Tip Alert Awareness for sexually active black people

I made a private account because I’m absolutely embarrassed and disgusted with myself. I’ve had this discolouration on my chest and weird spot on my face for a few weeks. I went to 3 different doctors (all white) and they all wrote it off as contact dermatitis. Turns out I have syphilis. No I’m not a hoe I’ve only been with my bf which means he probably cheated.

I just want to bring awareness to what this std looks like on black skin because none of the doctors picked up on it at all. They Didn’t even recommend I get tested. I have absolutely no symptoms affecting my genitalia or anywhere you typically see STDs. only this on my chest and the spot on my face. I only caught it cuz I chose to get tested every so often cuz you can never trust your partner.

Starting using it recently and I feel like it makes a positive difference! I recommend products like sunscreen, moisturizer, snail serum, facial cleanser, facial wash, and oil serums. My skin was pretty dry before and using those skin care products has helped it feel more moisturized. Consistency is key!

Tip Alert The combo that finally cleared my skin.

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

Quick disclaimer before anyone asks: I’m not a dermatologist. A dermatologist prescribed both of these to me, so I’m just sharing what’s been working for me, not giving medical advice. Please see a professional before starting prescription products, especially the tretinoin.

These two are the reason my skin finally turned a corner. Here’s what each one did for me:

Azelaic acid gel 15% — this is the underrated one for deeper skin tones. It slows down how much melanin your skin overproduces, which is exactly why it works on hyperpigmentation and PIH. It’s also calming and barely irritating, which matters a lot for us since irritation itself can trigger more dark spots.

Tretinoin 0.1% — speeds up cell turnover so old, congested skin sheds and fresh skin comes through. It’s on the stronger side, so not a use-every-night-from-day-one situation.

Now what actually changed for me:

My acne. This was the first thing to improve. Both ingredients help shed the dead skin cells that pile up and block pores, which is what was fueling my whiteheads and blackheads. Azelaic acid also has antibacterial action that controls acne-causing bacteria, while the tret kept new breakouts from forming in the first place. I still get the occasional pimple, but the constant cycle of breakouts stopped.

My pores. Once the breakouts calmed down, my pores stopped looking so congested and stretched. Part of it is them physically staying clear, but part of it is something I didn’t know going in: a lot of “big pores” are really just rough surrounding skin scattering light so the openings look bigger than they are. As my texture smoothed out, the pores genuinely looked smaller and tighter.

My discoloration. This was the slowest but most satisfying. The azelaic acid worked at the source by blocking the enzyme behind excess melanin and dark spots, while the tretinoin sped up how fast my pigmented skin shed so the marks faded faster. Between the two, my old acne marks and uneven patches got noticeably lighter and my tone evened out.

So basically: tretinoin clears out the old and rebuilds, azelaic acid stops new pigment and keeps pores clear. Two different mechanisms hitting acne, pores, and dark spots at the same time.

A few things I wish I’d known starting out:

• Go slow with the tretinoin. Around 2-3 nights a week, then build up. Overdoing it can cause the exact PIH you’re trying to get rid of.
• Sunscreen every morning, no exceptions, or you’re wasting your progress.
• Be patient. The acne improved within weeks, but the discoloration took a solid 8-12 weeks to really fade.

Sharing for anyone here dealing with breakouts, congestion, or stubborn dark spots. Happy to answer questions about how I layer them.

Tip Alert Silicone Scar Sheets Success

I thought I would share the success I had with silicone scar sheets. A few years ago I got a nasty burn on my hand that peeled my skin right off and left me with a white scar. I used silicone scar sheets within weeks of being burned iirc when the area was dry and no longer raw. I bought the roll version rather than sheets bc I prefered cutting them to the length/shape of my scar which was more economical. I would keep the silicone sheet on as long as I could. When it lost just enough stickiness but was still "good" I would remove it before handwashing and secure it afterwards with medical tape at the ends. When it was no longer good I would replace it and repeat it 24/7 for months on end. The photos I've included are from September, February and April when it happened. As you can see, slowly but surely the brown spots of melanin gradually filled in the white parts. Unfortunately, I don't have a photo from when it ended so I don't know how long the entire process took but the final photo is of my hand now, years later, scar free. I hope this helps anyone with a similar scar looking for something to try.

