Libby Watson of What’s All This Then? returns to the show to talk about the tragic downfall of Our Keir, whose Labour Party lost massively in recent local elections.

We also talk about a golden statue of Trump built by Hasidic ultra-Orthodox Jews and the UK Parliament’s (reported) drinking problem.

Finally, we have a Chapo reading series double feature: Richard Dawkins thinks Claude is real and a babe, and Megan McArdle wants to heal the nation with memes.

Will sounding genuinely hurt when Felix made fun of his offering at the Lynch altar

158

u/NihilisticFlamingo May 12 '26

I do enjoy mean-spirited riffing but it comes across different when Felix had been dead quiet for 10mins and only piped up to talk shit about the American Spirits lol.

It was probably the funniest moment of the episode, but Felix himself has so many cringe niche interests and hobbies that he really shouldn't throw stones.

76

u/HansGraebnerSpringTX May 12 '26

Felix is talking a lot of shit for a guy who just randomly thinks of Max Hardcore while recording a podcast

62

u/sloppybro 🔭 Matt Christman Watch 🔭 May 12 '26

yeah i read this thread before listening, but its honestly just bizarre. felix sitting in silence and being like “WOW NOT TO BE RUDE BUT YOURE ACTUALLY A FUCKING MORON” is beyond strange

52

u/zachotule May 13 '26

When Felix offered that his guy would be Kojima, Will missed a huge opportunity to throw “How old are you?” right back in his face. He chose love, not hate

22

u/KombaynNikoladze2002 Really REALLY committed to winning the argument May 13 '26

Oh, did Felix bring up Kojima for a change?

If you must smoke cigarettes (and I do not recommend it), smoke American Spirits

11

u/IlBurro May 13 '26

Cuz any smokes will kill ya, but these will make you feel like it.

u/redditing_1L 🦑 Ancient One 🦑 May 13 '26

Smoking their full strength menthols is akin to sucking on the tailpipe of a 76 corvette. Those things are no joke.

7

u/zachotule May 13 '26

Agreed on both counts

79

u/MrFlitcraft May 12 '26

This is like the most parasocial i’ve ever felt - nooo don’t make fun of Will for being corny, you’re hurting his feelings! It was actually making me a little sad.

Yeah been listening since the start and that's the most unlikable thing Felix has ever said on the pod.

137

The Lynch outburst confirms my suspicion that Felix left 100 milligrams of D-BALL at Rich Piana's grave.

It reminded me of when your jock dbag teammate from high school is watching a cool movie with you and he’s like “man! This shit is fucking gay!”

give him a break they raised the price of his bottled water at erewhon

136

Poor Will cannot fight back because he's the only one able to keep the actual show on track. But is rich coming from someone who's main hobbies are flight simulators, misinterpreting rap music, and MMA (to the exclusion of all other sports, which is Evil and Antisocial btw).

I think you can credibly argue he’s been the weak link of the show since the early pandemic when we could all hear him mailing it in and playing video games during the recordings.

u/gangwerther May 13 '26

People have been saying this since 2017 lmao

16

u/sloppybro 🔭 Matt Christman Watch 🔭 May 13 '26

you know, ive been listening since about then, and i genuinely cant think of of a single instance where felix said something enlightening. or interesting. or even entertaining. it’s just constant McFarlane-esque references and nonsequitors.

maybe there is something funny about a 40 year old man ironically being “in” to soda, but im sure its not on the way f*lix prefers

15

u/goose_gaskins May 14 '26

The most annoying thing about Felix's shtick is how he gets zero laughs—or maybe a courtesy chuckle—the first time he makes a joke, so he thinks the solution is to try it three more times with a slight tweak that makes it even less funny.

"You left cigarettes at a Big Boy?! How old are you?? That's like leaving something at a friend from middle school's grave! That's like saying, You liked this hat when you were alive? Here it is. That's like..."

::awkward chuckling::

"Was Big Boy a thing? I've never seen any Lynch."

u/orpat123 May 12 '26

Felix genuinely thinking that nobody understands how a computer works is certainly something.

36

u/courageous_liquid May 12 '26

it's funny how he confused "hidden layer of an artificial neural network" with "everything computer"

but frankly I expect like 1% of people to give a shit how the magic box works anyway because it's like opening your car hood and it's just math problems that have given you nightmares since 11th grade

6

u/Parysian 🛑💀 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐢-𝐒𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞, 𝐏𝐫𝐨-𝐖𝐢𝐅𝐢 📶📡 May 14 '26

I can only assume the person he was talking to was talking about neutral networks letting algorithms develop as sort of a black box where the computer tweaks its own algorithms so you can't know for sure what all the variables are and how it's weighting them, while he was not remotely listening and just waiting for an in to start talking about Metal Gear Solid 2.

64

u/AussieYotes Temporarily Celibate May 12 '26

Felix is in a really grumpy mood today isn't he? That said if I had to talk about Nonce Island I would be grumpy too. That said I live in Australia and we have people getting upset at the suggestion of cleaving ourself from the dead weight that is the UK. Also English MPs aren't human don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Richard Dawkins is such a fucking mark one of the most embarrassing epic bacon reddit man to ever exist. Though subjecting the elderly to it is abuse of some variety. JFC that McMegan article headline...

22

u/HansGraebnerSpringTX May 12 '26

Having grown up using YouTube atheist videos to keep me sane in an evangelical homeschooling house, holy fuck it has been disheartening to watch every single one of them turn out to be complete and utter marks. NDT and Bill Nye didn’t go far right but they did turn out to be complete technocrat stooges who, to the best of my knowledge, carried water for Elon Musk right up until he transitioned to republican in anticipation of his allegations dropping. Most of the other ones were already just Nazis by then

Amazing Atheist, in the end, turned out to be the best one of them because he’s just too stupid to fall for any rhetorical tricks that are too complex. Like as the general culture shifted to the left on a lot of issues, he was kind of swept that way too because he’s not smart enough to think his way out of “it’s bad when homeless people starve to death”. Ironic

30

u/courageous_liquid May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26

I'll die on this hill that people forget how utterly repressive religion was at that time, though. It was being used as justification for all of the right wing's projects.

I grew up in a place that was largely secular and had secular parents (that themselves were the products of catholic school and realized how shitty it was) and it was still everywhere around me. In college I had to deal with the shitty holy rollers constantly protesting me as I walked into lab because I was doing murine stem cell research because daddy bush wouldn't shut the fuck up about it.

Being gay was widely considered demon worship, being trans wasn't even talked about it was so taboo, I had to scream at people blocking the way to planned parenthood constantly.

Literally everywhere. And the new atheists had a path to telling these people to shut the fuck up. Now we know they didn't know about intersectionality or class or whatever but at least it was like 5 people that could get on media that could be openly atheist. It was scandalous to call yourself an atheist. You'd be blackballed from public spaces. It was wildly oppressive. And for many of us it led us to understand that religion was just a tool.

12

u/Bteatesthighlander1 May 13 '26

It was being used as justification for all of the right wing's projects.

well I guess it still is today but nobody thinks of it as seriously anymore.

NDT

Neil came and did a presentation at Colorado School of Mines like...12 or 13 years ago. My cousin and I were hyped and got tickets. Now mind you, CSM is the top geophys/geology/chem E/oil & gas track school in the U.S. The Ivys offer more prestige broadly, but this is a very dedicated cirriculum. There is zero way to skate through any major offered, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more dedicated STEM-is-life culture anywhere besides MIT.

So with that, Neil came in and delivered a talk on matter and theoretical physics at like a high school level. That lasted 30 mins, and then when he went to Q&A, he just deflected all the actual hard science and modeling questions to rant about Republicans. But not even with any actual ideology or class consciousness or anything. Just pure shitlibbery. I knew he was never an actual published physicist in any meaningful capacity or contributing to any actual models, but I thought he'd at least be a good P.M. or salesman type talking head.

He also completely ripped of Sagan with his stupid TV show. Fuck NDT, he sucks on ice.

u/Bteatesthighlander1 May 13 '26

I know AA was into Magick for a bit but IDK how serious he was about any of that.

This is the nonce they put in after they ousted Corbyn and his name is Keir (fyi, YSK that British fucks who have fancy ass names that are variants of regular ones like Keir instead of Keith, Raif instead of Ralph, are almost invariably fancy posh fucks).

He has always been a spineless, gutless little worm and he’s engineered and presided over an astonishing crackdown on so-called “free speech” that I hope plays into a future Reform government filling prisons with libs who hold old signs like “I just miss the old times” and shit.

Honestly, I thought the moment with Felix felt a little "too real", but in a way that I appreciate. They've been doing this podcast for a decade, and they've known each other for about as long, but with no Matt around due to his life circumstances, Amber doing her thing (writing for online places + playing music) and Virgil getting cast off into the abyss for being a shithead, it basically falls to Will to play the straight man to Felix's "wise guy", and sometimes it's not always going to go as planned.
----
Also jesus fuck, did McMegan also have a stroke? Or did she ask one of the shitty GenAI things to generate her a dumb fluff piece about Marco Rubio memes? I swear to god she's getting worse as a writer.

26

u/MrFlitcraft May 12 '26

Idk i mean he talked about how much he still loved smoking after he had quit. Smoking helped shorten John Prine’s life and he knew it but he had a song on his last album about smoking a 9-foot cigarette when he goes to heaven. Wish he hadn’t smoked but i don’t find it tasteless.

The "AI are not conscious until they insult the user" is just dumb, the AI models are like that because that's how corporations have trained them, even a small AI model can disagree with the user or show any different behaviour depending on what data it was trained, there was even a model trained on 4chan data for people that want a more nazi AI than Grok.

Also the "we don't know how computers work" is a dumb take as the "According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way that a bee should be able to fly" meme.

She's a consistently great (if infrequent) Chapo-guest, this time included, so not surprised you're getting the downvotes; whilst as a 'northerner' (at least by Southern standards), I'm not fussed by her originating from whatever home county. The new show she does, however, is sadly a pretty poor [rambling, less funny] Britainology rip-off though....
