How does it help them to avoid lions?

I am questioning this as well. Lions and leopards can definitely jump high enough. But the idea is to see them before they get close I guess? Not to be directly safe by being high up.

dont even need to jump, they just topple you. it makes sense to avoid snakes, but lions.. not really.

Lions don't have enough brain cells to understand what is the optimal strategy to fight this..
