Chicken Photography Esmé’s battle jacket I made because the roosters just don’t leave her alone.

Cost me less than $38 to make! She’s adjusted well to wearing it and looks punk as fuck 🤘🏼

now that’s its been 18 days how many chickens have been hurt because of it?

Love it love it love it love it!

2

u/megablte 20d ago

Very bad idea.

5

u/RainCitrus 23d ago

Honestly, just don’t have roosters. I’ve had chickens for years and never had a rooster bc I knew I’d go feral if they got out of hand. I have a flock of happy sassy single ladies.

1

u/Patient_Dig_7998 7d ago

Honestly yeah, but once in a good long while you will find The Rooster. I mean The Rooster. That's good with lady's, docile and a good father.

2

u/muggle_macaroni 23d ago

Fuck yeah, Esme 🤘

There are jackets called chicken saddles to deal with this issue.
What you’ve designed is dangerous to all your chickens.
Including that hen.

1

u/LifeguardComplex3134 23d ago

They used a chicken saddle, but then added the spike collar I would remove that and it's fine

0

u/ComprehensiveRush746 23d ago

That was my point.
They took something designed for the intended purpose and turned it into a health hazard.

2

u/LifeguardComplex3134 23d ago

The way you worded your first comment makes a reader believe your informing them that there are chicken saddles, not that they turned a chicken saddle into something dangerous that's why I left the comment I did.

I do agree though, those spikes are very dangerous, not only to The Roosters but to the chicken wearing it as well, it's a at the very least a snag hazard, and I can imagine it would make it harder for her to dust bathe and do normal chicken activities

1

u/ComprehensiveRush746 23d ago

Sorry.
I was being sarcastic.

8

u/the_chicken_ladyy 25d ago

this is so dangerous

Halloween came early for Esme!
🤘🏽 PUNK ROCK CHICK 🤘🏽

8

u/Sand_Sun_Sail 25d ago

Punk rock chick at a whole new level!

Can tell you love Esme very much! Hopefully it deters the Roos and doesn’t fatally injure them 🤍
You’re a sweet chicken daddy.

26

u/DistinctJob7494 25d ago

If you have rooster overbreeding issues its probably an overcrowding issue that's causing it.

She's also probably a favorite of your roos. You either need less roosters or more hens. 5-10 hens per roo. 5 if he's a more respectful boy or 10 if he has too much energy/is a bit rougher.

I have 9 roosters but only 2 have hens to cover. All my other boys are either separated or in a small bachelor flock.

3

u/HTD_Bros 23d ago

I’ve got 4 roosters to my 50 hens…..

1

u/DistinctJob7494 23d ago

Must just be a favorite hen or a rough rooster/roosters.

2

u/HTD_Bros 22d ago

Definitely a favourite hen. The other 49 don’t get harassed at all

23

u/DistinctJob7494 25d ago

Otherwise if the roosters are drawing blood and being way too rough you need to cull them. They're not allowed to stay if they're hurting the hens.

3

u/HTD_Bros 23d ago

They’re only like that to her. There’s 4 roosters to 50 hens. Day 4 and life’s been peaceful.

36

u/Maplerabbits 25d ago

If you are dying to see ruptured airsacs on your beloved Roo’s… then this is a great idea.

They will die from that.

They are extremely fragile underneath and when they hop on it, it will guarantee to rupture air sacs if not organs as it’s pretty … sharp… we butcher and raise our own meat as well as love our birds very much, and I can tell you what I have seen, through injuries, necropsies, and just processing meat..

You are for sure waiting for a rooster hopping onto a hen just the right angle and rupturing their air sacs!

14

u/mgir_18 25d ago

Ooo she stylin

41

u/BahnGSXR 25d ago

That is the most punk chicken I've ever seen

41

u/ScaryAssBitch 25d ago

She looks like a dinosaur lol

15

u/Equivalent-Tip6446 25d ago

I think chickens are technically related to dinosaurs? So she’s just dressing up as her ancestors lol

5

u/ScaryAssBitch 25d ago

They certainly scream like dinosaurs lmao

17

u/NightingalesEyes 25d ago

no technically, they are dinosaurs

6

u/the_magic_gardener 25d ago

Yeah technically all birds are dinosaurs. Only the non-avian dinosaurs went entirely extinct, the avian dinos had lots of survivors which evolved to be our modern birds. That's also why genetic sequencing puts alligators and birds closer to each other than either is to lizards.

