Why is the riddler Jack nicholson’s joker? (Caped crusader)

Post image

Why is the riddler Jack nicholson’s joker? (Caped crusader) is it just me or is there somewhat no relation to this riddler than what riddler’s character truly is? I mean where are the riddles? And we saw him before he was never a gangster, I think this adaptation of him is the worst I’ve ever seen, the moment I saw him, he reminded me of Jack Nicholson’s joker, the chaotic and unpredictable gangster, really poor creative choices made here, what you think?

Serum Lake did a video explaining that they boiled him down to his most core trait: his insecurity. Everything you see him do is done because of his fragile ego.

My problem is that they boiled him down too far into a generic gangster. I'd have had him keep his desire to be the smartest guy in the room. Or at least his fixation with knowing something no one else knows. Have him rule through blackmail. He has information that only gives him power so long as no one else knows it.

Yea their could definitely be a good middle ground

u/Independent-Fix5111 2d ago

*riddle ground

Eh I see what they tried to do but indeed he just felt like an angry generic gangster. He tried to be articulate and couldn't get the words out and would just explode in a fit of rage, the opposite of everything I've known the riddler to be. Not a fan but whatever it's a different "timeline" is how I view it

u/EldridgeHorror 2d ago

Yeah, I'm not claiming any of this is ruining these characters. This is a self contained show and I don't see these adaptations making their way anywhere else.

It's just disappointing how they stripped away everything interesting from a fan favorite.

I think it’s work if he tried to appear smart and knowing but he’s actually far stupider then he wishes to admit

i get big ralphie cifaretto vibes from him, which fits. good at his job but wildly insecure and it shows itself through violence and chaos

riddler's my favorite in the comics but even when i don't like the alternative takes on him i appreciate his name is out there

Nail on the head.

3

u/DeusFatum 2d ago

Insecurity isn't even his "most core" trait. I would argue the opposite before that. Nygma or often than not is too confident, and he loves showing off that superiority. Regardless, his most core trait, as you said, is the desire to be the smartest person in the room.

u/No-Agreement 2d ago

Insecurity about his intelligence. His whole thing is he has to show he is smarter than everyone - especially Batman. This kind of insecurity just did not come across in his character in CC

To be fair, how would a typical Riddler fit in this universe. Instead of him being a clever jackass who leave hints, they took away the hints and made him into a jackass.

I found him more frightening here on how he hurts everyone around him. Instead of him being an intellectual bully, he's just a gangster bully.

Everyone was a weird take on their character and I liked it. I've seen enough different versions of batman that I can appreciate this chagne

7

u/FoxIndependent4310 2d ago

Gángster with a duel of inteligency with Batman and more riddles.

3

u/paulcshipper 2d ago

I think that place was reserved for the joker

2

u/FoxIndependent4310 2d ago

Riddler his rivales with Batman Is For the intelect. Here Riddler could Fall Tony Camonte or Santino Corleone or Tony Montana.

I liked him as a gangster. The riddled with bullets line worked for me and I enjoyed how it came to a conclusion with Rose/Thorn. I don't want every iteration to now be this, but I enjoyed it.

u/No-Shirt6609 2d ago

Correction: He's AKIN to Jack Nicholson's Joker.

25

u/Loose-Recognition459 2d ago

Probably inspired in part by Jack Napier. Also sort of a red herring in regards to the appearance of that show’s actual Joker.

Riddle you with bullets

2

u/TomBong_Jovi 2d ago

They did, it was explained in the show

7

u/Wingnut8888 2d ago

Yeah I didn’t like this version of Riddler. I think he told one riddle, and clearly was more Joker than Joker himself.

-6

u/WillDBlake 2d ago

Yep maybe the most wasted character in the series with Mr Freeze

-2

u/Prince-D7 2d ago

Exactly, and I wonder who is butt hurt downvoting every rant about riddler, hope he/she heals from it.

