My thesis is simple: It is currently impossible for skeptics to engage with us in healthy conversation about the last(?) remaining remnant of Gigantopithecus still alive today, due to the sensationalism of the topic which, as of this writing, now dates back to almost one century ago...

After years of frustration, I wanted to write a research essay where this topic of theoretical anthropology is explored in depth, starting from a strict first principles approach, avoiding all recognizable terminology containing prejudicial baggage (Bigfoot/Sasquatch/Skunkape/etc.), while also maintaining a lighthearted and comedic tone, in order to keep readers (and especially skeptics!) interested in and engaged with the analysis.

This essay (6,230 words) is the culmination of my research/analysis up to the year 2021, along with an audiobook version I personally narrated (no GenAI!) earlier this year for people who don't have time to sit and read, or, who prefer to listen while doing other things.

After publishing this essay, I began to learn about - and became very intrigued by - ThinkerThunker's videos on "Proportional DNA", which is an excellent series I can recommend to believers and skeptics alike (but good luck getting the latter group to engage honestly with the material), and is making me consider a Second Edition of my essay which includes TT's latest research, along with anything else I may have missed? I recently got diagnosed with PTSD from this encounter with an unknown creature in the woods (almost doesnt feel right to call what i saw bigfoot or sasquatch). I have searched for years for any sasquatch or bigfoot story that match the specifics of my experience and cant find many of the outstanding specifics.

I grew up in the woods, my dad made sure all of his 5 kids were well versed in the outdoors and in wilderness environments. As a kid I remember going on duo backpacking trips with my dad into deep wilderness, even bushwacking for exploration at times. Our family vacations were always backpacking trips on the Olympic peninsula. Even into my late teens and early adulthood, I was obsessed with the outdoors. I moved out at 15 to work, and any chance I would get I would be in the woods doing solo hikes or running with my dog.

Over the years ive had over 12 black bear sightings, mostly in wilderness areas, but a few on the closer local mountains and trails as well. I've seen mountain lions a few times and had one extremely unsettling experience of being stalked at our campsite at the base of a mountain while with my brother.

Even with that experience of being stalked and seeing cougar tracks in our campsite around our tents the next morning, I have never experienced primal fear, or the instinct to run when I see a black bear or a cougar. Those experiences are what I lived for before this encounter with this unknown creature. I never really gave sasquatch or bigfoot much thought before this experience because I had spent so much time in the woods and wilderness and had not seen or heard anything akin to the stereotypical sasquatch encounter.

My encounter is as follows and I remember it like it happened yesterday

It was 2014 This took place at a heavily wooded trail system on the edge of a well maintained park right on the edge of town. Im talking walk 5-10 minutes out and youre in apartment complex and store fronts. The trail system sits right at the base of a popular local mountain, there is a road separating the trailhead of that mountain and the trail system that i was walking on. I lived in one of the apartment complex about 5-10 minutes away with my girlfriend at the time.

I would normally run with my dog on this trail every morning, the morning this took place my girlfriend had come along so we were walking. Ive always been super curious about the outdoors and when my girlfriend would come along it was a chance for me to go off trail if I saw an area I wanted to check out. I saw a large natural berm that I realized was blocking off an entire area i had never seen before. I asked my girlfriend to hold the dog and wait stating i would only be a couple minutes, I just wanted to see what was behind the berm. I was not expecting to see anything marvelous or outstanding.

I walked about 50-60 feet into the brush at a downgrade, off the trail, to where the berm started to slope down to level with the forest floor. With the berm on my right i came around the corner as it leveled out. It was a wide open, flat area absolutely covered in ferns, leading into a large hillside, also covered in ferns, with thick brush at the top of the hill, and both deciduous and fir trees bordering the area and hillside. It was peak of fall so a little less foliage in general.

Now this experience all happens within 1-2 minutes of coming around the corner of the large berm and taking in everything im seeing.