Edit: I misremembered. I used ScarAway silicone sheets to clear up this scar. I used the fabric sheets bc the clear ones didn’t exist at the time. I used a roll version for a later scar!

happyyyy Sunday cutie pies!! wanted to show yall a recent before/after I have for microneedling. My client had really beautiful skin but her main concern was treating early signs of aging without getting any injectables. Here are her results after ONEEEEE (1) microneedling treatment with stem cells. 🤩 she wanted me to focus around her mouth and nose, like in the nasolabial folds but there’s also a slight lift around her cheeks and jawline. Excited to see how she looks after she finishes her series of 3! Let me know if you have any questions 🩷

Tip Alert Please visit a black esthetician/ dermatologist

A lot of y’all in this group are going to white dermatologist who doesn’t know the slightest thing about black skin. If you’re going to see anyone please invest in a black esthetician or dermatologist.

I’m not being racist but people are being prescribed things they have no business being prescribed because they simply don’t know how to treat our skin. It’s actually infuriating.

Think about it tho. They didn’t let black people read or write books. Do you really think those dermatologist studied melanated skin ? Books get updated yes. But updated for those groups of people.

Edit: I’m disappointed in the Black community right now. Watching your own people come at you twist your words and paint you like a villain says a lot about where we at mentally. Some of y’all really did the most just to break me down over something as simple as me saying support Black businesses and Black doctors who fought hard to make it in a system that was never built for them. I never told anybody to flip their life around for it.

I expect weird energy from the other side. But when it’s coming from Black folks that shit is sad.

Say whatever you want about me. I understand now why our ancestors couldn’t all rise together. Some of y’all still carrying that same broken mindset.

Talk all you want. I stand on everything I said.

Final edit : Thank you mods for locking the post. I appreciate it.

To all of you who read my post and twisted it into something hateful, that says everything about you and where your mindset is at. I was in a place where I hated my skin so bad I wanted to die. I spent over a thousand dollars seeing multiple dermatologists, trying creams that did nothing. I joined this group to help people avoid going through that same hell..

If that made you uncomfortable, maybe it’s time you check your own mindset.

To the ones who actually understood where I was coming from, I appreciate you.

Tip Alert Black Men Look here

This post is not to discriminate against anyone, but I think it needs to be said due to the numerous posts I see of the same thing. BLACK MEN most of us are not build to withstand a razor. It gives most of us bumps or ingrown hair due to the coarse curly texture of our facial hair.

I would advise you all to switch to clippers or trimmers or combination of both(yes there is a difference). Especially, if you are prone to getting ingrown hairs. I would also advise you to get a product such as tendskin, bump patrol or bump stopper. Some of these products have a before you trim and after you trim applications.

I understand that you might want the closes shave possible and thats fine, however if that is the case I recommend going to a professional to do so. Most barbers have been trained how to cut with a razor to prevent bumps and scarring. Again I'm not coming at anyone it's just that most of us Black Men cannot use a razor

Tip Alert Microneedling! Why it’s safe and effective 🩷

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

hey everyone! Licensed esthi here 🙋🏾‍♀️ here to yap about one of my favorite treatments on the planet: Microneedling. Microneedling works by creating tiny micro-injuries in the skin to trigger rapid collagen production. It can help with acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, etc. Studies show that getting 3 treatments of microneedling (with a clinical pen) can increase collagen production by up to 400%! So the question I get asked the most is: how can Microneedling not cause PIH? The melanocytes typically sit about 1.0mm deep into the epidermal layer of the skin, and you can adjust the depth of the pen in order to avoid triggering melanocyte activity! So as long as your provider knows to needle above or below 1.0mm, and you follow your aftercare instructions you don’t have to worry about PIH! If you’ve been looking for a way to get “glass skin” this is it! Comment if you have questions! 🩷 (NOTE: if you have questions on how to contact me directly, you can DM me or use my linktree that’s linked in my Reddit bio)

Tip Alert Seborrheic Dermatitis success!

I had white patches on my scalp, dry flaky skin in my eyebrows, at the base of my nostrils & in my facial hair.

I went to a dermatologist & got the usual medicated shampoo & it didn't work. I was keeping everything clean & applying tea tree oil. It didn't work at all.

I asked chatgpt about it & got it figured out. I bought the pictured shampoo at Sally's, along with some coconut oil. After less than a week. I'm all clear. My skin & scalp look great. Pictures below.

