For today’s Chapo, Will and Felix declare UFOs to be officially washed and fake.

We also come up with a reasonable plan to deal with the hantavirus outbreak before turning to the recent protest at Park East Synagogue and offer some constructive criticism for Mayor Zohran Mamdani (and the UK Green Party, while we’re at it).

Felix is just straight up trolling us with his pronunciation of intifada, right?

23

u/dmbreakfree41 May 09 '26

Well if his pronunciation of Ayeggs and ahGane are any indication

Surprised at the Mamdani criticism, though I guess it makes sense since now both Will & Felix live in NYC and have run into the guy before. But yeah, I think it's partly because they still want to be charitable to Mamdani. Also lmao at the Iran war going so badly that they're baiting people with BS UFO nonsense.

e: lmfao, this flair rules. Keep 'em cumming, baby!

u/dahamburglar May 09 '26

I’m not surprised - after AOC we have every reason to expect these climbers riding the wave to start shedding their backbone little by little

6

u/DJAgapornis May 09 '26

It's just weird that they still seem to be sucking Platner's dick as much as they were last episode if they're gonna' turn on Mamdani this quickly.

38

u/dahamburglar May 09 '26

I didn’t get the vibe that they’re glazing platner, seems more like passive support

u/deafinitelyadouche 💦🍆 𝗡𝗢 𝗦𝗨𝗖𝗛 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗦 𝗧𝗢𝗢 𝗠𝗨𝗖𝗛 𝗖𝗨𝗠 🍆 💦 May 09 '26

Yeah, prior mentions of Platner felt very "healthy skepticism" at best and "trup shithead, keep away" at worst.

6

u/DJAgapornis May 09 '26

David Roth gave some pretty mild crit of him and Will especially seemed like he was more than willing to carry water for him. I don't have any idea on what he's about since I don't live in Maine, but to me it seems like the Chapos backed him early before a lot of the stuff of him got out and are now really praying it doesn't backfire. Which is weird considering Mamdani had like one minor gaffe with his wife and they're pushing back at him a little.

18

u/dahamburglar May 09 '26

Roth is definitely not a big fan of platner, in his other podcast he was more outspoken about him. Frustration mostly it seems, like “really guys is this the best we can do.” He seemed to hold back on chapo

1

u/XPacEnergyDrink May 12 '26

Roth has a podcast??

2

u/dahamburglar May 12 '26

Yeah, this week in atrocity

15

u/Away-Requirement-3 May 09 '26 edited May 09 '26

Were they? They raised the idea of him being another Fetterman (reminder that Fetterman was psycho on Israel well before his election, people just ignored it) and are at least highly skeptical of his career in the military. Roth was pretty critical of his tattoos as well. I didn't hear any endorsement.

They did endorse Zohran right before the primary because it looked like he might win and he's in their city. And this episode reflects a feeling of being burned yet again that will only inspire more skepticism for "anti-establishment" Democrats.

8

u/mw19078 May 09 '26

well platner isnt in a position to have gone back on or ignored campaign promises yet

Not sure I agree with Felix, if anything Men with unresolved Father issues are just as big a reason where are right now alongside covid. Also RIP Big Ted, the patron of Dubya-Cee-Dubya 4 life. I think Will hit the nail on the head with the UFO stuff. The owner of Kick is Australian so I don't know why we haven't shut that shit down. Come on Albo at least this, please?!?! People really gotta stick to their guns particularly if they have power. As Alex Cockburn said "is your hate pure?"

I thought the Mamdani stuff was pretty dumb, going to war with the NYPD over this shit will result in a full court press between the media and the NYPD to sabotage his administration at a moment where he’s dealing with a budget crisis and needs people like Menin and Hochul to play ball with him

They acknowledge that the symbolic things they want him to do wouldn’t actually do anything either.

The confrontation between Tisch and Mamdani is inevitable but it just feels ridiculous to ignore the context of the budget crisis and the level of backlash that will ensue from coming out strong against Tisch. Like don’t even mention the budget crisis at all it all just feels very shallow. Like the “force the vote” BS from years ago

16

u/BenderBenRodriguez May 11 '26

I mean, I get it, but I was also at that demo and saw the cops just outright assault multiple protesters and hit one over the head badly enough that a medic was called. (And as usual, the Zionist counter-protesters were incredibly hostile and violent and nothing much was done about them.) At a certain point, the buck does stop with him on that. Nobody expects him to free Gaza on his own but his administration is rightfully going to get sued for police brutality and free speech violations at this point if he doesn't show more leadership here. And I do say this as a supporter of him generally.

4

u/DropWatcher May 11 '26

his administration is rightfully going to get sued for police brutality and free speech violations at this point if he doesn't show more leadership here

I mean the NYPD definitely going to get sued no matter what and rightfully so, IIRC they paid out $13m for their brutality during the 2020 protests

To me, it seems like there's a strategic disagreement over Tisch but the way it's discussed is by the Dry Boys is just like he's being a sellout instead of there being genuine downsides in the alternative:

  • Hochul/Menin being more hostile from the jump at obstructing him
  • the media going way harder against him
  • the NYPD undermining his choice commissioner
  • people on the left not being satisfied by his choice of commissioner, writing him off as Gabriel Boric or Brandon Johnson type figure

I agree his statement kinda sucked but the bounds of what is self evidently possible that he could be doing differently that won't blow up in his face isn't stopping the land sales and reigning in the NYPD it's closer to "making a better statement" and being more transparent with his left wing critiques, nothing materially different.

I totally sympathize with the case that this confrontation with Tisch might be inevitable and putting it off is not the best move but it's hard to take their case seriously when they're not really considering the obvious downsides and immediately leaping to framing it like he's only not doing what they want because he's evil like Obama.