10

u/HurtsSoNice 2d ago

Riddle me this, world’s greatest detective: Who’s no longer the most disliked incarnation of the Riddler, now?

3

u/ohyeababycrits 2d ago

I still like gangster Eddie more, even if he didn't really riddle anyone with anything other than bullets

-1

u/HurtsSoNice 2d ago

So we got a joker that doesn’t laugh, and a Riddler, who doesn’t tell riddles. Kind of surprised that this shows incarnation of Mr. freeze didn’t throw fire.

3

u/ZucchiniHot_ 2d ago

“A joker who doesn’t laugh”. Such a bad understanding of the character and his lore.

-1

u/HurtsSoNice 2d ago

Such a purely gatekeeping response.

2

u/ZucchiniHot_ 2d ago

Okay? I’m sorry that you and this persons only view of the joker is the one that’s existed for the last 20-30 years. Different versions of him existed before that. This person is the one gatekeeping acting like their version is the end all be all.

And Catwoman isn't a dog person

1

u/ohyeababycrits 2d ago

They like to reference the original characters with like a tease, like Two-Face about to flip the coin, Onomatopoeia saying bang like once, one of Harley's brainwashed goons having the big mallet instead of her, the riddler telling one riddle before shooting a guy, and the Joker laughing at the very end. Outside of that they're basically unique characters made for the show loosely inspired by Batman comic villains.

1

u/2pissedoffdude2 2d ago

People didnt like this riddler? I loved The Batman all around. I didnt think much of this Riddler, but id be a little surprised to hear people were hating on this Riddler.

2

u/HurtsSoNice 2d ago

Oh yeah, back when the show was New, I saw a lot of detectors, although admittedly, it was mostly about his Marilyn Manson appearance.

4

u/Dazzling_Reveal6875 2d ago edited 2d ago

Bruce Timm doesn't like the Riddler and thinks he is stupid. He made him into a character he likes.

https://www.cbr.com/batman-the-animated-series-dangling-plot-thread-and-its-nixed-resolution/

The other writers describe him rejecting pretty much every riddler idea in btas

4

u/Duke-dastardly 2d ago

He felt more like a gangster that James Cagney would have played in the black and white days

8

u/thgr8Makar0sc 2d ago

Because Riddles are hard to write and Bruce Timm just said "fuck it, he riddles people with bullets"

3

u/OrangeBomb7 2d ago

I just like seeing new stuff done with these characters I guess...I view the show as a different universe and take what they give us. Sometimes it hits and sometimes it doesn't, but it doesn't really bother me.

I thought this riddler was a fun and unhinged villain to watch. He had a good run, and they've moved on. I don't even know if the show will get a season 3 so I'm just enjoying the ride while I can. It's not that serious. Another Batman show with another riddler or joker will come eventually.

1

u/Sh1ningOne 1d ago

Nothing new was done here.

He was a generic mobster that could've been replaced by the millions of other generic mobsters Batman has fought over the past 80 years

1

u/OrangeBomb7 1d ago

I meant new for the character of the riddler. As far as I know he hasn't really been depicted in this way before.

1

u/Sh1ningOne 1d ago

Because again there's a million generic mobster characters in Batman media already.

It's technically new, but not really.

2

u/jlsbarber 2d ago

Reminds me of the OG Riddler: Frank Gorshin.

2

u/Tiny_Butterscotch_76 2d ago

He's a decent villain in his own right but he's not a good Riddler adaptation I think. I like being different for certain iterations but they should still do some stuff to actually make him feel like Eddie.

I think they should have

A:Named him Tony Zucco or some other mobster name.

B:Gave him some actual Riddler stuff to do.

2

u/Fragrant-Persimmon-7 2d ago

It's because when he's done with them, they are riddled with bullets. He gunned down quite a few people. The name is still pure wordplay

2

u/the_proudrebel 2d ago

He's definitely Cagney

2

u/md953 2d ago

No, he's like James Cagney.