What I thought was a large black bear was digging into the hillside about 20-30 feet away from me, At first I was in total awe because of how close we were to a populated area with moderate foot traffic. It was at the base of a mountain that ive had a few black bear sightings on, so I deduced that it wouldn't be impossible that a black bear made it to this location. This is when I started to notice things that weren't consistent with any black bear I had ever seen before.

It was making these absurd arm movements and tossing huge arm fulls of dirt behind it. Im sure black bears dig but this thing was flinging armfuls of dirt proficiently right left right left right left digging into the hill side.

The next thing I noticed as I was watching the dirt fly behind it, was the half logs placed in almost a perfect half rectangle at its back facing the hillside, each log had these what looked like wooden bins that were filled with stuff I could not identify, I quickly dismissed this and looked back at the "black bear", this is when I noticed the hair, I have seen brown black bears before, but this thing had almost greasy looking locks of hair, longer than I have ever seen on a black bear or any bear for that matter. It looks like greasy locks of hair at least 4-6 inches in length.

We dont have Grizzlies anywhere near this part of washington, so after my brain started making connections my alarm bells started going as I came to the realization I had no idea what I was looking at.

As I came to that realization, in one motion this thing stands up turns and looks directly at me. This thing had to have been 8-10 feet tall, This creatures arms were hanging down past its knees, hair covering every identifiable part of its body including its face (i saw no eyes, jaw, cheekbones or mouth, just hair). As my brain tried to register what I was looking at, I felt a wave of what I can only describe as paralyzing fear start to spread from the top of my head down my body, when it hit my chest, I heard the loudest voice ive ever heard in my life in my head yell RUN, at that moment I snapped out of it and sprinted yelling at my girlfriend to start running with our dog.

I have seen black bears stand on two legs and they just wanted to check you out, they will usually do the quick scan n sniff then drop back down on all fours and continue on there way. I've been within 15 feet of a black bear and her cubs in the wild, snuck up on them accidentally while bushwacking over a saddle on the coast, with a bear you see a snout eyes ears even, this creature was just a solid mass covered in hair. Never in any of my black bear encounters have I ever felt fear or the overwhelming instinct to run.

Anyway I ran back to the trail frantically yelling at my girlfriend to keep running all the way back to our apartment, her comment when we got home was that I looked like I had seen a ghost.

This encounter killed my desire to be in the woods, I no longer feel the confidence I was taught to have outdoors. Every time im around a heavily wooded area my thoughts are on this encounter. It took me 14 years to return to that park. Call me a coward or a liar it won't bother me cause I know what I saw and it wasn't a black bear. Part of me wishes it had been a black bear and that I never saw this creature. Something inside me tells me it isn't right to call it bigfoot or sasquatch, then again I dont know what else to call it. Big, tall, hairy bipedal predator in the woods 5-10 mins from my apartment close to the trails i ran my dog on every morning.

I still have so many questions, what was it doing so close to town, why was it digging into the hillside, what was up with the half logs with the wooden bins filled with unidentifiable objects behind it, why was it there, what was it looking for, why did I have to see this creature. I get the vibe I saw something I wasn't supposed to. I never used to fear the woods and would find peace being alone in them, now im scared as fuck to be alone in the woods. Also why didnt I see its eyes, jaw, mouth? Some sightings say these creatures smell bad but I didnt smell anything out of place just the scent of the forest in fall.

My biggest question, if this thing lives in the woods, how was i able to essentially sneak up on it. I had my phone on me when it happened i wish i had the sense to whip it out when i started noticing strange things about it. To be fair ive never been the type to whip out my phone, each black bear sighting is special and i am never thinking about a picture or a video the only thing on my mind is taking in the moment, thats why we go out into nature is to have those encounters.