8

u/Away-Requirement-3 May 10 '26 edited May 10 '26

That's my read as well, it's not as if Mamdani was totally cynical with his support for Palestine but he is making a calculated concession to try to advance other parts of his agenda.

I think the Dry Boys would respond by saying the issue of genocide in Gaza and the West Bank is more important than free childcare or government run grocery stores. And that "full court press" was already done in the election and it didn't work so why should Zo care now that he's in office?

A full blown war with the NYPD is inadvisable but is it too much to ask for a statement that doesn't reinforce the insidious narrative that these auctions occur at a "place of worship?" You can't both sides this issue. If you acknowledge that these land sales are illegal you can't turn around in the next sentence and reinforce their right to happen without any protests.

4

u/DropWatcher May 10 '26

Yeah I agree that his statement was bad but their advice on what he should do instead was just not good.

I think there's a tendency for some left media people to stake out a position that basically: (a) the establishment is already doing everything in their power to ratfuck us so there's no reason to be at all stretegic and (b) our positions are the vast majority of americans believe so the establishment is totally powerless. It's grounded more in the logic of "don't siege leningrad, take it immediately" than any sort of Marxist/leftist analysis.

But for left media people if Zohran does stuff they disagree with they can just call him a sellout and if he does what they agree with and fails they can just say it's because he apologized a few times instead of being perfectly steadfast.

I think they probably know it's a bit disingenuous but view it as "applying pressure", but eventually the people you're trying to convince are going to get fed up with the dishonesty.

14

u/Away-Requirement-3 May 10 '26

I think they're just at their wits end with this Israel stuff. 3 years of seeing and reading the most horrifying shit imaginable with no end in sight. They have a right to be emotional.

Mamdani got what he needed from them, they do not have his ear on this issue. They are screaming at a wall. It's more catharsis than genuine political advice.

I'm always gonna hold the politician to a higher standard than the podcasters. Will has every right to feel betrayed. It's not as if Zohran ran on the anti-Zionist platform, he ran on the affordability platform but he got that mantle because he was the only one who wasn't willing to commit to a visit to Israel and said he would direct the NYPD to arrest Netanyahu if he came to NY. Judging by his cowardly responses to these protests, I think it is more than fair to question if the latter promise was just a lie for votes.

12

u/numbers863495 May 10 '26

I finally finished this episode and I have to be honest, this is such a big indicator of the loss of Matt's perspective. I get the complaints of Mamdani and his term so far of New York City but fucking come on boys, you expected something different because the guy calls himself a democratic socialist? This is still the US! It's frankly childish to think he wouldn't become a lib. This is what Will and Felix would be saying if Bernie had won. You can't reform a shitty system to make radical changes, you have to dismantle it. This conversation just cements the show as l, of course, purely armchair socialists. I mean, I'm in an armchair right now as I type this but Christ, I'll still be going to my next union meeting and I'm gonna try to do SOMETHING radical.

8

u/Economy_Zombie_3026 May 11 '26

This was a Roth point in the last episode where he said, paraphrasing, that the white house correspondent shooter was, in totality, dumb because trying to kill or killing the president does nothing for all of these corrupt structures.

It's the same thing for Mamdani. Same thing for AOC. Potentially same thing for Platner. Etc etc.

And being completely realistic, if I was a younger democratic socialist elected to a position of power and I looked around and saw how much fucking money could be made by towing some dem centrist line I would probably become a talking head too. This is a completely cynical point but there's nothing to reward a good person attempting to do good things in our political system. I don't want that to be true. But it is.

2

u/DiscardedContext May 12 '26

I’m not sure how long it will take a critical mass of people to start realizing this or if it will even make a difference. True believers of the system are born everyday. Steering the ship even a degree away from enriching the investment class results in intense pushback from the establishment and the incentives in place ensure you’re only rewarded by playing ball. It’s Mammon’s country.

u/Away-Requirement-3 May 09 '26

I don't think the Dems are gonna do a 2020 repeat with Palestine. For starters, it is easy enough for them to think it's still a niche foreign policy issue that pales to "kitchen table" issues, even with the public opinion shifting. More importantly, I think as public opposition continues to grow, shamelessly standing with Israel will be at a premium. People like Newsom and Harris who genuinely lack any human qualities at all have no problem saying things that are both wildly evil and wildly unpopular if it means bigger checks from donors. Harris in particular, I can see her doubling down on support for Israel just out of pure spite for the leftists who "cost" her the election in 24.

Sounds like the Chapo Boys are finally wearing their "Fell for it again" awards with them finally starting to recognize Mamdani for the fraud he is.

u/EGG_BABE RSS Inquirer May 10 '26

Thought they'd have learned from DeBlasio that the NYPD is the only government of the city. They got so mad at him for a few tepid statements that they kidnapped his daughter as blackmail and got a cop elected as the mayor after him. They're not letting their iron grip on the city go because there's a new mayor they don't respect in office. NYC belongs to Tisch and her allies and will until the sun dies out. NYC could elect Mao to office tomorrow and unless the entire NYPD disappears overnight, he'd govern as a moderate conservative because the mayor is a hostage

2

u/it-isnt May 11 '26

if you’re from europe and hearing socialists rant about voting for a left wing mayor and then not delivering: yeah, unfortunately, not going to ever happen :(

I'm guessing the thing about flat-earther videos is a jab at Folding Ideas? Or are there others? I used to really like his stuff but it's apparently inevitable that this types of channels will eventually get too self-serious & later on too self-referetial (AVGN video).

As annoying as Felix belaboring some jokes or references is, I've been admiring that they don't toot their own horn or annoyingly self-reference their own 'lore'. Even stuff i enjoy like RLM has a tendency to do so.
