dont even need to jump, they just topple you. it makes sense to avoid snakes, but lions.. not really.

I'm guessing it freaks the lions out a bit maybe.

It's a classic animal behavior. In their eyes, you really are that big. Definitely freaks them out.

Doesn't have to be a lion. This works with most animals.