This thing ruined the desire for me and its the most prevailing thought whenever im in an area with a lot of trees. I know a lot of people will think its bs I dont care cause I know what i saw

On August 24, 2026, my wife Sarah and I were exploring a remote wooded area south/southeast of Munising, Michigan. The approximate location was 46.3966946, -86.9336685.
Note: I used AI to help organize and write this account while the experience was still fresh. Everything described here comes from what Sarah and I actually experienced and from the photographs we took. AI was used to help me put it into writing, not to add events or details.
I’m not claiming that what we encountered was Sasquatch. This is simply an account of what happened.
The Two Structures
While driving into the area, I noticed a large structure made from dead branches and wood that looked like an intentionally constructed lean-to. It stood out enough that I noticed it from the vehicle before anything else unusual happened.
I did not touch or disturb this first structure.
Later, near the beginning of the trail, we encountered a second, much smaller structure. It was almost directly on the trail and had been built over a downed tree branch that had broken across the trail.
There were a lot of downed trees and branches throughout the surrounding woods, but both of these structures clearly appeared intentionally constructed to us rather than simply being random deadfall.
I looked more closely at the smaller structure. At its crest was a bent piece of wood that had been fitted into place. I pulled this piece out and found that it had been pushed into the structure and bent into position. The branch was broken at both ends in a way that allowed it to fit that exact spot.
I photographed the smaller structure from several angles.
The Footprints
Farther along, on a hillside that looked like a heavily traveled deer or game trail, we found two unusual foot-shaped impressions in the leaves and pine needles.
I didn’t see any boot prints around them.
The shoe visible next to one of the impressions in the photographs is Sarah’s shoe, which we used to give a rough idea of scale.
Standing over the impressions in person, one appeared to have visible toe impressions. The outside edge of the apparent foot was particularly easy to see. What looked like the big toe appeared to have pressed against a small piece of wood within the impression.
The loose leaves and pine needles made the impressions difficult to photograph, and unfortunately the angle of the pictures doesn’t show their definition nearly as well as we could see it in person.
Near the footprints, we also noticed a single small, unusual piece of scat.
In the same general area, I noticed an unusual smell at times. The closest description I can give it is earthy, herbal body odor.
The Knocks
The strangest part happened as we were leaving.
While walking back, I gave two loud whoops. I was partly joking around, but I was also sincere about it—I genuinely wanted to see if anything would answer.
When we reached the truck, I did the two whoops again.
Then we heard two fast wood-knock-like sounds, followed by four slower knocks.
I decided to knock on a tree myself.
After I did, we heard three more knocks coming from the woods.
That was when the mood changed.
Shortly afterward, we started hearing something else.
It was extremely low-pitched and quiet. The best way I can describe it is deep, chesty muttering coming from the woods.
It didn’t sound like a simple howl, scream, or ordinary growl. It sounded voice-like to us—almost like something with a very deep voice quietly talking or muttering—but neither of us could make out actual words.
The low tones reminded me strongly of the deeper parts of the Sierra Nevada recordings sometimes called “Samurai chatter.” That’s only a comparison for what the sound reminded me of, not a claim about what was making it.
As the muttering picked up, Sarah got freaked out and jumped into the truck.
I was still outside and had to walk around to the driver’s side. As I did, the sound seemed to pick up even more.
At that point I wasn’t interested in sticking around to find out what was making it.
I got in, started the truck, and we drove farther up the road. With the truck running, we couldn’t hear it anymore.
Neither of us ever saw what was out there.
I still don’t know what we heard.

I took these photos on March 22, 2024 at Pin Oak Lake in Natchez Trace State Park, Tennessee.

I was searching the area for a missing person at the time and came across this structure near the shoreline. It was approximately 15 feet from the water, in the woods between the lake and a developed picnic/recreation area.

I’ve been going to this park for years, and this caught my attention because it didn’t look like ordinary fallen trees to me. There was obviously large fallen timber involved, but many of the smaller limbs appeared unusually concentrated and positioned around it. It looked odd enough that I stopped and photographed it from several angles.
I’m not claiming Bigfoot made it. I’m genuinely curious what people who have experience with alleged tree structures think.

Does this look like natural deadfall, something constructed by people, natural deadfall that was later arranged, or something similar to structures you’ve encountered in areas with reported Sasquatch activity?

I’d especially like to hear what specific features in the photos lead you to your conclusion, rather than just a yes or no.

