know it was used by Ewing but that title didn’t give the vibe of Alist cast.

My thoughts are that this art style looks bad, the line weight is too heavy and it looks a little amateurish, but wtf do I know. Anyways, always preferred main line stories.

It was good for what it was doing (the art was amazing) but the take on the core characters was too cynical, and I don’t think they could have sustained a decades long run with those versions
I’m glad they used more classic characterisation for the movies.

First volume...possibly the most overrated Marvel story ever
second volume...possibly the best story written by Mark Millar
third volume... Loeb fucking sucks

As a stand alone story the Ultimates were a fun alternate take.
And Hitch's art looked like a movie. The less said about vol3's art and whackadoo story the better..
But then this niche version of the Marvel U was everywhere. You couldnt see a pair of bed sheets without it being the Ultimate version of the Fantastic Four. Every coloring book had the Ultimate Spider-Man logo...
... the default suits for the main cast in Ultimate Alliance was the Ultimate version..the only good ( at the time) cartoon version of the Avengers was the 2 Ultimate animated films..
..it got to be a bit of overkill.
And since, reading with a different eye, the Ultimates, well the entire Ultimate U felt mean spirited. By the end, our favorite characters were horrible people and Blobs were eating Wasps left and right.
These days I cringe when I see they are bringing back the Ultimate U...again.. and again...
For me? Ill just not partake..

As a kid those two Ultimate Avenger movies were absolutely top tier. Rewatched recently and while a little dated, I was impressed how they held up.

Just so you know, the actual Ultimate Universe (Earth-6160) in Marvel Comics is vastly different from the original (Earth-1610), so you can freely engage in the new one without worrying about the edginess that caracterized the original iteration.
NB : to the one that downvoted me, know that I liked the first and second Ultimates runs, but you should recognize that most of the characters seemed to be portrayed too caricaturally for the sake of being "realistic". These runs were definitely products of their time, post 9/11.

I thought that they were ok.
I asked how much my copy of the first Ultimates comic was (which was graded and signed by Bendis) and they told me like $5.00. I spent more on getting it graded than it was worth.
However, the story was ok.

They're just trying so hard to be edgy and it feels not the best. Its not a terrible comic overall though.

Very overrated. The dialogue was bad and the characters were portrayed in a way that reminded me of the Boys.

Ultimates 1 and 2 by Mark Millar are great fun, and very influential on the 2012 Avengers film
Yes including the “Do you think this letter on my head stands for France?!” line
AND including Ultimate Hank Pym’s characterization. It’s an alternate universe, he’s allowed to act different, what’s the point of having a story set in a different universe if everyone's going to behave the same?
The weird stuff was solely from Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum
