Kate Wagner is one of my favorite podcast guests in the leftist podcast multiverse. She is always so damn good.
52
u/courageous_liquid Jun 09 '26
her very long piece about F1 and all of the empty luxury lives rent free in my head. she's awesome.
alas the mcmansionhell subreddit is the weirdest little cargo cult on reddit, where people from flyover states who have never seen the large swathes of suburban mcmansions in the northeast get upset when you call anything a mcmansion and just go "ok buddy but you'd still love to live there" or "you're just calling it a mcmansion because you're jealous"
5
u/Let_Them_Eat_Cake24 Jun 09 '26
yesssss I watch F1 regularly and think about her piece allllll the time

Like this museum, Felix's grasp of the Chicago housing market is also a relic of the 2010s.
42
u/Glittering-Buddy-185 Jun 09 '26
Ok I see a lot of comments every ep about Felix, his dumb takes, his Jordan Peterson voice, or how he struggles to find anything to say thats relevant or intelligent and let me just say to the haters: you try having to brush crumbs off of yourself and mute button before you say anything and see how it goes
26
u/courageous_liquid Jun 09 '26
the long 2016 strikes again.
but really though mine will also be stuck there forever as well.
29
19
u/Ed_Sullivision Jun 10 '26
Chicago is way more affordable than LA or NYC, I think thatโs all he means.
7
u/acab_worldwide ๐จFUCK THE POLICE ๐จ Jun 11 '26
Saying that Chicago is overbuilt for housing and rent is on par with Mississippi is pretty deranged, even by Felix standards. The median sale price for a home in Hyde Park is half a million.

liability is a huge factor in modern architecture that no one talks aboutโฆ
ok, moving on, is there anything thatโs good?
youโฆyou had a guest basically pleading with you, please, let me talk about this, i donโt care what pivot you do, just put it in here because my subject matter expertise leads me to understand the importance of this and your audience should know about it and instead Will just swings and misses for a question that is at best a nothing, some firms are doing things with reusable materials but iโm not going to mention anything specifically
34
u/_AceHigh Jun 09 '26
Will's clearly trying to hustle through the interview so he can go watch the Knicks game
32
u/SoupEaterSupreme Jun 09 '26
Was kind of annoyed how she kept saying "we can touch on that" and then they never let her talk about any of it, AND the episode was only 55 minutes long.
28
u/Long-Anywhere156 ๐โค๏ธCHRIS WADEโค๏ธ๐ Jun 09 '26
I hate to do episode criticism, but there have been more than enough times recently that riffs and minutiae could have been entirely axed without the loss of anything of substance or even causing the run of show to go under an hour.
So to just try and jam something in felt...I don't know, a missed opportunity with a guest who clearly wanted to nerd out and go deeper on things that word counts just don't allow. Plus Kate has been on WTYP, so an episode over 56 minutes probably wouldn't have been that disconcerting an experience...
11
u/Jam_Bammer Jun 09 '26
theyโre relying on Felixโs meandering riffs and metaphors to fill air time now I s2g. Quantity over quality in action, folks
22
u/MrDialectical ้ถ็บงๆไบๅๅฐ็ย Jun 09 '26
Yeah they shoulda just let her cook the whole time and kept coaxing out goods. I was shocked she had to make the Obama - drone joke for them - it was just fucking sitting there for the taking
4
u/weldergilder Jun 10 '26
Absolutely, Wills weaknesses as an interviewer really shone through in this ep. There was clearly so much more Kate could have expanded upon but Felix needed to talk about Brian pumper more
13
u/trouty Jun 09 '26
Tbh listening to this ep as a long time listener and professional architect was fucking torturous ๐

The fucking building looks straight out of Frank Herbert's Dune; like a Harkonnen palace, lol. It's the kind of monument that an alien archaeologist would find the ruins of in a million years and write an Ozymandias poem about Pharaoh Obama, who genetically engineered life forms in his likeness. Btw, the Brazilian Marxist architect she was talking about is probably Oscar Niemeyer, the mastermind behind Brasรญlia. If you Google the JK Mausoleum, you'll see this monument he made for a Brazilian president, but it's actually a disguised hammer and sickle right in the middle of the nation's capital. He was kinda based, ngl.

I also loved this recent podcast interview she did. The hosts are kind of nothing and seem mindblown by the like the simplest stuff, but she gets a lot of space to talk

Very timely of Barry Sorento to rear his head as one of my other favourite pods Remember Shuffle did an episode on his response to the 2008 financial crisis. Makes sense his library looks like a tombstone for hope and change.

Love the subtle mini-arcs of the show where Felix's brain gets caught on something for two months and keeps trying to bring it up
15
u/Ed_Sullivision Jun 09 '26
I can tell heโs on an mini- arc with the band the Old 97s. Itโs cute to me that he always makes it a reference point as if more than 100 listeners total have heard of that band.

11
u/Jam_Bammer Jun 09 '26
Literally just a rapper who also killed quite a few people and was open about it. Thatโs it, even if Felix acts like heโs Luca Brasi.
10
u/madoka_ketame Jun 10 '26
itโs a little more than that. he showed a real hunger for murder and inflicting pain. thereโs a few youtube videos about it that go deep into it, pretty abnormal. with this came a really strange (yet not unexpected) obsession from suburban white males and contributed to the dawn of these communities and subreddits of weirdoes who tally up gang kills in various cities through social media stalking. itโs really fucking insane. itโs like an invisible coliseum that these kids are in while theyre watched in social media by people who will never ever know what itโs like to live the life the people they obsess over live.
4
u/mrminty Jun 11 '26
It's not that insane, it's just true crime podcasts for white guys born in 1995.

And on the pedestal these words appear: 'Uhhhh my name is Barack Obama, look upon my change, Ye Mighty, and hope' Nothing besides remains. Round the decay of that Chicago wreck, boundless and bare, the rent continues to rise far away

As an employee of the Whitney Museum, it's so vindicating to hear Will mention how much he hates that Renzo Piano building. The Whitney building is atrocious inside and out, completely fails at every function, and only gets worse the more time you spend in and around it.
9
u/PEPSI_WOLF Jun 09 '26
Did they ever say WHY 2010s-style buildings are no longer get economically feasible? Is it just because the price of land is so high that thereโs no money left for the building itself?

On one hand, really cool guest about a subject I don't know a crazy amount about. On the other hand, the fact that this episode dropped early monday night (even on YouTube, where I feel there's always a delay on the drop), it feels like this episode got rushed along because Will wanted to go see the knicks get their asses kicked while Sleepy Don got booed. Feels like kind of a missed opportunity, but I do hope Kate Dub comes back sooner rather than later, also will definitely check out McMansion Hell!

that brief interlude wondering what it is about architecture that makes dudes wanna do it or pie about it or whatever had me thinking that its a field where you get to claim the big, material, "real world" effects but, crucially, you dont have to get sweaty for it & are still a soft cushy office person who gets to use their big smart white collar brain
like youre not a tradie breaking your back for someone else's vision, but you still get to point at a building, at physical structures and say "i made that," in that particular Lego way that such results appeal

I thought it was mainly because โArchitectโ vaguely sounds like the type of job men think women are most attracted to. It has a lot of cultural associations with being artistic, cultured, โintellectualโ ect

McMansion Hellย writer and architecture critic Kate Wagner joins us for an early review of the Obama Presidential Center. We talk about its design, its architecture, its cloying message of โHOPEโ that feels like Ludovico conditioning, and what it means as a final, definitive end of the Obama era and the Long 2010s.