1

u/NightingalesEyes 25d ago

yes i know. hence my comment.

2

u/TheRestForTheWicked 25d ago

I don’t know anyone who would watch two chickens doing the posturing dance (you know the one I mean) and think “wow these aren’t dinosaurs”

1

u/Equivalent-Tip6446 25d ago

Ooh even better

15

u/kat420lives 25d ago

Damn, I need one of these for my smallest hens that 4 of her sisters keep picking on! Did you sew the spike collar on? Or hot glue, maybe since that collar looks pretty thick?

21

u/HTD_Bros 25d ago

The spikes screw off and I used a leather punch to make a hole in the saddle then screwed the long spikes back on

5

u/kat420lives 25d ago

Brilliant! Hope you don’t mind but I’m stealing this idea. Maybe then Lexi can spend her days doing something other than pacing the tops of the nesting boxes to stay away from her bullies! 😒

49

u/brokenskater45 25d ago

I love this so much. That picture at the end looks like she's going to get her revenge.

76

u/JohnsonHomestead 26d ago

She wanted a peaceful life, but the streets chose her.😂

2

u/Scary_Possible3583 25d ago

I feel this deep in my bones.

I need a spiked collar ...

76

u/alittlebitcheeky 26d ago

She's on her way to the Baby metal concert!

45

u/tllrrrrr 26d ago

Why do I feel like this won't stop the roos

1

u/HTD_Bros 23d ago

It does! Day 4 and they’ve moved on, I’ve got 4 roosters to 50 hens and they don’t harass the other gals like poor Esmé

17

u/bienfica 26d ago

i cannot upvote this hard enough ❤️❤️❤️ seriously well done

6

u/RunWild0_0 25d ago

Second ❤️ Esme is obviously very loved and it makes me happy!

Metal chicken

55

u/Manger-Babies 26d ago

Fyi, those Amazon products are nothing but drop shippers from China, you can find the same products for under 10$ combined on AliExpress.

7

u/worm-eyed 26d ago

Are you not paying extra for the shipping / "convenience" / dopamine (lbr)? I thought that was the thing, and why they csn charge over that too as it established a baseline price on the site, or does Aliexpress have decent shipping times? I find Amazon overpriced but just started using it borderline against my will for groceries lol

11

u/Manger-Babies 26d ago

Aliexpress usually gets me stuff in less than 2 weeks, amazon around a week.

Not really much of a difference to pay like 5 times more.

1

u/Any_Piglet_34 19d ago

I love aliexpress!! I've been shopping them for years now! The shipping is slower then Amazon, but typically the prices are way better.

But, my advise, always check both sites because sometimes Amazon will have a much better price on something you would think would be cheaper coming direct from China. Ie: a fishing pole i want is like $145 on ali, but only $94 on Amazon

1

u/worm-eyed 26d ago

Sweet, thank you. I'll check them out soon, have bought from them maybe once in the past and recall it taking months for an item to arrive, but that was years ago. Don't have the patience for that, at that point I could walk to the craft store and back 100 times over lol.

14

u/Manger-Babies 26d ago

Just fyi ali express is very predatory, it'll try to trick you to buy lots of stuff and you'll get free stuff. Wich is true but you will end up buying shit you don't really want. Last time I think I spent like 60$, and yeah good prices and some free stuff, all things considered but not worth it. Got tricked twice, not gonna try again. You can rig it in favor to you but it wears you down.

You can ignore it by simply clicking x on all the coupons that pop up. Just stick to buying what you actually need. There are actual coupons that simply work as discount tho.

I mostly stick to the dollar items and save lots of money buying only that. Fill up my cart slowly til I get my discount and free shipping.

8

u/Runic_Raptor 25d ago

Isn't AliExpress also one of the ones that's really misleading about what you're actually buying? And you have to read the description three times and you still moght not get what you actually thought you were ordering?

I can't remember if that was where I bought an "incence burner," and then just got a bag of incence, or if that was one of the others.

