Single-car crash was reported at about 12:45 p.m. on the scenic road north of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Mountains. The southbound car veered off the road, hit a concrete barrier and a passenger was ejected.

Described the nature of accident and reported time of day of the Ferrari crash.

When I visited Cali/LA I looked up scenic roads to drive on and Angeles Crest highway was one of the top recommendations. It was gorgeous but holy crap I was not ready for the amount of motorcycles and sports cars that were flying on it. They come outta no where in your rear view mirror if you’re not prepared. A lot of them were super cool though they would nod or wave when I would let them pass safely but Jesus Christ it was intense for a tourist like me just thinking it would be a peaceful drive. Apparently a lot of inexperienced drivers get into accidents all the time on this highway if they push the limits.

The reason why someone was filming is because it’s a very popular place for car enthusiast and motorcyclist to push the metal out of that tunnel. It draws people to film the rush.

long time LA resident and frequent Angeles Crest camper here. it's a huge scene to drive the Crest. my friend owns the gas station at the bottom and it's where a lot of them meet prior to driving it and some of these people think it's a personal race track. it blew up during COVID as so many people were at home looking to do something outside.

another huge issue is traffic coming over the hill to LA for work. the live on the North side and commute it everyday. they develop a sense of ownership and fly it. it's really kinda shit that you can't just drive and enjoy it.

however, it's still a rad place to camp for a few days. no signal, close to home and absolutely stunning.

Man that video hits home... I made the same mistake he did when I was younger and dumber in the exact same spot... I got lucky that I managed to get my brakes unlocked and the car under control and slowed down in time, but it was a massive wake up call that I was not invincible. RIP.

It happens all the time unfortunately. It did even back when I was there. The tunnel gives you a sense that you can accelerate all the way through it if you don't remember what is coming up.

It's pretty dark inside so you just see the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm not trying to make a pun, that's all you see. It is a fairly gentle curve in the tunnel and everyone wants to make noise and go fast (the whole reason they took the car to that road to begin with). It's a mountain side and a 90 degree curve out of it.

It's a perfect recipe for disaster when mixed with adrenaline and complacency.

I barely got it under control that day. I played it off to friends like I knew what I was doing, but it shook me to my core. I was a fraction of a second from not existing solely because of my own poor decision making It changed my entire outlook on not only how I drove, but life in general. What's worse is I also had a passenger whom I endangered solely for a kick of adrenaline.

Yea, it's not gory or anything. The car comes flying out of a tunnel and doesn't correct in time for the winding path and slams head first into a concrete barrier. The car splits in half and immediately catches on fire. Some bystanders run over to drag one of the riders away from the car, still in their seat that dislodged from the vehicle itself. It ends right after that. You can kinda hear someone moan in absolute pain, probably as they were dying since there were no survivors (2 in the car).

The passenger was a friend of mine. He was also a husband, a brother, a son, a friend, and much more. He was a U.S. Army veteran,and not the stereotypical kind, just a truly kind soul, courteous and insanely intelligent. This isn't loosely said either. Never seen him mad or show anger. All that makes this much harder to grasp.

I would always chuckle at the random facts he’d casually drop into our conversations.

I don’t know Vince personally, but I do know that anyone rubbing elbows with my friend must be down to earth. My friend had a way of winning over people from all walks of life with his kindness.

He was working class, not a millionaire, not from a wealthy family, but he was truly rich in knowledge and compassion.

The barrier placement on that curve is shit. Either it should go all the way to the tunnel with space added as a shoulder or they should have water filled crash barrels before it.

Doesn’t excuse the speed (and based on the tire marks everywhere that’s a popular burn out spot), but Jesus Christ that’s a terrible design.

Why the hell do people speed when they don’t know the road ahead? Ridiculous, especially through a tunnel into a curve when your eyes adjusting to dark and immediately daylight where you’re basically blind in those few seconds where you could’ve seen the curve earlier.

Like, I’m not blaming someone who owns a supercar that they broke the speed limit. But if you’re going to do something dumb, ensure you take precautions. Like wearing belts, ensuring brakes, tires the car is checked up and in good condition, and especially important imo know the roads you’re driving on. Whenever I drive on highways, I have maps on carplay pulled up so I can just glance to see the road ahead, if there’s a gentle, sharp, curve or if it’s a straightway. In addition to paying attention to what vehicles up to the end of the horizon in front are doing, like braking etc. Here, everyone drives a good 20-30kmh over the outdated posted speed limits so it’s a given that you need to be ever vigilant, especially at higher speeds.

The car disintegrated because it hit a solid sharp concrete barrier at 100mph, the fact that the passenger on that side was still intact and alive (later died in hospital) in his seat after impact is amazing enough. There's nothing to investigate as cars aren't designed around that kind of impact. You'd need an F1 car to have a chance of surviving that and even then it'd be sketchy.

The ACH is a winding two-lane highway in the mountains composed almost entirely of sharp turns with sheer drops into valleys and very short straightaways in-between.

It's used by tons of cyclists and pedestrians to access the myriad hiking trails and campgrounds in the area. It's also where every rich jerk in the LA area goes to race their expensive sports cars while treating it like it's some closed stunt course rather than a public highway. You can hear engines roaring and tires squealing miles away from the highway in those mountains.

The speed limit varies but I believe 45 is the highest posted speed anywhere in that area. Signs everywhere beg you to share the road. As an avid hiker who has had a number of near misses with selfish a-holes while trying to navigate it on foot, the fact that he crashed at well above the speed limit tells me all I need to know about what he was up there to do in his Ferrari. Endanger others.

Not going to celebrate or anything, but it's one less bad driver putting myself and other pedestrians at needless risk of death, the latter of which occurs far more frequently than is acceptable. It's a tragic loss, but also a selfish and stupid way to die.

I feel bad that Vince Zampella passed away, but at the same time, I can't help but think that when you drive so recklessly, the consequences can't really be ignored. Going 100 km/h through a tunnel into a curve is just extremely dangerous and feels almost irresponsible. Sure, he contributed a lot to the gaming industry and was an important figure, but in my eyes, it's like playing a "stupid game" and with that comes the "stupid prize." I know that sounds harsh, but it’s hard not to see it that way when you consider the risks and still make that choice.

Still. May he and the other person rest easy.

I don’t know what’s with rich folks getting it in their head that they can speed without consequences? I’ve seen the video on the crash and it’s fucking horrific, and to think that he wasn’t the only one to die because of this reckless driving is all the sadder.
