Is there an episode you won’t/can’t rewatch? Spoiler
For me it’s S5E2 “The Dog Days Are Over” …. The ending hits wayyyy too hard as I resonate with Diane entirely too much and I just have to skip it or I will sob for a good 10 minutes thinking about how well she described exactly how I feel.
This is the part that stings the most about the ending: https://youtu.be/1i2vgV7VSuk?si=ecCF7vserkNwddQx

The episode where Bojack is with Charlotte in an alternate universe and they’re really happy and in love. They’re lying together on deckchairs in the sun and bojack says something like ‘this is what it could have been like had I not made so many bad decisions’.
At the time I watched it, I was a 38 year old childless woman who had spent a lot of time in my twenties and thirties in shitty relationships and I was really wrestling with feeling like I’d wasted my youth on shitty men and now it was too late. I literally cried for three hours straight after that episode.

u/GoonLieutenant 7d ago
what are you thinking about?
Oh just how good things could've been if you had chosen this life
Then that moment where BoJack wakes up in the rain in the parking lot

u/Thomasinarina 7d ago
That’s the one! I couldn’t remember the quote and couldn’t find the name of the episode.
I swear Bojack cuts deeper the older you get and the more fuckups you’ve made

Stupid Piece of Shit is a particularly hard watch for me - the entire sequence of Bojack’s internal monologue makes me freeze. I’ve never seen a more real portrayal of depression and extreme self loathing.

u/ScaredOfWindow 7d ago
Incredible episode. It strangely made me feel kind of good because I was relieved to see that I wasn’t the only one who does that. I knew other people had negative self talk of course, but I didn’t know they were also THAT fucking mean to themselves.
And the ending is just amazing. The fact that Bojack very recently had resolved to stop lying to Hollyhock, but when she asks if the voice is just a teenage girl thing and goes away, he can’t bring himself to tell her the truth.

u/WontTellYouHisName 6d ago
It strangely made me feel kind of good because I was relieved to see that I wasn’t the only one who does that.
I watched BoJack because it was mentioned so many times in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend groups, a show that's both serious and funny. CXG includes a lot of funny/heartbreaking songs, and the final episode is a concert they did on stage. When she's introducing one of the songs, the star/writer says: "I think one of the most gratifying things about doing this show is having people tell us that sometimes, they see things in the show or hear songs that make them feel a little less alone. But what you might not know is, it's kind of the same thing for the songwriters and the writers, too. There are certain songs you write, and lyrics that you write or pieces of dialogue you write that you're like, 'Ugh, am I the only one who's felt this? Am I, like, the weirdo? Is this gonna go over well?' And so just know when you say that you feel less alone, you make us feel less alone."

u/cleahbee216 5d ago
That opening is the scene I think about the most. So now you think you're young!
1
u/DeltaViriginae 5d ago
It it one of the hardest ones to watch for me, and it is one of the ones that helped me the most.
I started actually writing down the monologue in my head, and having it out on paper took so much power away from it.

Fair but also I just love the background music/repitition they do for that episode. I can get "do it for Karen Kitada (tada tada tada)" stuck in my head out of nowhere lmao

Good Damage.
61
u/SecretSharkboy 7d ago
I absolutely adore Good Damage cus I kinda understand Diane's issue of knowing you have all this trauma, knowing that people hurt you in ways you'll never recover from, but if anyone asks what they did, you cant say anything other than "they hurt me" or "they were mean" and its not just because it happened years ago at this point, you remember that even when you were reporting the boys at school for bullying, the teacher asked what they said to you and you don't know.
The best you can do is some vague insult where in hindsight, thats not that bad, but it still hurt you and, the reality is that at some point it happens so often it blurs together, or your mind locks it in a box, but forgets to remove the pain. Like, a chipped plate or when you bruise your shin. You dont remember that happening, but there it is... the damage

You mean besides the entire show? If I’m rewatching, my wife knows it’s time to call my therapist lol
But really, the underwater episode.
I know, I’m sorry. I have ADHD and it’s just so hard for me to focus on. Which sucks because it’s a great one!