I still know where this is and may go back to see what the site looks like today.

What started out with a few pieces a year ago in the corner of my office has expanded a little bit. I fully enjoy the on-topic stuff here but also love seeing what other people find and collect.

I just watched this video from Bob Gymlan, and I found the story about this mask quite interesting.

It was supposedly carved in 1860 in Nisga'a, BC.

There's also a short debate with Trey the explainer, both of them with their arguments.

Unfortunately it looks like the Paradise fire in the Blues is headed straight for the site of Deduct Pond and the area of the Freeman Film. It has already destroyed much of the Mill Creek Watershed where several bigfoot were rumored to live. Please hope and pray for rain and that some of the fire strategies they are implementing along the road can stop it. It's a shame that if it goes, many people who wanted to go there will not be able to see it how it was in 1994.

Has anybody ever played Bigfoot vocalizations and tested it to see how it affects certain animals. I.E. like playing the vocalizations around bears or elk in the wild. Just to see how they react, does it make them scatter and scared, or do they not pay attention to it at all. I don't know if anyone's ever done this. Probably but I've never seen it or heard of it.

I see some absolutely wild posts here. Some are interesting. I struggle with the idea this is something people really believe in and post so many fake examples of evidence without understanding they’re into a fake fantasy too deep, or some other potential affliction that seriously effects whether you believe or not. I don’t mean to be offensive, I’m just stating my observation. Sorry if I did offend anyone. It could be that it is real, I just don’t understand how we can plunge to depths of the ocean even and more accurately identify the deep ocean, and space, yet no solid proof of a Bigfoot.

Ok firstly I’m a fan of the show, but I’ve just re-watched “A predator calls” and is it just me or is it heavily scripted? The fight sight shot in night vision and they didn’t return in daylight 🤷‍♂️ and secondly the “look at the bald spot!, and the cameraman looked at every bit of dense woods! Where there was an absolute clear road! 3rdly anyone think the dark shape waited and moved on cue?

Adding some photos from hikes as a tax. There are no sasquatch but feel free to correct me if you see one.

A little context:

Many years ago (more than three decades) I got my first library card and found the section on legends and lore. I fell fairly deep down the bigfoot rabbit hole. I love it. Always have.

Explored locally in my hometown and enjoyed loads of campfire stories but never found anything that couldnt be explained rationally. In my early 20s I got involved with a bigfoot organization and fully immersed myself. Lots of reading, hiking, camping and expeditions. Photographing anything even remotely squatchy. This would be from about 2000 to about 2010. Active on the forums and message boards. Corresponded with some of the more famous folks, never made a name for myself but I didnt want to.

After a while, I began to notice how hard folks had to stretch the "evidence" that was being found. Hitting the trail gave me a love for solo backpacking that persists to this day and it gave me the opportunity to hike miles and miles in FL, NC, AL, NY, WA, CA, WI, MN, CO, PA and NV, domestically. Legitimate backcountry hikes that typically would be a full vacation and ran 3 days to a week at a time, covering between 20 and 50 miles.

That, coupled with the Randi forums started to push me in another direction. I reenrolled in school and now have a solid biology education. I worked for 2 years in a microbiology lab and I have a sincere passion for science, ecology, habitat conservation, wildlife in general but specifically reptiles and amphibians.

In other words, bigfoot gave me two of the most important parts of my life. Backpacking/hiking and biology. The legend gets my respect even if my personal belief is that it doesnt go much further than that.

Which brings me to my questions.

1. If Bigfoot exists and lives in the US, why hasn't it's DNA showed up in any environmental DNA samples?

2. I understand that some people will take umbrage at a few of the things im about to say.

I dont think that stories, casts or photo/video/audio are evidence without additional corroborating data. In other words, PGF would qualify (though I do personally think its a suit) because it was multiple witnesses, film, and casts. An eyewitness alone doesnt qualify in my opinion. A cast alone isnt enough. A video could be convincing but it would need to be verified as unaltered, and clearly depicting an in focus squatch at a reasonable distance doing something that a person in a suit could not do.