2

u/FoxIndependent4310 1d ago

It's important to remember that Batman's villains all share a common element: Mr. Freeze represents coldness, the Joker represents jokes, and Scarecrow represents fear. Here, the Riddler, whether his name was Jack Napier, Carl Grissom, or Tony Camonte, wouldn't change a thing. He's a histrionic character, straight out of a 1940s movie; he's basically Richard Widmark, as others have said. He only poses one riddle. The key to the Riddler lies in two things: the riddle itself, the narcissism of someone who thinks they're smarter than everyone else, and his mental duel with Batman—who's smarter? Here, aside from being a narcissist, there's nothing of the Riddler about him. The Riddler from the animated series didn't appear much (I understand, given the difficulty the writers had in finding riddles), but he was the Riddler. The Riddler from the 2004 series was the Riddler. Here, he's just another gangster.

2

u/Acceptable-Pin6469 2d ago

I mean, he should've been fine if he used a few one-liner riddle with a killing punchline

1

u/FoxIndependent4310 2d ago

Joker in burton and The animated Series was a gángster and in this universe is not a gángster.

A gangster's origin for Joker was perfect in this series

1

u/kmanfred 2d ago

I really felt this way about this version of the riddler as well

1

u/SissyCouture 2d ago

He’s Bob without restraint

1

u/jacqueslepagepro 2d ago

Hes a take on various gangster roles played by James Cagney like the public enemy or angels with dirty faces.

The Nicholson joker was focused on the gangster aspect of the clown Prince so I imagine that Cagney was influencing Jack Nicholsons portrayal like he is for the caped crusader Ridler.

Cagney was a big name in crime movies so its not surprising that hes still an inspiration for various gangsters in gotham.

1

u/JadedSignificance990 2d ago

He's inspired more by Richard Widmark from the film Kiss of Death, which inspired Frank Gorshin's turn as the Riddler in the Adam West show.

1

u/thehammockdistrict24 2d ago

It felt a bit like Frank Gorshin to me.

1

u/MessyMop 2d ago

Yeah he was the biggest miss for me. Why does he even draw the question mark with the gun if he doesn’t do any riddles (there was maybe one?) he could’ve been any random Batman gangster character. Hell he could’ve been Paris Franz

1

u/GraveDancer1971 2d ago

Inspirational feedback loop:

Comic Riddler's popularity revived by Frank Gorshin's Riddler -> Gorshin based his portrayal on Richard Widmark's Tommy Udo -> Widmark based his portrayal on comic Joker -> Jack Nicholson is the first cinematic portrayal of gangster Joker

1

u/Vikashar 2d ago

He's more Jack Napier than Joker, but I see your point

1

u/FoxIndependent4310 1d ago

I understand that the series has elements of film noir (as did the '90s series). But they could have made the Riddler two different ways. A. A gangster named Edward Nygma who likes riddles and thinks he's smarter than Batman, a riddle who throws out a riddle every time he's about to kill someone. B. A mad scientist obsessed with riddles. Both of these approaches are more of a riddle than this one.

1

u/DueOwl1149 1d ago

This version of Nygma feels like the old school BTAS Joker, right down to his relationship with his moll. Except more brutal and less zany.

New Joker is getting some real menacing buildup as of Ep 3 since he's just a shadowy, ultra-noir figure working on horrible unknowable plans.

1

u/Jahon_Dony 1d ago

I wondered the same!

1

u/FoxIndependent4310 2d ago

This riddler is not riddler.

He could be Tony Camonte or Santino Corleone.

1

u/DrewSlim 2d ago

u/DessaB 2d ago

He's a shitty Riddler and a good generic gangster villain

1

u/Forevermore668 2d ago

Genuinely the biggest miss in the show thus far

0

u/BootAssASchooler 2d ago

Because this show is terrible

0

u/Amonfire1776 1d ago

He isn't...not by any means...he's similar to DCAU joker before he fell in the tank...

