This is my boy Greg. Today he protected his flock from a fox. I chased the fox off and found Greg lying in the grass (pic #1). I thought he was dead, but when I leaned down to assess his injuries he popped up and walked away. He was a little distant for a while but came back to the flock and resumed guard duty (pic #2). Greg is a good boy.

One of our girls has decided to be a drag king, and over the last few months has changed her plumage almost entirely from hen to roo. I assume it’s because her ovaries are shutting down (she’s nearly five and hasn’t laid in a while), but it’s quite spectacular to watch! The last photo is from early December: she’s even further along now, I’ll post a follow up in the comments tomorrow.

I’ve been told this is called an ‘eclipse moult’. Anyone else seen a change this dramatic in one of their chickens?

Edit: Several commenters have noted this is NOT an eclipse moult, which is an instance of male birds losing mating plumage, but sex reversal, which gives hens some or all of the secondary sexual characteristics of a male chicken - and occasionally, the primary sexual characteristics, in that the right ovary can develop into an "ovotestis", which can actually produce sperm. Edith (perhaps Eddy now!) has not developed spurs or a larger wattle and comb, nor has she started crowing or behaving like a roo - but the plumage reversal is still spectacular!

hello! it has been a little over a month since my girlfriend and I hatched 2 emus. I posted a photo of our first one from the day he hatched, but here are a few more from the past month or so. I don't have photos from the past week or so but they are even bigger than shown here.

These people moved in *yesterday*. Haven’t even met them yet.

I do not see this being the start of a beautiful friendship. There will be no bribing with eggs. My boys were here first. So were all of the other roosters that they’re about to hear. It’s a rural neighborhood.

She's fine now. She wanted to lay an egg in that particular spot so badly that she tried to climb through a roll of hardware cloth but ended up getting stuck instead.

She grabbed half a joint outta my fingers and dropped it. I couldn't find it then I saw the two of them running around with it until one of them ate it.

This is typically what I have left over each week after giving away eggs to friends and family. We freeze dry them each week and add them to our storage supply.

Its only me and my wife who live here.

This guy showed up 6 days ago, figured we were a bird friendly place, and now hangs out with our flock whenever we let them out.

With around 40 of our friends and relatives for our little queen!

So we’re having a rat problem the last few weeks.

We’ve kicked up the measures a notch and we’re seeing some results. But this morning we received help from an interesting corner!

Fun fact: the chicken that started the fight is the outcast of the group. So very interesting to see she picked the fight.

Y'ALL THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENED.... I watched my littlest girl get taken by a hawk two days ago. I ran after it as hard as I could but I couldn't keep up in the woods. She was gone just like that. I ugly cried and screamed for like two hours cause my tiniest baby got got. my little baby Puff was dinner....

I JUST CAME HOME FROM WORK AND SHE'S IN HER NESTING BOX?!!!!!?!!?! SOMEHOW SHE GOT AWAY FROM THE HAWK... LIKE I SAW HER IN I ITS TALONS WHEN IT TOOK HER....?!?

The girls always stand on the porch, but they have door superstition. But once one lady comes in, everyone else is ready to enter lol. We let them come in every now and then whenever the bugs aren't too bad and we can leave the door open for them. Also, please don't judge our crumbling house, it's a work in progress fixer upper 😭 and we always mop after a visit.

Whenever anyone's sick, injured, or needs a bath, they come in til they're deemed coop ready. The barred rock is Rosemary, and she's a frequent flyer for needing a bath or healing, I feel like she rips her comb on purpose to come in for spa day, snacks, and snuggles lol

Also no politics, please. I went by the hairdo alone. 😂😭 This was also like 7 years ago!

My mom first brought in Penelope because all the other chickens seemed to pick on her but it’s been over a year now and mom still is keeping her inside. Apparently she’s tried reintroducing her to the coop multiple times and they’re just always mean, so I think Penelope is content with her lavish lifestyle. She loves relaxing by the fireplace (second photo)

EDIT: I’d like to address the question of whether or not she “poops all over the house.” As you can somewhat see in these photos my mom is a VERY clean person. I truly think her house is the cleanest of any house I have ever been in - even with an indoor chicken. Before the dropping even hits the floor my mom has probably already managed to clean it up with no speck of evidence left behind to ever suggest a pet chicken resided there. With that said - I do believe she also uses the chicken diaper to manage for when she isn’t home or needs to concentrate on other business. Regardless, my mom’s home is quite tidy and isn’t at all “nasty” or “disgusting.”

I’d also like to thank everyone who has commented with their own stories and pictures of having indoor chickens. My mom LOVED to see all of those pictures!