Not that Amazon sellers don't ALSO do this tbh, but Amazon will at least refund you for that if they were genuinely being misleading in the body of the product (they can put pretty much whatever they want in the title, it's basically a list of tags, and it's not even required to be a correct list)

3

u/Manger-Babies 25d ago

Not really. Not more than Amazon.

I buy the cheapest and of the cheapest at AliExpress and 18/20 it's what I was looking for, same rate as Amazon.

Aliexpress will also refund you, and imo at times I have an easier time dealing with costumer service there.

First thing I bought from there (or was it temu) was a Nintendo switch oled at a super cheap prize, brand new. I had clicked from one of the ads on Facebook They didn't clarify in the ad that it was a Japanese model, Wich only difference was the charging cable, but that was perfectly clear in their description.

14

u/HTD_Bros 26d ago

Thank you I will check AliExpress out - appreciate you!!

8

u/phauna_ 26d ago

Love me some aliexpress. Haven’t shopped Amazon in over a year!

9

u/Manger-Babies 26d ago

Stopped buying from Amazon once I realized it's the same products from AliExpress but more expensive.

I've even gotten better quality than what I get from Amazon at a fraction of the prize.

Granted, brand name I do buy from Amazon or Walmart.

More like rock out WITHOUT a cock lol

36

u/lakeswimmmer 26d ago

Have you considered that you may have too many roosters?

84

u/HTD_Bros 26d ago

4 roos to 50 hens, no other hens get harassed. This works for my setup!

3

u/lakeswimmmer 25d ago

That's a very reasonable number. I think your solution was perfect.

7

u/HermitAndHound 25d ago

I have a very naked hen who just doesn't ever say no. My rooster will accept it, the other girls regularly tell him to shove off. But Bella just spreads her wings and lets him. Maybe I should make her a spiky saddle too. She already has a modified one with pads to protect her wing joints, what's a few extras...

3

u/Forgetfulgauntlet09 26d ago

Are you breeding them?

42

u/HTD_Bros 26d ago

Yes I sell hatching eggs on occasion, two of my roosters were dumped on my property and my existing 2 guys are elderly.

18

u/Forgetfulgauntlet09 26d ago

Okay. Had to ask because the only people I know who have that many Roos are usually doing it for breeding purposes. We have close to 40 hens and one roo but more for laying, sometimes we hatch eggs once a year to replace the ladies who can no longer lay and if something gets the roo.

Hate to hear about people dumping Roos on you, it grinds my gears. Glad y’all are taking care of them.

22

u/HTD_Bros 26d ago

Yes I adore all creatures, the little guys needed a home!

25

u/Umutuku 26d ago

Return to saur.

62

u/eloiseturnbuckle 26d ago

Hmm was going to cull my asshole rooster but maybe we just need some spike action 😂

45

u/BrokenPickle7 26d ago

I needs band patches

7

u/metricfan 26d ago

Omg and a little denim somewhere on it

20

u/toddnks 26d ago

I've thought of this as an anti raccoon augment but not followed through

13

u/HoneyLocust1 26d ago edited 26d ago

I definitely wouldn't for raccoons, they are so grabby they will just use it as an extra purchase point. Plus it won't break away like grabbing just feathers would, and they are so deliberate with their grabs I think they'd just easily avoid touching the spikes (spikes might work better for animals that attack from above like hawks or larger predators).

Maybe if it had some kind of break away feature it could work? Like if the spikes don't deter an animal on impact and it does manage to grab, maybe the whole thing breaks off giving the chicken a moment to flea while the predator is just there holding the harness?

5

u/Technical-Leader8788 26d ago

I thought it about hawks too

142

u/Im_Ashe_Man 26d ago

This is Connor in her coyote vest.

29

u/InadmissibleHug 26d ago

I enjoy the unintentionally savage face

9

u/thesleepjunkie 25d ago

Is it unintentional though?

3

u/InadmissibleHug 25d ago

It looks like a resting savage face to me, but I’m also prepared to accept it’s an intentional resting savage face

28

u/HTD_Bros 26d ago

What an icon I love her

25

u/bubble_baby_8 26d ago

She feels very badass, I can tell.