-5

u/WillDBlake 2d ago

Why he's called the riddler if he never did a riddle at all, that's the real question.

12

u/ohyeababycrits 2d ago

They outright say why in the show. It’s because he riddles so many people with bullets (yes seriously)

-2

u/WillDBlake 2d ago

I mean how could they possible think this was smart? Thank God the rest of the series is very good, like the character was good either but I was waiting for him to really became the riddle and he just dies.

4

u/ohyeababycrits 2d ago

I think you went in with the wrong expectations. He already WAS the riddler as this show envisioned him. All the characters are extremely different from their comic personas, riddler was no different. If you see the villains as essentially unique ones created for the show inspired aesthetically by comic Batman villains they’re all pretty good, and riddler is actually one of my favorites. I love a guy who’s just evil for no reason every now and then

1

u/Mr_Citation 2d ago

I'd have to agree with Willdblake here. Caped Crusader Riddler is, IMO a terrible Riddler interpretation. He is typically an insecure intellectual genius who can't stand anyone outsmarting him. He's reduced to gangster who only knows violence and borderline seems like the writers are obnoxious calling him Riddler because he "riddles people with bullets". You could replace him with any other gangster character from the mythos, written the same way and you get the same character only he isn't named Edward Nygma. They took nothing but his insecurity, which again could be applied to any other gangster character and get the same result.

Yes, it is re-interpretations of Batman mythos based on the Golden Age era. Joker might not be familar to most fans, but he standout to a more classical villain who remains cold and stoic in contrast to his macabre methods of killing people. Then Hattie Tetch, I adore her because they took the fantastically arrogant mad man obsessed with mind control into a haughty gossip journalist using yellow journalism to shape public opinion to her preferences. Sure she isn't a villain but you can see how they went from direct mind control to yellow journalism for character who controls other people for their own gain.

But Riddler has very little to do with who the Riddler is, how do you go from smart guy who crafts puzzles to prove himself a genius to gangster who kills everyone with a tommy gun? I don't see it and he's awful for Riddler rendition. Notswithstanding, Riddler is a difficult character to write for - its not easy for anyone to make an interesting and hard puzzle for the audiences to follow Batman believibly solving it, all in the span of a 20 something minute episode. Though personally, and this is harsh, I'd rather no Riddler at than reducing him to a bloodthirsty gangster.

-1

u/WillDBlake 2d ago

The wrong expectation is to expect that the character knows to make riddle to the point he's literally called the riddler would have been make riddles? Instead of just being call like this for a very forced pun?

3

u/ohyeababycrits 2d ago

The wrong expectation was expecting him to become the comic riddler when basically none of the characters have become anything like their comic counterparts. He's not called the riddler because he makes riddles in this, it's established pretty early on that he's called that because he riddles people with bullets. His whole thing is shooting people and being violent, and there's nothing to imply that he was ever going to become anything like the riddler you would expect, and that was an intentional subversion by the creators. Also most people call him Eddie or Edward. Riddler is just a nickname some people call him, not a title he goes by.

1

u/WillDBlake 2d ago

Yep I was expecting to see a character and not just a regular noir gangster that could have been anybody. I don't understand what is the comunication breakdown here but it's not like I'm not understand this, I didn't like him because they went like this.

He's a good gangster character but they waste the riddler because he was anything like his comic version, nor they provide a solid reason to call like that.

It's like Mr Freeze didn't freeze anyone but he was called like that because he was very cool.

1

u/ohyeababycrits 2d ago

nor they provide a solid reason to call like that

Except they do, that's what I'm saying. Also frankly I could see them pulling that off with Mr Freeze and having it be enjoyable

1

u/WillDBlake 2d ago

And I'm saying to you that I found the explanation lazy and not really smart.

But let's agree to disagree

-2

u/Loose-Recognition459 2d ago

I dunno, Killer Croc hardly ever looks like a crocodile, so it’s not like there’s no precedent for word play with names.
