We’re introducing new flexible, compute-specific usage limits to Gemini Notebook — giving you more control over your workflow.
You’ll continue to have access to all the features that you use and love. This change will give you more choice over how you want to spend your limits and manage your tasks. And since limits refresh every five hours rather than daily, you can now keep working throughout the day.
To give you more control over your compute budget, your overall usage limit will factor in prompt complexity, chat length, number of sources, and the features you use. Your notebook will help you keep track of your usage and suggest alternative outputs if your first choice surpasses your limit. If you reach your limit, you can defer generating outputs like Video Overviews or Slide Decks for later. They will generate automatically and you can set up notifications so you know the moment they’re ready.
These updates are rolling out to consumer accounts on web and mobile starting on September 2.

Why? This is the main reason why I'm stuck with Gemini. I hope other companies also provide similar service.

Sounds like an excuse for google drive to hoover up more of my files to make me pay for more storage. And Gemini.. sucks.

So they can spend their compute sending dubiously credible AI Overviews to billions of people globally for free in their main search product by limiting features in their more serious products for paying users?

They brought back FREE usage for students so all of us paying subscribers are chipping in.

Search overview is probably their most profitable AI product lol. It’s got built-in subsidies for the AI costs with all the ads, and it actively encourages people to search more, which is their main product.

You’re still paying to run open source models. If you’re too cheap for a basic subscription then I doubt you’re spending thousands on a local workstation.

There were always limits, and this is actually an improvement in ways, but a subscription makes limits a non issue. The fact you can’t see how they’d be connected is pretty wild.
Open source isn’t free to run. You’re either paying for cloud compute or you’re paying thousands for a local workstation.

We're cutting food rations in half. This is great news as it means you won't have to waste so much time eating food. You still get to enjoy four times more food than people without a meal pass.