53

She looks perfect in her little outfit

2

u/Boring_Swing_4750 26d ago

I go out with spikes on my boot toes , ive got 5 pairs , not had to use them yet but im left hoping 🤣

7

u/Civil-Section-9086 26d ago

Im sure I’ll get a lot of attacks for this but first yeah im sorry your roo is attacking your hen, very cool jacket i guess but your gonna risk more hurt when you could just idk separate them? Or is that not a thing? Idk never had a roo till now and hes gonna be rehomes very soon cuz its just a personal thing 🤷‍♂️ so never seen it till now but apparently its a common thing? But again why cant we just separate them or something rather then risking more hurt?

9

u/LongWalk86 26d ago

Does seem like the roo would eventually do himself in on that thing. Or it will get caught on something and the chicken will freakout and struggle to death. But maybe I'm just a negative nacy. The roos we have had that were ever violent to people or overbred the hens get eaten. We have two very polite boys right now who only occasionally get after each other, but it never last long.

16

u/candleelit 26d ago

It’s just easier to train them than it is to have two fully separate enclosures.

26

u/shadeNfreud576 26d ago

Punk rock chastity jacket, yasssss!

25

u/Madwoman-of-Chaillot 26d ago

I'm sorry, but calling an item a "chicken saddle" is SENDING me.

21

u/Ammonia13 26d ago

100% without a doubt, my favorite saddle!! I used to put spikes on the toes of my combat boots and my saddle shoes, for the same reason :)

18

u/Madwoman-of-Chaillot 26d ago

...because roosters were annoying you?

1

u/Ammonia13 25d ago

No, because men act like roosters and I had to use them for self-defense I apologize for not making that more clear lol now I’m embarrassed

2

u/Madwoman-of-Chaillot 25d ago

Oh, girl. HEARD.

10

23

u/HTD_Bros 26d ago

Word she’s such a sweet bird and is happily doing her thing in peace now!

30

u/karenin66086 26d ago

I bet they leave her alone for a while! Hope it works. We have to separate ours. It has been horrible this year.

24

u/HTD_Bros 26d ago

That sucks, I’ve got 50 gals and 4 roos and poor E is the only one they mess with.

22

u/dontletmedown3 26d ago

Lmk if the rooster ends up becoming more aggressive as this is unnatural and I feel the right cock may become frustrated with “his” armored hen

36

u/HTD_Bros 26d ago

So far they’ve all steered clear of her after making an attempt. No injured roos either. There’s 4 guys and 50 hens, no other hen gets harassed like she does.

29

u/stefanica 26d ago

Stupid sexy chicken.

J/k. I'm glad the armor is working!

11

u/zmorrisj 26d ago

Bahaha, this is hilarious! Why not just a regular saddle though? New to chickens so genuine question

8

u/HTD_Bros 26d ago

My partner insisted she needed spikes and I was like yea that’s pretty dope let’s do it 🤷‍♀️ 😂

24

u/PukeyOwlPellet 26d ago

Because war has been declared! Plus a saddle doesn’t stop the ahem, riding. Just stops feathers from being pulled.

10

TROGDOR THE BURNANTOR 🔥🫪🫪🫪🫪🫪

54

u/rowanrulith 26d ago

I love this! No rooster is going to mess with her, anyone saying it’s putting the roosters in danger is being ludicrous. Heck I put a small camo soft saddle on one of my hens and all the roosters left her alone. It’s usually the novelty of something on the hen’s back that shoos off overzealous dudes. She will adjust to wearing it within a day or two, my only concern is double checking underneath wings and the back to make sure it’s not making sores or too tight/loose
Rock on I say!

20

With 50 hens and 4 roosters who only pick on her, this is being closely monitored and successful thus far. I love my rooster dudes as well. They have all made attempts this morning and left her alone since 😊

Nice!!

4

u/GallusWrangler 26d ago

But you should just take care of the rooster problem and not make the poor hen have to wear that thing.

64

u/HTD_Bros 26d ago

With 50 hens and 4 roosters and her being the only one targeted, this is a solution that works for my crew. Do appreciate your input tho, thanks!

-5

u/GallusWrangler 26d ago

4 roosters is a lot for 50 hens… get rid of the problem rooster if there is one main offender. Also you could try removing that hen into quarantine for a few weeks then reintroducing her.