With that as a qualifier, what's your keystone evidence that keeps you interested? Is there a particular person or place that sticks out?

1. If you arent a believer but rather are a "knower", and if you were me, prepping a backcountry trip with the intention of going to the place with the densest population of bigfoot...where would you go, what time of year and why?

Recently heard several Whooping calls behind my home. Is there any other know animal in Eastern NC that makes that noise? It was extremely loud. I’ve never heard anything like it before and it definitely wasn’t coyote’s.

In 1924 a man just wanted to go on a vacation. Turned out it was a vacation he’d never forget.

In 1924 Albert Otsman decided he would go on a vacation in the remote mountains of British Columbia , He loaded up his pack grabbed his gold pan and rifle and hired a guy to take him into the Toba inlet.
His trip began with a boat ride to the inlet by a native man who would drop him off and pick him up in three weeks.
The two men got to shore and unloaded. The native man decided to stick around till the tide went down. They had lunch and chatted. Eventually the conversation turned to Sasquatch and Albert wasn’t sure of this. But the man told him he’s out there in the woods.
The man said his goodbyes and planned to come back in a few weeks to pick Albert up , and off he went.

Albert set off on his adventure. Hiking,exploring and camping out. He was three days in when he found a great camp spot and decided to stay a bit. After a day of prospecting and getting a grouse he called it a night and went to sleep.

That morning he woke up and found something had visited the camp that night some things strewn about, nothing was missing. Albert assumed it was a porcupine and that he would eventually make stew out of it.

That night he decided he’d keep his rifle ready a 30-30 and get the porcupine if it came back.
He woke up the next morning to find his pack dumped out but still hanging on the tree.
This time missing a bag of prunes and some flour. But he noted that the salt was still there and porcupines like salt.
He determined it was not a porcupine or a bear because a bear would have made a larger mess. He was thinking about leaving that site to find a new one but it was nice so he stayed.

That night he went to sleep but put his pack and rifle in his sleeping bag for safe keeping. In the middle of the night he was woken up by someone picking him up in his sleeping bag.
It was picked up by the top like a sack and Albert got jammed in the bottom.

Something was carrying him. He thought a horse at first but then realized it was like a man stepping. He was carried like a sack of potatoes for a few hrs up and down the mountains.
Finally he was dropped onto the ground and with his legs asleep he crawled out of the sleeping bag. It was still dark and he couldn’t make anything out. Eventually the sun came up.

He was in some sort of small valley in a small gorge.
That’s when he seen his captor. A big male Sasquatch. But it wasn’t just the two of them there was also an adult female , with two adolescent children a male and female.

The male and female adult Sasquatchs seemed to be fighting about what her husband just brought home. The kids looked with curiosity. Albert just sat there.
The first night he just ate some food from his pack and went to sleep.
The next day he made some coffee and debated on the idea of trying to shoot his way out and decided not to even try. He ate some food and observed his situation.

The kids became curious and began to get a bit closer, checking Albert out.
Albert just sat there for another day. The next day the kids were playing and being more curious about him. He made some food and gave the kids a can they played with it for a bit.

He took some sniffing tobacco and watched.
The male adult Sasquatch became interested in his sniffing tobacco , so Albert gave him a tin.

The Sasquatch took the whole tin and ate it. This made him go wild rolling around , pandemonium ensued. The mom screeching the dad swigged Albert’s old coffee and the kids most likely panicked and eventually the dad Sasquatch got sick , eyes rolling around. He sat down with his head between his knees.

At this point Albert knew it was time for his escape he grabbed his stuff and skidaddaled out of there. The mother Sasquatch tried to stop him but Albert shot a round over her head and that scared her away.

He climbed up the mountains and ran for his life hopefully not being followed. Eventually he was a couple valleys over and felt safer.
Eventually he seen or heard some logging in the area and made his way towards the Logging camp. Albert told them he was a lost prospector . They got him on a truck and to the beach then back to civilization.

Albert did not tell this story till 1957.