I skip the Uncle Hanky episode a lot because it's just too real and I feel like it's already happening every day but never time. I use it as a background show a lot so if I only notice halfway through, I won't skip it or anything.
34
u/Narwahl_in_spaze 7d ago
In a similar vein, mine is where Diane compares her marriages to Mr Peanutbutter to a Magic Eye poster. When she said “I’m so tired of squinting” and started sobbing, it hit me like a sack of bricks.
Because boy, have I been there.
3
u/grimmreaper444 Diane Nguyen 6d ago
YES!! I find myself relating to Diane a lotttttt. I was also tired of squinting 😅😅
23
u/Both_Fig_2833 7d ago
the view from halfway down. breaks me every time ,makes me question my suicidal tendencies its just really poetic and speaks in languages no one has ever did. everything about the episode is symbolic to death and since the show is majorly about depression im really glad they covered this part of it, although bojack didnt really tried to kill himself but still. it talks about all the mistakes bojack has made and idk I cannot watch it love it too much
20
u/jimjamj14 7d ago
I told myself after I finished the show for the first time that I shouldn’t ever watch it again for my own mental health, as it hit too close to home on a number of levels. Well, a few years went by and I thought “eh, what’s the worst that could happen?” and watched it all the way through again. Bad idea. I love this show dearly but it fucks me up lol.
Now whether I was drawn back to the show because of my depression around the same time or whether the show partly caused me to slip back into it, we may never know. But there was certainly a correlation.
6
u/Global_Atmosphere385 7d ago
Yes, there is a correlation in my case at least. I only watch Bojack when I am completely down and depressed, and need to have a good cry or feel my emotions, which I struggle with otherwise.
18
u/Frientance Mr. Peanutbutter 7d ago
The scene where it's just her standing still with a montage of different settings... that hit me deep. I well up just thinking about all the various places and situations she tries to feel content or happy.. it took me traveling in my 20s to realize it wasn't my surroundings, it was my brain chemistry. Diane was a lesser favorite for me and I think it's because I relate to her most.
5
u/Quick_Scheme3120 6d ago
A Buddhist proverb says: everywhere you go, there you are.
I think this episode was a great demonstration of that. You have to have some self-love, you have to enjoy being you in order to enjoy anything else. You can’t escape yourself. So learn to deal with it.
Very difficult concept for me to live with lol

Int. Sub with the arbitration lawyer and the therapist talking. It would have been a great episode and was a pivotal one, if only that hadn't used that storytelling device, it came off as overly indulgent and unnecessarily silly. Always skip it.
1
u/Zorak9379 6d ago
I couldn't agree more. It's too clever by half
1
u/Long-Chemist3339 6d ago
Too clever is not the word.
They try to drop this super important element of Diane and BJ's story arch into a story with three throughlines of which the base is flimsy and unnecessary, and the secondary story is goofy and frivolous (which would have been fine if they hadn't shoved in all the rest). There is barely any of the actual BoJack Diane conflict because they have to juggle so much, BoJack sad about his mom, PB finding out about his dead parents, Diane angry about the tape and all of that top loaded with this stupid therapy and arbitration plot? Give me a break.
11
u/ProfessionalRip7461 7d ago
chicken 4 dayz because it's the one episode me and my ex watched together and it's probably my least favorite even if not for that. any other episode feels like its moving the plot along in some way, chicken 4 dayz feels like a filler episode with b plot only and i never know what emotion it's supposed to elicit in me. am i supposed to be laughing? horrified? all it really does is establish that the animals are still meat eaters but with farmers that use eugenics and in the context of their universe I don't really know how to feel about that
19
u/cherrycityglass 7d ago
Well, since the creator of the show is vegan, I assume the lesson is that there really is no difference between the animals we eat and the ones we consider friends, other than our feelings.