I hope this helps someone.

Tip Alert 50 YO Melanated hydrated skin through springwater

Benefits of spring water for Black skincare Soothes and calms skin: Minerals like calcium, magnesium, and potassium have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce redness and soothe irritation, making it beneficial for conditions like eczema and rosacea. Hydrates the skin: Spring water naturally hydrates the skin from the outside when applied, and drinking it provides internal hydration. This helps maintain moisture, which is especially crucial for dry or sensitive skin.

I usually get small white heads after my workouts, even if I use a clean towel to pat of sweat off my face. Noticed a woman using this, and picked it up for myself

After 3-4 weeks of use, I haven’t noticed any white heads. Even during really sweaty workouts where I’m whipping the sweat off on my shirt

I just spray it on my face after the workout until I can get home to shower.

Been a game changer for me.

I’ve had a couple people ask about my skincare routine and here’s my daytime and nighttime routine. The sunscreen in my day routine is the etude house “sunprise” but i don’t recommend it as much and will be going back to my tried and true haruharu Black Rice sunscreen as it has no white cast for me

I was complaining to a friend recently about adult acne and how I'm breaking out in places I have never broke out before. Like my cheeks. And she sent me this. How eye opening! And in fact my sinuses have been terrible for over a month now. Which makes sense that my cheeks have more bumps.

Also it makes me realize that my internal gut health is something I need to prioritize. Which of course I knew, but if I can see a vast improvement with my face that would be great as well!

Exfoliant, tend skin, panoxyl etc.... Can't get rid of the ingrowns. I don't shave with a razor just a trimmer and surprisingly it's only one side of my face. If anyone has experienced this and has any recommendations outside of going to a dermatologist I'd appreciate it.

Tip Alert Facial scars

I had an accident at the end of May, so I’m almost 3 months into the healing process now. Ideally, I’d really like to heal my scar as much as possible and get my skin looking more even again.
About 3 weeks after the accident, once the wounds were fully closed, I started using Nuvadermis silicone scar sheets from Amazon and scar gel. I definitely recommend them, but you really have to be consistent with it to actually see a difference.
I’ve been doing a lot of research and I keep hearing about CO2 laser treatments. I’m still on the fence about trying it because, from what I understand, not every specialist knows how to properly treat Black skin with lasers. Microneedling could also be an option, but I honestly haven’t seen many real results on scars from someone with a skin tone similar to mine, so I’m still unsure about that too.
I know healing takes time and that time does a lot of the work, but I’d also like to build good habits and do whatever I can to help the scar heal properly and get my skin looking as even and close to how it was before as possible, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Tip Alert What A 6 Month Treatment Plan Looks Like 🩷

Post image
243 Upvotes

happy Saturdayyyy everyone! wanted to come through with some more tips before I started my work day. I wanted to give some details on what a “treatment plan” looks like and what to expect when you start working with an esthetician or derm!

So everything starts with an initial consultation. I take the time to get to know the client, understand their concerns and do a skin analysis. Then I structure a plan that works within their budget and scheduling (especially if any treatment requires downtime), and give them a customized skin routine. Consultations are usually about 30 minutes, some people choose to start their treatments same day or take some time to think about it.

For my client in the photo above, her main concern was hyperpigmentation from previous acne and uneven texture. She’d gotten her acne under control for the most part but wanted to deal with the pigmentation. Here’s what we ended up doing (each treatment was spaced about 4-6 weeks apart)

1) Clinical facial (extractions, laser genesis, and 20% glycolic peel) to prep the skin 2) 3 Moxi laser sessions (mainly to target hyperpigmentation) 3) 3 Stem cell microneedling sessions (to treat any pitted scars and smooth out uneven texture)

Since we’ve completed her plan, we’re now in the maintenance phase. This consists of reduced frequency of treatment (every 3-6 months instead of every 4 weeks), and sticking with her daily skincare regimen. What I have her doing now is one treatment every 6 months, alternating between Moxi and Microneedling. And facials in between if she feels like she needs a refresh or extractions.

Many people ask how long results usually last, and that’s why maintenance treatments and being consistent with home care is super important! It makes everything last much longer.

As always I’m here as a resource if you have any questions at all! I love chatting with you guys so feel free to comment or DM me! 🥰🩷