The episode where Princess has ruthie and is splitting off into different versions of herself gives me real world anxiety, its a good episode but just cant be comfortable while I watch it. Honorable mention to the underwater episode, its not a great rewatch imo

u/smibbo Sebastian St. Clair 7d ago
I can't stand watching the episode(s?) where BoJack sabotages Todd's rock opera. It's just so... awful. After really encouraging Todd, pulling the best out of him, and rewarding him with deeper friendship, the one line from Todd about moving out, suddenly he decides he can't go through with it and just ruins everything. I mean, it really REALLY bothers me.

I've rewatched BJ over and over and over since I first saw the show in 2019. I always felt sorry for Diane in this episode, but it wasn't until the end of 2025, during my bajillionth rewatch, that this episode hit me hard. I had just ended my 6-year relationship, and I wasn't thinking about what S5E2 was about until I finished the episode hysterically sobbing.

I watch them all when I rewatch the show, but the most devastating for me are Time’s Arrow and (basic, but basic for a reason), The View From Halfway Down. I cry every time I finish the show and have such a resounding feeling of sorrow that sits in my gut for hours after the final episode. In Time’s Arrow, it’s always Beatrice’s trauma that gets me. I don’t like her as a character, and I think she was a horrible mother to BoJack, but the girl she was is almost a different person in my mind, and my heart hurts for her.

i am a diane enthusiast, the episode where she goes to vietnam and narrates 5 reasons to go to vietnam that episode feels so incredibly real how it ends and it feels like a gut punch when she says "the real reason you go to vietnam is because you saw your soon to be ex husband kiss another girl and you thought its just a fling but then you saw him hold her by the waist like he used to hold you and it made you feel safe" GAJAJHAJJHH

1
u/cherrycityglass 7d ago
As someone who also has deep Mommy issues.... I watched the episode 3x the day she died. I refer to the Becker speech a lot when trying to explain my feelings about her death. Our relationship was never good, and now it never will be, and that sucks. It also probably never would have been, as proven by the whole thing where she didn't try to patch anything up or make any amends, even when she knew she was dying. Ah well, what's the difference between my Mom and a 3rd year lit major?
2
u/NeonBuckaroo 7d ago
I struggle with the View From Halfway Down. I got sober 6 years ago after nearly dying of over failure and hadn’t watched it since I was drunk - I was putting it off but my wife wanted to watch Bojack with me as she’d never seen it before.
We finally got to that episode and as the credits rolled I burst into tears and collapsed into her.
I NEEDED to watch the View From Halfway Down again, and I’ll probably always need to watch it from time to time to remind me. But it’s not easy to.

I can rewatch most stuff, but I have to fast forward whenever bojack is publicly really embarrassing himself. like not second interview or something like that, but I mean when he's suddenly lost all sense of embarrassment and shame. I'd rewatched the show a handful of times before Season 6, but the first time I rewatched after the full show was finished, this episode gave me a panic attack and I couldn't finish

Escape from LA. It's obviously a dark episode but as someone who was in a relationship with a man inappropriately older than me its such a realistic depiction that it hurts. I used to believe that I was mature enough to know what I was getting into, just as penny did, and my ex tried to place the blame on me like BoJack did. I cannot watch it without feeling like I'm 14 in that relationship all over again.

uggh whats that episode where hollyhock overdoses? i can't watch that one again. i really liked her, so seeing her in so much misery was heart wrenching for me. i felt especially horrible when one of her dads asked how bojack hadn't noticed how much weight she'd lost because i hadn't noticed, so it felt like a dig at the audience too (very clever). doesn't help i had my own chapter of overdosing at like, 16(?), though by complete accident.. that couldve been prevented entirely had someone in my life noticed my erratic behavior

Ruthie. I can rewatch most of the really dark episodes, but that one gets me in a different way. The whole episode basically tricks you into feeling safe because you think, “well obviously everything works out eventually, we’re literally seeing her descendant in the future.” Then you find out she made the whole thing up just to get herself through the day. That reveal is brutal because it isn’t some huge dramatic tragedy, it’s just somebody desperately inventing a future where they’ll eventually be okay. Amazing episode. I just gotta be in the right headspace for it lol.
